Chance of returning to work is 50% after 6 months time off
50% of individuals with permanent partial impairments experience another work disability within 3 years of returning to the workplace

Prevention/Rehabilitation ContinuumPrevention/Rehabilitation Continuum
Employing an integrated approach that incorporates a managed system is essential in managing the continuum of prevention, rehabilitation and compensation. It requires transformational leadership and an understanding that the workplace needs to be viewed organically
All stakeholders must be engaged in the development of a holistic approach to all aspects of the continuum
Key elements of the continuum are: Integrated comprehensive disability prevention strategy Primary prevention Primary rehabilitation Secondary rehabilitation

Health Continuum ParadigmHealth Continuum ParadigmThe goal of the paradigm is to keep people free of symptoms and dysfunction. Rehabilitation is an activity designed to return those who stray below the Safe Zone and establish their new parameters of function focusing on abilities. Even while an individual is dysfunctional in some way, they can be promoted and prevented from further dysfunction.

Consensus Based ApproachConsensus Based Approach
Consensus based disability prevention involves the cooperation of all the stakeholders. It is a process that serves as a foundation for management and labour to work together in solving problems at the workplace
It considers the whole person and requires a high level of corporate emotional intelligence
One example is the Consensus Based Disability Management Audit (CBDMA) developed by the National Institute of Disability Management and Research (NIDMAR) located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada (www.nidmar.ca)
M. Shaw, IAPAPresident & CEO
www.iapa.ca 14
Disability prevention programs have been shown to significantly reduce the negative social effects of disabling illness or injury on workers and their families
Workplaces have also found that making every reasonable effort to return workers to the workplace is a sound economic decision
預防傷殘計劃顯著的減低受傷員工及其家人在社會上因傷殘而引起的不良效應
雇主亦體驗到盡力安排受傷工人復工是有經濟
’效益的抉擇

There is a dignity in work, the sense of accomplishment and belonging it brings, its value to the community and to society
A disability prevention program keeps employees connected to the workplace, focuses on abilities, and moves them back into the “Safe Zone” as quickly and effectively as possible
It is the right thing to do!

“The data revealed that the coordinated return to work approach led to a dramatic 47% reduction in the
duration of claims (prevention) in 2003 and a 39% reduction in the costs of claims.”
