LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir - A tree which got uprooted during the rains on June 9 inside Panagal Park and is supportedby the compound wall is overhanging the walker’s path. It is blocking the path and forcingwalkers to bend their head to avoid it while walking. It is likely to fall any time and poses a gravedanger to unwary walkers. I appeal to the authorities to cut and remove the tree immediatelyto avoid any untoward incident. – V. Shankara Narayanan, West Mambalam.

Sir, I am resident of Vivekanandapuram 1st Street, WestMambalam. Chennai Corporation workers do not clear the gar-bage regularly from our street. We have complained to theofficials but no action has been taken to regularize the garbagecollection. Some of the bins are old and broken and are often foundto be overflowing. The bins often go missing and the residents areforced to dump the garbage on the road. This is unhygienic andcauses problems to the nearby residents due to the overwhelmingstench and mosquito problems. The recent rains have added to thewoes. I request Chennai Corporation officials to take appropriateaction to clear the garbage daily. – Anirudh Srinivas,Vivekanandapuram 1st Street, West Mambalam

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 5G. Ramanathan began to scale the fame tree during the early

1940s and the film which firmly established him as a successfulmusic composer and tunesmith was the M.K. ThyagarajaBhagavathar starrer ‘Sivakavi’ (1943).

Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, was then at the zenith of his fameand fortune, and the film narrated the story of the well-knownTamil scholar and poet Poyyamozhi Pulavar. The film, pro-duced by S. M. Sriramulu Naidu under his then popularPakshiraja banner, was at first directed by the now sadlyneglected iconic personality of Indian Cinema, Raja Sandow.Due to misunderstandings with Naidu, Raja Sandow was easedout and the producer himself took over the direction of themovie.

Like in any MKT movie, music reigned supreme. PapanasamSivan wrote the lyrics while G. Ramanathantook care of thecomposition and orchestration. Elangovan, the first star writerof Tamil Cinema, wrote the script. During those days,Bhagavathar insisted that the producers pay advance toPapanasam Sivan and Elangovan before they engaged him fora movie.

T. R.Rajakumari, the first Dream Girl of South Indian Cin-ema, played a supporting role as a court dancer who falls for thepoet hero. The song and dance number featuring Bhagavatharand Rajakumari, and beautifully filmed by Raja Sandow,‘Kavalayai theerpadhu…’ (Raga Naatakurinji), rightly earnedits place in the galaxy of immortal movie melodies of southIndia.

Another songwhich attained immortality was a duet byBhagavathar and Jayalakshmi, ‘Vadanamey chandrabimbamo…’ (Raga Sindhu Bhairavi). At firstPapanasam Sivanwrote the first line as ‘Mugham (face) adhu chandrabimbamo’and Ramanathan composed the tune. After the songwas recorded by MKT and its positive print projected on thescreen, all, including Sivanand Ramanathan were stunnedwhen the first line sounded like ‘Muhammadhu chandrabimbamo…!’

Hurriedly, Papanasam Sivan rewrote the line as‘Vadanamey…’ and the song was freshly recorded. In thosedays, there were no tape recording facilities and songs wererecorded on a sound negativewhich had to be developed andprintedand then projected on screen to check for impact anderrors, if any. Everyone would eagerly wait until it came fromthe lab.

Another song composed by Ramanathan which Bhagavatharsang was ‘Manam kaninthey…’ (Raga Rathipathipriya) tobring a dead horse alive. During this period, M. M. DhandapaniDesikar was recording a song privately in the same raga andrequested Bhagavathar not to bring out the gramophonerecord of the film song. Bhagavathar in a gracious gesture didnot record the song as a gramophone disc. That song by Desikarwas ‘Jagajanani…’ which became a super hit. That was MKT.

Jayalakshmi, musician-painter S. Rajam’s sister, playedthe heroine and Rajam went along to Coimbatore as chaper-one. To keep him busy, he was cast as a handsome Brahmin(Lord Muruga in disguise) whose cameo performance can stillbe watched with interest. Jaya was then married and thefamily insisted on Rajam tagging along.

Many other songs rendered by Bhagavathar also becamehits. Those include ‘Soppana vaazhvil magizhndu…’ (RagaBhuvanaghandhari) and ‘Vallalai paadumvaayaal…’ (RagaSenjuritti).

‘Sivakavi’ was a grand success and ran for prolonged periodseven in non-Tamil speaking areas in the Madras Presidency. Those were the days when linguistic chauvinism had not yetreared its ugly head and people watched other language moviesfor the thematic content and particularly melodious music.

A good part of the credit for the thumping success of the filmshould go to the cult figure Papanasam Sivan who wrote thelyrics and Ramanathan who composed the tunes. On oneoccasion when somebody raised the question whetherPapanasam Sivan wrote the lyrics and composed the songs,Ramanathan said emphatically, ‘I composed every tune inSivakavi! ‘

By now, Papanasam Sivan and Ramanathan had become ateam, with Sivan writing the lyrics and suggesting the tune, andRamanathan would compose the song and the orchestrationand then record the song.

The successful innings of Ramanathan had begun with thisfilm and he was well on the way to become a Tamil movie musiccharmer himself!
