As we fight as we bury our dead as we reform our squadrons for new battles we think of two cities-Berlin and Tokio In the first World War 20 million men women and children died Cities fell in ruins nations were decimated and empires crashed But Berlin stood unscathed and Kaiser Wilhelm died in bed Even as he passed a second German middot madman was plotting another world war in Berlin From that city went forth the goose-stepping legions who destroyed Rotterdam in three hours and Warsaw in a week They snuffed out the lights of Prague Belgrade and Athens they pounded London and Stalingrad mercilessly

Cheered by four million residents of Berlin Hitler boastshyed that the swastika on his chancellery would glow for a thousand years and that not one stone would be chipped from the Brandenburger Gate What do you say to that men of America Shall sentimental fools preserve Berlin this time The Russians and the English will have something to say about that-and so will you

But do not forget that other city-Tokio There a beshyspectacled monkey-god lives in his sacred palace In Tokio the Ginza is bright with stolen goods In Tokio the proud architects of a new culture met to plot the infamy of Pearl Harbor From Tokio they sallied forth to lay a hundred Chinese cities in ashes to rape and pillage Singapore Surashybaya and Manila And the people of Tokio shouted Banzai Nippon which means a thousand years of life to Japan

The new Engineers 1118th Group by name are taking to this amphibious training like ducks take to water-shy

For awhile well admit we didnt lltmow if we were transferred to the Navy or had been sent here to instruct the CBs but we soon found out when they hit us with a training program the other week

Like the fightiong engineers we are we simply gritted our teeth and took one big bite last week It was almost too big to swallow So next week they are going to iive us a bigger dose But we are fighting engineers and we are anxiously awaihng the arshyrival of the advanced course

Some of us are going to schools and others are breaking our backs Some of us are learning to swim and-well I guess therell always be a rock in the crowd That rock berng me

What the future holds we are not quite sure-but take it from me those higher-ups know whats good for us Of course all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so we do get some time off-passes in the Army-liberty in the Navy

Many of the fellows have taken to fishing cm the Island and others (goldbricks) find the beaches an ideal spot to let Old Sol beat down on their frail bodies

All of the Battalions assigned to the 1118th Engineer Group are unshydergoing the same treatment here They are all Combat Engineers eager formiddotwhat is to come

nearly 11 years a member of the Regular Navy has been commisshysioned and assigned to duty as a communications watch officer at the USNATB headquarters in the Burston BOQ He is also assisting the Seventh Beach Battalion in training the men in communicashytions work temporarily

Ensign Fowles prior to his comshymission was chief radioman and helped organize the communicashytion setup for this Base being among the first contingent to arshyrive last January He came from the fleet tug USS Tuscarora where he served as chief raidoshyman

The new ensign has seen much of the world during his tour of duty He enlisted in Asheville N C received his boot training at Norfolk Va served on several

bull destroyers and for nearly three years on a supply ship in Asiati~ waters

He helped in the commissioning of a sub tender and then went to the USS Tuscarora fleet tug where he made chief radioman and served aboard until being asshysigned to duty here

Ensign Fowles home is in Tryon ~N C He attended Asheville Farm School and was prominent in sports which he carried on in the Navy playing football and baseball on the West Coast and with fleet teams in the Asiatic area His wife and two children are now located in Smiddotan Diego while he is in service

Ihe USNATB baseball team and a club from the 1118th Engineer Combat Group will meet Sunday in a return game at Jaycee Field at 1430 In their previous clash on Navy Day the Engineers emerged victorious 5 to 3 before a record attendance

Otis Printz of the M and R star pitcher of the Navy team will toe the mound for the USNATB team In their last contest Printz logshyged 14 strikeouts against the Enshygineers but poor support turned the tide against him

The Engineers are awaiting game time to announce their twirlshyer who they promise will provide some real competition for Printz the Navys favorite moundsman

The USNATB boxing champions of the various weight classes will be decided this month with the promotion of a tournament at the Camp No 2 ring it was announced by Lt (jg) W Dwight Hickerson Recreation Officer The title winshyners will comprise a team represhysenting the Base for inter-service competition

Preliminary bouts will be conshyducted 25 and 26 November for weights On the following night the finals will be run off There will be six weight classes starting with 135 pounds and allowing a 10 pound leeway for all planning to enter five pounds either way of the class weight

The elimination bouts will be of three rounds and the title frays will be five rounds Several Scouts and Raiders former amateur stars have signified their intentions of competing among whom are Buchshyanan and Bennett Golden Gloves finalists

USNATB athletics took a proshygressive stride with the announceshyment by Lt (jg) W Dwight Hick~ erson Recreational Officer that William Wess Ratterree CSp has been assigned from the Scouts and Raiders to the Recreation Office to help promote athletic activities among the men Chief Ratterree was player-coach of the USNATB baseball team which had such a successful diamond season

Arrangements for a boxing tournament at the S and R ring with all activities having represhysentatives and the formation of a basketball team representative of the Base are already under way The boxing event will take place within a few weeks and the first basketball game will be held about the first of the month

Ratterree whose home is in Prescott Ariz formerly taught inshydustrial arts and coached athletics for nine years at Prescott High His teams were very successful in all sports

He is a former professional baseshyball star having played with the Eastern Shore and Piedmont leashygues for five years During his college career at Colorado State College he starred 9n the football baseball and basketball teams and also did some boxing

The purpose of these singing groups is to furnish music for services They will also combine to sing at the camp shows to be given in the recreation hall when it is completed

Lt Comdr Wright Returns to USNATB With New Unit Fomerly With Fifth Bn

Lt Comdr Stuyvesant B Wright USNR has returned to the U S Naval Amphibious Training Base Fort Pierce where he ha undertaken the training of th Eighth Beach Battalion He foi merly was in command of the Fiftl Beach Battalion which trained her early last Summer and is wel known to many of the officers an men of this Base

The new Battalion wears the in signia of the Eight Ball on thei helmets and are already settlec with training schedule well undemiddot way Lt Robert W Greensladf USNR who served as Communi cations Officer in the Fifth Bat talion is now the Executive Offi cer to Lt Comdr Wright

Two other officers with the new unit and who formerly were here with the Fifth are Ensign Richard Croslin Platoon Commander and First Lieutenant and Ensign James E Weer Company Commander

As we fight as we bury our dead as we reform our squadrons for new battles we think of two cities-Berlin and Tokio In the first World War 20 million men women and children died Cities fell in ruins nations were decimated and empires crashed But Berlin stood unscathed and Kaiser Wilhelm died in bed Even as he passed a second German middot madman was plotting another world war in Berlin From that city went forth the goose-stepping legions who destroyed Rotterdam in three hours and Warsaw in a week They snuffed out the lights of Prague Belgrade and Athens they pounded London and Stalingrad mercilessly

Cheered by four million residents of Berlin Hitler boastshyed that the swastika on his chancellery would glow for a thousand years and that not one stone would be chipped from the Brandenburger Gate What do you say to that men of America Shall sentimental fools preserve Berlin this time The Russians and the English will have something to say about that-and so will you

But do not forget that other city-Tokio There a beshyspectacled monkey-god lives in his sacred palace In Tokio the Ginza is bright with stolen goods In Tokio the proud architects of a new culture met to plot the infamy of Pearl Harbor From Tokio they sallied forth to lay a hundred Chinese cities in ashes to rape and pillage Singapore Surashybaya and Manila And the people of Tokio shouted Banzai Nippon which means a thousand years of life to Japan

A thousand years for Tokio The clock ticks The sand trickles The bragging toasts are proposed and drunk Berlin stands Tokio stands And so did Sodom and so did Gomorrah But on a wall the flaming letters read Mene mene tekel upharsin

Germans and Japanese it will not be a thousand years You are going to get it sooner than that Tokio and Berlin are going to get such punishment that the next leader who cries War War in those towns will be stoned by a mob and choke in his own plood

Another in the series of outings given by Mrs Dorothy B Blanding at her home Im-Mo-Ko-Lee for enlisted personnel of the USNATB was held Sunday afternoon
