Philip J Milton & Company PLC relocation
Philip J Milton & Company plc is delighted to announce its relocation to
Choweree House at 21 Boutport Street, Barnstaple, during the Christmas
period.
Philip Milton, Managing Director, said ‘Despite the fact that moving out of the
town may well have been a cheaper alternative, as a local Company first and
foremost, this was not an option for us. We have always prided ourselves on
retaining a central and accessible position within the local community and it was
essential for us to maintain this for our clients. Sited on the corner of Boutport
Street and Vicarage Street, Choweree House offers a bright aspect, central
position within the town, some free parking for our clients, and spacious
accommodation for staff. Dating back to at least the 1840s and protected by
Grade II listed status, the building also retains many original features which we
hope our clients and staff will enjoy. Whilst care has been taken to preserve and
retain the original character of the property and to embrace its heritage, this is
complemented by some of the most modern and efficient technologies and
communication systems to ensure the Firm can continue to provide its clients
with the professional and caring service, for which it is renowned, well into the
future!”

Grants available for community renewable energy
projects
Working in partnership the Exmoor Trust and Exmoor National Park are
pleased to announce a new round of funding from the Carbon Neutral Exmoor
project to support community based renewable energy projects.
Funding is available to cover the costs of installing renewable energy (including
both power and heat) within community buildings across Exmoor National
Park. The funding is offered as a grant repayable via the governments Clean
Energy Cashback for a period of 10 years or until the grant is repaid
(whichever is the shortest). This is at minimal risk to the community as
cashback payments (through the Feed in Tariff for power and the Renewable
Heat Incentive for heat) are guaranteed for a 20 year period once a project is
accepted and the grant is only repaid via these contributions.
Archie McIntyre, Fund Manager and Vice Chairman of the Exmoor Trust
commented: ”We’re delighted to be able to play an active role in supporting
communities that wish to take advantage of cleaner and cheaper energy. Our
hope is that any community organisation that is interested in sourcing
alternative power or heat requirements will be able to do so without having to
find the significant capital funds often required for such schemes.”
On behalf of Exmoor National Park Dan James, Sustainable Economy Manager,
said: “To date the fund has been able to support over 20 community projects
through the Carbon Neutral Exmoor project, incorporating a range of
technology from solar pv to woodchip heating systems. Not only is this work
helping to reduce carbon emissions within the National Park it is also helping to
provide modern facilities within community buildings and helping them to
reduce their monthly expenditure on fuel bills.”
Community buildings that have benefitted in the past have include sport clubs,
village halls, community owned shops, schools and even a pub. At this stage any
organisation that may be interested in taking forwards a project is encouraged
to submit brief details to the Exmoor Trust as an expression of Interest by the
end of March 2016. This will help to assess demand for the scheme now and
into the future and the Trust will advise you as to whether a project might be
eligible for a full application.

Hello Readers
I hope you are all settling into the New Year. I am in full swing for the post-
Christmas Diet and have also given up Facebook for a month in an attempt to
free up more time at the school where I work, and at home. Anyone who
knows me or school life will appreciate Facebook is quite a challenge to leave.
There are work projects, uploads, photos, history, and much of my life is
broadcast there. That’s without messages from friends back home, reminders
about birthdays and who is doing what, so I have had to go back to basics.
Moving on this month I am going to talk about some programmes that are
included within Windows 7 and 8, as shown below. So….
Windows Snipping Tool This is used if you want to take a snapshot of your
screen. It might be used, for example, if you wanted to send an error message
to your computer technician, or to show a friend something you don't
understand. Click the Start bar and type Snipping tool and click the program to
open. Once open you have some options. Personally I only ever use the
Rectangular Snip as this allows you to cut around the box. Automatically it will
dull the screen. Then you can click Hold and drag a box around the part you
want to save. When you let go of the mouse it will put your “Snip” into the
program. You can then save it by clicking on the disk button or click on File
and Save.
Sticky Notes These are great for leaving yourself messages so if you need to
check your bank details or send an important email, this programme is for you!
Again, click the Start button and type Sticky Notes. Then type your message. If
you need more than one message click the + button at the top left of the
notes. Want a different colour? Right click on the sticky note you want to
change and select a different colour. Even paste information you might need
for later, web addresses or whatever. Anyway, I hope you find this information
useful and as usual, if you have any questions, please send them to me, Andy at

Business Promotion Grant launched by Devon
Delivers Meeting
Businesses across Devon are being invited to apply for a grant to help them
reach new audiences. Devon Delivers, the County Council programme which
aims to encourage businesses to relocate to Devon, has launched its Business
Promotion Grant to help companies promote their goods or services to
national and international trade audiences.
Grants of up to £1,000 are being offered through a competitive bidding
process. The funding will support eligible businesses to cover direct exhibiting
costs of attending trade shows or events between February and December this
year. The deadline for applications is Friday 5 February.
The Business Promotion Grant intends to promote Devon brands and
ultimately Devon as a location where businesses thrive. The funding can help
Devon organisations to gain national and international exposure. This can
enhance their competitiveness and support the development of their business;
all of which benefits Devon’s growing economy.
Councillor Andrew Leadbetter, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for
Economy and Growth, said: “This new grant from our Devon Delivers initiative
is an opportunity for companies and organisations to showcase their businesses
and services to a wider audience. We want to encourage businesses to
promote themselves and this grant will enable us to help successful applicants
do just that, while also serving to highlight Devon as an excellent place to do
business.”
The grants are only available to Devon based businesses or organisations with
products or services originating substantially in Devon. Priority will be given to
businesses promoting a new product or service, and also to those in certain
sectors including digital/creative, advanced engineering, business/professional,
distribution/logistics, research/science, energy and marine.
Applications should be submitted to [email protected] no later than
noon on Friday 5 February. Successful applicants will be notified by Monday 15
February.

North Devon photo picked out in national competition
A photograph taken in North Devon has been earmarked as a top entry in MyHappyPlace, a national competition designed to stamp out the January blues.
Amanda Goldston, 49, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, entered a photo she took at the Valley of Rocks, just outside Lynton on the North Devon Coast. She said: “This is one of the most southerly glacial valleys. I grew up in the in area and used to walk up over here as a child with my grandmother. We would always stop and have a piece of dark chocolate at the top. Whenever I come up here it always clears the cobwebs, relieves all my stress and it really is the place where I feel happiest and most at peace.”
January’s 'Blue Monday' is allegedly the most depressing day of the year. To try and help cheer up the nation in the bleak days of January, National Accident Helpline created MyHappyPlace. The competition asks people all over the UK to share a photo of a place which makes them feel happy when they're ill, injured or simply feeling down.
MyHappyPlace is open for entries until February 18th and you can find details and enter your 'happy place' photo here: https://www.national-accident-helpline.co.uk/personal-injury-claims/recovering-your-injury.html/myhappyplace
You can view more of the top entries here: https://uk.pinterest.com/nataccidenthelp/myhappyplace/

Lynton Cinema listed at number five in Saga’s
‘Britain’s ten best independent cinemas’
If you don't fancy seeing the new Star Wars film at a big soulless multiplex but prefer a
traditional, local, independent cinema here’s the SAGA guide to Britain’s finest.
1. The Rex, High Street, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire This movie house began
life in 1938 as an art deco palace, closed in 1988 for 16 years but was restored and
reopened in all its elegant glory in 2004. No popcorn allowed, no hot dogs, and the
stalls have swivel chairs and tables.
2. The Scala, High Street, Prestatyn, Denbeighshire Thriving 115-year-old, two-
screen venue re-opened in 2015 and not only shows current films but stages live
screenings of plays, operas and ballets from all over the country.
3. The Grosvenor, Ashton Lane, Glasgow Opened in 1921 but relaunched in
2003 as an independent cinema, eating and drinking complex with restaurant, cafe
and two screens. Luxury leather seating further enhances the experience.
4. Zeffirellis, Compston Road, Ambleside, Cumbria There's no parking but
there are five cinema screens and a jazz venue thanks to owner Derek Hook who is
also a drummer in a local band and spends two months of the year in India.
5. Lynton Cinema, Lee Road, North Devon Various cinemas have operated in
this Exmoor village since 1916 even though the population is barely 2,000. This one
opened in 2001 and operates in a former Grade II listed Methodist church which
only accommodates 68 moviegoers.
6. The Station Cinema, Station Yard, Richmond, North Yorkshire Housed in
what was once the terminus of the old railway line (which closed in 1969) this
opened in 2007 and is the star attraction along with shops, restaurants and
exhibitions.
7. Plaza, Lemon Street, Truro, Cornwall The cinema began life here in 1936 and
still retains its art deco features while broadcasting live transmissions of theatres,
concerts, operas and ballets as well as regular film performances. The premiere of
the new TV series of Poldark was held here.
8. Hyde Park Cinema, Brunel Road, Leeds When it first opened in 1914 this
cinema was labelled ‘the cosiest in Leeds’ and it still lives up to its name. The city
council saved it from closure in 1989 and since then it has gone from strength to
strength.
9. The Genesis, Mile End Road, Whitechapel, London E1 It began life as a
music hall in 1848 then became the Paragon Theatre of Varieties, became a a cinema
in 1912 then closed down in 1989 before being re-opened by entrepreneur Tyrone
Walker-Hepburn whose parents used to watch films there.
10. The Palace, Upper Market Street, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire They
used to call it a fleapit but now this fiercely-championed Grade II listed cinema has
two screens, is fighting off the threat of a local multiplex and is open every night
except Monday.

It was on the Saturday night just before Christmas that the 'Cottage
Inn' showed just what a great venue it is; That it includes a fantastic Thai
restaurant is understood. However on this particular night it went up a notch
by featuring an excellent jazz duo!
Rosie May is a stunning singer with a voice reminiscent of Billie
Holliday. She was complimented by one of the best guitarists I have heard for
years. Very strongly influenced by Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery Ben Modley
provided a gently effective backing to Rosie. Full, but never overbearing his
style made every song sound full and complete. Their repertoire included
many of the standard jazzy numbers you might expect but they also did a
great version of 'Walk on by' and a few other unexpected gems.
To me it was like heaven, sitting in this lovely old place listening to the
quality of music that, up country, I would have travelled miles for. I spoke to
some of the diners afterwards and they were all delighted by the evening and
were amazed to find such delights in this out-of-the-way place.
Well done Gary! Thanks for your hard work and imagination in making
this happen. You brought deep joy to 'Old Geezer Plays Guitar'. Let's have
some more!
If you are going to sing sea-shanties you have to have a big beard and a
big belly (though, hopefully the former being hairier than the latter!) 'The
Roaring Trowmen' sea-shantied with such gusto that the large crowd of
happy drinkers looked positively sea-sick at the 'Hunters Inn' last Saturday.
The song about rounding Cape Horn in a Force Nine when the cabin boy got
washed overboard and eaten by an amphibious rabbit had many faces wet
with tears that ran down trouser legs but Guvn'r Dave really pushed the boat
out and gave us another treat! The great 'Teyr' played a powerful mix of folk
songs that showed just what good musicianship can bestow upon the genre.
A memorable night, David! You have presented some really good
music lately and are making a rotten winter easier to bear.

MBE for champion of hen welfare
The founder of a hen welfare charity has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s
New Year’s Honours list. Jane Howorth, who set up the British Hen Welfare
Trust in 2005, has been recognised for her charitable work which has grown
from a ‘one-woman-and-a-van’ operation rescuing battery hens, into a national
organisation that promotes hen welfare and the British free range egg industry.
Jane Howorth was inspired by a Panorama programme in 1979 at the age of
19. So moved was she by the plight of battery hens that she later went on to
start the charity from a spare bedroom, single-handedly re-homing battery
hens that would otherwise have been destined for slaughter. From small
beginnings, the charity has grown considerably and now has a team of over
450 volunteers across the UK, operating from over 30 pop-up re-homing
points. The charity celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2015 and has found pet
homes for nearly half a million ex-commercial laying hens so far.

is keeping both the public and users safe whilst educating everybody that these devices
cannot be used on public roads or pavements. If guidance is continually ignored, officers
may consider seizing devices and report users for prosecution.

New Marine Conservation Zones come under
attack
A number of newly created conservation zones designed to protect the West's
marine environment have been dismissed as "cosmetic, politically correct and
ineffectual". A total of eight new Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ) were
unveiled for the South West yesterday – a designation which aims to identify
and restrict harm to precious underwater habitats. The UK's leading marine
charity hailed the announcement as an encouraging "step in the right" direction
towards a solid network of protection. However, fishing industry leaders
dismissed the zones as pure tokenism which were impossible to police.
Nationally, 23 new MCZs have been announced, including a stretch of the
North Devon and North Somerset coastline.
The first MCZs were established in 2013 and a third tranche will follow in 2016
which will aim to complete the English component of the UK's contribution to a
network of Marine Protected Areas in the North East Atlantic.
