DAVID WILLARD LYON 1870 - 1949

Have you ever wondered who D. Willard Lyon was? I have every since I joined our AYR Lyon Chapter. Well Thanks to my good friend Dale Ventres I now know who Mr. Lyon was and his impact on the YMCA movement in China, Korea and the Philippines. D. Willard Lyon was born on a houseboat in China. He was the son of Presbyterian missionaries. He graduated from the college of Wooster, Ohio and McCormick Theological Seminary. He also worked with John R. Mott. In 1895, his first year back in China, he founded Tientsin (Tianjin) the first student YMCA. In 1930, after 34 years of continuous service as a YMCA secretary, he was honored by the speaker at a farewell dinner in Shanghai, who commented, “The „Y‟ movement in China stands as a perpetual monument of Dr. Lyon‟s life work”. Halfway through his first term, the Boxer troubles forced Lyon and his wife to seek refuge in Korea, where they founded the Korea YMCA movement. In later years he helped start the YMCA in the Philippines. In 1928 he gave an address at the Jerusalem meeting of the International Missionary Council. During his later years of service in China, Lyon gave major attention to training Chinese YMCA secretaries and to developing literature for students. Various centers were organized where leadership train-ing class were held. A loan library and publications department, precursors of the Association Press, were started under his leader-ship. He began a college student newspaper that became a widely read student magazine, The Chinese intercollegian (later called China‟s Young Men). Always an advocate of indigenous leadership, he enlisted an eminent scholar, Zia Hong-lai, to develop the lit-erature of the student movement. A gifted linguist, Lyon helped organize language schools and worked on the Mandarin Romaniza-tion Committee of the Chinese Christian Educational Association. He wrote the Christian Equivalent of War (1915) and edited for pub-lication Motts China Addresses. In his final years, he translated Tang Dynasty poetry into English. In 1949, on his last visit to China, Mott committed Lyon‟s “sacred dust...to the deep at the mouth of the Yangtze”.

SENIOR TIPS

SCAMS TRAP OLDER ADULTS BECAUSE OF MEMORY LOSS, LONELINESS, TRUST.

ARTICLE RE-PRINTED FROM A RECENT AARP BULLETIN

Folks over age 65 make up only an eighth of the U.S. Population but as many as a third of all scams. There are three common expla-nations for this disproportionate vulnerability: memory loss, loneliness and a supposedly more trusting nature. So what explains all those older folks who don‟t fit these descriptions but still get scammed? Research suggests answers that go be-yond the three main explanations: The natural aging process can cause subtle shifts in mind and mind-set that open the way for scammers in unexpected ways: Memory Loss Starting in our 30s, our brains begin to shrink, says Virginia Templeton, director of MemoryCare, an Asheville, N.C. facility that treats people with memory disorders. With normal aging, the pace of processing information slows, becoming more noticeable in our 60s. “In people with early memory loss, even before it‟s clear that there may be a problem, judgment, reasoning ability and decision-making skills may change,” she says. “And in many scams — telemarketing, fake lotteries — you have to ‟act now!‟” These de-mands for speed, of course, are there for a reason. “Unless you‟re patient enough to give yourself more time to process everything, you can be more vulnerable,” says Templeton. Research also finds that other changes that are frequently shrugged off as memory loss become more common after age 65. For instance, if they‟re repeated enough, you might believe false statements such as “You forgot to pay me!” or “We agreed on this price.” Your defense is to write everything down. And ability to grasp details such as contract terms can start to wane daily at around 2 p.m. Scammers often call late in the day.

Loneliness It‟s loneliness or feeling undervalued that boosts a senior‟s risk of falling for scams by 30 percent, suggests new research by Peter A. Lichtenberg of Wayne State University‟s Institute of Gerontology. Both states of mind, he says, “fall under the need of having status in society and those needs not being met. It comes down to feeling socially isolated.” Even if lots of family, friends and coworkers are around, a thoughtless remark, a rude store clerk or private worries can cause a sense of being unappreciated or unnoticed to take root. Scammers step in to provide fake emotional support - while taking your money. More Trusting It‟s often said that seniors tend to take people at their word. But studies find that many older people are in fact better at detecting lies than younger folks. Still, older people “tend to be more patriotic and more religious, “says neuropsychologist Stacy Wood of Scripps College, traits which the bad guys can sometimes exploit. Patriotism can open the door to scam-mers who pretend to be from a government agency or a veterans group. Being religious, meanwhile, can make people vulnerable to cons involving fake charities or other supposed good causes. Finally, studies show that age can dull the abil-ity to spot warning signs that are obvious to younger people. A possible explanation for that: “Compared to other age groups,” Wood says, “older adults tend to have a more positive outlook.”

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE

Page 7 LYON LINKS

PING PONG My friend is engaged in a major custody battle. His wife doesn‟t want him and his mother won‟t take him back. QUICK STUDY A mathematician and a farmer are traveling by train. They pass a flock of sheep in a meadow and the mathema-tician says, “there are 1,248 sheep out there”. The farmer replies, “amazing. By chance, I know the owner, and that figure is absolutely correct. How did you count them so quickly?” The mathematician replies, “Easy, I just counted the number of legs and divided by four. LATEST ON MENTAL HEALTH Did you hear about the paranoid man with low esteem? He thought no one important was out to get him. I used to be schizophrenic, but we‟re all right now. My inferiority complex isn‟t as good as yours. Henry tried to kill himself with an overdose of aspirin, but after he‟d had two he started feeling a lot better.

LEGAL REPRESENTATION The Godfather, accompanied by his attorney, meets with his accountant. The Godfather says to his accountant, “Where‟s the three million bucks you embezzled from me?” The accountant doesn‟t answer. The Godfather pulls out a gun and says “if you don‟t tell where it is I‟ll shoot you in the head and splatter your brains against the wall.” The attorney interrupts, “Sir the man is a deaf-mute, but I can interpret for you.” The attorney, using sign language, asks the accountant where the three million dollars is. The ac-countant signs back, “the money is hidden in a suitcase behind the shed in my backyard.” “Well what did he say?” asks the Godfather. The attorney replies, “He doesn‟t think you have the guts to pull the trigger.”

THE AGES OF MAN - THE FOUR STAGES OF LIFE 1. You believe in Santa Claus 2. You don‟t believe in Santa Claus 3. You become Santa Claus 4. You look like Santa Claus

WITHIN THE LAW A policeman spots a man driving very erratically. He pulls the man over and asks him if he‟s been drinking. “Yeah,” replies the man. “Me and my friends stopped by this bar where I had six or seven beers. Then we went to a bar where they serve great margaritas so I had four of those. Then I stopped on the way home, got a bottle of whisky, and drank that too.” The policeman says, “Sir, you need to step out of the car and take a breathalyzer test.” Indig-nantly, the man replies, “Why? Don‟t you believe me?”. HELP A guy phones the local hospital and yells, “You‟ve gotta send help. My wife‟s in labor”. The nurse says, “Calm down. Is this her first child? He replies, “No. This is her husband.” THEY GOT A BIT OF THE HUMERUS Two cannibals are eating a clown. One says to the other, “Does this taste funny to you”.

DOGGONE SMART Two women are arguing about which has the smarter dog. The first women says, “My dog‟s so smart, every morning he runs to the newsstand with money in his mouth, buys a paper, runs back, lets himself into the house, and brings it to me in bed”. The second women replies, “I know.” “How could you know?”. Asks the first women. The second women replies “My dog told me”. DIETER‟S PRAYER Lord, if you can‟t make me skinny, please make all my friends fat.
