TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 2

‘Kalidas’ had songs in Tamil and Telugu. Interestingly ithad two compositions of Saint Thyagaraja, a cult figure andicon of Classical Carnatic Music who had lived during theearly 19th century. An anachronism? But, in that period, nobody making movies bothered about such rules of drama-turgy!

(For example, the famed stage and early film star, S. V.Subbaiah Bhagavathar, was noted for his song “Jaya JayaGokula Baala” about Lord Krishna. When he acted as LordRama in a play, he would enter the stage singing this song andwas loudly cheered by the audience! A song about Krishna, who came after many thousand of years, in a play aboutRama? Well, nobody cared! Only Bhagavathar and his fa-mous song mattered! In another play, as Lord Krishna, hecame on the stage dressed in a British-type suit singing hisfamous song! Surely those were the days .....)

Two songs in this movie by Rajalakshmi became famous. One was the emotional outburst of love by the heroine. Shesings, “Manmadha Bhaanamadaa… MaarinilPaayuthadaa…..!” It became popular and many young womensang or hummed it with gleeful giggles and pleasure in theprivacy of their bathroom! Another song highlighted theIndian Freedom Movement and Mahatma Gandhi who wasleading the sacred struggle. His icon was the “charkha”, thehand-operated spinning wheel, and the first line of the songwas “Raattinamam…Gandhi Kai Bhanamaam”!

L. V. Prasad, a latter-day icon of Indian Cinema, multi-lingual filmmaker, studio owner - indeed in Indian movieworld legend - began his life in Bombay at the bottom of theladder as an odd-job man (including cinema house gateman),played a small role in this film and also did many jobs behindthe screen.

Indian Cinema played a significant role in the FreedomMovement in spite of the rigid system of film censorship bythe then British government. Yet filmmakers used smart, subtle methods to introduce the message of the strugglemainly through songs. Indeed the role of Tamil Cinema in theFreedom Movement awaits to this day a full and in-depthstudy.

Unfortunately there are no gramophone records (then com-monly known as “plates”) of the songs of “Kalidas” and noprint of the film has survived . Even its song-book is nottraceable and so, sadly, the names of the technicians and suchdetails remain unknown.

“Kalidas” was the only film to be produced in Tamil in 1931and it created history. A new aural age in cinema had dawnedand the role of film music began to take roots in the hearts, minds and souls of moviegoers.

The sound synchronization (known as “lip-synch” in themovie technical jargon) was far from perfect. Often, whensound was heard from the screen, actors had their mouthstightly shut and, when they moved their lips, no sound washeard. But nobody cared and “Kalidas” proved to be a box-office hit. The mere novelty of the screen exploding intosounds, song and dialogue in their own lingo thrilled people.

Surprisingly many were skeptic about sound. They won-dered how the tiny inanimate bits of mute celluloid couldproduce songs and words! Some felt that men and womenwere hiding behind the screen and were making all thosesounds! Many “Doubting Thomases” thought that it was allsome kind of black magic created by the white man to ensnareand enslave “natives”, brown and black!

Few are aware that, before the main movie stared, a fewgypsy dances rendered by Rajalakshmi, accompanied byappropriate music, would be screened as a curtain-raiser.These dances had absolutely no connection with the story orthe main film. In the early days of sound films in India, suchscenes, colloquially known as ‘items’, were screened. This wasthe impact of the American art form of Vaudeville. ArdeshirIrani, the producer, shot these dance sequences more as anexperiment in sound recording.

It was K. Subramaniam, who had recommended the stageand silent film star T. P. Rajalakshmi for the dances and alsoto play the title role in this historic movie. That was how shemade her debut in talking pictures.
