Lyveden Reconnected – Artist commission 1 Lyveden Reconnected Lyveden Manor Artist Commission Brief Deadline for submissions 9am 10 th June 2019 Introduction At Lyveden we are about to embark upon a project like no other in the National Trust. Lyveden is one of the most important and unique gardens in England. It represents one man’s expression of his faith and belief at a time of great instability, change and danger. As part of our ambitious programme, we are seeking a socially engaged artist to help our visitors explore the big themes that Lyveden represents. The unfinished garden lodge at Lyveden About Lyveden Lyveden is a mysterious and rare Elizabethan garden, deep in the heart of the Northamptonshire countryside. Begun by Sir Thomas Tresham in 1595 but never completed, it comprises moats, terraces, spiral mounts, an orchard, meadows, a labyrinth and the dramatic half-built garden lodge (pictured above). Riddled with religious symbolism, the gardens gave Sir Thomas solace at a very difficult time for English Catholics.
