The next film of importance for G. Ramanathan as musiccharmer was ‘Adithan Kanavu’, once again a Modern The-atres’- T.R. Sundaram production which came out in 1948.

‘One Thousand and One Nights’ or ‘The Arabian Nights’ hasbeen a treasure trove of story material all over the world, moreso in India. There is another collection of stories‘Kashi MajliKathalu’, inspired by The Arabian Nights, which has beenpopular in Andhra. Many Telugu and Tamil films have drawnextensively from both these collections.

In ‘Adithan Kanavu’, Sundaram cast T. R. Mahalingam asthe hero. Mahalingam has been discovered by AV. Meiyappanwhen he cast him as boy Krishna in ‘Nandakumar’ (1938).Later he cast him as hero in ‘Sri Valli (1945).’ Since its success,he remained a popular singing hero and acted among others intwo Modern Theatres productions, ‘Mayavathi’ (1949) beingthe second film. However, his ventures into production andsome negative factors in his life landed him in trouble later.

Anjali Devi, who had made a splash in Telugu cinema with‘Gollabhama’ (dubbed into Tamil as ‘Maya Kudhirai’) moved toTamil Cinema where she remained a successful heroine forquite some time. Later, she turned producer with mixed resultsbut continued to act, playing mother roles.

‘Adithan Kanavu’ is all about two cousins, commanders in akingdom. They make a promise that their children, if one is aboy and the other a girl, should marry each other. However, they part company over a trivial issue and one of them(veteran stage and screen star of yesteryear, K. P. Kesavan)leaves the kingdom and seeks employment elsewhere.

In due course, the two marry; one gets a son (Mahalingam),and the other, a daughter (Anjali Devi). The two grow up indifferent places and a heavenly Gandharva couple brings themtogether by carrying them with their beds. They fall in love, marry as per the Gandharva custom, and enjoy wedded bliss. Before sunrise, the angels bring them back to their homes.

The man pines for his sweetheart and goes out in search ofher. The woman becomes pregnant and undergoes manyproblems as her child is taunted as illegitimate. The lover, whenhe was a child, has been taught by his mother, an expert sweet-maker, a song while making ‘palkova’ (a milk sweet),‘Madhuramaana ruchi ullathey…’ and this song is used as aninteresting clue in the movie and helps the two families to cometogether and live happily ever after.

The story was made into an absorbing movie by Sundaramand, expectedly, music played a major role in enhancing it. Inparticular, the Palkova song written by Papanasam Sivanand his brother Papanasam Rajagopala Iyer with musiccomposed by G. Ramanathan became a super hit. During thatperiod of the movie, it was on practically everybody’s lips.Mothers who made kova sweets in their kitchens hummed thissong even though they sang it off-key! In those dayskovasweets were sold by vendors on streets and invariably theywould sing the song in order to attract customers. Such was thepopularity of the song thanks to Ramanathan.

The film had a dance drama - the Bhasmasura-Mohiniepisode - by Lalitha-Padmini which proved to be an addedattraction.

Ramanathan’s star was rising fast. The next movie of significance for Ramanathan was the

Madurai-based Murugan Talkie Film Company(MTF)production ‘Ratnakumar’. Though it was released onlyin 1949, it had been launched in 1946 with P. U. Chinnappa inthe title role. Bhanumathi played the heroine. She had madea splash as a vamp in B. N. Reddi’s milestonemovie‘Swargaseema’ (1945) where she shot into limelight withthe immortal melody ‘Oooohhoo, paavuramaa…’ An intellec-tual, she did not suffer fools gladly and often clashed withproducers, directors, and co-stars.

During the shooting of ‘Ratnakumar’, she had problems withChinnappa. One day, when she found thathe was smelling ofliquor, she walked out of the set threatening to opt out of themovie!

Realising her nature and her extraordinary talent, Chinnappamended his ways and the film was somehow finished andreleased three years later.

Vacant Corporation building being misused

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, The Corporation building on Duraisamy Road (West Mambalam)has been remaining vacant after ‘Amma Unavagam’, which wasfunctioning there, was shifted to bigger premises nearby.

Since there is no security , miscreants jump over the gate and misusethe compound for nefarious activities at night, causing nuisance tonearby residents.

I request the authorities to either provide a security at night or atleast seek the help of the police night patrol to monitor the location todiscourage the miscreants. – R. Venkatraman, Duraisamy Road,West Mambalam

Sir, The mainsewage linenear my officeon 9/6, Cha-krapani Street(West Mamba-lam) is cloggedand is causingfrequent over-flow of sewagewater from themanhole ontothe street forthe past sev-eral weeks.

Sewage overflows on Chakrapani Street

CMWSSB workers, instead of clearing the block, are only pumping outthe excess water into tankers every time we complain. The manholefrom which the sewage is leaking is in the middle of the road and in frontof our office. Its opening which has been left open permanently iscovered with a barricade to warn motorists. Some minor accidentshave already occurred at the spot as the barricade is not clearly visibleat night. Heavy vehicles ply on this road and the obstruction is causingtraffic congestion during peak hours. I appeal to the CMWSSB officialsto find a permanent solution to the problem. – C. Karthikeyan, 9/6,Chakarapani Street, West Mambalam, Ph: 98403 74447

Sir, I am a se-nior citizen andresident of ModelH o u s eRoad. There are anumber of TNHBhouses on the roadoccupied mostlyby senior citizens.Recently, a num-ber of unautho-rized structuresalong the banks of

Construction debris dumped on Model House Roadaffects residents

Buckingham Canal on the opposite side of the road weredemolished and the debris dumped in front of our houses whichis creating a huge problem to the residents. Passersby haveconverted these spots into an open urinal which is a healthhazard. At night miscreants take refuge to pursue nefariousactivities. I appeal to the Corporation officials to clear thedebris and cordon off the area. – Solomon Kishore, ModelHouse Road, Nandanam
