LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, A 6-foot-wide concreteslab lies dumped close to themiddle of Neelakanta MehtaStreet near its junction withThanikachalam Street (T.Nagar) for the past severalmonths. The 6-inch-high slabwas used by Chennai Corpo-ration workers to cover atrench dug by them but theynever had the foresight to levelit to the road surface.

Since it is not visible at

Last week the bumperof a car got badly damagedwhen it went over it, and it isnot the first time it has hap-pened. I appeal to the authori-ties to remove the slab andproperly cover the trench un-der it. – S. Bala, T. Nagar.

Foot overbridge unlikely to be used by seniorsSir, Foot overbridge work is progressing at the northern

end of Mambalam Railway Station, close to the long distancetrain platform. Looking at the height of the bridge, it isanybody’s guess how useful it will be, especially for the seniorcitizens. Most I guess would continue to resort to crossing thetrack to get across rather than using the bridge.

Instead, a five-foot-wide staircase connecting the foot-paths on either side of Duraisamy subway as is there in St.Thomas Mount Station would have been a cheaper and apedestrian-friendly alternative. – Radha S. Kumar, 1,Brindavan Street, West Mambalam

LIFE-GIVING INDIAMahatma Gandhi or M.A.Sadanand famously said that,

if you take an eye for an eye, half of India will be blinded.I think Chief Justice P. Sathasivam and his two com-

panions on the Supreme Court bench had read this greatquotable quote before they sat to do what others imaginedwould be the final obsequies as a balm to the soul ofhandsome Rajiv Gandhi whose body was blasted out of thisbeautiful world by the human bomb, aided and abetted bythe threesome.

Law is not an ‘ass’ as many ignorant people think but theonly balmy concoction that makes life slide smoothly inwhich process a large retinue of people make a living.

When Sathasivam was here and we two were thewarriors for Amma government, we were the closest of thepack of nearly a dozen lawyers. I found him the mosthuman of the lot. His further ascension to the Bench hereand then to the Supreme Court made him become thedeliverer of Murugan, Santhan, and Perarivalan, the crown-ing glory of a career that is going to end when he reacheshis65th birthday soon.

I feel the American wisdom may be imported by ourgovernment which would allow the Chief Justice to go onand on until he feels bored with judicial work after 90!

Krishna water arrives to offer reliefto cityBy Our Staff Reporter

Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh has finally arrived in Uthukottai,Thiruvallur district, about 150 km away from Chennai on March 30. TheAndhra Pradesh government has agreed to release Krishna water toChennai for three months. Krishna water proves to be crucial at this timewhen the water resources are fast-depleting and the groundwater level isalso on the decline.

While half of the amount received would be utilized for the city’s watersupply, the remaining amount would help step up storage of the cityreservoirs maintained by Metrowater department, which are currently at30 per cent of their storage capacity. Currently, residents are being suppliedwith 585 million litres of water on alternate days.

Every 500 cusecs that the reservoir receives is equal to 1,200 millionlitres a day, which is enough to significantly improve piped water supply tothe city, according a senior Metrowater official.
