MAY DERBY RACE EVENT—SOUTHWEST REGION—MAY 19-23

EVERYBODY! Get your Mint Juleps and Derby Hats ready to launch our summer success with a Kentucky Derby Themed May RACE Event. This is NOT a company sponsored event but a Southwest Region event that will spur some territory pride among the winner(s). Details of the event are as follows: This is a friendly competition at the Regional level and winners will have territory bragging rights. The Derby RACE should not conflict with any regular RACE activity planned, and is just an over-lay to generate more excitement and “territory pride”. All territories must use the same point system (provided below) for this contest, even if you use some additional metrics for your local rep level effort. Points for this competition are: Dials = 1 point Drops = 3 points Appointments = 5 points (defined as a set appointment with a DM) Master apps = 25 points The Regional Instructor of the top 2 territories by RACE point total points will be allowed to re-ward up to $100 in prizes at the territory level any way they see fit – all to the top winner, split to four winners, etc. Total territory points for the full RACE event (Mon-Fri) will be used to determine final winning territories; numbers need to be sent in the following Tuesday morning (May 27) to the RDM. * In the event of a tie, the territory with most appointments set will be the winner.

Colonial Life Sponsors National Small Business Week Small business: the little engine that could

— and does

Small businesses are America’s business engine: They create two out of every three new jobs, and half of America’s workers own or work for a small business. And they’re big business for Colonial Life, too, accounting for two-thirds of the company’s sales last year.

That’s why Colonial Life was quick to ink the exclusive insurance industry co-sponsorship for next week’s National Small Business Week, a nationwide effort of the U.S. Small Business Administration to support and promote the 28 million small businesses that drive America’s economy.

Small Business Week events take place May 12-16 in San Francisco; Kansas City, Mo.; Boston; and Washington, D.C. The cross-country event is designed to engage the small business community and highlight the impor-tance of small businesses as innovators and job creators. Thousands of people are expected to attend live and online events including forums and panels, networking events, trade shows and webinars.

As part of its sponsorship, Colonial Life will present a live webinar on employee bene-fits for small businesses at 4 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, May 13. Participation is free but requires advance registration (YES, you must register ahead of time for this webinar) and spaces are limited. Colonial Life also will ex-hibit at trade shows in each featured city next week.

“Small employers are big business for the U.S. economy,” said Gil Youmans, direc-tor, Small Market Solutions for Colonial Life. “Providing benefits solutions for small busi-nesses to help them grow and be more com-petitive has been an important focus for us for the past 75 years. We look forward to sharing some of what we’ve learned to help other busi-nesses succeed.”

As part of the sponsorship, we will be hosting a webinar on Tuesday, May 13-1 pm PT. The webinar is an overview of voluntary benefits and their importance to small employ-ers & their employees. (YES, you must regis-ter ahead of time for this webinar!)

Disability Insurance Awareness Month Newly-branded materials, videos, training and more Disability coverage is a very important part of an employee’s benefits package. What would your customers do if they were out of work due to an illness or injury? Would they be able to continue paying their mortgage or rent, utilities, food, cloth-ing and other bills to support their family? Probably not for long. That's when disability insurance can step in and help during troubled times. The ability to support oneself if dis-abled or unable to work is among the top three financial con-cerns for people—ranking just behind money for retirement and paying medical expenses. Yet, too many of today's work-ers aren't covered by disability insurance. Throughout the month of May, disability insurance is in the spotlight. Take some time to look over the materials and re-sources related to our disability products and promote the value of Colonial Life disability products to your accounts. Check out the Disability Overview page on Propr for more information. Newly-branded disability materials Several of our disability marketing pieces have been updated and refreshed with the new Colonial Life and Paul Revere brand:

Two by Four Cover-age Solutions Use our Two by Four underwriting offer to place Disability 1000 in your small accounts, or to place Disability 1000 or Group Disability in large accounts. Use our disability products with your direct accounts and boost your standings in the second quarter Direct Summit sales contest. 1st Quarter: Outstanding! Results Colonial Life began the year with significant milestones: a refreshed brand in January, a

new public website in March and a 75th anniversary celebration in April. In between, the com-pany closed the books on first quarter with significant progress in several areas, including positive growth in sales and operating income.

First quarter sales of $72 million were up 6.5 percent compared with a year ago, just be-

low an aggressive plan. Sales in existing accounts and commercial markets drove this success, overcoming below-plan results in new account and public sector sales.

More good news: Sales from first-year representatives nearly doubled over first quarter

a year ago. The number of new reps was up nearly 32 percent, and the number of “impact dis-tricts” — those producing at least $400,000 in sales premium — exceeded plan.

“The increased success of Colonial Life’s newest team members is a good sign for fu-

ture sales growth,” President and CEO Randy Horn said in an email to employees. “With a new cancer product and RACE event in April, small business and disability promotions in May, new life product enhancements in August and other initiatives underway, we expect these positive trends to continue and grow in the months ahead,” Randy said.

Positive sales momentum, along with good benefit results and investment returns, also

contributed to a 5.3 percent increase in pretax operating income at $79.4 million. Meanwhile, the internal customer service measure — a combination of weighted aver-

ages from several areas — exceeded plan with a 103 percent score. “Excellent customer service makes a big difference in a highly competitive market and

is an important way we live our brand promise to work to a higher standard,” Randy pointed out.

Pretax operating income — We exceeded our goal on this measure in first quarter with a 5.3 percent increase over last year, driven by good benefit results and investment returns. Customer service score — We exceeded plan with a strong 103 percent score on this measure, which combines weighted averages from several areas. Excellent customer service makes a big difference in a highly competitive market, so thank you for your efforts. Customer satisfaction survey score — This measure is based on satisfaction survey re-sults from plan administrators, claimants and policyholders administered by external market research vendors. Our most recent survey results showed 90 percent of customers are highly satisfied or satisfied with our service.
