NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

From the one-rupee idly-saambar, the 20-rupee a kilounrationed rice at the Amutham Stores is Amma’s latestgift to the Tamilnadan, making the less endowed politicalbosses wonder, “Why didn’t I think of this simple stomachything!”

Well, Mr.Thinker, that is the reason why she hits thejackpot and continues to repeat the pattern at thequinquinneal haul when the grateful makkal show theirgratitude for the proven performance rather than theimagined glory of centuries-old literary ramblings.

When the stomach is riced well the ricer rises abovepetty things like politics which, according to a friend of minewhose name I forget, is the last resort of the scoundrelwhich is now overcrowded.

Do I hear anyone promising ten-rupees-a kilo rice? Well, that is good! Let there be competition for love of makkalrather than for love of lucre!

Service lanes of UsmanRoad flyover encroached

flyover is not serving its purposeto regulate traffic as its servicelanes are encroached upon byhawkers, thereby inhibiting freeflow of traffic.

Adding to the problems, shop-pers park their vehicles on theside lanes, thereby reducing itswidth and causing congestion.

I request Chennai Corpora-tion officials to take immediatesteps to evict the hawkers fromthe service lanes and strictlyenforce ‘No Parking’ rule on theside roads. – R. Narasimhan, 9Unnamalai Street, T. Nagar,Ph: 2814 1680

Sir, Digging for constructing stormwater drain was started on our road a monthago. During the initial stage itself the residents objected to the work but the localofficials informed us that it was a pilot project executed by Tamilnadu Govt. acrossthe city for the benefit of its residents.

The digging was carried out with JCB machines without proper coordination withMetrowater and EB departments.

This resulted in damage to EB cables, drainage and Metrowater pipes. There were no Corporation officials supervising the work which was invariably

carried out at night. In spite of the visible damages caused to the pipes, the workerscontinued their work using the JCB machines and did not inform their supervisorsabout the damages.

The aggrieved residents then met the Assistant Engineer, Corporation Ward 125.He advised us to meet the Zonal Officer in Ripon Building as it was a centralizedproject.

Since April 10, the work has been abruptly suspended and has stopped right infront of my house. I am now facing the following hardships:

Since the water pipe has got damaged my house is not getting Metrowater for morethan 10 days. Sewage-mixed water is stagnating in the pit emanating a foul smelland becoming a health hazard. Sewage water is systematically leaking into the
