This manual explains how to use the M4099D image scanner.
This manual contains basic instructions for scanner operation, cleaningparts replacement, adjustment and troubleshooting.
Refer to Operator’s Guide for the basic information about the M4099D.
The M4099D is very fast and highly functional image scanner developedfor volume filing, using charge-coupled device (CCD) image sensors.This scanner features duplex scanning and high quality image, processingwith an automatic document feeder (ADF).

Hold both ends and bend thedocuments into an arch. Then holdtightly and straighten them. Thecenter of documents swells and air isintroduced between the documents.

Remove the protective paper from a new cleaning sheet and place it with theadhesive side face down. Then repeat steps through . After cleaning iscomplete, turn the power off.

Wipe the metal roller surfaces(lower transport unit side) whileturning the shaft by hand.
Apply isopropyl alcohol or cleanerF1 to cloth.
Allow to dry.
Open the upper transport unit.

Wipe the transport path with a drycloth or soaked in isopropylalcohol or cleaner F1.

CAUTION
Never close the upper transport unit in thiscondition. Doing so will cause severedamage to the scanner.

Slide the pick roller unit left andremove it toward the upper right.
Turn the lever of the brake rollerupward and pull out the brakeroller upward.
Holding the top of the guide plate,press the guide plate down, andlift it toward you to remove it.

Wipe the discharge brush with adry cloth to remove dust.

Attach the brake roller until it locks.
Put the guide plate in position.
NOTE
Confirm that the guide plate is installedcorrectly. If it is miss connected, it will causepaper jams and noise by touching the hoppertable.

Attach the pick roller unit asshown.
CAUTION
When attaching the pick roller unit, do nothunging down its head.

While holding the ADF sheet guideassembly up, pull the ADF releaselever toward you then gently lowerthe ADF sheet guide assembly.Release the ADF release lever tolock the ADF sheet guideassembly into position.
Close the upper transport unit.
CAUTION
Hold the ADF sheet guide assembly duringthis process to avoid damage to the sensors.

Loosen the two knurled screws atboth ends of the upper sheetguide assembly to open theassembly.
Wipe both surfaces of the glassclean with a dry cloth (ormoistened with isopropyl alcoholor cleaner F1 as necessary).

Wipe the glass clean with a dry cloth(or moistened with isopropyl alcoholor cleaner F1 as necessary).

Consumable counter
This scanner is equipped with an internal counter that can be used to monitor the life ofyour consumable parts. It is recommended that the pick roller unit, brake roller, and padbe replaced every 300,000 sheets or one year when scanning Xerox paper types. Thiscycle will be shorter if scanning treated paper types such as carbonless paper types.
■ Setting the consumable counter
Press MENU when the LCD displays“Ready”. The <<MODE SELECT>>screen appears with SETUP blinking.
Press ENTER twice. The Settingsscreen appears (or Paper LengthCheck).
Press (→) eleven times. TheConsumable Counter screen appears.
Press ENTER . The value of theconsumable counter is displayed in tenthousands of sheets.
Press (↓) or (↑). The valuechanges (001 to 256). Holding down
(↓) or (↑) speeds up the change.The recommended value is 030.

Press CANCEL twice. The LCD returnsto the Ready screen.
■ Resetting the consumable counter
There is another case in which you may reset the consumable counter. If the scannerdetects a consumable life alarm which is displayed when the consumable counterreaches the prescribed value, the LCD indicates an alarm that the consumable may beexpired. In this case, press CANCEL to proceed the next operation (usually, you resetthe counter after replacing the consumable.) The LCD indicates the following message:
Reset Consumable Counter?Yes:Enter No:Cancel
Yes (Enter) : The scanner resets the consumable counter to zero.No (Cancel) : The scanner does not reset the consumable counter. In this case,
the consumable life alarm recurs when the next sheet is fed.
