A Giant Equipment that is in Ruins at Sixth Avenue

Those passing by Sixth Avenue in Anna Nagar are bound to come across a giant equipment lying on the left hand side of the road at the junction where the road branches off to Fifth Avenue and leads to Blue Star next to the pumping station of the Chennai Metro Water Supply a n d S e w e r a g e B o a r d (CMWSSB or Metrowater in common parlance). This equipment that looks like two identical iron structures con-nected by a casting is opposite the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (now renamed as TANGEDCO) Anna Cente-nary Memorial Sub Station Building.

to were able to identify what this giant equipment is or which government agency had placed it at the spot. However, there are no two views about the fact that the giant structures are occupying considerable road space – that could otherwise be used for driving or parking vehicles – and that it is being misused as a cover for men who publicly relieve themselves.

Many believe that the equipment must have been placed there by the Metrowa-ter as it is located next to the pumping station facility.

“I have been passing by this road for many years now and have seen this huge iron structure lying on the road exposed to elements of na-ture. Going by the manner in which rust has formed on the

body of the structure, it is clear that it has been dumped here for ages with none to take care,” said Nawaz, a middle-aged man.

“I am sure this must be serving some purpose. But the point it should be lying here without cover. Or the au-thorities concerned must move it to a safer location. Passing vehicles won’t notice this that easily till they come closer. In all probability one can conclude that this struc-ture has now encroached on a space that would otherwise legitimately belong to the motorists,” said his friend Kaleel. “I hope the govern-ment authorities take notice of this and ensure that the equipment is moved to its rightful place at the earliest,” he added.

Abhishiktha at the age of five was not shown cartoons on television or mobile phone in-stead was introduced to the swimming pool at a summer coaching camp. The child was happy as she had her parents and elder brother accompany-ing her to the camp. Even then, initially the little one was very scared to get into the pool. But it was only a matter of time before Abhishiktha took to swimming like duck to water.

Her determination and per-severance that she carried all along for 13 long years seem to have metamorphosed her into a competent freestyle long distance swimmer. “It was probably my carefree nature as a child that made me take up swimming seriously. Seeing my brother Abhishake in the ad-vanced swimmer batch I too wanted to be there. I worked hard though lost attendance in the deal. I had just 50% atten-

dance in my 12th grade still managed to score above 80% in my board exams,” said Ab-hishiktha.

Having studied biololgy and maths in her higher secondary class, she could have tried an engineering or medical seat but did not do so. Abhishiktha made a wise decision is choos-ing Sports Science at Sri Ram-achandra Medical college. “Sports science underscores the human body’s response physiologically, psychologi-cally, anatomically, and bioki-netically to various kinds of exercise and training,” she said. Prudence in making her college studies sufficiently co-herent and conducive to prac-tise her favourite sport made this lass distinct from the oth-ers. Certainly her role model was none other than Olympian Katie Ledecky of the United States.

“Not only does this science discipline help me avoid dis-tractions but also enhances my

awareness in adopting a par-ticular fitness approach,” she added.

Abhishiktha practices regu-larly at ‘The Stingrays Swim-ming pool and fitness centre’ run by her parents Paul Mani and Sheeja which evidently is a boon to her career growth. Her diet and nutrition supple-ment are said to be monitored and charted every month by Qua Nutrition.

She is a gold medalist at the Junior Nationals and silver medalist at Senior Nationals. At international level, Abhishi-ktha has taken part in World school games and Asian school games. Her immediate goal is to ramp up her endurance and win a medal in the University Nationals to be held this Octo-

ber. She is also a recipient of the Tamil Nadu government’s Chief Minister’s award.

Following 2017 Senior Na-tionals held in Bhopal during her 12th grade, Abhishiktha had to take a break for almost a year. From amidst the high and low tides that she waded throughout her swimming journey, Abhishiktha claims to have learnt to neutralise her emotions after disappointing defeats and start focusing on how to do better in the upcom-ing events.

With Stingrays next door and her sibling being groomed as a swimming coach at NIS Bangalore, this confident and unassuming 19-year-old lass from Nolambur hopes to make India proud one day.

tained by the Greater Chennai Corporation in Mogappair Eri Scheme, is in an absolute state of ne-glect warranting immedi-ate restoration and upkeep. Known as the Estate Poon-ga, this park is located on a lane that branches off from the Church Road in Mogappair East.

The park is used by scores of people living in and around the neighbour-hood for playing badmin-ton and learning karate, especially during week-ends and holidays. How-ever, as you enter the park, it has a rundown look with the compound wall broken on one side on the left end, with absolutely poor fa-cilities for sports enthusi-asts.

The surface of the park is uneven and dusty. One can spot rubble at various places and there is hardly any patch of greenery on the ground or grassland.

“This park itself is lo-cated in an interior but quiet locality without the usual hustle and bustle of the otherwise busy Mogap-pair neighbourhood. May-be that is why the authori-ties are neglecting its up-keep,” said Kulothungan, a local resident, sarcasti-cally.

“People who cannot afford to pay a huge monthly bill to enrol in private badminton acade-mies are the ones who usually come here to enjoy a game in the mornings. But the surface of the ground certainly puts off a person at the first look.

Helmetless drive to cost more

Getting away after pay-ing a paltry fine of Rs 100 for riding without helmet may soon be a thing of past. The traffic police have asked motorists to be prepared to pay anything upto Rs 1,000 for the vio-lation as the revised fines are to be implemented soon across the city.

Rarely does an ap-peal for better civic sense have the de-

sired impact. This has yet again been proved by the scene on 18th Main Road in Anna Nagar.

On a wall near garbage bins in Ward 95 of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion, which falls under Zone 8 of the civic body,

an appeal has been painted urging people to deposit only household waste alone in the bins. "Do not dump chopped branches of trees or construction debris here," the Greater Chennai Corporation has appealed to the locals. Not stopping with it the civic agency further warned that Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras have been in-stalled in the locality to

keep a watch on violators.However, the warning

has gone unheeded if one goes by the scene at the venue where the garbage bins have been placed on the 18th Main Road. On a recent visit Mogappair Mail found a used bed mattress and debris in a sack dumped adjacent to the garbage bins and right in front of the wall bearing the appeal of the Greater

"We got the Greater Chennai Corporation to paint this appeal on the wall as we found that it had

become very common for people in the neighbour-hood to discard construc-tion debris and tree branch-es here. Besides they dump used sofas, mattresses and the like at this spot making it an ideal ground for mos-quito breeding. This appeal

was posted over six months ago and we are sorry to say that it has not had any de-sired effect yet," rued an elderly resident, who, how-ever, preferred to remain anonymous. "I don’t want to get into trouble com-plaining," he said.
