Gayundin sinaVice-President Noli de Castro,Defense Secretary Gilbert Teo-doro, MMDA Chairman BayaniFernando, Pampanga Gov. EdPanlilio at Bro. Eddie Villanuevang JIL Movement.

Wala akong mabili ngayon namura.

Emerging in our local horizon?

The healing powers of water“FILIPINOS must now takestock,” Time magazine said onPresident Cory Aquino’s death.“Whom will they march with nowthat their saint has gone to meether God?”

You wondered. Thousandsmeanwhile wept, thrust the“Laban” sign, tossed flowers andrained yellow confetti on Cory’scoffin. They did so in the streets,in queues and at the wakes.“Cory Aquino’s magic is back,”read the Philippine Daily In-quirer’s (PDI) headline. “Indeath, she revives People Power.”

At the Manila Memorial Parkburial, people wept when theChurch recited, over Cory’s dust, the ancient prayer it says, whether one is statesman, ingilded coffin, or indigent squat-ter swaddled in buri-mat shroud.“May angels lead you to paradise.May the martyrs and the saintslead you to the holy city … .”

Ayala Avenue in Makati, where Aquino marched to defy adictator in 1983, and EDSA(Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue),where the People Power Revolu-

IN some developed countries, thepopularity of their leaders isclosely monitored. They have de-vised a continuing tracking sys-tem that in a manner of speak-ing takes the pulse of the nationand show how they view theirleaders.

This, of course, only gives atbest a sociological profile or po-litical picture of the country at agiven time. It indicates the moodand the sentiments, and the pre-vailing concerns of the people. Itshows the current cultural land-scape of a given place.

To a certain extent, it offers agood service. It can tell us manythings about the people and theplace, and these things can beuseful for whatever purpose wemay have in mind.

But it has to be said veryclearly that it does not make thestandards of what’s supposed tobe good and evil, right andwrong. It can only mirror, it canonly reflect the people’s state ofmind or something, but it doesnot create, much less dictate, what is supposed to be moral orimmoral.

We have to say this because

ONE day God went to checkHeaven’s pearly gates. He heardthem squeaking badly andwanted to see if St. Peter had al-ready oiled them. God asked St.Michael to go and check themout.

When Michael reached thegates he was not only surprisedto see Peter — as usual — sleep-ing on the job, but also the gatesleft ajar. Every now and then theygave out a gentle harmonioussqueak when a celestial straybreeze blew by.

“Peter, wake up!” St. Michaelsaid trying to control himself.“Didn’t God tell you to watchover the gates and oil them?”

“Uh? [HO-HUM] Ah … ehhr…,” St. Peter tried his best tohide a wide yawn escaping fromhis mouth. “Yeshh …, yes Lor ...,I mean Michael. I’m sorry.”

“Never mind, Peter! But whyhaven’t you done it yet?”

IT’S not a new word, but I amfascinated by it. Simply put, a cor-porative is a cooperative that isrun like a corporation. The basicdifference between a cooperativeand a corporation is the systemof voting. In a cooperative, stock-holders have one vote per mem-ber. In a corporation, stockhold-ers have as many votes as theirnumber of shares. This does notmean however that a cooperativecould not be run as efficiently asa corporation.

In a way, I am sort of redis-covering the cooperative move-ment, and regaining my faith init. At one time, I was Vice Chair-man of the DFA Multi PurposeCooperative, and I had the pleas-ant experience of increasing ourrevenues by expanding our busi-nesses. Other than that, I wasdiscouraged by the way many co-operatives have failed because ofmismanagement and infightingdue to internal politics.

Moving on to the presenttimes, I have been very encour-aged by the warm reaction of Ms.Elsa Bayani and Mr. Rene Abadto my suggestion that we shouldhelp in the computerization ofbarangay units by giving themreformatted and upgraded usedcomputers that are solicited frompersonal and corporate donors

there seems to be a runawaymentality that tries to equatepolling results and statisticaldata with the legal or moral stan-dards. In things sociological, eco-nomic and political, where opin-ions are given a lot of weight, survey results can be the decid-ing factor.

Businessmen, for example, are keen in knowing how themarket is thinking at the mo-ment, so they could make thenecessary adjustments to theirplans and moves.

Not so when we talk about le-gality and morality. A stricterand even metaphysical methodhas to be used to determinewhat’s supposed to be legal andmoral. There are certain realitiesthat do not depend on the shift-ing sands of opinion because theypertain more to the nature ofman and things, and this natureis permanent albeit dynamic.

Thus, in our country wherewe have population-control ad-vocates citing all sorts of surveysto justify their immoral posi-tions, this distinction and re-minder is worth reiterating. It’sactually a cheap act truly unwor-

thy of the dignity the people be-hind these polls struggle toproject.

We need to alert the more vul-nerable sectors of our society re-garding the chicanery played onthem and on all of us. Most ofthese surveys are blatantly bi-ased, if not rigged to come outwith tendentious results.

But going back to the properrole of these tracking systems, inthe US these days, they are wit-nessing through their monitor-ing devices some dramaticchanges in their political and so-ciological demographics.

In effect, they are saying thatthere’s a strong trend toward aneven more liberal culture. Liber-alism is becoming more main-stream. This is not so much aphenomenon that is emerging inthe horizon as something thathas already arrived in our midst.

This piece of informationshould be very interesting espe-cially to those who place greatimportance to faith and thethings of God. Liberalism is free-dom gone wild and has no othertendency but to precisely weaken

rubbed both eyes trying to focuson the conversation.

“The net? But didn’t I tell youthat it only wastes a lot of yourheavenly time?”

“I know, but you should reallycheck out this craze of social net-works down there!” Peter saidexcitedly.

“You mean social not-work-ing?” Michael snuffed

“Oh, come on, just give it atry,” Peter insisted.

“Okay, okay, okay,” Michaelsaid and took a seat. “Now whatam I supposed to do?”

“It’s so easy, all you have todo is click on the links,” Peter feltproud to be teaching the Archan-gel a thing or two.

St. Michael took the mouseand started surfing. “Let’s see,

I’m interested in checking outthis priest who’s been writingsilly articles,” Michael’s facelighted up with interest. “Whatdid you say his name was again,Peter?”

“Oh, you mean Father so-and-so?” Peter scratched his head.

“Yeah, that one!” Michael con-centrated intensely on the pageas it started to load.

“Yup, that’s him alright,” Pe-ter said rather blandly.

“You don’t look so excited,”the archangel noticed Peter’s ex-pression.

here and abroad. As I see it, the computeriza-

tion of barangay enterprises isthe next logical step to the com-puterization of the barangayunits. Needless to say, thesebarangay enterprises will mostlikely be organized as coopera-tives. When they are computer-ized, they would have a betterchance of being managed like cor-porations, thus giving them a bet-ter chance of surviving and grow-ing.

It has been more than eightyears since the Electronic Com-merce Act (ECA) was passed. Theexpectation then was to havedaughter laws and granddaugh-ter laws thereafter, but so farnothing has been passed. Mean-while, e-Commerce has not reallytaken off in the country. More soin the cooperative sector, very fewif ever have entered the onlinetrade.

Just like in the case of coop-eratives, I have recently revivedmy interest in e-Commerce, in-spired perhaps by my new friend-ships with Mr. Jay Aguilar andMr. Thomas Lee. tion she inspired was born, turned into seas of yellow, thePDI reported.

The “sovereign people simplytook over the streets to pay trib-ute” to Cory, Columnist AmandoDoronila pointed out. “The Yel-low Army’s … silent tribute toCory manifests a strong publicclamor for political leadershipthat exemplifies decency andhonesty …”

At Manila Cathedral rites, people close to Cory recalled dayswhen she “tred the winepress”alone. When Cory finally metNinoy, after weeks where he hadbeen half-starved in in Laur de-tention, “a meter of barbed wireseparated them,” recalled Ni-noy’s sister. “They could not evenhold hands.”

Fr. Catalino Arevalo SJ spokeof simple people who waitedhours just to bid goodbye to Cory.“It’s the only thing we can give,”a woman explained. “And shegave her all for us.” Her selfless-ness, faith and courage inter-locked into a strength that oth-ers could lean on. Dozens of offi-

cial scoundrels, clustered in frontpews, listened with blank faces.

Cory chose a grave next to herhusband — national hero Be-nigno Aquino Jr.— murdered 26years ago. The masterminds lurkunpunished in the shadows. Shedeclined state honors that, byright, were hers: from burial atLibingnan Ng Mga Bayani to tra-ditional gun-and-carriage hearse.

For over two decades, theMarcoses wheedled for such hon-ors for their father. So fierce waspeople opposition, that a badly-singed President Joseph Estradahastily backtracked. In hands ofthe crass, state funerals can turninto, “the tawdry privilege of thedespot.”

Departing from condolenceformulas, governments spokeglowingly of her integrity, resto-ration of constitutional rule andpeaceful transfer of power. “So,you’re the son of Senator Aquinoand President Cory,” SouthAfrica’s Nelson Mandela toldSenator Benigno Aquino III. “Youchose your parents well.”

EVERYONE, at one time or an-other, feels fatigued. And whowouldn’t like to have more en-ergy than they now have? Onesolution: drink up. Not booze butwater. The day before you’re go-ing to be out in the hot sun andphysically active – say a day atan open park – doctors advicethat you drink plenty of waterand continue to do so on the dayof the activity. This will guardagainst dehydration, which inturn can cause fatigue.

E. Drummond King, anAmerican triathlete, learned thehard way that it’s best to startdrinking a lot of fluids the daybefore his body is going to needthem. “The major problem is de-hydration and the fatigue thatcomes with it,” he says. “Now, Ispend the day before walkingaround with water bottle in myhand.”

The same suggestion is rec-ommended when you have flu.Dehydration happens when youhave flu so water is needed. Inaddition, water can provideneeded nutrients when you’retoo sick to eat.

Dr. Jay Swedberg, an associ-ate professor of family practiceat the University of WyomingCollege of Health Sciences, rec-ommends that you dilute fruitjuices and half with water. “Alittle sugar provides necessaryglucose, but too much can causediarrhea when you’re ill,” hesays. “Also, dilute sugar-sweet-ened softdrinks. And allow themto go flat before drinking becausethe bubbles can create gas in thestomach and make you morenauseated.”

Those with bladder infectionsshould also drink lots of freshwater. This is probably the singlemost important tip, for two rea-sons: comfort and health. “Somewomen get a urinary tract infec-tion and think, ‘Aha! It onlyburns when I go to the toilet,”says Dr. Elliot L. Cohen, assis-

tant professor of clinical urologyat Mount Sinai School of Medi-cine in New York City. “Theythen reason that they won’t haveto go if they don’t drink, so theydon’t – which is absolutely theworst thing they can do.”

The reason: The longer anyamount of urine stays in thebladder, the more bacteria thereare in it – E. coli doubles itspopulation about every 20 min-utes, according to Dr. DavidStaskin, assistant professor ofurology at Boston UniversitySchool of Medicine. More bacte-ria mean more pain. “Absolutely, the best thing a woman can doto fight the burning is drink flu-ids to flush out the bacteria thatare causing the inflammation,”Dr. Cohen explains.

“There’s a very strong argu-ment for drinking more fluidboth to prevent UTIs and totreat them,” Dr. Staskin says.“Studies have been performedwhere bacteria were mechani-cally introduced into the blad-ders of volunteers. But voidingjust twice effectively sterilizedthe bladder.”

The message is clear: Themore you drink, the sooner thepain will stop. And a hint: If yoururine’s clear, you’re drinkingenough of it. If it’s colored, you’re not.

It may sound elementary, butexperts agree that you shouldkeep your feet scrupulously cleanif you have foot odor. Use warm, soapy water and wash your feetas often as needed – severaltimes a day if you perspire a lotor notice an odor. “Scrub gentlywith a soft brush, even betweenyour toes, and be sure to dry yourfeet thoroughly,” says Dr. DianaBihova, a dermatologist and au-thor of Beauty from the InsideOut.

Generally, doctors advisethose with chapped hands tokeep their hands out of water.

‘We give her back to You, withgrateful but breaking hearts’

BY CATALINO AREVALO, SJ

IF I may, I will first ask pardon for whatmight be an unseemly introduction. In thelast days of President Cory’s illness, whenit seemed inevitable that the end wouldcome, the assignment to give this homilywas given to me by Kris Aquino. She re-minded me that many times and publicly, her mother had said she was asking me topreach at her funeral Mass. Always I toldher I was years older, and would go aheadof her, but she would just smile at this. Those who knew Tita Cory knew that whenshe had made up her mind, she had madeup her mind.

What then is my task this morning? Iknow for certain that if liturgical rules werenot what they are, she would have askedCongressman Ted Locsin to be here in myplace. No one has it in him to speak as fit-tingly of Cory Aquino in the manner andmeasure of tribute she uniquely deserves,no one else as he. Asked in an interview, she said that the address before the twoHouses of Congress at Washington she con-sidered perhaps the supreme shining mo-ment of her life. We know who helped herwith those words with which she conqueredAmerica. These last few days, too, everygifted writer in the press and other mediahas written on her person and political his-tory, analyzed almost every side of her lifeand achievement as our own “icon of de-mocracy”. More powerfully even, images ofher and of Edsa Uno have filled hour afterhour of TV time. Really, what else is left tobe said?

SO, Tita Cory, you’ll forgive me if I don’teven try to give a shadow of the great ora-tion that should be given here this morn-ing. Let me instead try to say some thingsthe people who persevered for hours on endin the serried lines at Ortigas or here inIntramuros can (I hope) more easily follow. This is a lowly tribute at one with “the oldsneakers and clothes made tighter by age, soaked by water and much worse for wear”of the men, women and children who bravedthe rain and the sun because they wantedto tell you, even for a brief and hurriedmoment, how much they love you. You truly“now belong among the immortals”. Butthese words are for those mortals who withbruised hearts have lost “the mother of apeople”. Maybe less elegantly than the semi-narian said to me Monday, they would liketo say also: “She was the only true queenour people have ever had, and she wasqueen because we knew she truly held ourhearts in the greatness and the gentlenessof her own.”

One of my teachers used to tell us that ifwe really wanted to know and understanda position held, we would have to learn itfrom someone fully committed to it. Justas only one who genuinely loves a person, really knows him or her also. So to beginwith, I turned to three real “experts onCory”; to ask them where for them the truegreatness of Cory Aquino lay. My firstsource thought it was in her selflessness, seen above all in her love of country-surelyabove self; yes, even above family. Her self-giving, then, for us; what she had received, all became gift for us. The second, thoughtit was in her faith her greatness lay, in hertotal trust in God which was also her great-est strength. And the third said it was inher courage and the unshakable loyalty thatwent with it. It was a strength others couldlean on; it never wavered; it neverbroke….Cory’s selflessness and self-giving;her faith (the Holy Father just called it “un-wavering”); her courage, her strength. MayI use this short list to frame what I will say?

O, let me name my experts now, if I may. They were three, all of them women closeto her: Maria Elena Aquino Cruz, whom weknow as Ballsy, Maria Aurora AquinoAbellada, Pinky to her friends; and VictoriaElisa Aquino Dee, Viel to the family. Krisand Noynoy are the public figures; they canspeak for themselves. I hope they will for-give me that I did not ask.

First, selflessnessFirst, then, her generous selflessness.

For us this morning what is surely most tothe point is her love of country. When herfinal illness was upon her already, she said-most recently at the Greenmeadows chapel(her last public words, I think)-that she wasoffering her suffering, first to God, then forour people. I heard that grandson Jiggyasked her why first for country and people, and she said that always the priority line-up was God, our country and our people, and then family. On radio, the other night,

the commentator asked an old woman inline why she stood hours in the rain to getinto La Salle. Early on, on TV, theyran many times the clip from a last inter-view. She says, “I thank God, and then allof you, for making me a Filipino, for mak-ing me one of you. I cherish this as one ofthe truly great gifts I have received.” A fewweeks from her death, she could say that;without put-on or the least insincerity. “Ithank you, for making me one of you.”

Her selflessness, her self-gift. PopeBenedict likes to say that the God whomJesus Christ revealed to us, is Father. AFather who is wholly self-gift; the God“whose nature is to give Himself”-to giveHimself to us, in His Son. And, the Popesays, that is what is the meaning of Jesusand the life of Jesus, and, by discipleship, what the Christian’s life is meant to be. WeChristians, too, we must give ourselvesaway in the self-giving of love.

“Ang buhay po nya at sarili. Kaya pomahal na mahal namin sya.” In the lastdays, when finally and reluctantly still sheadmitted she had much pain, I kept think-ing that only a couple of weeks before, forthe first time publicly, she said that she wasoffering it up first of all for us.

Second, her faithSecond, her faith. Pinky says, it was her

mother’s greatest strength; it was what wasdeepest in her. Her faith was her bedrock, and it was, bedrock. Frederick Buechner theordained minister and novelist likes to saythat through his lifetime, he’s had manydoubts, even deep doubt, daily doubts. “ButI have never really looked down into thedeep abyss and seen only nothing. Some-how I have known, that underneath all theshadows and the darkness, there are theeverlasting arms.” I think Cory’s faith waslike that, not in the multiplicity of doubts(even if, in a life so filled with trial, theresurely were doubts too), but in the certaintyof the everlasting arms. More than once shetold me, “Every time life painted me into acorner, with seemingly no escape, I alwaysturned to Him in trust. I knew He wouldnever abandon us if we trusted in Him. Andyou know, somehow, He found a way outfor us.” And so Pinky says, “Mom was al-ways calm even in the most trying times. She trusted God would always be there forus, She was our source of strength. Shemade this world seem so much safer andless cruel for us. And now that our sourceof strength is gone, we have to make ourfaith something more like hers. But weknow in our hearts that in every storm shewill watch over us from heaven.”

Devotion to MaryWithin this faith was her devotion to

Mary, the place Our Lady of Fatima and therosary held in her life. All we can say onthis, this morning is that Our Lady trulyhad a special, living presence in her life:Mary was, for Cory, true mother and incom-parable friend; as we say in the hymn-vita,dulcedo et spes: life, sweetness and hope. No, Mary was not the center of her faith, but its air, its atmosphere; and the rosary, her lifeline through every trial and crisis. In the long harsh months of her illness, Sis-ter Lucia’s beads almost never left herhands. She was holding them, as last Sat-urday was dawning and her years of exilewere at last done, when we know her Lady“showed unto her, the blessed fruit of herwomb.”

Third, courageLastly, her courage, her strength. Her

children tell us that their father was onlyable to do what he wanted to do, becauseher loyalty and her support for his purposeswas total, so she practically raised them upas a single parent. Ninoy himself wrote, again and again, that he endured impris-onment and persecution, leaning so muchon her courage and love. And after hisdeath, when she could have withdrawn ina way “safely” to her own life with her chil-dren at last, she stayed on her feet andfought on in the years that followed, through the snap elections and what wentbefore and after them, through her presi-dency and the seven coup attempts whichtried to bring her down. Even after she hadgiven up her rule, could she not have said

“enough”, and we would all have under-stood? But with not the least desire for po-sition or power again, whenever shethought the spaces of freedom and the truegood of our land were threatened, she wentback to the streets of struggle again.Once again she led us out of the apathy weso readily fall into; once again she called usout of our comfort zones to the roads of sac-rifice.

Purity of heartHere, even hesitantly, may I add one

trait, one virtue, to those her daughtershave named? One day Cardinal StephenKim of South Korea asked if he might visither. Through Ballsy, she said yes. It was aday Malaca?ang was “closed”; they weremaking up the roster of members of theforthcoming Constitutional Convention.Someone from the palace staff ordered usturned away when we came; it was Ballsywho rescued us. Stephen Kim, hero andsaint to his own people-perhaps, along withCardinal Sin, one the two greatest AsianCatholic prelates of our time-spent some 45minutes talking with her. When we wereon our way back, he said, “I know why theLord has entrusted her with power, at thismost difficult time…It is because she is pureof heart. She has no desire for power; evennow it is with reluctance she takes it on.And she has done this only because shewants to do whatever she can for yourpeople.” He said, “She truly moves me bythe purity of her spirit. God has given agreat gift to your people.”

With this purity of heart, in the schemeof the Christian Gospel, there is joined an-other reality which really, only the saintsunderstand. It is suffering. How often (it isreally often; over and over through theyears) she spoke of suffering as part of herlife. Much contemporary spirituality speaksof suffering almost as the epitome of all evil. But in fact for all the saints, it is a mysterythey themselves do not really understandnor really explain, Yet they accept it qui-etly, simply as part of their lives in Christ. There is only one painting she ever gaveme. Kris said then, when her mom gave itto me, that it was her mom’s favorite. Thepainting carries 1998 as its date; Corynamed it “Crosses and roses.” There areseven crosses for the seven months andseven weeks of her beloved Ninoy’s impris-onment, and for the seven attempted coupsduring her presidency, and many roses, multicolored roses all around them. At theback of the painting, in her own hand, shewrote a haiku of her own: “Crosses androses/ make my life more meaningful./ Icannot complain.” Often she spoke of her“quota of suffering.” When she spoke of herlast illness, she said: “I thought I had filledup my quota of suffering, but it seems thereis no quota. I look at Jesus, who was whollysinless: how much suffering he had to bearfor our sake.” And in her last public talk (itwas at Greenmeadows chapel), the firsttime she spoke of her own pain: “I have notasked for it, but if it is meant to be part ofmy life still, so be it. I will not complain.” “Itry to join it with Jesus’s pain and offering. For what it’s worth, I am offering it up forour people.” Friends here present, I tell youhonestly I hesitated before going into this, this morning. But without it, part of thereal Cory Aquino would be kept from view.Quite simply, this was integral to the loveshe bore for her people.

Thanks to her childrenAT this point, may I, following the lead

Mr. Rapa Lopa has given, just speak a wordof thanks to President Cory’s children, whoshared so much of her service and her sac-rifice. They have almost never had theirfather and mother for themselves. For somany years, they have been asked to shareNinoy and Cory with all of us. And becauseof the blood and the spirit their parents havepassed on to them, they too gave with gen-erosity and grace the sacrifices we de-manded of them. Ballsy and Pinky, Viel andKris, your husbands and your children, andSenator Noynoy, may we thank you thismorning from all our hearts, and may weoffer also the gratitude of the hearts of a

people now forever in your debt.I have used up all my time, some of you

will say, and I have not even approachedthe essential: her political life, that she wasour nation’s unique icon of democracy, thatCory Aquino who is know throughout theworld; was TIME magazine’s 1986’s womanof the year; she who led the ending of thedictatorship that had ruined our nation, thebearer of liberation, of freedom, and of hopefor a prostrate people.

So, by your leave, may I add one item, along this line at last. In October 1995,Milano’s Catholic University, conferred onher the doctorate honoris causa in the po-litical sciences (incidentally, only hertwenty-third honorary degree). This wasonly the fifth time this particular one hadbeen given since the university’s inception:the first time to an Asian, the first ever to awoman. She wanted, at the end of her lectiomagistralis, to spell out, perhaps for the firsttime with some explicitness and complete-ness, her personal political creed. She listedseven basic beliefs which, regarding politi-cal life , she said she tried to live by. Thenshe spoke of one more, “one more I maynot omit.” Perhaps the paragraph whichfollowed is worth citing here, even withoutcomment, because it has something to sayto our present hour.

(We cite her words now.) “I believe thatthe vocation of politics must be accepted bythose who take up the service of leadershipas a vocation in its noblest meaning: it de-mands all of life. For the life of one whowould lead his or her people-in our time asnever before-such a life must strive for co-herence with the vision aspired to, or elsethat vision itself and its realization are al-ready betrayed. That vision must itself bepresent, in some authentic way, in thosewho seek to realize it: present, in the wit-ness of their example; present, in a purityof heart vis-?-vis the exercise and usages ofpower; present, in an ultimate fidelity toprinciple, in a dedication that is ready tocount the cost in terms of ‘nothing less thaneverything.’ It is Cardinal Newman, I be-lieve, who said that in this world, we do goodonly in the measure that we pay for it inthe currency of our own lives. For us Chris-tians, there is always the image of Jesus, and the price his service demanded of him.And for me there has been, as a constantreminder, the sacrifice my husband offered, and the word that it has spoken, to me andmy people.” (Cory Aquino, end of citation)

ConclusionWith all this said, I am done. Ma’am,

tapos na po ang assignment ko. It has beenso hard to do what you asked. But I com-fort myself that these so many words reallydo not matter. What counts in the end isreally-what all this week has been; thesepast few days’ outpouring of our people’sgratitude and love; what will come after allthis today; what we will do, in the timesahead, in fidelity to your gift. I received atext last night from a man of some age andwith some history behind him. “She mademe proud again, to be Filipino.” Maybe thatsays it all. Cardinal Sin used to put it some-what differently. “What a gift God has givenour people, in giving Cory Aquino to us.”The nobility and courage of your spirit, thegenerosity of your heart, the grace and gra-ciousness that accompanied you always. They called it “Cory magic”-but it was thetruth, and the purity and beauty, clear andradiant within you, that we saw. And thehope that arose from that. And when thecrosses came to you and you did not refuseto bear them, more to be one with yourChrist and one with your people and theirpain. “Blessed are the pure of heart; for theyshall see God.”

Thank You Father in heaven, for yourgift to us of Cory Aquino. Thank You thatshe passed once this way through our liveswith the grace You gave her to share withus. If we give her back to you, we do it withhearts of thanksgiving, but now, oh, withbreaking hearts also, because of the great-ness and beauty of the gift which she wasfor us, the likes of which, perhaps, we shallnot know again.

“They came to me with onecry — DEMOCRACY.” — Cory Aquino

You have given our family honorbeyond anything we could ever have hoped to receive, thatno matter how great the sacrifices of my parents, I canhonestly say to all of you that for my family, the Filipinosare worth it…

But as Cory Aquino lived, so she remains in death: hav-ing accepted only the barest minimum in terms of the hon-ors of state, because she only held the position to accom-plish the transition back to democracy, and doing so witha scrupulous regard not to burden the public purse withfuss over her person. / For Cory, the presidency had al-ways been a means to an end, not a means in itself; so it istruly fitting she will be laid to rest with nothing morethan what she’d started out with, as a widow: a nation byher side, united in grief, and in a manner that ultimatelymanifests the power of the people and not of whoever hap-pens to comprise today’s officialdom.”

Doon akingsinabi, “She may not be the best president, but she did herbest as president.” Si Tita Cory mismo ang nagsabi sakanyang huling State of the Nation Address noong 1991,“I hope that history will judge me as favorably as ourpeople still regard me, because, as God is my witness, Ihonestly did the best I could. No more can be asked of anyman.”

Letters on CoryBY JUAN L. MERCADO

(Cory Aquino’s death have seen a flood of letters flow in. Thewriters range from hard nosed journalists, priests to book editor. They give intimate insights into this “simple housewife” whotoppled a dictatorship and those turbulent yet exhilarating years– JLM ).

ARNOLD Zeitlin served as Associated Press bureau chief inManila until expelled by the Marcos regime. He now visitingjournalism professor at Guandong University. He wrote:

“After hearing of Ninoy’s murder, I went to Cory’s ChestnutHill house. I took my two daughters because I didn’t think Icould handle visit alone. When i entered the house, Cory wascoming down the stairs. “Oh, Arnold,” she said, “I never thoughtit’d come to this.”

The house was mad. reporters, TV cameras, including a Japa-nese crew. Cory beckoned me to sit beside her as reporters threwquestions. One woman from Time asked a quesiton that toucheda Cory nerve. I don’t even remember what the question wasnow. “You don’t know Ninoy!” she shouted. I patted her arm.She calmed…

On her return from Ninoy’s burial, she appeared at a Cam-bridge Memorial arranged by Ben Brown of Harvard. Again, she asked me to sit by her. She was much more in control. Areporter addressed her mistakenly as “Mrs Marcos.....”

There was an embarrassed pause. Cory broke it by sayingsternly, “I don’t think Imelda would have liked that, too.” Itwas then that I wondered : Should I do an AP piece about Coryrunning against Marcos.

In January of her final year in office, I called on her inMalacanang. “167 days left, Arnold.” She was counting the dayswhen she could leave office.

“She once told me: Her goal as president was to make surethat no other woman would ever have to go through what shewent through when Ninoy was jailed after Marcos imposed mar-tial law. That goal she achieved. May she rest in peace.”

From Ireland, Redemptotist priest Patrick Martin emailed:“The memory I cherish is from the time of the snap electionand the coming of Marcos to Cebu - the one who claimed 90% ofthe vote and love of the people. Cebu was like an armed camp— “to protect him from love of the people?”

“Cory came a week later. No army. No armalites. Just wel-coming, hopeful, freely milling people at the Fuente Osmena.

“On the morning Marcos left, news filtered out that this wasso. I went down Jones Avenue and the was a slight air of uncer-tain hope. A few hours later, that changed to gloom as Marcosappeared on the Palace balcony - still here - still President!

“Later that evening he was gone. At the Fuente, there wasexhilaration, hope, and joy was unforgettable. Cory brought thisjoy and sense of pride to the people - a truly wonderful gift.

“Who will bring it now? Ar dheis De go raibh a anam. “Mayher soul be a God’s right hand.”

From Washington, former Wall Street Journal reporter EddieLachica wrote: “I felt Cory’s passing as a personal loss. Youprobably felt the same way.

“Some of us did bring to the table the best our powers andcircumstances allowed us. And Cory, in my view, did better thanmost. What makes me sadder is the little promise there is inthe succeeding generation’s ability to improve on or at leastpreserve what has been accomplished so far.

“I’m the least qualified to say this because I was not aroundto help Cory during her beleaguered presidency or even to paymy respects when she lay dying of cancer. Reporting the Aquinosin their Boston exile and Cory’s People’s Power triumph wasthe most satisfying thing I ever did in my life.

“I made a selfish career choice of leaving the post-MarcosPhilippine story for a more professionally rewarding Washing-ton beat. I have not been able do anything for the Philippinessince, and looking back I see what I have missed. I truly regretit.

‘I hope you continue to remind readers of the values of thegood people of our generation so that those who served well. .PS—The Washington Post devoted nearly half a page to Cory’sdeath, a lengthy tribute by Bill Brannigin, a fellow-People’sPower scribe. But not a single line for Gloria’s tete-a-tete withObama.”

Book Editor Carol Go wrote from Quezon City: “Twenty-three years ago, in response to a nighttime radio call by JaimeCardinal Sin, I rushed to EDSA. With me were my co-lectors inour parish church then to participate in what is now known asPeople Power.

“Many of us were still in our pajamas! Little did we knowthen that we’d be making history. That event would also signalthe toppling down of other dictatorial regimes around the world.

“I just want to say thank you. First, to God for keeping myfamily safe during those times; next, to Cory for being likeNinoy—undaunted in believing that the Filipino is worth dy-ing for.

“ My 20-year-old son will be playing the violin, with the USTSymphony Orchestra, during Cory’s wake at the Manila Cathe-dral. I hope he realizes that the woman in the casket, togetherwith millions of other ordinary citizens of the country, oncebought for him the freedom he now enjoys. God bless the Phil-ippines and the next generation of Filipinos. May He raise upfor us a new leader like Cory Aquino.”

From Hong Kong, former CNN staffer Hope Ngo wrote:“When they took the remains of Cory to Manila cathedral, I felttears welling up. I remembered, being university student— gal-vanized by that same lady in yellow, asking us : fight the dicta-torship that gripped the country in terror.

“I remembered marching down Ayala avenue to chants of‘Cory, Cory, Cory!’ and ‘walang babaril’ at the intersection wherestudents had been gunned down. I remembered the coveringcreation of the constitution — : the same one which the currentgovernment is trying to mangle today.

Today, the promise of a new dawn had vanished. In its placeare: cynicism, anger, desperation. When I saw myself turningmy press pass to a policeman, asking to be exempt from weird, rules of coding , I realized : I gave up core principles or leave., Ichose to leave.

The country is at a political impasse, with an improbablewanna-be forever leader at the helm. . Is the timing of Mrs.Aquino’s death her final gift to the Filipino people? Instead ofgiving the gift to the world, it is time to give the gift to our-selves as a nation?

A personal loss to me, tooBY FLORANGEL ROSARIO BRAID

THE death of Cory is a personalloss to me and to everyone whoyearns for the leadership that shepersonifies. Courage, integrity, transparency, moral ascendancy, service over personal gain.Theerosion of these virtues may ex-plain why we are divided, whythere exists this sense of helpless-ness. These past days both thosewho knew her well and thosewho had not met her but havebeen touched by her sincere lovefor people and country, had comeout to tell their stories. Let mealso add my own.

I first met Cory, the main ral-lying figure during the protestmarches organized by anti-Marcos groups, two of which Iwas actively involved with -Manindigan! and ConcernedWomen of the Philippines. Wewere part of the boycott againstcronies and the “piso-piso” cam-paign during the snap election.

We were surprised one daywhen she called saying she wan-

ted to talk to Bernie Villegas JoeRomero, Gabby Iglesias, BenMondejar and myself regarding areport on a multisectoral consul-tation that we had carried out. Here, we documented and ana-lyzed perceptions and visionsfrom people in several regions –their concerns regarding agricul-ture and agrarian reform, educa-tion, media, and other aspects ofour social, political and economiclife. Of course we were honoredand flattered that she should con-sult with us and pleased to learnthat she had read the alternativesproposed as she inquired whetherthey were viable. She was thenconsidering whether she wouldaccept the nomination for thepresidency. What impressed usmost was her humility, openness, and willingness to explore newideas.

Bernie Villegas and I, bothacademics, were later appointedto the Constitutional Commis-sion and had the opportunity totranslate frameworks and con-crete proposals contained in that

study. Some of our colleaguesfrom civil society (representingfarmers, women and the youth, human rights, and the religious),realized that we had been chosenby Cory herself, something thatcould never have happened un-der another presidency since wedid not have either political oreconomic clout. If I were to namethree people who made a signifi-cant influence in my life, onewould be Cory. Every task I hadsubsequently undertaken wasguided by Cory’s ideal of servicefor the common good.

Cory’s governance style was toensure fair and equitable partici-pation of every sector of society. She respected the right of theConstitutional Commission tomake decisions without interfer-ence from the Executive or anyother external body. Exercisingexecutive privilege would havebeen anathema to her. Indeed, she would have made a credibleposter president when it comesto strict adherence to the rule of

noong 2007, “People used to com-pare me to the ideal president, buthe doesn’t exist and never existed. He has never lived.”

Pinatu-nayan niyang wala nga siyangalam tulad ng ipinaratang sakanya, “I admit that I have hadno experience in cheating, steal-ing, lying or assassinating politi-cal opponents!”

Ayon sakanyang talumpati sa Kongresong Estados Unidos noong 18Setyembre 1986, “Wherever Iwent in the campaign, slumarea or impoverished village. They came to me with one cry,

DEMOCRACY. Not food al-though they clearly needed itbut DEMOCRACY. Not work, although they surely wantedit but DEMOCRACY. Notmoney, for they gave whatlittle they had to my cam-paign. They didn’t expect meto work a miracle that wouldinstantly put food into theirmouths, clothes on their back, education in their childrenand give them work that willput dignity in their lives. ButI feel the pressing obligationto respond quickly as theleader of the people so deserv-ing of all these things.”

Kailangang kumilospara sa totoong “People empow-erment.”

Tuloy ang laban!— 11 Agosto 2009, ika-11:08 NU;

Promdi from page 3

BY ARIEL C. SEBELLINO

Ariel C. Sebellino, of the PhilippinePress Institute writes for theMabuhay an occasional column en-titled Murmurings. Here he recountshow he spent the 5 days from Presi-dent Cory’s death on August 1 to herfuneral on August 5. – Editor

AUGUST 1 — I woke up to an over-cast and rainy Saturday morning thatwas made gloomier by the sad newsof former President Corazon C.Aquino’s demise. For thirty minutes,I remained quiet and gathered mythoughts.

The first thing that came to mindwas yellow. This color has never beenmy favorite until a meek and reluc-tant yet defiant figure stood flashingthe signature L or laban sign, proudlywore it twenty-three years ago. Nei-ther was Tie A Yellow Ribbon my lastsong syndrome.

The downtrodden morning greet-ing was no good way to start or evenlast the day. But everything yellowonce more has painted the hue-lesssky and overridden typhoon Jolina.

August 2 — The second day ofmourning was a feast of smorgasbordof news and sound bytes from peopletaking turns reminiscing Cory. Pe-rennial political fiends could not helpbut glorify the remarkable deeds ofthe late president who in 1986 wasmerely an instrument of a lethargicand fearful nation that eventually re-gained freedom and democracy.

Perhaps the most awaited storywas Kris Aquino’s who appeared inher Sunday afternoon television pro-gram The Buzz from which she tooka leave of absence as co-host duringher mother’s critical days. The mostvisible and outspoken of Mrs.Aquino’s daughters recounted everydetail of the family’s ordeal.

I was weepy again. This was thesecond time I shed tears shamelessly.Any person who lost a mother not solong ago, would. For many Filipinos, she was a mother they wish they had.Occasionally I would choke up whenpoignant scenes and tearjerker state-ments on Tita Cory were shown ontelevision.

August 3 — It was impossible forme to reach the office in Intramuros.Roxas Boulevard was not passable. IfI have given up and gone back homeimmediately, I would have not caught

a glimpse of the throngs of people wholined the whole stretch of the boule-vard and the slow maneuver of thelowly truck cascading with flowersthat bore the remains of the late iconof democracy. This time, people fromall walks of life took to the streets toshow gratitude and love. For theAquino family, this gesture was farmore heartwarming than a State Fu-neral.

August 4 — I woke up very early.I was going to drop by the Manila Ca-thedral which is just a stone’s throwaway from my office. If I had to paymy last respects, I had to ready my-self with the long line of people want-ing to catch President Cory for thelast time. I braved the rain and wind.I got wet. I bought some ribbons forfamily members and close neighborsto wear on the day of the burial thenext day even if we only had to watchthe entire final rites on television.

For eighteen months and into herfinal days, Tita Cory was as frail as awilting flower. But as her remains liein state, she was as peaceful as a saint-in-waiting. Quickly looking at herface, I thought the physical sufferinghas been rewarded with a blissfuleternal rest. She had been a trium-phant living hero. Like an obedientparishioner, I made the sign of thecross. Her countenance was a divinevision.

The public viewing was tempo-rarily halted noontime to give way tothe necrological service at the ManilaCathedral. A few meters from thePPI office, we could here the prayersand music boom that solely engulfedthe historical Intramuros. I wouldfound out that when the viewing re-sumed, the queue of people stretchedall the way to SM Manila.

My conscience bothered me; so in-stead of just watching the eulogies ontelevision early evening, I sashayedback to the Cathedral to merely feelthe atmosphere and watch peoplepatiently wait for their turn for finalviewing of the late President’s re-mains.

August 5 — “Minamahal kongmga kababayan…For the family, theFilipinos are worth it…I thank youfor the privilege of being yourchild…Dad, it’s your turn to take careof Mom. You were her one and onlylove…It will take a lifetime for us tobe okay…I love you, Mom. Paalam.”

These were probably the most

heart-wrenching statements utteredby President Cory’s youngest daugh-ter Kris Aquino who was the last tospeak during the Requiem Masswhose rites were traditionally be-stowed for higher echelons of theRoman Catholic Church.

The eight hours-long journey fromthe Manila Cathedral to Cory’s finalresting place in the Manila MemorialPark beside her husband NinoyAquino in the family mausoleum, wasa sight reminiscent of the late Ninoy’sinterment — the only difference wasin numbers. Had the weather coop-erated, more people would havejoined the funeral procession. Butthen again, both burials were recordbreaking.

As I watched the entire event ontelevision, that was only interruptedby partial regular programming, Iwished I had gone out again andbraved the erratic weather one moretime. But as a sign of solidarity, someof us residents in the subdivisionwore yellow clothes. In our home, welit a candle surrounded with smallribbons and a Cory button pin whichI bought from the Manila Cathedrala night before.

There was another typhoon Kikowaiting to take over. I thought twotyphoons during the entire bereave-ment were no match to the sevencoup attempts the late Presidentweathered during her term. Theheaven must have grieved too. Andthe people did not seem to mind

For me, the full honors renderedby the military for Cory Aquino at theManila Memorial Park, was a defin-ing moment for all Filipinos.Through peaceful ways, the nationjoined her in putting an end to a dic-tatorial rule and in peace, thousandsof Filipinos walked her to her eter-nal repose. It is honor that also de-fines the character of the ‘mother ofPhilippine democracy’ from start tofinish.

The final and critical days of Presi-dent Cory up to the funeral offeredmemorable moments and things thatwill always remind us of her presence.Sincere, humble, simple, honest, soon and so forth. These descriptionsredounded and consistently echoedby those closed to the late President,by people who worked with her, andby simple folks who had faith in her.But yellow will always be sharply as-sociated with Cory.

Straits Times of Malaysia, New York Times to HonoluluStar Bulletin, Jakarta Post to Gulf News saluted her un-blemished integrity and efforts to rebuild from a corruptdictatorship without soft-peddling her failures.

“Midnight always threatened Aquino but neverstruck,” wrote Time.“She was a good woman whose good-ness alone, at the very end, was what proved enough, ifonly by an iota, to save her country.”

Despite coups, natural disasters, dogged opposition bycorrupt officials, she survived and ensured “continuationof democracy in her homeland.” In crises, “Cory Aquinorose above the bureaucratic procrastination, remindingher people: they once astonished the world with theirbravery — and that they could do it again.”

But only three years back the question seemed differ-ent. A bejeweled Imelda Marcos strode into a 80th birth-day bash, as little girls tossed roses, violinists played, andcronies clapped.

The “fluffy, cooing” front-page story “was devoid ofreproach,” observed Manuel Quezon III. So was (formerPress Secretary) Kit Tatad’s paean to Madame as a vic-tim of the uneven application of justice … Wasn’t theglowing coverage a sign of complete political restoration?,he asked. “The battle for history has been won — byFerdinand and Imelda Marcos.”

Now, the death of an officially powerless woman throwsthat judgement into question. Here is a leader who, bysheer force of example, compelled even rebels, like Rex

Robles, and Danny Lim, to admit that all power does notgrow necessarily from the barrel of a gun.

The road-less-travelled by Cory is sketched out in the“Austere are the Laurels of the Republic” homily. Thelate Fr. Horacio de la Costa SJ delivered it on the deathof Manuel Roxas in April 1948. It bears rereading today:

“Authority belongs to the people who may entrust itto whomsoever they freely choose. Neither does it endowthe (person) to whom it is entrusted with any special ofimpeccability or infallibility. He may not claim therebythe ‘divinity that doth hedge a king.’

“He must spend himself in the public interest asthough they were his own. Yet he may not derive anypersonal profit from his position. He is held accountablefor the authority he holds in trust.

“And when his mandate is revoked, he must be will-ing to relinquish that authority and return, a private citi-zen, to the ranks from which he came. Let him not ex-pect any reward, but the consciousness of having donehis duty and served his people and his God.

“For often, he will get no reward but this. Nay. Hemay find in the end his name vilified, his motives mis-represented, his deeds misjudged.

Cory worked by those standards. And people accordedlove her the “austere laurels of the republic”: their loveand gratitude.

“Now cracks a noble heart./ Good night (sweet lady)/May flights of angels sing them thee to thy rest.

faith and our perception of the spiritual and supernatu-ral world.

And while the general nature of this ideology is al-ready quite known, together with its history, assump-tions, consequences and implications, we need to knowits concrete manifestations, arguments and actual ten-dencies that vary from place to place, from person toperson, so we would be able to engage it more effectively.

It’s good to know its past as lived by a particular

people or even by a specific person. The past tells us alot about the present, just as the present can give usleads as to how the future will be.

It’s important that we get out of the confines of theo-ries, descend from the tower of principles, to get a hands-on, real-time experience of the breathing reality of lib-eralism as lived by actual, not virtual, persons.

We need to attune our styles and approaches, ourwords and reasonings to the mentality of persons soakedin liberalism. This is the challenge we have now locally. Our horizon is giving signs with colored clouds that re-flect what’s happening in many other places, especiallythe U.S.

These can come to our shore, and we better be pre-pared!

“Now what’s that supposed to mean,” Michael saidpuzzled.

“Oh, it’s just that most of the links in his page arebroken,” Peter said.

“I thought you said you were working on him the otherday,” the angel frowned at Peter.

“Yes, but I need time to figure his case out and …,”“Wait, let’s see check out this link that says prayer life

…,” St. Michael surfed back to the page and clicked onthe link. The screen went blank and there was a longerdelay this time. “This is taking an eternity,” Michael re-marked. Then the same error popped out.

“He must have something at least,” the angel saidquite concerned.

“Why don’t you try that one that says Related links,”Peter suggested.

“What’s that supposed to be?” Michael said.“I don’t know,” Peter shrugged his shoulders. The Archangel clicked on the link and the screen goes

blank and the message appears: PROHIBITED PAGE -MAY BE HARMFUL TO YOUR COMPUTER; TROJAN AP-PLICATIONS; MATURE CONTENT; ILLEGAL SOFT-WARE, etc.

“I’m done with this priest, I’m going to tell the Lordto erase his account!” St. Michael exclaimed.

“Come on, be patient. Give me some time and I’ll fig-ure a way to get his links connected,” Peter begged.

* * *May the Lord who clicks on the links of our life not

find them broken or unfortunately revealing that ourhearts and minds are far from Him. The page of our lifeis the only one we will have. It is something our Lordalways reads and it is up to each one to enrich and up-date that daily page so that we may be able to offer God anew love each time.

God clicks on some aspects of our life not because He’sout to investigate what’s wrong with us. Rather, He doesthis in order to see how He can help open us to new andfruitful horizons in our piety, sacrifice, good deeds, andabove all, how you and I can abide more with His will.

Let us foster a firm resolve to review and improve ourspiritual hyperlinks so that they truly link us back toGod’s heart. These links are: our prayer, sacrifice, thesacraments, virtues and our sincere love for the soulsaround us whom we can link back to God’s love.

Google, while Tom on the otherhand was one of the developers of the first Apple printer.

It is perhaps simply a matter of perspective, but origi-nally I was thinking that as soon as we teach the barangayunits and the barangay enterprises how to computerize, they will soon discover on their own how to “internetize”(my word invention?). My thinking changed when Mr.Hans Koch convinced me that it should be the other wayaround that they have to be connected to the Internetfirst. Hans another new friend, he is an American whohas adopted the Philippines as his new home. He is oneof the founders of Syndeo Media, a social networking sitejust like Facebook.

Putting two and two together, I now think that it wouldbe a good goal to put both the barangay units and thebarangay enterprises online, both of them having theirown good reasons to do so. Of course, the barangay unitshave their own local government units (LGU) to dependon, but why not make them independent once and forall, with the help of technology?

Knowledge is power we always say, but nowadays it isaccess to knowledge that makes us more powerful. Youmight say that the barangay units have other needs suchas health, education and livelihood, but with connectiv-ity to the Internet, these local villages could gain theknowledge that they need to become independent in meet-ing their health, education and livelihood needs.

It is interesting to note that some cooperatives arealready in the business of providing local services thatare good for the environment. As a matter of fact, it couldalso be argued that any activity that would grow any-thing from the soil or the water is good for the environ-ment. The only thing that is needed now is a means forthe cooperatives to sell their products to the outside world, and selling online is certainly one good way.

People are more important than machines I alwayssay. It is for this reason that I am now calling on anyoneand everyone who knows anything about computeriza-tion and “internetization” (another word invention?) tocontact me, so that we could all work together in empow-ering the local villages.

too tender to touch, Dr.John Abruzzo recom-mends applying a crushed-ice pack. “The ice will havea soothing, numbing ef-fect,” explains the directorof the Division of Rheuma-tology at Thomas JeffersonUniversity. “Place the icepack on the painful jointand leave it for about 10minutes. Cushion it with atowel or sponge. Reapplyas needed.”

The best way to cooldown an acute flare-upcaused by backpain is withice, says Canadian pain re-searcher Ronald Mellzack. It will help reduce swellingand the strain on yourback muscles. For best re-sults, he says, try ice mas-sage. “Put an ice pack onthe site of the pain andmassage the spot for sevento eight minutes,” he in-structs. Do this for a dayor two.

Water, anyone?

But in some instances,a therapeutic soak is in or-der. “For an inexpensiveway to achieve the samemoisturizing effects pro-duced by skin creams, sim-ply soak your hands inwarm water for a few min-utes. Then pat off excesswater and apply vegetableor mineral oil to the dampsurface to seal in mois-ture,” says Dr. HowardDonsky, associate profes-sor of medicine at the Uni-versity of Toronto.

Constipation? Expertsagree that the first thing aconstipated individualshould do is check his diet. The foremost menu itemsfor battling constipationare dietary fiber and liq-uids. Lots of both are es-sential to keep the stoolsoft and to help it passthrough the colon.

The same thing applieswhen you are having diar-rhea. “The type of food youeat doesn’t really matterthat much,” says Dr. LynnV. McFarland, a researchassociate with the Depart-ment of Medical Chemistryat the University of Wash-ington. “The most seriousthing is to make sure yourfluid intake is high.”

Though sufferers don’tfeel like consuming largeamounts of liquids duringbouts of diarrhea, expertsclaim that increasing fluidintake is vital to ward offdehydration.

Fluids that contain saltand small amounts ofsugar are particularly ben-eficial, as they help thebody replace glucose andminerals lost during diar-rhea. A good “rehydrationfluid” can be easily madeby adding one teaspoon ofsugar and a pinch of saltto one quart of water.

If you have bad breath, don’t drink other liquids;gulf only water. Coffee, beer, wine and whiskey areat the top of the list of liq-uid offenders. Each leavesa residue that can attachto the plaque in yourmouth, and infiltrate yourdigestive system. “Eachbreath you take spewstrace of these back to theair,” says Dr. Jerry F. Tain-tor, author of The OralReport: The Consumer’sCommon Sense Guide toBetter Dental Care.

Those with kidneystones should likewisedrink lots of fresh water.Regardless of what kind of

stone you’re had, “by farthe single most importantpreventive measure is toincrease water consump-tion,” declares Dr. StevanStreem, head of the sectionof stone disease andendourology at the Cleve-land Clinic Foundation inOhio.

How much watershould you drink?“Enough to pass twoquarts of urine a day,” saysDr. Peter D. Fugelso, medi-cal director of the KidneyStone Department at St.Joseph’s Medical Center inCalifornia. “If you’ve beenworking out in the gardenall day under the hot sun, that could mean you’llneed to drink two gallons,”he adds. “It’s the amountof urine that matters.”

Water in the form of icehas several therapeuticpowers. It comes handy tothose suffering from gout.If the affected joint is not

from page 6law and separation of powers. It is ironic to think thatthis president who never took advantage of her power, who willingly shared it, and gave it up when her timecame, would most likely be judged by history as one ofthe most powerful leaders.

During her six-year term, Congress enacted enablinglaws on provisions that created new governance struc-tures – Local Government Code, Cooperatives Develop-ment Authority, the Ombudsman, Commission of HigherEducation and a Department of Science and Technology,Commission on Human Rights, the National Commissionon Culture and Arts, autonomous regions in Cordilleraand Mindanao, social justice structures – a comprehen-sive agrarian reform program, and laws that ensuredadequate social services to the poor and marginalized.Even more noteworthy is her own example of respect forpublic accountability. Cory spent her retirement years pro-moting cooperatives, microfinance, and the pursuit ofpeace by rejecting attempts to change the Charter througha Constituent Assembly. Hers has always been a sobervoice, eschewing any form of change that involves vio-lence and extra-constitutional means. Her wisdom comesfrom a wellspring of deep spirituality and faith. In life, she restored freedom and pride in the Filipino; in death, she is doing the same thing - helping us re-discover ourown capacities for greatness. The spontaneous comingtogether of people from all walks of life and faiths; theyoung, the old, the rich and the poor is again re-kindlingthe spark of Edsa One. Reminiscent of Ninoy’s funeraland the four days in 1986, people have gone out into thestreets, braved the rains and the long queues to get aglimpse of Cory, to thank her, and perhaps to imbibe hercourage and strength that would enable us to face thechallenges in these trying times.

Kaugnay nito, sinabi niKint.

nobyl nuclear power plantsa Rusya noong panahongiyon.

“May sapat siyang da-hilan noon.
