Besides acting, Nagaiah composed melodious music in‘Sumangali’ and many of its songs not only became hits in spiteof the failure of the film but, to this day, they are rememberedand hummed the by old timers and film music buffs.

The song ‘Balaa& pasupu kunkumaaa’ had powerful lyricsespousing the birthright of women to have the ‘kunkum’ markon the forehead. The song fights for women’s rights franklystating that society, tradition, rules, orthodoxy and all werecreated by man to keep women in bondage. These lyrics wereconsidered bold sixty odd years ago when the issue of theremarriage of widows was hotly discussed in Hindu society andthe right to remarry had been denied to the unfortunate widow.

In this film the heroine is married off as a child and loses herboy husband almost immediately thereafter. She is so youngthat she does not even the remember her marriage! When, after growing up, she wants to marry a man she loves she isreminded, to her utter shock, that she is, in fact, a widow. Thissong was written by the brilliant scholar and lyricist SamudralaRaghavacharya at the request BN and Nagaiah. Both hadreformist views and attitudes far ahead of the times. Themelody enhanced its appeal and the song became an instanthit not only in the Telugu-speaking districts but also elsewherein the Madras Presidency.

Many other songs too in the film like ‘Aaada brathukemathuram’ also became popular. Interestingly Nagaiah too, like many other film music composers of the period, adaptedthe popular tunes of Hindi films. Even in films for which thelegendary Papanasam Sivan was the composer, they adaptedHindi film tunes without bothering about the laws of copyright.

Undaunted by the financial failure of ‘Sumangali’, BN imme-diately launched his next film ‘Devatha’ (1941). Indeed BN tooka daring issue as its basic theme, pre-marital sex and unwedmotherhood- subjects which few filmmakers would have daredeven to think of sixty years ago. BN brought back Nagaiah ashero and the film was a major hit all over South India even inareas of Kerala of today where nobody knew Telugu. Nagaiahplayed a ‘London-returned Barrister and he also composed themusic as before. Many songs of this film became popular, like‘Mogavaareeni’, “Ennalundina’, ‘Raave bangaru papaa’, ‘Adigoandhiyala’ and ‘Lokamantha lobulaa’.

The last mentioned song became a super hit and was sungfor many years afterwards by beggars seeking alms andmoney in running trains and other places in the Telugu-speaking districts of the Presidency. Most of the songs are stillremembered by old-timers even after seventy long years.

In 1945 BN made another film ‘Swargaseema’ which createdhistory in many ways. BN had been greatly impressed by aHollywood film of 1941’Blood and Sand’ based on the well-known novel by Vincente Blasco Ibanez and directed one of theall-time-greats of Hollywood cinema, Rouben Mamoulian. Itsmain stars were the legendary Rita Hayworth and TyronePower, supported by Linda Darnell and a then not-so-well-known Anthony Quinn. Inspired by the character played byRita, BN worked on the storyline introducing the plot elementsof George Bernard Shah’s famous play ‘Pygmalion9’. A rusticilliterate girl becomes a sophisticated dame and dancer, intowhose life a happily married man gets entangled abandoninghis wife and children. Nagaiah was cast as the married manwhile the rustic girl was played by P. Bhanumathi who rose tostardom with this film.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORAbolishing death penalty will push up crime rate

Sir, in his ‘No holds barred’ column, M. A. Sadanand, minces no wordsto condemn the death sentence awarded to the four involved in the Delhigang rape case (Mambalam Times, Sept. 21-27). He is of the view thatinstead, the guilty should be made to live and suffer.

The intensity of the punishment usually depends on the intensity ofthe crime and also to create a fear and deter other from committingsuch crimes.

Even when capital punishment is meted out, there appears to be nopalpable change in the mindset of the criminals and the crime graphis only on an uptrend.

If the death sentence were to be abolished in the country, as has beentrotted out by many legal luminaries, will it not push up the graphfurther?

If, for instance, a criminal is instead awarded life imprisonment, hewill laugh his way to the jail, enjoying the life at the cost of the publicexchequer.

How can we make him suffer in jail? By way of torturing him, givinghim arduous jobs or confining him in a solitary place?

Well, if the death sentence does not act as a deterrent in heinouscrimes, then we need to think in terms of hanging the criminal in fullpublic view.

It will be a cruelty to those who lay down their lives helplessly if wesympathize with the criminals. – V. S. Jayaraman, 31, MotilalStreet, T. Nagar

Metrowater not as prompt in supplying wateras demanding tax

Sir, it is hilarious to see the press notification issuedby Metrowater directing the consumers to pay their dues towardswater tax, by September 30.

Metrowater is the only government undertaking in the countrydemanding payment of water tax without supplying water. Their watersupply system is erratic, irregular and uneven in distribution.

I am living in the foothills of double tank, 6th Sector, 27th Street, K.K.Nagar, Chennai and we were getting water on alternate days. In spiteof several reminder emails, personal visits to concerned officials andraising this problem during grievance redressing meetings in the past2 ½ years, no permanent solution is seen.

Since May even this has stopped and the pipeline has run dry. StillMetrowater demands tax.

Metrowater do not give any prior information about cession of watersupply except when an interconnection work is underway.— R.Sundararajan, 6th Sector, 27th Street, K.K. Nagar
