MOTHER OF GOD COVINGTON, KY
FROM THE PASTORTWENTY YEARS LATER
On Saturday, September 11, our nation remembers the attacks on our country twenty years ago. It was an event that changed everyone’s perception of the reality of our world. Just about ten years before, we had witnessed the end of the Soviet Union, which had been the great enemy of America throughout most of the Twentieth Century. Perhaps a future of peace and freedom and cooperation among nations lay before us. 9/11 showed us that this was not to be the case.
On that terrible day, 265 people died on the four airplanes (including the 19 highjackers), 2,606 in and around the World Trade Center, including many police officers, firemen and other first responders, and 125 at the Pentagon. That day stands as the most deadly terrorist attack in history.
Each of those who died was a son or daughter, husband or wife, father or mother, brother or sister, or friend. They left behind shattered families and shattered communities. In addition to the national tragedy, each was a personal tragedy that impacted many, many lives.
That day also launched America’s wars in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Each of these has cost thousands of lives and billions of dollars. It is somewhat ironic that we ended our involvement in Afghanistan just this past week, with the collapse of that country’s government and army, and the victory of the Taliban. It will take generations for our nation to recover from the effects of those conflicts and to regain the standing that we had before. Once again, these wars were not merely national tragedies, but personal tragedies for those who have returned wounded and impaired, physically and emotionally, and for grieving families who have lost loved ones.
Sadly, we see conflict and havoc throughout our world that is a direct result of the events of 9/11, and the rise of a violent and aggressive fundamentalist Islam. Most of this is actually directed at other believers in Islam.
On this Saturday, we express our grief and sadness at the loss of life, on that day and in the wars and conflicts since then, and the pain of so many left behind. We also must pray for our leaders and the leaders of the world, that they will work together to find effective ways of addressing these ongoing threats. Finally, we pray for the conversion and healing of all human hearts, so that we can recognize one another as brothers and sisters, rise above those things that divide and separate us.
LABOR DAYLabor Day was begun in order to celebrate the many
accomplishments of the Labor Movement in this country. Through collective bargaining, workers were able to secure more just wages, safer working conditions, and other important improvements.
As it has developed over the years, Labor Day still celebrates these things, but also celebrates all labor, all work, whether it is part of a Labor Union or not. We recognize that work is an opportunity to provide for ourselves and our families, to join in the building up of our culture and society, and to express our own creativity and talents.
As Catholics, we note that work is a way in which we join with God as co-creators of this world; taking the raw stuff of creation and using it to make a better world for all.
As we all enjoy this national holiday, let us give thanks to God for the gift of work, and pray that we might do our work in such a way that it gives Him glory and praise.

HOLY LAND PILGRIMAGEUnfortunately, due to the dramatic rise in Delta Variant
cases, in consultation with my tour company, we have decided to cancel the Holy Land Pilgrimage in February. I am very disappointed, as are others who were planning to attend.
Someday we will be beyond this crisis and we will try again.
150TH ANNIVERSARYNext weekend, we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the
Consecration of Mother of God Church. Just six years after the end of the Civil War, the members of Mother of God Parish built the present church, as they had outgrown the previous building.
We have had to close reservations. Sorry if we are not able to accommodate you. The response has been wonderful.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLSSo far, we have tried to keep any inconvenience from
COVID-19 protocols to a minimum. We have removed the water from the Holy Water Fonts,
we continue to not touch one another during the greeting before Mass and at the Sign of Peace, and we are distributing Communion in the hand only. We are also asking that those who are not vaccinated to please wear a mask.

THE NATIVITY OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
The Church celebrates the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8. No one actually knows on what day she was born, so this is a designated birthday, rather than an historical day. The celebration of birthdays is the celebration of the person. We are expressing our gratitude for the individual whose day is being celebrated. Spiritually, no one’s birth is of greater significance than that of Mary, who is the mother of Jesus, and the mother of the Church. From the Cross, Jesus gave His mother to John, the Beloved Disciple, and through Him to each of us.
Remember to take time this Wednesday to show your love for Mary. One of the best things that we can do that day is to say a Rosary in her honor.
ROSH HASHANARosh Hashana is a two-day festival celebrating the
beginning of the New Year for the Jewish people. It also celebrates the creation of Adam and Eve. This year, Rosh Hashana will be celebrated this Tuesday and Wednesday, September 7 and 8. There are a number of traditional foods and celebrations for this feast, but it is most identified with the blowing of the shofar (a ram’s horn) on each day.
We rejoice with our Jewish brothers and sisters as they celebrate this great festival.

HISTORICAL ITEMMother of God Church was granted a “Privileged Altar” in December, 1901. It was consecrated on May 14, 1901, after the sanctuary had been fittingly laid in English cut tile and the Main Altar had been replaced with a marble Mensa; as it is now.
