In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth written by William

Shakespeare, The continuous

theme of “fair is foul” is woven throughout the story, delivering the point that with everything good that comes,

something bad arrives as well.

Theme

Thou Shall Get Kings

•Macbeth and Banquo run into the 3 witches who

give the men prophecies. Macbeth was to be the

Thane of Cawdor as well as the King. Banquo will

not become a king like Macbeth will.

Page 4: Macbeth presentation

However, He is be blessed with

descendants who will be

Kings.

“Thou shalt get kings, though thou shall be none” (1-3-3-68)

Page 6: Macbeth presentation

So even though Banquo is not fortunate enough to be granted such a glorious future for himself as Macbeth is, his

endless line of descendants are destined for such.

Thane of

CAWDOR

•As war rages on, swords

clash and blood is shed. The blood of one particular man is shed.

That man was the Thane of Cawdor.

Page 8: Macbeth presentation

•The Thane is

killed by none other than Macbeth, thus Macbeth earns the honorable title as Thane of Cawdor,

Just as the 3 witches prophesized...

“No more that Thane of Cawdor shall deceive our bosom interest: Go pronounce his present death, and with his former title greet Macbeth” (1-2-3-63-65)

UNSEX ME HERE!

Lady Macbeth was

never the traditional female role. She is neither helpless nor weak.

Page 11: Macbeth presentation

In fact, She is more

dominant Than Macbeth.

Page 12: Macbeth presentation

She may “Look like th' innocent flower,But [She is]the serpent under ’t” (1-5-3-56-57)

Page 13: Macbeth presentation

So in reality, Lady Macbeth looks beautiful

on the outside, but is evil deep within.

“…I would while, [the baby] was smiling in

my face, have plucked the nipple

from his boneless gums and bashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this” 1-7-2-56-59

The three Characters mentioned all have done, or been blessed with, something

bad or

good.

Page 15: Macbeth presentation

In a bittersweet exchange to that something, they are

given its opposite. Be it direct or indirect, these exchanges cause the

characters’ downfall in the end.
