TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACKTAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 40

“Pizhaikkum Vazhi” had, besides T. S. Durairaj, T. S. Balaiah, and T.A. Jayalakshmi (the heroine of “Naam Iruvar”) in mainroles, but it was not a success and not many remember the filmor the song today!

Pattammal sang for more AVM films besides “Naam Iruvar”.They were Vethaala Ulagam (1948), Vaazhkai (1949) and“Rama Rajyam” (1948).

“Vethaala Ulagam” was based on a fantasy-play by thefounding father of the Renaissance of Tamil theater, PammalSambandam Mudaliar. It had in major roles T. R. Mahalingam,(Yogam) Mangalam, K. R. Chellam, K. Sarangapani andKulathu Mani. Pattammal sang two melodious songs bothwritten by Mahakavi Subramanian Bharathiyar.

One song was “Thoondir Puzhvinaipol Sudar Vilakkinaippol”which had been popular for years before it was used in this film.It is in this song the following famous lines occur:

Paalum Kasanthathadi Sakhiyey Padukkai NonthathadiKolakili Mozhiuyum Seviyil Kutthal Eduthathadi! The other song was the more popular “Theeratha Vilayattu

Pillai”.The excellent and seemingly effortless singing style of

Pattammal and the bewitching dancing by ‘Baby’ Kamalaelevated the last scene in the film to great aesthetic heights. This scene was hand-tinted frame by frame and in manycinemas it was screened in colour!

(Before the advent of colour in Tamil cinema, some song ordance scenes in the positive print of the film were coloured byhand, frame by frame. The laborious, time-consuming andexpensive process was known as “Hand-tinting”. Murugesanof Newtone Studio was an expert in this process and came tobe known as “Colour” Murugesan! An advocate of Madras rana firm in George Town area for hand-tinting of films in thosedays.)

AV. Meiyappan then dubbed the superhit Hindi film “RamRajya” in Tamil. In an innovative move he added a prelude tothe film containing the popular song sung by Pattammaldescribing the main events of the epic “Ramayanam”,‘?Enakkun Iru Padham Ninaikka’. As she sang, the events inthe epic were shown on screen as ‘shadow play’ (silhouette ),a novelty in cinema of that day. Pattammal sang this song inragas Kedharagowla, Shanmughapriya, Bilahari, Dhanyasi,Mayamalavagowla and Mohanam.

Pattammal also sang in AVM’s “Vaazhkai” (1949) whichintroduced Vyjayanthimala to movies with a bang. The filmwas a major hit of 1949 and Meiyappan remade it in Telugu (as“Jeevitham”) and in Hindi (“Bahaar”). Vyjayanthimala at-tracted national attention and became a multi-lingual starovernight and never looked back thereafter. The talentedBharathanatyam dancer executed a scintillating song anddance number for “Bharatha Samudayam Vaazhvey.” writ-ten years earlier by Bharathiyar and rendered by Pattammal. The music composer was R. Sudarsanam.

Another film of significance but not popular, highlighting theIndian Freedom Struggle, was A. K. Chettiar’s compilationmovie on Mahatma Gandhi. One of the earliest Indian globe-trotters, Chettiar, a Gandhian, traveled to many countriescollecting footage on Gandhi and also shooting some freshscenes. Pattammal sang “Aadu Raattey” for it. Being adocumentary, the film was not popular and did not get theattention it richly deserved.

A forgotten film in which Pattammal sang was “Lavanya”(1951). This film with T. E. Varadan, Kumari Vanaja, Kumari(no longer ‘Baby!’) Kamala, Suryaprabha and PulimoottaiRamasami sank with no trace.

The Gemini Studio boss and Indian movie mogul S. S. Vasaninvited Pattammal to sing for his ‘intellectual film’ “MissMalini” (1947). Based on a story by R. K. Narayan and directedby Kothamangalam Subbu, the film had the noted bilingualstar and ‘oomph’ girl of her day, Pushpavalli, in the title role.(Hindi film star Rekha is her daughter). She plays the role ofa poor woman who is forced to go on stage to keep the home firesburning and look after her sick father. Thanks to a friend (M.S. Sundari Bai ) she is asked to take a singing test by the stagedirector (‘Javert’ Seetharaman in his first film). She sings asong for the audition in pure Classical Carnatic style, “SriSaraswathey Namosthuthey” in Aarabhi raga. Vasan had itsung by Pattammal and paid her a high fee never ever beforegiven to a singer. However Vasan did not use the song in thefilm! Why not? There by hangs a tale, an interesting one at that!

MAYAN GASOn the morning of December 21, I woke up earlier than the crow

on the tree next to my window and, after sending a mock ‘craw, craw’at it, went to the balcony to see if the Eiffel Tower in Paris had shiftedto 424, Second Avenue, Anna Nagar Western Extension whichhouses the potential Ruler Of The World, as allegedly predicted bysome drunken Mayan astrologer many thousands of years ago.

All that the Metrowater guys had dug up months ago and leftuglified with some vanishing cream was still there. The road wasnaked of Eiffel or Burg Dubai. Satisfied that the Mayan lie wasperhaps authored by some of our great globe trotting astrologers, Iwent in and woke up Lakshmi and told her that we are still alive andthe Mayan bloke was a liar. “Let us celebrate it with two cups ofstrong coffee, what?”

“Coffee is a better prophylactic against cancer than tea. So let uschuck the Mayan madness with three cups each”, she agreed.

“The Mayans were probably big boozers and some of thempracticed futurology, but the poor chaps could not predict that, insome years, they would themselves be wiped out. No human can playGod. Anaamika, the animalised girl of New Delhi, would not haveventured on her bus trip had she known that six sex-beasts weregoing to change her entire life pattern. Astrologers would haveprobably told her parents that she would be as famous as ‘MotherIndia’ soon. Well, that she is, now. But now she, I hope, will cause anamendment to the Penal Code that makes life sentence and chemicalcastration the just reward to the wayward human beast. A researchinto the Mayan thought on the subject may earn some the Nobelprize for 2013".
