Recharge wells help to conservefresh water

By N. Ramshankar (Coordinator, SWARAN)This article refers to the problem of water inundation, open storm

water drains, water stagnation in storm water drains and sewage flowin storm water drains often reported in Mambalam Times.

SWARAN is a citizens’ network that works with resident welfareassociations and neighbourhood communities to promote rain waterharvesting and fresh water conservation.

In Mambalam Times (June 9-15 issue), there was a report that thestorm water drain in Prakasam Street (off Habibullah Road), T. Nagarwas filled with rain water.

During the rains last week, we took pictures of how the rain watercollected on the road and flowed smoothly into the recently constructedrecharge wells in Raman Street and Lodikhan Street, T. Nagar.

The 15-ft deep recharge wells are 3 ft to 4 ft in diameter, and can takein 3000 to 5000 liters of water at a time and percolate it very quickly, and recharge the depleted ground water aquifers. These wells are alsocalled ‘leaky wells’ which means that as the water enters these wells,it simultaneously gets absorbed into the ground and then are ready totake in more water.

In fact, during the recent heavy spell of rain, there was no stagnationin the two streets.

SWARAN had earlier interacted with the residents of these twostreets and officials of Chennai Corporation, and sought the expertiseof Sekhar Raghavan (Director of Rain Center), to get the recharge wellsof proper dimensions incorporated and installed within the footpatharea.

Solving the problem of water stagnation is often a very simplesolution such as these roadside recharge wells and residents shouldurge the Corporation to construct these instead of storm water drainswhich cause immense hardship and health hazard to the residents.

Residents across various localities should interact with their respec-tive resident welfare associations as well as the office of DC Works,Corporation of Chennai and request construction of more and morerecharge wells rather than storm water drains to solve the twinproblems of water stagnation and water scarcity in our city.

Residents who want the help of SWARAN may contact N.Ramshankar (Coordinator) in [email protected].

(N. Ramshankar is a resident of 92, 3rd Cross Street,Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Besant Nagar).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Getting/correcting voter identitycards cumbersome

Sir, India has one of the most advancedelectoral processes but even today the processof obtaining or correcting details in voter identitycards is still a cumbersome process,

Persons who shift house frequently for onereason or the other suffer as the system ofchanging the details in the voter identity cardis a hard and time consuming process. Further, the e-seva centers are also not helpful inproviding accurate information, forcing thevoter to run from pillar to post.

The Election Commission, in association withChennai Corporation, should streamline theprocess of applying, correcting of voter IDcards so that the citizen’s right of voting is notcompromised during elections.

They should also think of reintroducing theolder system of door-to-door verification andcollection of voter details well before electiontime.

Street corner turned into garbagedump

Sir, The end of the 86th Street, Ashok Nagar, behind Stella Matriculation School and near anEB transformer has been converted into a garbagedump. Nearby vendors, residents and passersbydump food waste in plastic bags, kitchen waste, debris, damaged household items and otherputrefying garbage at the street corner and underthe transformer. A damaged sofa set has beenlying at the spot for several months.

A number of school children regularly passingby and other pedestrians are exposed to theserious health hazard.

I appeal to Corporation officials to remove thegarbage and clean up the street corner. Theyshould also install a ‘No litter zone’ sign at thespot. N. Vijayaraghavan, 18th Avenue, AshokNagar, Ph: 99626 64766

T. Nagar-Rangarajapuram buslink needed

Sir, There was only one MTC bus (12C) on theroute connecting Rangarajapuram/Five Lightswith T. Nagar via Duraiswamy Bridge but it wasdiscontinued and, instead, a mini service from T.Nagar via Madley Road subway to Rangara-japuram was introduced. Now, this too has beencancelled. Residents of Rangarajapuram are nowput to hardship. I appeal to MTC officials toresume the mini bus service or re-route 12C viaRangarajapuram again.

Natesan Street misused for parkingvehicles

Sir, For the past month or so, traffic police havereduced the patrolling of no parking zones andtowing away of vehicles in and aroundRanganathan Street. It has led to increase inparking of 2-wheelers and cars in unauthorizedplaces by shoppers, thereby putting the resi-dents to lot of inconvenience.

Of late, using Natesan Street has become anightmarish experience for residents and motor-ists. The street margins are taken over by ve-hicles parked haphazardly by shoppers visitingRanganathan Street. It gets worse during week-ends. Often our entrances are blocked and wefind it very difficult to take out our vehicles.

Will the traffic police take immediate action torestore towing away of vehicles? M. A.Jaishankar, 38, Natesan Street, T. Nagar,Ph: 97909 34666

Motilal Street misused for parkingSir, Shoppers are misusing Motilal Street, T.

Nagar for parking their cars and 2-wheelers.This is a hindrance to the residents, commuters

and regular traffic. The stretch from Usman Roadend till the middle of Motilal Street has beenconverted into a parking area. I appeal to the T.Nagar police to take action to prevent the misuseof Motilal Street for parking. V. S.Narayanaswamy, Motilal Street, T. Nagar

Frequent power cuts at nightSir, Of late, there have been frequent power

cuts, that too for long durations, at night inseveral areas in T. Nagar.

Last week there was no power from 10 p.mto 11 a.m in Balakrishna Naicken Street.During these sultry summer months, it is verydifficult to sleep at night without at least a fan.

As the fuse call office of EB does not attendto complaints and staff do not pick up thephone, we are not even able to lodge complaints.Often there is no one to receive complaintswhen we visit the office at night.

I request the TNEB officials not to schedulepower cuts at night and to attend to customercalls. Adhithya Radika, West Mambalam

PM’s yoga video motivationalSir, Regular exercise keeps the body and mind

fit and healthy. The recent video of Prime MinisterNarendra Modi exercising in the morning is a goodadvertisement and motivation for all age groupsto value the importance of regular exercise.Instead of appreciating Modi’s action, a seniorpolitician has criticized the video as cheap publicityand a political stunt. His statement was in badtaste.

It is to be lauded that amidst the tough scheduleof the day, our Prime Minister makes it mandatoryto exercise every morning to keep fit.

I appeal to countrymen to laud our PM’scommitment. N. Vijayaraghavan, 18th Avenue,Ashok Nagar
