No action against buildings violating fire safety normsSir, This refers to the recent fire tragedy in a

rooftop pub in a building in Kamala Mills com-pound in Mumbai in which 14 lives were lost. The initial probe has revealed that it could havebeen sparked by a short circuit and spreadbecause of the combustible roof. In effect, firesafety norms had been violated.

In T. Nagar, things are equally bad. Most ofthe high-rise buildings do not have fire safetymechanisms in place. After the Chennai Silksfire incident in Usman Road, the Fire andRescue Department conducted a survey andreported that most of the commercial com-plexes in the neighbourhood had violated firesafety norms. While the fire department doesnot have the power to punish, those who have

the power, unfortunately, do not takeaction. The result is that members of the pub-lic are at great risk while stepping into thesecomplexes.

Not long ago, while hearing a writ petition onlack of fire safety in buildings, the Madras HighCourt directed the Fire Department to put upcaution notices in buildings violating norms. This has not been followed diligently and suchnotices have been displayed only in a couple ofbuildings.

The onus now rests only on theshoppers. Should they patronize shopping ar-eas that are unsafe, overcrowded and offer noescape routes in case of fire? It is a point worthpondering. K. Harihar, T. Nagar.

Post GST, subsidized LPG is dearerSir, This is with reference to the report

regarding the withdrawal of hike in the price ofLPG. It was stated that the order to revise theLPG price by Rs. 4 every month to offset thesubsidy burden was withdrawn in October2017 as it was seen to contrast with thegovernment’s Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojanafor providing free gas connections. Followingthe withdrawal of the order, it was reportedthat the oil companies have not revised theLPG prices with effect from October 2017.

In the same report, it was stated that thethere has been increase in the price of thesubsidized LPG even after October due to

taxation issues and this came to the fore fol-lowing the implementation of the direct benefittransfer scheme (DBT) where the consumersget the subsidy amount directly in their bankaccount.

Before DBT, VAT was charged on the subsi-dized price, and post DBT, GST is charged onthe open market price which is much higherthan the subsidized price.

So, even after the withdrawal of the pricehike of Rs. 4 a month, there has been no respiteto the consumers from the price hike due to theadditional tax levy. V. S. Jayaraman, 31,Motilal Street, T. Nagar
