Ayon kay Veneracion, every page of that magazine is riddledwith errors.

    * * * Ang suhestiyon ni Veneracion

Ngunit nanatiling tahimik siMendoza.

    * * *Habang pinag-uusapan ang

May

Mendoza at dating Gob.

sipi nito noong Disyembre 4, 1983. PATNUGOT)

Going, going gone?WE are losing biological diversityat an unprecedented rate, decriedthe Food and Agriculture Organi-zation (FAO) of the United Na-tions during the World Food Daycelebration more than two decadesago. Today, the predicament con-tinues.

Biological diversity (biodi-versity) is made up of all speciesof plants and animals, their ge-netic material and the ecosys-

tems of which they are a part.Species diversity refers to the va-riety of species within a givenarea.Genetic diversity, on theother hand, refers to the varia-tion of genes and genotypes be-tween and within species.

Plant and animal species pro-vide genetic materials for im-proved varieties or breeds. High-

yielding varieties rice developed atthe Laguna-based InternationalRice Research Institute, for in-stance, is a cross between a Chi-nese dwarf strain and a tall, tra-ditional plant from Indonesia.

Two of the most importantanti-cancer drugs in the worldcome from the rosy periwinkle, found in Asias tropical rain-forests. Taxol, the only drug that

shows promise against breast can-cer and ovarian cancer, was ini-tially found in the western yew.

Asian cattle have been crossedwith dairy breed of Europe toboost their milk and meat output.

Unfortunately, the worldsbiodiversity is collapsing at noth-ing less than mind-boggling rates.Difficult as it is to accept, massextinction has already begun, deplores Harvard biologist Ed-

ward O. Wilson. The Geneva-based WorldwideFund for Nature (WWF) estimatesthere are on earth at least 30 mil-lion species, of which all but a fewthousand are at risk. Less thantwo million species have beenstudied by man. Yet, over a thou-sand, maybe 10,000 more, are be-ing lost each year, mostly unseenand unrecorded.

Wilson estimates that, at a minimum, 50,000 invertebratesspecies per year - nearly 140 eachday - are condemned to extinction.

Of all the global problemsthat confront us, species extinc-tion is the one that is moving themost rapidly and the one that willhave the most serious conse-

The first gifts of ChristmasIM just curious, I asked themusical shop owner. Youre say-ing that what you have here is theoriginal drum that the legendaryDrummer Boy played?

Well, not exactly , hescratched his stubble-ridden chinas if trying to find the best wordsto explain things. Actually, theonly thing that remains of hisdrum is the skin. Leather hasquite an extraordinary way of lasting throughout years, evencenturies.

Okay, okay. I know that. Butwhat I mean is how did you endup with it?

Naturally sir, as with manythings in life it was inherited. That is, handed on

from one generation to an-other, I impatiently butted in.

Precisely, he said. Oh, sir,he obviously sounded that hewanted to change the topic. Per-haps I may have already told you

the stories about the different fig-ures around the manger. You maynow want to hear about the first

gifts of Christmas, he motionedto the crche.

First gifts of Christmas?Thats the first time Ive heardof them. What would they be andto whom were they given?

They were gifts that Maryand Joseph intended to give to

Jesus, his lips pursed as he be-gan to narrate the story.

Surely, these are not found inthe Gospels, I added.

Quite true, besides these arerather simple gifts and I dontthink the Gospels werent meantto go into every single detail.

But I thought you said theywere gifts to Jesus ?

Yes, but they ended up being gifts for someone or something else, he said as though histhoughts were wandering off intothe scenes of the crche.

Given to someone or some-thing else? I asked.

Yes, take for example Marysmotherly concern to wrap HerChild with something decent and

warm when He was born, hepointed to the figure of the Childin the manger wrapped withswaddling clothes.

You mean, She actually hadmade a sort of mantle for Jesus?

Of course, what motherslove will neglect such a basic needof any newborn child?

Three precious thingsIT is by the goodness of God that we have three unspeakablyprecious things, Mark Twainwrote. The first two were free-dom of speech and of conscienceor religion. And third was pru-dence to practice neither.

Constitutions of Asean coun-tries guarantee freedom of reli-gious belief, notes the U.S. StateDepartments International Re-ligious Freedom Report 2009that covers 198 countries. But thepractice is spotty.

Constitutions didnt didntshield Buddhist monks from be-ing killed by Burmese tatmadaw .Nor did they ensure rights of non-Muslims, in Brunei, to beeducated in faiths of their choos-ing.

Thailand, Indonesia and thePhilippines, allow generally freepractice of religion. There is nowmore elbow room in Vietnam.Institutionalized bias in Malay-sia shows little sign of erosion.

The right to believe or not tobelieve, without fear of govern-ment interference or restriction, provides an essential foundationfor human dignity, robust civilsociety, and sustainable democ-racy, it stresses.

The Philippine Constitutionprovides for freedom of religion, and other laws and policies con-tributed to the generally freepractice of religion, the reportsays. There were no forcedreligious conversion or religiousdetainees. Government fostersinterfaith dialogue. Publicschools give religious groupsopportunity to teach moral val-ues during school hours.

Some Christians discriminateagainst minorities. Combinedwith economic disparities, thesecontributed to persistent conflictin certain Mindanao provinces.

Indonesia demonstratedgrowing willingness to pursuecriminal actions in cases of vio-lence against religious minorities. Two leaders of hardline Muslimorganizations were convicted af-ter they broke up peaceful dem-onstration in support of religiousfreedom and pluralism.

Jakarta curbs unrecognizedreligions. Central governmentdidnt overturn local laws thatrestricted rights. Thus, religiousminorities experience discrimina-tion in civil registration of mar-riages and births or issuance of identity cards.

In Laos, officials generallyrespected constitutionally guar-anteed rights of members of mostreligious groups to worship, al-beit within strict constraints.

Government, however, pro-motes Buddhism. And this gavethe religion an elevated status. Some provinces report incidentsof intolerance for minority reli-gious practice, particularly Prot-estants. Local officials pressuredProtestants in some villages torenounce their faith on threat of arrest or forceful eviction.

Provisions in Malaysias con-stitution crimps its overarching declaration for religious freedom.Islam is designated as religionof the Federation. Like it or not,all ethnic Malays are defined asMuslim. Government regulatesIslamic religious affairs. It pro-hibits propagation of other faithsamong Muslims.

There were few reports of so-cietal abuses or discriminationbased on religious affiliation, be-lief, or practice. Minorities re-mained generally free to practicetheir beliefs.

But Sharia courts prohibitofficially registered Muslims from

WE seem to be swinging from oneoutrage to another these days. Inthe local scene, we just had thatshocking massacre inMaguindanao. Everything in itwas just unspeakable. Is it stillpossible to have such brutality atthis stage of our national life?

This looks like our version of Americas 9/11 carnage. The de-liberate malice put into it, theconscience-less killing of every-one in the group irrespective of whatever, in short, barbarianismin its distilled form, is simply toomuch for an average heart tobear.

I normally dont like to talkabout this kind of events. Silenceis a preferable option if only tolighten the ugly scenario. Talk-ing adds fuel rather than douseswater to the sickening situation. But this one grates at the gutsand one simply has to instinc-tively react.

Lets pray that this incidentwill yield us tremendous lessonswe need to learn quickly and per-

manently. Lets remain positiveand hopeful! Lets do everything to make this a thing of the past, never to happen again in the fu-ture.

But as if this black-eye to hu-manity is not yet enough, we alsoare now witnessing another formof barbarianism in the worldstage, perpetrated by highly edu-cated people, the elite of theworld of sciences and technology, the cutting-edge in humanknowledge, but, sadly, not muchmore.

Lately it has been discoveredby hacking the computer of theClimate Research Unit of Britains University of East

Anglia that many of the data made to support all this hyster-ics about global warming and cli-mate change are not all true.

Some important data, signifi-cant to the issue but contrary totheir position, have beendumped, and there appears a massive and systematic effort tomanipulate the public to believe

in their assertions. More andmore shenanigans are now ex-posed. What the hell is this!

Though there are many globalwarming skeptics who also arescientists, these have been effec-tively sidelined and projected asobstructionists to what they callas obvious pieces of evidence of global warming.

Al Gore, the self-appointedpatriarch of this group, managedto make the film, The Inconve-nient Truth, that mesmerized a lot of people and won him a NobelPrize. I heard that he is raking in a lot of moolah!

But the first time I heardabout global warming, I checkedthe relevant write-ups in theInternet, and while I followed thearguments of the supporters, Iwas also aware that there weredissenters who sounded to mealso serious.

I was amazed that the doubt-ers and deniers were not given a fair chance to present their ideas

A Challengeof ConscienceEDITORS NOTE: Following is the statement issued by national media

organizations six days after the November 23 Maguindanao massa-cre calling for swift justice, which can only be achieved through acredible and independent process, which in turn can only be achievedwithout the hand of this government.

THE brutal, indiscriminate mass murder on Monday inAmpatuan town, in Maguindanao province, raises theultimate challenge of conscience. It carries the cultureof impunity at work in this country to such levels of hor-ror that, if it remains unpunished for long, can send thenation into an inexorable descent into absolute dehu-manization.

The crime thus calls for swift justice, which can onlybe achieved through a credible and independent pro-cess, which in turn can only be achieved without thehand of this government a government justly mis-trusted generally and openly friendly precisely to the

very members of the clan accused in the massacre. We, ourselves, colleagues of the more than a scoreof journalists who were killed, demand the following:

    One, the creation of a commission outside the gov-ernment to investigate the crime;

    Two, the arrest and prosecution of all the people in-volved in it in any way, as murderers themselves or theirprotectors;

Three, the formation of a special court to try the case;Four, fully guaranteed protection for the witnesses;Five, the disarming and dismantling of all private

armies, such as those evidently employed in the mas-sacre.

    Six, the enlistment of persons of unquestioned pro-bity in the whole process;

And finally, the resignation of the government if it failsto deliver such basic satisfaction indeed, the very samegovernment that has encouraged, by partisanship andconspiracy, the culture of impunity of which the massa-cre has been the most abominable manifestation.

30 November, 2009HER EXCELLENCY GLORIA MACAPAGAL ARROYOPresident of the Republic of the PhilippinesMalacaang PalaceManila

Dear Madam President,On behalf of the Confederation of Asean Jour-

nalists (CAJ), the largest association of journal-ists and media practitioners in Southeast Asia, allow me to express our sincere sympathy overthe violence that erupted on November 23, inMaguindanao province, Mindanao which resultedin the death of at least 57 people.

As good neighbours in the Asean community, please do not misconstrue this letter as a form of interference with the judicial matters of yourcountry nor in the ongoing official investigationbeing undertaken by Philippine authorities inrelation to this tragic event.

As practicing journalists, however, we cannotstand aside and not express our indignation overthis episode where dozens of our fellow mediamen, totally defenseless at the time, were senselesslykilled while performing their duties.

From the reports we have received thus farfrom the National Press Club of the Philippines(NPC), whose president, Mr. Benny Antiporda, who was elected CAJ Vice President during theCAJ assembly in Kuala Lumpur last month, morethan 34 practicing Filipino journalists were among those massacred together with other innocent ci-vilians. Horrifically, some of the women victimswere reportedly violated before they were killed.

Like the rest of the international community,we condemn this appalling and truly shocking de-

velopment that has no parallel elsewhere. Wordsare not enough to describe the depth of anguishthat we at the CAJ, as well as journalists else-where, now feel over this mass killing, in a single

day, of our fellow media practitioners. It has not only blacken the reputation of an Asean neighbour that we hold in high regards butalso send a chilling reminder to the world thatpress freedom and the profession of journalismcontinues to be under threat even in a democraticcountry like yours.

Incidentally, the issue of media killings in thePhilippines, which was brought to our attentionby our colleagues at the NPC in our last assem-bly, is among the major concerns that the CAJhas adopted to be resolved during our term of of-fice that would end in 2011.

This despicable development gives us in theCAJ further resolve to assist our Philippine com-rades in their fight for a safer and humane envi-ronment to practice their profession and to at-tain justice to those in their ranks who have fallen

victims to violence. We therefore appeal to you, Madam President,to spare no effort in giving justice to the victimsand to use the full force of the Philippine judicialsystem and your national security forces in en-suring that the suspects are immediately appre-hended whoever they may be.

We shall be one with our Filipino colleagues, through the NPC, in monitoring the developmentin this case.

Thank you for your kind attention.Sincerely,

Cebu Calling from page 3to the public. Dialogue and discussion between the twocamps were discouraged. Thats when I started to lookdeeper into the issue and to probe into who the people, pro and con, involved are.

I just wanted to have glimpses of whether they arecompetent scientists who also are believers, or just scien-tists but not men of faith and vulnerable to play politicsor to ideological biases.

Sorry, I have to use these criteria in this increasinglymaddening world driven by all sorts of man-made inven-tions but putting God aside.Thats my basic guiding prin-ciple. Science has to go with faith. Any attempt to sepa-rate the two is immediately suspicious to me.

This issue cannot be resolved by science alone, espe-cially if its a science already prostituted by politics andideologies. Faith has to come in. Our human conditiondemands it.

And I found out that while all sorts of people can be

found in both camps, the supporters tend to be non-be-lievers and just contented with being pure scientists, while the doubters and deniers are at least open to thefaith.

Of course, there are many who are neither strong sup-porters nor strong deniers, but are just swept away bythe bandwagon effect of the controversy. They like mouth-ing hand-me-down clichs just to be with the flow.

Among these are clerics and other religious peoplewhose pronouncements peppered with global warming terms sound really funny and ridiculous. I just pray forthem and hope their embarrassment will not be too bit-ing.

Of course, many public officials like to play Pied Pipermostly for the fund of it. I often wonder whether theyreally know what they are talking about.

This is now the modern, very sophisticated barbari-anism that seems to be committed flagrantly and withimpunity against the whole of humanity, and not justMaguindanao.

Lets pray, learn our precious lessons and move on!

    7/8

    NOBYEMBRE 27 - DISYEMBRE 3, 2009 MabuhayLINGGUHANG PILIPINO MULA PA NOONG 1980 7

Sa totoo lang, we haveno right to declare themdead.

DB

Unlike other global ecologicalproblems, he stressed, the crisis is

completely irreversible. Extinc-tion is forever, said the Washing-ton-based Worldwatch Institute.

The Philippines, with morethan seven thousands islands, isconsidered by respected scientistsas one of the countries with thehighest degree of biodiversity inthe world.

Out of the 500 known coral spe-cies worldwide, about 488 coralspecies in 78 genera are found inthe Philippines. There are onlyabout 50 species of seagrasses inthe world. A total of 16 species canbe found in the country, and thisis the second highest diversity thatexist in one country; only Western

Australia has more with 17 spe-cies. At least 2,000 fish species arefound in the Philippines.

Regarding Henry from page 3 About 98 of mammal species

are endemic to the Philippines. Inthe last seven years, experts havediscovered 12 mammal species inthe country seen nowhere else on

the planet. The number com-pares with other countries likeBrazil, says Philippine fauna spe-cialist Dr. Lawrence Heaney of theField Museum of Natural Historyin Chicago. But compare theirsizes. For such a small area, thePhilippine rockets ahead.

Brazil has a total land area of 3,286,488 square kilometers whilethe Philippines has a total landarea of 115,800 square kilometers.Indonesia, another biodiversity-rich country, has a total land area of 741,101 square kilometers.

While its diversity is among thehighest, the Philippines ecosys-tems are among the most threat-ened. The US National CancerInstitute, which has worked withthe National Museum to find

genes from the countrys wild spe-cies that may help in the develop-ment of new anti-cancer drugs, lists the entire Philippine archi-pelago as among five biogeo-

graphical areas in the world con-sidered the hottest of the hotspots, a hot spot being an area whose high biodiversity is gravelythreatened.

Filipino scientist Dr. Lee Tal-bot agreed: A few decades ago, thewildlife of the Philippines was no-table for its abundance; now, it isnotable for its variety; if presenttrend of destruction continues,Philippine wildlife will be notablefor its absence.

Although no endemic species yet in the Philippines are reportedto have been extinct, several madeit to the list of rare, threatened andendangered species compiled bythe Conven-tion for InternationalTrade of Endangered Species(CITES), of which the country is

a signatory. Among these are the Philippine

eagle, tamaraw, pangolin, Philip-pine tarsier, Philip-pine palmcivet, calamanian deer and fruit

bats. All the marine turtles foundin the Philippines - the green sea turtle, hawksbill, loggerhead, ol-ive ridley, and leatherback turtle -are considered threatened rep-tiles, along with Philip-pine andestuarine crocodiles, lizards andphytons.

The following plants are listedby CITES as rare, threatened andendangered species: sandersalocasia, striped alocasia, pitcherplant, orchids, bungang ipot, ladys slipper, cycas or pitogo, allspecies of ferns, and cactus.

Once these species are gone, they are gone forever, leaving be-hind an imbalance in ecology andbeauty difficult to determine andrestore, said a Filipino environ-mentalist.
