-Introduction to the workshop
M. Battistin – 28th May 2010 EN/CV/DC 2
Welcome to the third workshop on Thermosiphon
After more than one year of activity on this project achieved steps:
• TS WI: describe the main lines of the project
• TS WII: assess the feasibility and obtain resources for mini-thermosiphon and full scale thermosiphon bench test
• TS WIII: shows first results form mini-thermosiphon and launch the engineering phase of ATLAS ID cooling refurbishment project to comply with the 2012 installation planning

Status of the cooling systemATLAS ID Evaporative cooling station is running in this very moment. We cannot forget:• The important failure of 3 compressors on May the 1st 2008.• The fatigue problem observed on autumn 2008• The cylinder suction valve problem on 14th February 2010.• …this is not a reliable system!
M. Battistin - EN/CV/DC 15th April 2010
The alternative solution shall be: • Reliable• Clean: wear of components obliges to
an important filtering process • Leak-tight: developing with time due
(in part) to vibrations• Oil free• Able to manage mixtures (C3F8-C2F6)

Main streams of investigationSince the compressor refurbishment executed during spring 2009 we decided
to not invest on Haug compressors any longer and study alternative solutions. Two main streams of study has been defined:
1) No compressors: thermosiphon project2) Alternative compressors (screw, labyrinth, membrane, centrifugal): finally
the centrifugal magnetic bearing oil free compressor has been identified as very good candidate (Turbocor – McQuay)
Oil free gas bearing centrifugal compressor is a very new investigation line we are opening now. It is premature to give details.
