City commemorates Black WednesdayThe City of Tshwane joined the rest of the country in commemorating the 37th anniversary of Black Wednesday. On that fearful day, 19 October 1977, the apartheid government decided to silence major newspaper publications, banned free speech and doubled their efforts to harass journalists, black and white alike, in what became known as Black Wednesday. “We need to reflect and re-emphasize that as the country celebrates 20 years into our freedom and democracy, we can proudly state without fear or favour that indeed the media freedoms we enjoy today are and should be irreversible,” said Cllr Terence Mashego, the acting Executive Mayor of Tshwane, while addressing a crowd on the lawns of Freedom Park. Cllr Mashego said that the City had decided to join the media, because it remains its responsibility to innovatively identify and offer integrated development services and resources that enable media development and diversity. He also announced that the City would host an Inaugural Media Development and Diversity Summit on 13 November 2014. The summit will culminate in a development compact with the media, the community, institutions of higher learning, NGOs and other government agencies to collectively craft a long-term framework

for media development and support as part of Tshwane Vision 2055. The summit will include presentations, a book launch, lunch-hour talks, exhibitions and information displays on the following themes: Community media funding and advertising, Social campaigns and media partnerships, Media freedom, access to information, Ethics, skills and training, Ownership, distribution, Digitization, new media and the internet, Classification, censorship and self-regulation.

Words: Staff Reporter

There is still no suspected or confirmed case of Ebola in South African or its neighbouring countries. This is while the total number of 8997 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) have been reported in seven affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Spain, and the United States of America) up to the end of 12 October. There have been 4493 deaths.

There are 220 new cases including 44 deaths reported on 12 October 2014. The last confirmed cases in Senegal and Nigeria, were reported on 29 August 2014 and 08 September 2014 respectively.

The outbreak continues to accelerate. According to the World Health Organisation, half of the nearly 5,000 cases occurred in the last three weeks, and that it was not unthinkable that 20,000 could become infected before the outbreak is over. However, most cases are concentrated in only a few localities.

The number of suspected and confirmed Ebola infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which occurred independently of the one in West Africa and involves a different virus strain, has doubled to 62 within a week. However the government of DRC has launched a robust response to counter the outbreak.

NO CASE OF EBOLA IN SAIt is clear, however, that the situation in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone is deteriorating, with widespread and persistent transmission of EVD. An increase in new cases in Guinea is being driven by a spike in confirmed and suspected cases in the capital, Conakry, and the nearby district of Coyah.

Of the countries with localised transmission, Nigeria and Senegal are now approaching 42 days since the date of last potential contact with a probable or confirmed case. Both Spain and the United States continue to monitor potential contacts.

In response to the unprecedented EVD epidemic, the first-ever UN emergency health mission, the UN Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER) has been set up. Its strategic priorities are to stop the spread of the disease, treat infected patients, ensure essential services, preserve stability and prevent the spread to countries currently unaffected by EVD. WHO continue to be responsible for overall health strategy and advice within the Mission, and has now moved its base of operations from Conakry, Guinea, to the UNMEER Mission headquarters in Accra, Ghana. A four-day crisis management and operational planning meeting will take place in Accra from 15 October..

The workshops will take place every 2nd month and we will beinviting record label executives, musicians, producers and other industry experts to share their knowledge of the industryand highlight some of the most important aspects of being inthe music industry.

CAREERS

1. Attitude Attitude is one of the most important aspects of obtaining employment. A potential employer wants to see a high level of energy and a sign of an employee's future dedication. If you attend the interview with no energy or motivation, the interviewer will very quickly make the decision not to hire you. Pay special attention to your body language.

2. Qualifications A prospective employer may see qualifications on paper, but when it comes down to it, you also need to show those qualifications. A potential employer will dismiss the idea of hiring you if you do not show aptitude.

3. Questionable History If you have gaps in your employment with no good excuse as to why you were not working, chances are you might not get the job. An employer wants to feel like they'll be able to retain employees, and long periods of unemployment on your CV will send red flags to potential employers about stability.

4. Improper Dress When going to an interview, 'its important for you to dress appropriately. Business casual attire is the best way to go for most interviews – it shows a certain level of professionalism and care. If you aren't dressed appropriately for your interview you

7 Good reasons you weren't hired

won't receive a job offer.

5. Nervousness Unfortunately, nervousness will never work in your favour. If you appear nervous in an interview, your potential employer will question your ability to perform in public – try your best to always maintain composure.

6. Misaligned Objectives Just as you have an idea of what you would like to earn, so does your potential employer. If the hiring manager feels that he or she cannot meet your salary needs, they probably won't offer you the job.

7. More Suitable Candidates If you don't give the hiring manager a stellar interview and someone else has, chances are the other candidate will get the job. If you really want the job, you have to properly prepare for the interview – put your heart in the interview – research, research and do more research. Draw up a list of possible interview questions and practice them beforehand, this will help you to answer the interviewer more confidently as well.

DTI releases black empowerment amendment act

The Department of Trade and Industry (dti) has released the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Amendment Act No. 46 of 2013. The act was assented by President Jacob Zuma and published for general information in Government Gazette No. 37271 (Notice No. 55) of 27 January 2014. The amendment act aims to strengthen the implementation of B-BBEE and its reporting across the economy, as well as to put in place mechanisms to deal with non-compliance. The act has several objectives, including aligning it with other legislation that deals with B-BBEE and the Codes of Good Practice. It also seeks to establish the B-BBEE Commission to create an institutional environment for monitoring and evaluating B-BBEE. The gazetted proclamation notice for the commencement of the B-BBEE Amendment Act No. 46 of 2013 has now been released in the Government Gazette. The commencement of the amendment act is from the date of gazette and is now enforced as law, said the dti. The operation of the act, said Minister Rob Davies, was necessary to enable the department to perform some of the functions embedded in the act. He said it was also imperative for the development of subordinate legislation, and to ensure the effective implementation of the Codes of Good Practice. Minister Davies said some of the key

material amendments in the act refer to the following:- Aligning the act and the codes, which comprises an interpretation clause extended to include a trumping provision that stipulates that the B-BBEE Amendment Act will trump any law that was in force prior to the commencement date of the act.- The establishment of the B-BBEE Commission, which will be created as an entity within the administration of the dti, headed by a Commissioner appointed by the Minister. The commission will be responsible for overseeing, supervising and promoting adherence to the act, as well as the monitoring and evaluation of B-BBEE.- Offences, penalties and prohibitions in relation to fronting practices and misrepresentation of the B-BBEE status of an enterprise. The amendment act sets clear penalties, which include a minimum penalty of 10 years imprisonment (and/or a fine) or if the offender is not a natural person, a fine of 10% of its annual turnover. Minister Davies said with the gazetting of the proclamation notice, these key material amendments will come into immediate effect. – SAnews.gov.za

Movie: 204: Getting Away with MurderCast: Mikey Schultz, Nigel McGurk, Faizal “Kappie” SmithDirector: Warren Batcheloran Graan

“204” means a full and permanent indemnity from prosecution in exchange for truthful testimony.Brett Kebble was a charismatic South African businessman whose meteoric rise to fame and fortune in the mining world was followed by a startling fall from grace. His life ultimately ended in a hail of bullets on a road in northern Johannesburg in 2005. But the story behind his death is so bizarre that it could come straight out of a mystery thriller. In this documentary, the three self-confessed killers, as well as Jackie Selebi, Glen Agliotti, Piet Byleveld, and the Kebble family, are interviewed, exploring a fascinating tale of greed, corruption, fraud, and murder. Exclusive first-hand accounts of the murder are included, and the belly of South Africa's dark underworld is revealed.

MOVIE REVIEW

Title: Rachel's BlueAuthor: Zakes MdaPublisher: Kwela

Award-winning author ZakesMda has proven himself unusually insightful into human nature, with a special knack for giving life to marginalised characters, with warmth and empathy. His love and knowledge of the reality of South Africa and its people has often been at the centre of his novels and plays. This latest novel taps into the same sense of shared humanity, this time against the setting of small-town America (where the author now lives), where all the elements of a close-knit community come into play. Written with Mda's usual mastery of character and narrative, the story revolves around Rachel and a violent rape that sets neighbours and friends against each other, and even creates tension in Rachel's own family. Drawing on actual legislation that is in place in some American states, Mda weaves in the thorny issue of visitation and custody rights for rapists when a child is conceived during the crime. Mda's characters are rich and real. There are no absolute heroes or villains in this story. Even the rapist is shown to have some redeeming character traits.
