ANALYZE: A High School Resume and Cover Letter Before writing your own resume and cover letter, it’s important to look at some real life examples and discover what elements all great resumes and cover letters have. Part I: Resume analysis Review the “Student Resume Checklist” below to review what to look for in a resume.

STUDENT RESUME CHECKLIST

Formatting

❏ Looks like a professional document.

❏ Keep resume to one page in length.

❏ Make sure your information fills the page without looking crowded or condensed.

❏ Emphasize major headings using capital letters, underlining, bold, or defining font style.

❏ Use bullets, bold, italics, underlining, and indenting appropriately.

❏ Proofread your resume to make sure it is free of grammatical errors.

❏ Keep spacing and formatting consistent throughout the document.

❏ List dates consistently throughout the resume.

❏ Use only appropriate font styles (Times, Arial, Verdana, Calibri, etc)

❏ Keep font sizes to 10, 11, or 12 pt. for text and 12, 14, or 16 pt. for headings and name.

Part II: Cover letter analysis Review the “Cover Letter Checklist” below to review what to look for in a cover letter.

STUDENT COVER LETTER CHECKLIST

Formatting & General Information

❏ Keep cover letter to one page in length.

❏ Proofread your cover letter to make sure it is free of grammatical errors.

❏ Write the cover letter in business letter format.

❏ Write in professional business language. Do not use chat speak, texting language, or shorthand.

❏ Use only appropriate fonts (Times, Arial, Verdana, Calibri, etc).

❏ Keep font size to 10, 11, or 12 pt. for text. Font size should be consistent throughout the cover letter.

❏ Single space the letter, but leave blank lines between your contact information, the date, the company’s

contact information, the greeting, each paragraph, and the closing.

❏ Sign your letter.

❏ Print your cover letter on high quality paper, just as you do your resume.

❏ Do NOT use a generic form letter for every job you apply to. Make sure your cover letter is personalized to

each position and company.

❏ Start the cover letter with your physical mailing address.

Contact Information of the Recipient

❏ Include the name of a specific person, with the appropriate prefix if known (Dr., Mrs., Rev., etc).

❏ Include recipient’s job title.

❏ Make certain you have the correct spelling of the person’s name and title.

❏ Include the name of the company.

❏ Include the company’s physical mailing address.

Greeting

❏ Address the letter to a specific person.

❏ If appropriate prefix is known, use it in the greeting (ex. Dear Mr. Parker).

❏ Use a colon at the end of the greeting (:), not a comma.

First Paragraph

❏ Show interest in the company.

❏ Identify the position to which you are applying.

❏ State how you learned about the job opening.

❏ Summarize your strongest qualifications.

Second Paragraph

❏ Use a copy of the job advertisement or description to write this paragraph if possible.

❏ Describe your qualifications in more detail. Include information such as:

❏ Demonstrate that you have knowledge of the company.

❏ Show how your qualifications, experience, and abilities match the needs of the company.

❏ Use specific examples as evidence of your qualifications.

❏ Refer to your enclosed resume.

Part III: Brainstorm your cover letter Before you write a cover letter, you want to take some time to consider some key questions that will drive the message. Answer the following questions below:

1. Determine what you are looking for a. What type of company do you want to work for?

b. What type of position are you looking for?

2. Choose a job opening

a. If you are completing this activity as part of our Create a Career Portfolio project, you should use one of the fictional Job Postings that accompany that project and can skip questions in 3b below.

b. Otherwise, search for job openings that fit your desires i. Some places to start your search: Monster, LinkedIn, Indeed, SimplyHired, Idealist

ii. **NOTE: All of these sites are free to use, but some may require users to sign-up before using them

iii. You can also use local resources for finding job listings in your community

3. Do your research a. Read the job description carefully.

i. What qualities are they looking for in a candidate? What qualifications do you need for their job?

b. Also, look at the company’s website, its Twitter feed, the LinkedIn pages of key members of the company

i. What challenges is the company facing? How could you help to solve them?

ii. What type of culture does the company seem to have? Risk-taking? Conservative?

Part IV: Create your cover letter Now that you have the information you want to include, it’s time to put it into a cover letter.
