TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 74As the film ‘Annai’ was a lachrymose melodrama, Meiyappan

rightly felt that it needed relief by way of comedy. J. P. ChandraBabu came on board in a comedy subplot. A song by him(composer, R. Sudarsanam), ‘Buddhi Ulla Manidhar EllaamVetri Kaanbadhillai’ became a hit.

Music has always been an important element in the AVMmovies and ‘Annai’ was no exception.

‘Annai’, a solid hit, attracted female moviegoers with itspathos and emotional human drama and won the Governmentof India’s Certificate of Merit for 1962. Bhanumathi won theBest Actress Award of the prestigious Madras Film Fans’Association.

Meiyappan remade ‘Annai’ in Hindi as ‘Ladla’(1966). BalrajSahni, who saw the Tamil film, suggested that Bhanumathishould play the same role in the Hindi version too but for somereasons it was not possible. Nirupa Roy played the rich sister’srole and Balraj Sahni was the poor, sick man. However ‘Ladla’did not meet as much success as the Tamil version did .Manycritics pointed out that Bhanumathi should have played thelead role in Hindi too.

(Bhanumathi, a good friend of this writer, told him that manycritics and friends of hers and even some moviegoers told herthat the title of the film should have been ‘Dalda’, a well-knownbrand name of the popular hydrogenated oil!)

Meiyappan introduced a major creative talent in 1962 toIndian cinema who would make a mark as successful multi-lingual filmmaker. It was A. C. Thirulokachandar. He directedhis first film for Meiyappan, ‘Veera Thirumagan’ (1962).

A. C. Thirulokachandar hailed from a well-placed respect-able family of Madras and, after taking his M. A. degree, hechose cinema as his career. A voracious reader with a flair forcreative arts, he worked as Assistant |Director with reputedfilmmakers like R. Padmanabhan, K. Ramnoth and then joinedJoseph Thaliath Jr, who had his own reputed company with itsown studio ‘Citadel’. With his interest in literature, West andEast, Thirulokachandar worked on screen stories, and one wasan adaptation of the famous Alexandre Dumas’s French clas-sic novel and successful movie, ‘The Three Musketeers’. HisTamil adaptation was filmed as ‘Vijayapuri Veeran’ (1960) byJoseph Thaliath Jr, with new faces and it became a box-officehit. Many of the newcomers who acted in it went on to havesuccessful careers in Tamil cinema. And its screenwriter too.

Soon he joined AVM Studios and wrote the screen story for‘Paarthaal Pasi Theerum’ (1962), a successful Bhim Singh filmmade at AVM Studios starring top stars Sivaji Ganesan,Gemini Ganesh, K. Savithri, and B. Saroja Devi. Then came hisbreak as Director in 1962 thanks to Meiyappan.

‘Veera Thirumagan’ was a costume cloak and dagger film ofkings, queens, palace intrigues, greed, revenge, retribution, romance and all. Interestingly narrated by the new Director, the film had the same hero of ‘Vijayapuri Veeran’, a lithe andagile dancer Anandan, and also some others from the same filmin supporting roles. The up and coming screen villain andcharacter actor S. A. Asokan played a major role in it. Meiyappanintroduced a pretty teenaged heroine Kumari Sachhu in thismovie. As ‘Baby’ Saraswathi, she had been a popular childactress. Others in the cast included Pandari Bai, E. V. Saroja,T. S. Muthaiah and S. V. Ramadas. The film had melodiousmusic composed by Sudarsanam and some songs becamepopular.

‘Veera Thirumagan’ fared well and Thirulokachandar madean impact as a filmmaker of much promise which he fulfilledsoon in ample measure. The film was dubbed in Telugu as ‘PrajaSakthi’ (1962).

Thirulokachandar (A. C. T as he is known to his friends)climbed a few rungs up the ladder of fame and success with‘Naanum Oru Penn’(1963). The film had a significant theme ofsocial relevance, significance and importance in Indian societyto this day in the new century and millennium - a virtual hatredfor dark-skinned woman, a problem of sheer color prejudice inHindu society

A dark-skinned woman has always found it difficult to get ahusband and, even after marriage, the in-laws looked down onher. Even dark- skinned men are eager to acquire fair-skinnedwives! That’s India that is Bharat! Jai Hind!

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M. A. SADANAND

Any fool who can go to a petty shop in Mumbai and, with aconspiratorial wink like Casca, ask “Got sticks?” and , if the replyis a nod, orders half a dozen, is India’s nouve explosive democrat whocan cause in good Home Minister Chidambaram duodenal ulcerwhen the sticks send to eternal rest and effect anatomical changesin hundreds of innocent persons.

This soft spoken, high profile Central Minister, with a plebianwardrobe of the tiller and the best legal brain in the government, can’t be made a punch bag every time a smelly traitor is outskunkedby the putrid faeces wrapped in gold foil. It is an economic truismthat money is at the root of all evil, including Mumbai and othermetropolitan blasts.

Some wise man said “Empty drums rattle most”. The Mumbaidetonators can’t even rattle because of atrophied hands and vacu-ous brains. Following their canine instincts, they jump at a chanceand move on, armed with gelatin sticks so plentiful in Casca’sshacks.

Even the mud balls thrown by the opposition do not stainChidambaram’s white shirt. Purity needs no further proof!
