The introduction of battery-operated auto rickshaws for collection of garbage door-to-door in the neighbourhoods of Mogappair East, Mogappair West and Nolambur has eased the workload of conservancy workers hired by the agency that has been engaged by the Greater Chennai Corporation to undertake clean-liness operations.

The battery-operated green coloured auto rickshaws are also a hit among the residents of these localities who find it a welcome change from the overloaded tricycles that were previously used for

garbage collection in the neigh-bourhood.

Initially, these eco-friendly garbage collection auto rick-shaws were introduced by the Greater Chennai Corporation on an experimental basis in its Valasaravakkam and Perungudi zones in April this year. Follow-ing the success of the model, the Ambattur Zone of the Greater Chennai Corporation intro-duced it in parts of Mogappair and Nolambur neighbourhoods some weeks ago. And since then it has in a way become the cy-

nosure of some eyes, or so to say.Conservancy workers, spotted in the

neighbourhood collecting garbage using the battery-operated green auto rick-shaws, said they were happy over the development. “Previously we had to use all our physical power to pedal the tri-cycles and go from house to house asking them to deposit the day’s garbage in it. The women accompanying us would have no choice but follow the tricycle by foot. It was quite a labourious task,” admitted a conservancy worker.

However, now with the auto rickshaws it is only battery power that is used and the conservancy workers don’t feel ex-hausted physically. “Also the vehicle has given us dignity because while pedaling a tricycle we were identified as

garbage cycle man. But now the auto has a sleek look and we also enjoy riding it. We are also able to cover more distance within a short time and that has led to effective clearance of garbage,” he added.

A woman, accompanying him, said, “For me also life has become a lot easier since the introduction of the green auto rickshaw. Now I also get to sit in the front instead of walking all the way behind tricycles. The residents also treat us better these days.”

Traffic signal for pedestriansPeople face difficulty in crossing the Poonamallee

High Road that connects Nerkundram side to Golden George Nagar with bus stops on both sides. As there is no traffic signal a foot over bridge or subway is needed to avoid the heavy traffic on the highway. Se-nior citizens and children are at risk while crossing. One time solution to this problem will be to provide a subway for pedestrians and vehicles to cross. But the need of the hour is a traffic signal for pedestrians.

smart parking system ready for launch

The Greater Chennai Corporation’s smart parking system is ready for launch this month. It will facilitate automated parking of vehicles in 4,375 slots in 80 locations across the city.

In the first phase, motorists visiting areas such as Anna Nagar, T.Nagar, Be-sant Nagar, Nungambakkam and Marina Beach will be able to make bookings for the 4,375 parking spaces using the “GCC Smart Parking” App that can be down-loaded from Google Play Store.

But for Khader Nawaz Khan Road all other parking slots will have a charge of Rs 20 per hour for cars. The parking time will be from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The total number of cameras fixed for monitoring the smart parking system in the first phase is 460, covering the 80 locations.

The parking charge for motorcycles will be Rs 5 per hour. Payment from motorists will be accepted by credit card and debit card.

Smart parking has been readied in Anna Nagar Second Avenue, Third Av-enue, Fourth Avenue Shanthi Colony, Vavin, Jawaharlal Nehru Salai and Padi near Saravana Stores with a charge of Rs 20 per hour. Over 200 attenders wearing red T-shirts and green jacket will assist the motorists in each of the parking locations.

Southern Railway (SR) has announced Suvidha and special fare special trains to clear extra rush of passengers during the Deepavali season.

Train no 82613 MGR Central – Secunderabad will leave MGR Central at 7.30 pm on Oct 25 and reach Secunderabad at 8.25 am the next day. The train comprising an AC tier-II, three AC tier-III and sleeper class coaches will stop at Sullurpetta, Na-yudupetta, Gudur, Nellore, Ongole, Tenali, Guntur, Piduguralla, Miryalaguda and Nalgonda. Advance reservation for the special train has already opened.

Train no 06027 Tiruch-chirappalli – Nagercoil will leave Tiruchchirappalli at 3.30 pm on Oct 26 and reach Nagercoil at 1 am the next day. Pavement taken over by sand, bricks dealer in Anna NagarBy N Rathi Chithra

A section of the pave-ment on the 13th Main Road in Anna Nagar has been allegedly taken over by an individual who deals in building construction material such as river sand, bricks and gravel.

As one proceeds on to the 13th Main Road from the Second Avenue Road [Thirumangalam-Anna Nagar Roundtana Road], on the left hand side of the pavement one can spot sand, bricks and gravel spread out on a section of the space meant for pedes-trians. This location is close to the 13th Main Road-Fourth Avenue Road [Shanthi Colony, in popu-lar parlance] junction.

Locals said that this is a recent development and previously the pavement was free of encroachment. “A few weeks ago an indi-vidual has spread out var-ious building construction

material on the platform and has been sel l ing them,” said a resident of an apartment complex nearby, who, however, wished not to identify herself. “I don’t want to

get into unnecessary trou-ble with the individual. What if he is politically connected? But I can defi-nitely say that this en-croachment of a public space is a hindrance to

those who prefer to tra-verse short distances in the neighbourhood by foot,” she added.

Pedestrians complained that due to the depositing of building construction materials on the pave-ment, they are forced to walk on the road. “This is a road that interconnects two very busy stretches of the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood – i.e. the Second Avenue Road and the Fourth Avenue Road. Both these roads witness dense vehicular traffic al-most through the day. That means that pedestri-ans necessarily have to have their own space to ensure that they are not hit by a passing vehicle. But when there is such en-

croachment on the pave-ment, it forces them to step on the road risking their lives and limbs,” said Singaram, a daily-wager who was seen walking on the stretch.

“What is strange is that while the officials of the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion as well as the Greater Chennai Police land up at building construction sites to crack down on spread-ing out of construction material on the roadside, they don’t seem to show the same zeal when it comes to dealing with someone who is commer-cially exploiting a public space – in this case a pave-ment,” lamented another resident of the area, who preferred anonymity.

on the shooting prowess of US Police Force, we were benefited immensely by the inputs from the Hollywood stars, who were only happy to render all sorts of assis-tance.” On the script which merited a shoot in the US after scouting locations in London, Sydney and Mauritius, Sarathy said it is no statistical pride that the maximum number of shoots happen in the US, armed with the latest tech-nology in guns. “While shooting at two locations, the unit was totally un-aware of an actual shoot happening in the 24th floor of the building.”

Recounting the mur-ders of Indian students mostly from Andhra, Sarathy said he had been

disturbed by the racial abuse the Indians had been subjected to. “Every incident confirmed that the Indians had been pro-voked and shot at without giving them a chance to explain their predicament. “For the uninitiated the incidents may look as routine ones in the hustle and bustle cities of the US. But the truth is, there has been a hatred towards the Indians who are educated and eke out a decent living in US.” In a script line which gave him the licence to shoot at the happening spots in Las Vegas, famous for its night life. Released last Friday, Sarathy is opti-mistic of a pre-Deepavali cracker to rung in the fes-tive mood.
