INSTALLATION GUIDE
lri?r Jo tltg. acluat insta aiion, there are a few guidetines
that should be followed:
.,1.-To reduqg possible RF interference it is recommended
mar you, maintain 8' _ 12. separation between any of theengrne eomponents and the receiver, seryos ind thereceiver battery pack.
-9.+ia-r5ene+-6+€el-b4f_si1u.rft f tgreejtoffi fr f he.enoine-to me tirewall. The bqfl should scre"w into a blind nut in thefirewall and thread locking compound should be used tJsecure the bolt. NEVER use wood screws to rnou"t-tf,"
3- Use a minimum 1/4" firewall for your engine inslallation.
.4. Check and re-tighten the engine mounting bolts everyfew llights.
MOUNTING THE ENGINE
1. The design ot this engine lends itsell to being mounted
with the carb,-uretor facing downward. We would recommend
that you do this. lt is much easier to avoid flooding the
engine when the carburetor is pointed down'
2.The ignition assembly is located in the rear of the engine'
As such,-it is recom(nended that you drill a 1/2" hole to allow
the ignition wires to'be routed to the control box'
3. Mount the engine to the firewall usin6 8-32 blind nuis and
high quality har,Jenecl steel 8-32 bolts. Use blue thread
locking compound to ensure the bolts are secure'
4. You will need to make spacers to mount the coil' Use
these to mount the coil in a convenient place on the firewall'
Mount the coil away lrom any ol the radio components
5. Crimp a solderless lug to each end of a 14-gauge wire'
cut to tength. Only crimp the lugs and wire- DO .NOT
SOLDER ihem together! The solder is brittle and will
eventually crack and cause the wire connection to break'
resulting in the engine slopping. This could be disastrous
in flight.
6. Using a wood screw, mount the control box to a location
on the firewall that is convenient lor the wiring connections'
7. We recommend thal you have two separate kill switches
- one mounted eldernally on the airplane and the other
internally mounted and activated by a servo' This will give
vou the ability to manually shut off the engine when i! is on
ihe ground or to kill the engine in llight should some
emergency condition require stopping the engine. See the
encloied wiring diagram lor exact installation instruction'
ADDITIONAL PARTS NEEDED FOR INSTALLATION(NOT INCLUDED):2-Spacers for mounting coil2-#6 x 1-1/2i sheet metal screws
2:Solderless lugs1-24' 14-gauge wire lor ground strap and kill switch

ourcKSTART
NOTE: For clarity, the engine is shown upside-down in
the diagram above.
QUICK START INSTALLAf,ION
The Quick Start is a unique device that enables the engine to
be hand started much easier. The unit requires 8 M batteries
(not included) for power. Ohe engine can be started without
in" Qrick St"rt using a high torque electric starter).
To ease the connection of the Quick Start, you may wish to
replace the existing Quick Start connector with a 4-pin
connector. Replace the large white connector on the Quick
Start Box with the male end ol the 4-pin plug' Replace the
while connector on the control box with the female plug' The
4-pin plug can be easily mounted to your airplane and will
prwide easy access lor the Quick Starter Box when you
start the engine.
FUEL
We recommend a high grade 2-cycle oil be mixed with fresh
gasoline tor engine fuel. Use a good 2-cycle oil and mix it at a
atio of 25:1 (5oz.of oilto 1 gallon ot gasoline). We recommend
Klof RC Model Lube (KSFPo310). Always use lresh luel. Do
not use luel that has been stored over the winter'
NEEDLE SETTINGS
1 . The carburetor consists ol two needle valves and an idle
adiusting screw. The low-speed needle valve is marked with
an"f.Tie high-speed needle valve is marked with an'H"'Turning thessneedle valves clockwise will lean the mixture'
Count6rclockwise will richen the mixture' lnitially the setting
should be 1 turn out on the high-speed needle valve and
1-112 turns out on the low-speed needle valve' Start with
these settings.
2. Never try to adtust the needle valves with the engine
running. Always turn the engine oft betore making
adiust-ments' Gasoline carburetors are much more precise
than glow engine5, therelore requiring smaller adjustments
lor proper performance. Avoid making more than a I/8th turn
adjustment to ihe needle valves at a time.
3.The third screw on the side of the carburetor is the idle
stop screw. Double check it to be sure that itis screwed out
far enough to allow you to shut the engine off when you pull
the throttle all the way back.
4.Your engine currently has a spring attached tolhe throttle
to allow it to always return to idle. Disconnect it so that it will
not put a constant load on the servo. However, if you are
bench running the engine, leave the spring connected to
avoid startingiat high throttle. Do not remove the springfrom the engine.
@
PRIMING
1. Betore starting the engine it is a good idea to prime the
enoine. Make srire vou turn off the coil by activating the
Ntt-switcn, or grounding the black and white wire'
2. With the ignition switch off, open the throttle all the way'
close the choke plate and rock the prop back and forth
against compression. This wilt draw fuel into the carbui'etor'
D; this until fuel begins to drip out of the carb'
HAND STARTING
1. Plug the Quick Start into the connector on the airplane'
Depresi the button once on the QuicK Start Box making
sure the red L.E.D. lights.
2. Open the choke plate. Then close the throttle to a setting
ol a last idle. Deactivate the kiil slvitch. Make sure you have
restrained the airplane or have someone hold it' Flip the
prop counterclockwise briskly until the engine starts' ll the
engine does not start after several tlips it is most likely not
priired enough. Repeat the priming procedure until the
engine starls.
ELECTRIC STARTER
ll vou choose to use an electric high torque starter, you do
n& need to use the Ouick Start. Make sure your kill switches
are in the run position (not grounded), set the throttle to a
high idle and spin the prop until it starts'
TUNING
Let the engine wanrFup for approximately 3o-secondsbefore making any adiustments or trying to increase thethrottle. When you do the initial engine tuning set the l6vt-speed be{ore the high-speed.
Low-speed needle adjustment lf the engine coughs orsputters the low-speed needle is loo rich. Lean the low-speed mbdure by turning it in a 1/16 turn at a time until lhesputteiing stops. lf the engine does not accelerate trom idle
. then the low-speed needle is probably lean. Richen the low-speed needle by turning it out a l/16 turn at a time.
Highspeed needle adjustment After you have the low-speed needle set you can tune the high-speed needle. Turnthe high-speed needle in until the engine rpm drops. Fromthat point turn the high-speed screw out until you achieve themaximum sustainable rpm. After reaching maximum rpm, turn lhe high-speed needle out until you see a reduction of50 - 100 rpm. This will ensure that you do not run the enginetoo lean.
After you have the high-speed needle adjusted double-checkthe low-speed needle setting. Note: The mildure screwsoverlap the rpm ranle of your engine. lt may be necessary togo back and forth several tin--es from the low-speed and high-speed mixure screws-
TROUBLE SHOOTING
IF THE ENGINE WILL NOT START
. Check the battery condition of the Quick Start unit (.tOvolts is the cutoff).
. Flip propeller more vigorously. Hint: ll you back the prop 45-degrees off of compression betore flipping, the euick Startwill make a hotter spark.
. The engine is probably not primed enough. Choke theengine until fuel is running out ol the carburetor.
. Check to see it you have a good ground slrap connectionbetween the engine and the coil.
. Check to see il you are getting a spark. procedure:Remove both spark plugs. Attach the spark plug wire to oneof the plugs, turn on the Quick Start unit. Hold the base ofthe plug to the engine casing to ground it. Flip the propellerby hand and see if the plug sparks. lf there is no spark, change spark plugs.
. The engine may be flooded. Remove the plugs and drylhem off before attempting to start once again. AIso, spin theprop vigorously to eject any excess fuel from the cylinders.Pdnted in USA
