The Tamil Nadu govern-ment has stopped the free supply of toor dal, edible oil and sugar to ration card holders through the public distribution system (PDS).

It is learnt that lack of funds forced the govern-ment to take the decision, which would help it save J450 crore a month. As a relief measure after the

outbreak of COVID-19, the government provided the three commodities, along with rice, free of cost to all cardholders from April to July. Initially, it had given a

cash support of J1,000 each to the cardholders. In June, another round of cash sup-port of J1,000 was provided in those districts that had intensified the lockdown.

From now on the card holders will have to pay up.

However the govern-ment will distribute free rice to all eligible card-holders till November.

After many months, the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood is witness-

ing the implementation of a traffic diversion in one part on a trial basis.

Since Monday last, the Anna Nagar division of the Chennai City Traffic Police has been examining the feasi-bility of a new traffic arrange-ment on the stretch between the Anna Arch and the Anna Nagar Roundtana.

Incidentally, both the Arch and the Roundtana, set apart by a few kilometres, are among the most popular land-marks in the Anna Nagar neighbourhood and have evolved from a quiet residen-tial neighbourhood to a busy high density traffic zones.

A personnel posted at the Chennai City Traffic Police in Anna Nagar explained that

on a trial basis, the stretch of A Block, Anna Nagar Third Street, connecting Crescent Road and theThird Avenue, has been converted as one-way traffic zone.

Consequent to the new ar-rangement, motorists pro-ceeding from Anna Nagar Roundtana towards Anna Arch will not be allowed to take a left turn on A Block 3rd Street, off Third Avenue.

Likewise, the traffic per-sonnel said that those driving from Anna Nagar Fourth Avenue, which is in popular parlance called the Shanthi Colony Road, to A Block 3rd Street and taking ‘U’ Turn at the Shanthi Colony (Third Avenue) traffic junction to reach A Block 3rd Street, have been disallowed from taking the ‘U’ Turn.

According to the Chennai City Traffic Police, Anna Nagar, as per the revised ve-

hicular movement arrange-ment, motorists on Crescent Road via A Block 3rd Street, have to mandatorily take a left turn towards Anna Arch.

There are other changes as well. Those coming from Roundtana and proceeding to Crescent Road have to now go through the Third Avenue, turn left on A Block 4th Street and then proceed to A Block 11th Streets and A Block 7th Cross Street (West).

Also the vehicles plying from Anna Arch to Crescent Road have to go till Round-tana, take a ‘U’ turn and then go en route through 3rd Av-enue, turn left on A Block 5th Street, proceed to A Block 11th Street and A Block 7th Cross Street (West).

If the system works well, the trial arrangement will be made permanent, the traffic personnel said.

The Government Order (GO) released the detailed (SOP) Standard Operating Procedure on the opening of the gymnasiums in the state. Individuals should maintain a distance of six feet as far as posible. Gym equipment such as cardio

and strength machines should also be placed six feet apart.

The government has advised gyms owners to utilise outdoor space as much as possible and to create separate entry and exit points. Air-condition-

ers are allowed but the temperature should be in the range of 24 degree Celsius to 30 degree Cel-sius. Wearing face masks is made mandatory while entering the gyms. How-ever, during the workout, masks can be replaced with visors. The patrons should be allowed entry only after screening them through thermal scanners.

The Cyber Crime Cell of the Anna Nagar police is conducting investiga-tions into the ‘intrusion’ of a stranger in the virtual world, who posted obscene comments, during an on-line class being conducted by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar school.

L i k e m a n y o t h e r schools, the Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar had also started conducting classes online for students. Last month when one such online class was being con-ducted for students of class IX, suddenly the teacher found an ‘intruder’ making obscene comments. The messages were sent by a user, who did not have valid credentials of stu-dents. After the teacher

escalated the issue to the school principal, he lodged a complaint at the Raja-mangalam Police Station. The personnel there trans-ferred the case to the Anna Nagar Cyber Crime Cell, which is conducting probe into it.

According to a police officer, the principal had told the investigators that he did not suspect any student of the school to be involved in the incident. The ‘intruder’ had illegally gained access to the online class. “Our probe is still under way. We hope to identify the suspect based on digital footprints,” the officer added.

The incident, however, rattled parents on not only the Kendriya Vidyalaya Anna Nagar but also those whose children study in

other schools.“Already there were

concerns over the safety aspect of online classes. This incident has only confirmed our worst fears,” said Shylaja, a parent of a class X boy, who studies in a private school in Mogap-pair, where too online classes are being conduct-ed. “Earlier we had read about obscene visuals be-ing beamed on such online forums during meetings.

However, a teacher of a private school in Anna Nagar said a one-off inci-dent cannot be the basis for such fear. “This was a random incident. Other-wise online classes, with certain safety features, are the best option to impart education in these times when we are unable to open schools to the novel coronavirus disease pan-demic,” the teacher said. “Parents need not worry unnecessarily. There are enough checks and bal-ances in the system,” she added.

200 Koyambedu traders to shift to MOGAPPAIR’S POPULAR PLAYGROUND

If everything goes as per plan, as many as 200 trad-ers in the Koyambedu

Wholesale Vegetable and Fruits Market, which has been shut down following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, will soon shift to a popular playground in the Mogappair neighbourhood.

The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), which manages the Koyambedu Wholesale Mar-ket, which is Asia’s largest perishables market, has de-cided to allot temporary space to 200 of the 1, 985 retail traders, at the Dr Ambedkar Vilayatu Thidal on Eri Scheme Road in Mogappair. The vast playground is very popular among local resi-dents for walking, exercising and playing.

After the novel coronavi-rus outbreak, the Koyambedu

Wholesale Market was shut down and temporary shops were allotted for many of the trades in far off Thirumazhi-sai in the neighbouring Tiru-vallur district. Now with re-tail traders, who occupied small shops in the market complex measuring about 150 to 300 square foot area, are being allotted alternative spaces. As part of this plan, 200 such traders will be given space at the Dr Ambedkar Vilayatu Thidal (playground), which is less than a kilometer away from the Mogappair East Bus Depot.

Sources said that more than 1,400 traders have ap-plied to the CMDA request-ing allotment of space at the Dr Ambedkar Vilayatu Thi-dal. However, the Koyambe-du Vegetables, Fruits and Flower Merchants Welfare Association has submitted a representation to the CMDA’s Market Management Com-

mittee urging it to adopt a transparent procedure for al-lotment of space.An office bearer of the association, re-questing anonymity, said that it would be better if the CMDA’s Market Manage-ment Committee allots the space in Mogappair based on drawal of lots. “That will be the most transparent method as otherwise it will lead to unnecessary accusations that

the allotment has been made based on recommendations,” he said.

The CMDA is exploring the option of allotting the temporary space on rota-tional basis.

For residents of Mogap-pair though, this development has both advantages as well as disadvantages. The advan-tage is that till the pandemic is over they will have access

to vegetable and fruits shops in their vicinity. However, the disadvantage is that they fear that the playground could attract hundreds of shoppers thereby converting it into a coronavirus hotspot. Officials though are confident that with strict enforcement of physical distancing and mask wearing norms the disease spread could be curtailed.

Residents of the city need not go to private labs for voluntary COVID-19 tests anymore as The Greater Chennai Corpora-tion has opened up its sample collection centres for COVID-19 tests. Now residents of the city need not go to private labs and it is a boon for those who fear exposure to the virus.

Earlier, samples of resi-

dents were taken only if they were found to be the contacts of infected per-sons or recommended by the field officials for test-ing. Now, anyone can go to the sample collection centres and give their swabs for testing.

Those who want to test their samples could walk-in to the collection centres and provide their samples

along with their address and contact details. There are 37 sample collection centres run by the civic body, it is learnt.

Personnel at the sample collection centre would take samples only if the person has any one of the 18 symptoms.

The Directorate of Col-legiate Education has de-cided to complete all the admission formalities in August itself and is also plan-ning online classes from September.

More than three lakh stu-dents are competing for over 90,000 seats in government and government-aided Arts and Science Colleges in the State. For the first time, the Higher Education Depart-ment has launched an online admission process for stu-dents seeking Arts and Sci-ence courses in State-run colleges.

At present, a little over 300 government and govern-

ment-aided Arts and Science colleges provide UG, PG, B.Ed, M.Phil, and PhD courses for about one lakh students. Of the total, about 92,000 seats are available for various Arts and Science courses this academic year.

Since the government has ensured laptops for these students during Class 12, conducting online classes will not be a big issue, it is felt.

The number of seats in State-run Arts and Science Colleges was increased by more than 10,000 in the last two years since 11 new insti-tutions were established by the government.

A new order issued by the Tamil Nadu government has created confusion over the solatium amount announced for the families of the victims of COVID-19 frontline work-ers. According to the new GO, the State government has sanctioned Rs 25 lakh each for families of COV-ID-19 frontline workers who

died in the line of duty. How-ever, the new GO contradicts the announcement earlier that said the solatium for families would be increased from Rs 10 lakh to Rs 50 lakh. Following the an-nouncement, the government had also started collecting details of employees and workers who succumbed.

Wider or newly built pathways have only pushed pe-destrians on to the roads as in most places hawkers have set up stalls. As dusk falls, temporary eateries come to life on the footpaths and the stalls remain there even during the day. Work is on for relaying of the footpath on one side for a stretch at the Thirumangalam - Ambat-tur Main Road. Many a time the corporation ends up spending so much on footpaths only to be used by hawk-ers for their own purpose. It is high time action is taken to ensure roads and footpaths are not encroached.

The city’s green canopy is set to expand as The Greater Chennai Corporation had de-cided to create many new parks in the corpo-ration limits. The projects includes creation of play fields, wherever adequate spaces are available or play area for kids and a track with tiles laid for walkers.
