M41 Merri Creek to MCG Water Main Renewal Project July 2017
Key project dates
July 2017
Edinburgh Gardens, Fitzroy North George Street, Fitzroy
The M41 water main supplies drinking water to over 350,000 residents and businesses in Melbourne’s inner suburbs. It runs from Merri Creek, Northcote to Wellington Parade, East Melbourne.
The existing water main is almost 100 years old and deteriorating. Leaks have created significant community disturbance during emergency repair works.

OTHER WORKS IN THE AREA
Alexandra Parade main drain re-decking project
Melbourne Water is also working in the local area to replace deteriorating parts of roof panels protecting the main drain that runs under the Alexandra Parade median. The drain safely carries stormwater away from local suburbs to avoid extensive flooding during heavy rainfall.
The areas highlighted on the map above show where the work will take place. A number of trees are growing over the drain and may need to be removed for construction works to take place. We will be able to provide further information regarding tree removal once the contractor has been appointed in mid-2017.

Project overview Melbourne Water has worked with our design contractor
John Holland-KBR to develop a preferred option, shown
on the map above. The preferred option takes into
consideration a number of important factors such as social
and environmental impacts, as well as technical
constraints and cost.
Community feedback has also been incorporated in the design
process. We heard from many residents and local community
members about the importance of trees, particularly mature
trees and parkland, and we will avoid tree removal where possible.
We are committed to returning any parkland to original
or improved condition.
In some places, such as Bennett and Falconer Streets, the
preferred option differs from the existing alignment. Some
residents will experience construction disruption although the
existing M41 water main does not currently run through their
street. We apologise in advance for this inconvenience and
we will talk directly to these residents. Residents are also able
to contact us or attend one of our community sessions for
more information.
Next Steps Once Melbourne Water has informed the community about
the preferred option and gathered feedback, the process
to appoint a construction contractor for the detailed design
and construction works will occur. We expect this process
to take place in late 2017.
We will continue to engage with key stakeholders, community
members and local business throughout this process and seek
further feedback. The contractor will also further engage local
people during construction to gain a better understanding
of any needs, issues or concerns about the project.
Replacing the M41 water main is a major construction project.
The water main is 1150mm in diameter and will require
excavation of a large trench so that it can be installed.
While we are committed to retaining all mature trees in
Edinburgh Gardens, some local impacts may include vegetation
and tree removal, increased dust, noise, local road closures and
associated traffic disruption. We apologise in advance for any
disruption caused by these essential works.
