DIVOT FIXERLet's see what punish-

ment the greens must take.20,000 rounds of golf

means 20,000 shots to eachgreen.

If 10% hit the greensit would mean 2,000 holesper green each year.

Repairing these holesan hour later or next dayis useless. The damagedturf must be repaired atonce to avoid a hole andbrown spot.

Make your own test. Justtry to repair an old ballmark. Then a new one.

Salt Lake City commission approves by4 to 1 vote, over objection of mayor, J.Bracken Lee, to complete Mountain Dellmuny course . . . About 500 citizens at-tended one of biggest, liveliest sessionsever held in the commission's chambersto push for new course completion . . .Sale of Forest Dale, old muny course, was expected to pay for 18 at MountainDell and 9 at Rose Park ... Hack Miller,Salt Lake Desert News sports editor, com-menting on Mountain Dell case said, "Themayor will learn that no other departmentof city government is so exacting in itsbookkeeping and auditing as the city's golfcourses whose figures are matter of de-tailed public records."

Par 3 course building boom grows . . .Some of these popular nurseries are inpublic parks . . . Looks to us as thoughthe design of most of them has been espe-cially mindful of player's safety . . . De-sign and construction of these courses pre-sent problems of minimizing compactionfrom heavy traffic . . . Another feature ofgolf's building program are number ofcourses adjacent to airports - Sterling,Colo., Fairmount CC in Chatham County,N. J., Santa Maria, Calif., and Santa Bar-bara, Calif., are among the airport golfcourse municipal and private projects.

The course and motel and the courseand real estate development tieups are ac-counting for a large percentage of newcourse projects ... Some amazing examplesof what course construction, on land ab-solutely not worth a damn for almost anyother purpose, has done to establish attrac-tive residential character and high value ofadjacent property . . . Bad feature of thisis that the courses will be heavily bur-dened by taxes on values that the coursescreate. '

North Hills GC building two 18's to de-sign of Robert Trent Jones at Manhasset,N.Y., because high taxes forced it to sell itsproperty at Douglaston which will be va-cated by club at end of year ... Douglas-ton property sale financed North Hill's new$2% million plant . . . Cedarbrook CC(Philadelphia dist.) to build $1% millioncourse and clubhouse on 210 acres nearBlue Bell, Montgomery County, Pa., withmoney from sale of its 150-acre presentclub site where a $50 million apartment, hotel and shopping center will be built.. . . Sale was delayed by members' dis-agreement over ownership of club . . .
