Professor Mikhail Konstantinovich Zhokhovskii, D. Sc. (Eng.), State Prize Winner, celebrated on November 21, 1964. his 60th birthday and forty years of his continuous service at scientific institutions of the State Commit tee of Standards, Measures and Measuring Instruments of the USSR.

Professor M. K. Zhokhovskiiis the head of the high-pressure department of the VNIIFTRI (All-Union Scientif ic- Research Institute of Physicotechnical and Radiotechnical Measurements) and an outstanding expert in the sphere of high-pressure metrology, measurement technology and instrument-making. He is the author of fifty printed works. His monographs dealing with pressure measurements are widely known in the USSR and abroad.

�9 He has made a considerable contribution to 6ae progress of science by developing the theory of instruments with packtess pistons. On the basis of this theory Mikhail Konstantinovieh and his collaborators have studied and pro- duced unique high-precision instxuments and installations, comprising a series of installations for measuring pressure by means of piston manometers in various ranges up to 25000 kg-wt/cmZ; hydraulic installations for testing and ca l i - brating dynamometers, for checking goods scales, for determining the mechanical characterisucs of materials; h y - draulic scales for large masses, et al.

The Zhokhovskii piston manometers with ranges up to 2000,5000, 10000 and 15000 kg -wt / cm 2 are widely used as reference instruments in the test and scientific-research laboratories of our country.

M. K. Zhokhovskii's work in establishing a thermodynamic scale at high pressures based on the fusing process is of considerable scientific and practical importance. As a result of this work it has become possible to extend the thermodynamic scale up to 25000 k g - w t / c m 2 and to discover several important patterns which made it possible for M. K. Zhokhovskii to work out the thermodynamics of the fusing process under pressure.

On the initiative of M K. Zhokhovskii his department is carrying out comprehensive research on the properties of.substances under high pressures, which includes the investigation of the fusing process and of the viscosity and compressibility of liquids, evaluation of the elasticity con- stant of materials, investigation of polymorphic transitions, et al. The instruments developed for this purpose and the perfectly assimilated m e - thods have led to high precision in measurements and provided our own data on the parameters of substances at pressures.

Professor M K Zhokhovskii is actively engaged in training metro- logical experts, he renders constant assistance to industrial and scientific organizations with respect to problems related to measurements at

h igh pressures.

M. K. Zhokhovskii 's scientific activity is combined with important social work. He is a member of the Ex- perts Council of the State Committee of Standards, Measures and Measuring Instruments of the USSR, and of the Scientific Councils of the VNIIFTRI, VNIIGK (All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of the StateCommit teeofS~an- dards, Measures and Measuring Instruments) and of the Stankin Institute. On various occasions he has been elected Deputy of the district Soviet.

In 1955 Mildaail Konstantinovich joined the staff of the journal "Izmeri te l 'naya tekhnika." and he takes a very active part in its production.
