Love the Place You Live….… and Do Something About it!

Championing the catch phrase, ‘Love the Place You Live’ - the push is on for members of the broader Southern Barossa community and businesses to engage in discussion about future models for communities working together. The focus extends from the ‘Redefining Community Committees’ project established by The Barossa Council, which looks at how Council and the Community work together to better manage community assets and events while recognising the changing commitments of volunteers and the need to help volunteers make a difference in their community. In the Southern Barossa there are currently eight Section 41 Committees supporting the management, operation and development of community facilities including Lyndoch and Districts Community Committee, Williamstown Community Council, Williamstown Historical Society, Williamstown Queen Victoria Jubilee Park Committee, Williamstown Institute Hall Committee, Lyndoch Institute Hall Committee, Curdnatta Park Committee and the Rowland Flat Community Centre Committee. The challenges of governance, compliance, budgets and finding a quorum at meetings is preventing Community Committees and the broader community from realising the potential of the Southern Barossa as a destination and as a great place to live. A group of passionate ‘locals’ are looking to reform and reinvigorate the Southern Barossa by establishing a Southern Barossa Association that acts on behalf of, and in the interest of existing community groups and businesses.

If you ‘Love the Place You Live’ and have ideas for the management of recreation parks, halls, main streets and community events in the Southern Barossa and how this rapidly growing region should develop, you are encouraged to share your ideas at a community workshop at St Jakobi Lutheran School (Lyndoch) on Wednesday August 12 at 6pm.

LYNDOCH HISTORICAL SOCIETY Members enjoyed the hospitality of the local CFS when the Historical Society held its recent General Meeting at their premises. This was the first opportunity for most members to visit the new Lyndoch CFS station and be shown the facilities. Plans to commence a fire service in Lyndoch began forty years ago in 1975 and an outline of the group’s history to current times was presented by CFS Captain, Neville Kies. After viewing the control room, seeing all the equipment on the trucks as well as the water carrier and equipment trailers,

members gained a greater appreciation of the work this voluntary group does.

Afternoon tea shared by Society and Brigade members followed, during which those present saw some old “Home Movie” films from the 1940s that brought a laugh. Quentin Nuske thanked Reuben Batten for the invitation to visit the station and see the old films. Members were also informed that the celebration of

Lyndoch’s 175th Anniversary will be held on the weekend of 18th to 20th September. During the Sunday, the Society hopes to arrange for the unveiling of an interpretive board of an early painting of Lyndoch. The next meeting of the Society will be the Annual General Meeting that will be held on Sunday 25th October at 2.00 p.m. in the meeting room at the rear of the Lyndoch Library. The topic will be a Power Point display of “Lyndoch in 1915”. It is also hoped that artist, Margaret Sloan, will feature a display of some of her paintings of Lyndoch.

Williamstown Uniting Church Garden Club Recycling was the subject at the July meeting of the Uniting Church Garden Club with guest Theresa Dolman from NAWMA, who explained why recycling is necessary. We have become a society of throw-aways and landfill will not be able to cope with all our rubbish. Do we really want to live on top of a

rubbish dump. The big trucks come to the depot, are unloaded on to conveyor "belts" and then items sorted by hand, so it helps if tins and bottles are rinsed. Many types of plastic means it can be confusing so a good rule to follow "squeeze it, if it keeps it's shape - recycle - if it breaks - bin it. Small tops or lids can't be handled so bin them or put them into a larger container and recycle. "Trees for Life" are replacing a small part of what we are chopping down for paper etc. The meeting started with 3 luscious soups and rolls and thanks to the busy cooks. Birthday greetings to Eve Searle, who was also a

raffle winner along with Betty and visitor Carolyn and competition winners were Joan Reilly, Kathy Tregeagle and John Cooke. One of the gardens we have visited was featured on "Gardening Australia" with Sophie Thompson interviewing the owner Christine Kowald of Birdwood. Next meeting on August 3rd will be a "home" meeting at 1pm with Christine Baker who will tell us more about Madagascar, a fascinating place. Please join us bring a friend or two. Competition is a pot plant, usual trading table and afternoon tea, question time. Monday August 3rd at 1pm at Uniting Church, Williamstown.

Sporting Hub Study The Barossa District Football and Netball Club (BDFNC) has welcomed The Barossa Council’s announcement of funding to conduct a feasibility study into the establishment of a community sporting hub at Lyndoch Recreation Park.

In 2009, the Club commenced the development of a Club Strategic Plan which was published in 2011 after an intensive review of the needs of Football and Netball in the Southern Barossa. This plan identified the increased deficiencies of the current facilities at Williamstown Queen Victoria Jubilee Park and constraints on facility development to meet the current and future requirements of the Club. This was particularly compounded by the rapid growth in housing development and increasing numbers of young families in the Southern Barossa seeking access to sporting facilities.

As part of the Club's Strategic planning process a facilities development option paper was developed that recommended that:

Barossa Council take leadership in the determination of the most suitable location for the

Barossa District Football and Netball Club.

The potential for Lyndoch Recreation Park to be developed as a regional community and sporting hub for the Southern Barossa and for WQVJP to be developed with a focus on supporting regional recreational activities.

“Our Club looks forward to working with The Barossa Council to develop this feasibility study. We understand this will include an extensive community consultation process to assess the viability of developing suitable facilities to meet the increasing needs of our expanding Southern Barossa community,” said BDFC President, Sandra Zachopoulos. "This includes additional, high quality playing surfaces for football, netball, cricket, tennis and little athletics and upgraded function centre facilities for use by the sporting bodies and for community events.

Lyndoch Social Dancing Lyndoch Social dancing has been running on Friday nights since February 2009 and is still going strong. Many different styles have been learnt over this time and every Friday night we get together to have fun learning new dances and old favourites. Dancing has many health benefits as it's good for the body in exercising many muscle areas and mentally for the social aspects and friendships formed along the way. All skill levels are welcome, partners as well as singles are encouraged to attend. Even if you don't have a dancing partner, don't be discouraged as there are many of us who come along regardless. It's also a great opportunity to come along and learn a special dance for a wedding or school formal. The hall is fully heated and air-conditioned for comfort all year round.

Recently a Tea Dance was held with part proceeds donated to the Barossa Area Fundraisers for Cancer Group, to help support the wonderful work they do. Raffles and door prizes were won and a great night had by all who attended.

We will be holding a Tea Dance on Sunday 6th September at 3pm. Please bring along a plate of food to share and we will supply the tea & coffee.

Lyndoch's Got Talent Do you have a talent? Or know of someone who likes to perform? Then we have the event for you!!

There are already performers locked in but we are still looking for more for the evening. If you have a talent you'd like to share, like to sing, dance or perform a skit then contact Irene on Tel. 8524 4067.

Dancing with the Stars To celebrate Lyndochs 175th Anniversary of settlement we wanted to hold an event where you can get dressed up, gather some friends and celebrate with a dance and a drink or 2. Were letting you know early so that if you need time to organise something to wear you've got time. Stay Tuned…...

It will be another 25 years before a large anniversary like this. Will you still be here?

I guess I'm making a plea to you all in the community to consider your attendance at any of these events listed here. Many hours of preparation and planning go into events like these by volunteers and when they aren't supported it is very disheartening for those involved. We have tried to come up with events that will be low cost and suit all ages, from families to singles. Bring along your friends if you feel you won't know anyone, or come along and meet some new people. Please consider how you will celebrate this milestone in the community that you may live, work or be involved in. Can't say if I will be here in another 25 years….. but I hope so. Ed.
