And just like that our summer programs here are wrapping up.
VBS, the Mission Trip, and Confirmation Camp are in the rearview
mirror. None of our summer programming would be possible without
volunteers. The Volunteers are what makes the programs possible.
From VBS to F5 nothing is possible without volunteers who are will-
ing to invest their time in youth.
I write this newsletter article in my office at 3:00 on the Friday that VBS concluded.
What a week it has been. We had 60 participants. Each and every one of them enjoyed
VBS. Again it is the volunteers who make this possible. Youth who spent days earlier in
the summer making decorations to getting to church before 9am to volunteer when they
could have been sleeping. Adults who lead stations or take groups around, and all those
who help behind the scenes and in the preparations. I would like to thank Miranda An-
drews, Allison Bobek, Mary Brauer, Janet Carrol, Mia Christian, Devin Galeher, Anna-
Beth Glowczynski, Kris Glowczynski, Fred Grabenhofer, Sharon Grabenhofer, John
Grabenhofer, Abby Grabenhofer, Caity Grabenhofer, Aiden Grabenhofer, Andrew

Confirmation starts up at the end of August we will have a parent meeting for confir-
mation of August 23:
Parents of students entering 6th, 7th, or 8th Grades 6:30pm-7:30pm
Parents of students entering 9th Grade 7:30pm-8:30pm
If you are unable to attend the parent meeting please let myself or Pastor John know.
Classes will start August 30th and will be from 6:30-8:00 on Wednesday nights.

Shepherd of the Hill Lutheran Church Council Retreat
Saturday, July 22, 2017 The retreat began at 9:02.
Pastor Pedersen introduced Pastor Paul Carlson, retired pastor of New Life Lutheran Church, Bolingbrook, Illi-
nois. Pastor Carlson is presently serving as interim pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Joliet, Illinois.
Pastor Carlson shared a congregational emphasis initiated by the New Life Council in 2015. The project was
called “Christ in Motion: Telling the Stories, Celebrating the Gifts.” A handout provided by Pastor Carlson
stated, “At the start of the year, all New Lifers were encouraged to share faith stories of how God is using their
God given gifts to be the Christ’s hands and feet beyond the wall of New Life.” More than 40 individuals
shared personal stories of how Christ has moved (and is moving) in their lives. These stories were also vide-
otaped and can be found on the New Life website.
Council is considering a similar program for Lent of 2018.

Saturday, July 22, 2017 The meeting was called to order by President Steve Kirk at 10:45.
Present: Dave Helfert, Steve Kirk, Pastor Jon Pedersen, Phil Sleezer, Nell Pieper, Tom Gustafson, Rick
McManis, Ken Bobek and Amber Gayhart.
Absent: Dennis Wellsandt.
Council members shared personal “highs and lows” and prayers.
Minutes of the June 20 meeting were approved prior to the meeting via email.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Dennis Wellsandt was not in attendance but had prepared a monthly financial
report for Council. Wellsandt’s report showed a rather large deficit for the month of June. In an Executive
Committee phone conference prior to the 6/22/17 Council meeting, Wellsandt explained that this deficit was
largely the result of a “three pay period” month (rather than the usual two) and the payout from the Narthex
fund ($5,596.90).
Pastor’s Report (Highlights):
On August 8, Pastor Pedersen will be participating in a training session for pastors who are visiting the church
councils of Northern Illinois Synod (Eastern Conference) congregations.
The last Wednesday night service will be on August 16. Attendance at the Wednesday services has been good
… averaging 34. Saturday night services will resume on August 26.
Confirmation classes begin on August 30. Heidi Habas and Scott Likins will teach 6th grade.
Shepherd of the Hill will participate in the Dellwood Block Party, “Back to School, Back to Church.”
Worship services on September 17 will include an emphasis on the Tanzania Nursing School project. To sup-
port this project, Amber Gayhart proposed a “color run” for early October. On a motion from Rick McManis
(2nd by Nell Pieper), the proposed “color run” was approved.

To support the Dellwood Block Party, Council approved financial support up to $500.00 (motion by Dave
Helfert, 2nd by Rick McManis).
Pastor Pedersen noted that the Endowment Committee is now involved in the promotion of the Endowment
Fund. They are working on a brochure that is in its final stages of development. Other promotions are also
being planned
Youth Minister’s Report:
Council received the Youth Ministry Coordinator’s report from Mike Markwell. It included a schedule of ac-
tivities through early November.
In his report, Markwell requested approval for a youth fundraiser. A proposed garage sale (August 19 and 20)
would sell items donated by Marge Otis and her son Dan. Items would come from the sale of their home and
the sale would be held in the church parking lot. A donation “off the top” will be made to the Lockport Re-
source Center. The rest of the proceeds will go to the youth trips for 2018.
On a motion by Tom Gustafson (2nd by Dave Helfert) the fundraiser was approved.
Ministry Team Reports:
Communications (Tom Gustafson): No recommendations to Council.
Evangelism/Fellowship and Caring (Amber Gayhart/Rick McManis) with
Learning and Youth: (Amber Gayhart/Rick McManis): The movie Monsters Inc. will be shown on Wednes-
day, July 26. The Incredibles will be shown after the Saturday night service on August 26.
Stewardship (Pastor Pedersen): No recommendations to Council.
Preschool (Nell Pieper): No recommendations to Council.
Property (Phil Sleezer): All three lawn mowers are now “up and running.”
A recent visit by the Fire Inspector noted that there were some exit signs not working properly (not lit as re-
quired). This problem has been rectified.
Worship (Pastor Pedersen): No recommendations to Council.
Congregational Ministry Teams:
Finance/Audit (Dennis Wellsandt): No recommendations to Council.
Memorial Gifts (Nell Pieper): No recommendations to Council.
Personnel (Ken Bobek): No recommendations to Council.
Nominations (Dave Helfert): No recommendations to Council.

Old Business:
Copies of By-Laws and Constitution: The necessary updating has been completed, but copies have yet to be
made available.
Development of new SOTH Mission Statement (Pastor Pedersen and Amber Gayhart): A presentation by
Amber Gayhart and Pastor Pedersen focused on the difference between mission and vision statements. Sev-
eral examples of each were presented, most of them from Lutheran churches in our area. Council is not sure
if our vision and mission statements need to be revised, but we will look at each. A decision was made to
look at our mission statement more closely at our next meeting.
HVAC/Plumbing Update: President Kirk contacted Scott Likens and found that our project is not yet on the
schedule of the 20/10 Engineering Group. We were assured that we were
“in the cue” but still do not know when the assessment will take place.
New Business:
Support for Tom Redig: After receiving his Masters of Divinity Degree from Olivet Nazarene University,
Tom must still attend a year at a Lutheran seminary plus a year of internship before he can be ordained as a
Lutheran Pastor. Council wishes to support Tom in this process. A motion by Rick McManis (2nd by Dave
Helfert) proposed that $1,000 be given to Tom to help pay his expenses in his first semester of the 2017-1018
school year. This amount will be taken from the “Supply Pastor” line item in the budget. (Tom has preached
several times without any compensation.)
Mike Markwell’s Benefit Package for 2018. There were a number of issues involved here. Council wants to
provide a fair salary/benefit package to Mike. In addition, such a package should be competitive enough to
attract strong candidates when the time comes when Mike leaves Shepherd of the Hill. It was decided that it
would be best to turn this issue over to the Personnel Committee.
Cost Analysis for HVAC Charges to Outside Church Users: How much does it cost to run our air condition-
er? When renting out the building to outside users, doesn’t this need to be taken into account? Dave Helfert
agreed to take the lead in figuring out the cost factor.
September Council Meeting: There will be no August Council meeting. The September meeting will be on
Tuesday, September 19 at 6:30 PM.
Phil Sleezer made a motion for adjournment (2nd by Rick McManis). The meeting was adjourned at 1:42 and
was closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

Sunday school’s origins
Sunday school began in England as early as 1751. Better
known is Robert Raikes’ work in Gloucester 30 years later.
Concerned about poor children who worked in factories six
days a week and often turned to crime, he offered classes on
the only day kids were free. Soon various organizations offered
a loose network of such Sunday schools, which taught basic
reading and writing, using the Bible as a text.
Ten years later, Samuel Slater started the first U.S. Sunday
school in his Rhode Island textile mills. By the mid-1800s,
Sunday school attendance was an almost-universal childhood
experience. As society became more secular and public educa-
tion was mandated by the 1870s, Sunday schools focused on
spiritual practices: prayers, hymns, catechism knowledge and
Scripture memorization.
Well into the 20th century, Sunday school served as the
church’s main outreach tool. Many adults fondly remember
their teachers and lessons, and Sunday school continues to play
a significant part in faith development.

But what about here?
At age 4, Anna was starting to make sense of prayer.
Her parents had been praying with her since birth, but
now her developing cognitive and language skills
caused her to really ponder what prayer meant for
her.
One night, after tucking her into bed and leaving the
room, Anna’s dad heard her voice. He paused outside
the door to see if she needed something. But she was
speaking to her heavenly Father: “Dear God,” Anna
prayed, “when is the best time for me to talk to you? I
mean, Mama and Daddy say I can pray anytime, and I
know you’re always listening. But when will you be
listening especially hard in Minneapolis?”
