The famous Tamil writer ‘Sandilyan’ (real name -Bhashyam)was associated with Chittoor V.Nagaiah intimately during theB. N. Reddi-Vauhini days. He later went to meet his old friendNagaiah in a city studio. The famed writer was shocked to seehis old pal dressed in a bizarre and outlandish cowboy costumeand holding a rifle made of bamboo. He was sitting under a treewaiting for the shot and, when the writer met him and ex-pressed his anguish about the sad state of affairs, Nagaiahreplied, Bhashyam, udhara nimittham bahukrutha vesham!”(A Sanskrit proverb which means that, for the sake of thestomach, one has to play many roles.). Sandilyan had tears inhis eyes when he narrated this incident to this writer manyyears later.

In the 1950s, the Indian Government bestowed on Nagaiahthe ‘Padma Sri’ award. When this writer called on him to offerhis congratulations, Nagaiah remarked, My dear boy, I haveonly ‘Padmam’ and no Sri’! ‘’ He meant that he had only famebut not fortune.

One time this writer went to meet him along with a friend whowas a great admirer of the star. After some small talk, thefriend told the great man that he had never witnessed a filmshooting. Nagaiah took down his name and address in somecorner of the city. Months later, this writer was astonishedwhen the friend told him over the phone that one morningNagaiah came to his house in a hired vehicle and took the entirefamily to watch a film shooting. At that time, he was down andout facing many hardships in life and yet he went out to of theway at much expense to make a casual acquaintance happy.Such men are rare and perhaps exist only in the pages of fiction. However, Nagaiah was a real man of Old World values andculture&

Nagaiah had many human qualities rarely seen in humanbeings in this world. He had the habit of saluting every trafficconstable he came across while going in his car. When he wasasked about it he replied, These people stand all day under thehot sun only to help us and guide us to drive safely& we do notpay or even tip them and the least we could do is to salutethem.” Such was his kind heart and concern for his fellowhuman beings

Nagaiah maintained an open house and all ‘comers-andgoers’ took full advantage of his hospitality. His generosityoften exceeding the limits was one of the causes of his financialruin. He did not also know who his real friends were and manytook full advantage of his goodness.

If the great actor and adorable man died in penury, one of themany causes was the person himself. Sadly after his demisehe was forgotten by the ungrateful world but a few old friendsand admirers led by the veteran Telugu film journalist andscholar Inturi Venkateswara Rao who succeeded after muchstruggle to erect a statue of Nagaiah inside the Paanagal Parkin T. Nagar, Madras (now Chennai), near the area where helived most of his life in the city.

This writer owes a lot to this great soul. He can never forgetthe lessons Nagaiah taught him in acting and also filmmakingwhen he was still a kid in half pants who had absolutely no ideathat he would one day land in the world of lens and lights! Thatis the way the ball bounces in life, as they say...

Here was a man, when comes such another!(To be continued)

Sir, The working committee meeting of T. Nagar Residents’ WelfareAssociation was held on October 27. A number of issues and organi-zational restructuring was discussed during the meet.

A resident of Rangan Street mentioned that in his apartmentcomplex, a number of residents had sold their flats to the owner of anearby commercial complex and that all kinds of pressures are beingbrought upon the existing residents to sell and vacate their flats.

Since this is a serious issue and prevalent in a number of otherapartments as well, the matter will be taken for discussion andredressal in the next meeting to be held on Sunday, November 10.

New office bearers will also be elected during the meet. The Association appeals to its members to attend the meet in large

numbers. – R. Mohan, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association,30, Rangan Street, T. Nagar

LETTERS TO THE EDITORT. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association’s

meet tomorrow

Commuters should report fleecing auto driversto the authorities

Sir, It has been almost a month since the revised auto fares cameinto force. While it cannot be denied that there are a few law abidingauto drivers who use the fare meter and charge by the revised card rate, there are still many who still demand flat rates, which are almost twicethat of the card rate.

The rich or those in a hurry do not question the erring drivers whichonly encourage them to continue fleecing their customers.

This is the time to make a collective resolve and to either report tothe concerned authorities or flag away auto drivers who demand excessfare. Only with our cooperation will the authorities be able to implementthe new fares successfully. – Lakshmi Narasimhan, New No. 18/30,Thambiah Road Extension, West Mambalam

Appeal to MTC for bus service between West Mambalamand Egmore Station

Sir, There is no MTC bus service from Mambalam to Egmore Station. This is probably because of the connectivity of suburban train whichdoes not suit everyone, especially senior citizens.

At present, residents of West Mambalam are forced to take an autoor call taxi to reach Egmore.

The bus service 9A, which used to ply from West Mambalam toParrys Corner via Egmore, was terminated a long ago without anyreason. Several requests made subsequently to MTC by the residentshave gone unheeded.

With the introduction of the new mini bus service, I request MTC toply one such service between West Mambalam and Egmore. – T. N.Balasubramanian, Ragas Flats, Postal Colony 2nd Street, WestMambalam
