The ‘Sunshine State’ generally needs no introduction; visitors from the entire world have been flocking to the shores and amusement parks of Florida for a long time. So long in fact, that this year, Florida celebrates its 500 year anniversary since Ponce de León first stepped foot on Floridian land just north of St. Augustine. Today Florida is home to well-known authors like Irving Welsh, sport

stars like Tiger Woods, musicians like Jimmy Buffet, and countless A list celebrities. Although Florida was not always known for luxury, today the state boasts Ritz Carlton’s on each coast, luxury beach bungalows and 6 star residences for long stay holidays.

A big reason why Florida attracted a whopping 1.58 million British and 1.6 million Brazilian visitors in 2012, the Sunshine State’s top markets for international visitors, behind Canada, are the incredible experiences on hand - from beach combing to shopping to golf, yachting and romancing. Miami and Orlando definitely attract the majority of international visitors, especially from the UK and Brazil, but there are so many hidden gems in this state. A long coastal drive is a must, to experience the best of Florida’s sun, sand, and adventure. 2013 is set to be another record year for tourism. The beaches are one of the most popular tourist attractions, along with some of the world’s best known theme parks, including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and SeaWorld. However, some of Florida’s best secrets are in secluded locations away from tourist areas and well worth seeing. Like Amelia Island in the Northeast and Destin in the Northwest. Regardless of preference, Florida has something to offer for all kinds of travellers. This comes as no surprise considering Florida offers so many different experiences.

The Florida Keys have a mystical and Caribbean feel, while the beaches of the Gulf Coast with their friendly towns and people have a residing charm. Miami with its art deco buildings and stylish residents is high end, sexy, and seductive. While just north Ft. Lau-derdale and Palm Beach is an Englishman’s dream, a picturesque place to have afternoon tea on the beach in a designer bathing swimsuit of course. Across the coast in Naples, where many British property investors have been flocking impeccably manicured golf and spa resorts pair perfectly with al fresco dining on Fifth Avenue South. To explore all the cities and seaside villages of Florida could

take a lifetime or at least a long retirement, so start with one coast each holiday. That way by the time retirement arrives you know where to buy!

Sometimes overlooked yet never underestimated, the Florida art scene is thriving coast to coast. This year sales begin on famed British architect Zaha Hadid’s Miami masterpiece condo residences One Thousand Museum. Art Basel Miami Beach takes place in December and is a must see for art buyers, sellers and enthusiasts around the globe. One of the largest Salvador Dali collection in the world can be found in St. Petersburg along with upscale Victorian B&B’s and picturesque harbour views.

Along with a dynamic art scene new restaurants and food trends are popping up from Pensacola to Miami, the most successful of which are combining international influences with fresh produce, seafood and fish. Miami is one of America’s fastest growing cities, along with the migration comes incredible influences from the southern United States to Argentina, there are serious adventures to be had exploring this sun city’s food culture.

The more time spent on the water the better is the traditional philosophy in Florida. There are boat and yacht charters available throughout the state, but typically Ft. Lauderdale on the Atlantic coast and Naples on the Gulf Coast are rated the best locations. Florida’s fishing industry is one of the largest in the country and that includes fishing tourism. A report completed by Florida Tax Watch, an independent research firm suggests fishing tourism has an almost 5-billion dollar economic impact on the state and supports 80,000 jobs. Grouper to yellow-tale snapper, fishing in Florida is year round.

The best part of Florida is the constant change. Each area really does enjoy its own personality, lifestyle, and intrigue, which is not the case in many popular travel destinations today. Eat ceviche for lunch in Miami and within a few hours have fried chitlins (pig intestines) for dinner outside Orlando. Watch beautiful chic people walk down Collins Avenue for their morning coffee, and that afternoon cruise up the coast on a new yacht. This state truly offers visitors a memorable vacation in a world-class destination.

Who is Ponce de León?Born in the village of San Tervás de Campos in the province of Valladolid, Spain in 1474, Juan Ponce de León became a page to the prince of Castile who later became King Ferdinand of Castile. Ponce was a soldier, a sailor and explorer who lived from 1474 to 1521.

What did Ponce de León do?In 1493, as a young man, Ponce de León was aboard one of the fleets of Spanish ships in what became known as Christopher Columbus’ second voyage. The expedition established a perma-nent Spanish colonial presence in the New World. As a prominent Spaniard, Ponce eventually was named Governor of Puerto Rico by King Ferdinand in 1511. Then on March 3, 1513, under a license the King granted him to explore and discover lands reputed to lie to the north of Hispaniola and the Island of Bimini, Ponce set sail with two caravels, Santiago and Santa María de la Consolación; and a galley like craft, the bergantín San Cristóbal.

By March 27 he’d seen the mainland of Florida and sailed north presuming it to be an island. At noon on April 2, 1513, Ponce de León’s navigator, Anton de Alaminos, recorded their location at thirty degrees eight minutes north latitude, just south of present day Ponte Vedra Beach. The next day Ponce de León and his men came ashore and claimed La Florida for Spain, becoming the first documented visitors of European culture to Florida’s coast. By stepping foot in Florida, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, by many accounts, discovered mainland America. La Florida in colo-nial times extended north to Canada and west to Mexico.

This year St. Augustine celebrates 500 years of history on Florida’s Historic Coast, an area that witnessed Juan Ponce de León discovery of Florida and is home to the oldest continuous European settlement in the United States. The corresponding events and activities that have taken place throughout 2013 will continue until 2015 when St. Augustine turns 450 making the city

America’s oldest. Florida’s Historic Coast, St. Augustine, Ponce Vedra and The Beaches remains the only documented location for Juan Ponce de León’s 1513 voyage of discovery. Although the exact location of the historic landing is not known, the most contemporary account of the expedition shows that Ponce and his crew came ashore the very next day to plant the flag of Spain. The second major histori-cal landing on Florida’s Historic Coast took place on September 8, 1565, when Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles came ashore and founded the city of St. Augustine. Since that day there have been people of European descent thriving in St. Augustine. EXPERIENCE THE GOLD STANDARD

The Palm Beach and Broward Coun-ties, more affectionately known as the Gold Coast, epitomise class and luxury in Florida. Sitting directly on the Atlantic Coast, this charm-ing area is full of prime entertain-ment options, white sand beaches,

a thriving art scene art scene and quite a lot of glitz and glamour. Here is a look at some of the top cities worth exploring on Florida’s vibrant Gold Coast:

Palm BeachOften referred to as the Island of Palm Beach, this elite town is separated from its from neighboring cities of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth by the Intracoastal Waterway. Still the most exclusive community in Florida, Palm Beach is the wealth epicentre of the Sunshine State. With money so old it’s hard to even recognise any of the big names surrounding the town. So called new money like Donald Trump, Rush Limbaugh, and Jimmy Buffet now call the city home too, but they are still not the Palm Beach noteworthy.

In Palm Beach where homes are routinely sold for tens of millions of dollars, even new celebrities have a hard time gaining access to this ultra-exclusive private city. November to April is known as “The Season” in Palm Beach, Florida’s 16-mile-long Atlantic coast barrier

island that still awes visitors 100 years after its first development. That means designer-store openings, mansion parties, celebrity fly-ins.

For a rainy afternoon, if you get one that is, take in the Flagler Mu-seum. The first development in Palm Beach, Whitehall was Henry Flagler’s estate, the 19th Century industrial baron and main visionary behind several areas in Florida. When it was complete in 1902 the New York Herald proclaimed that Whitehall was “more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world.”

Pineapple Grove District off of Atlantic Avenue and check out this unique arts district’s diverse offering.

At Christmas, Delray Beach boasts the largest Christmas Tree in the world at 100 feet tall in Old School Square along the city’s main street the famed Atlantic Avenue. Also worth checking out is The annual Savor the Avenue event, generally held in March which sees a five-block stretch of Atlantic Avenue transformed into the longest dining table in Florida, seating more than 1,000 guests.

West Palm BeachAlthough not as ritzy as it well-known neighbour West Palm Beach is a town that likes to have fun in the sun 365 days a year. Sunfest, West Palm Beach’s biggest annual party, may be the show stopper but it is certainly not alone in getting this city with miles and miles of bike lanes and sidewalks moving.

Spend a day touring CityPlace, a unique collection of stores and restaurants along Okeechobee Boulevard and Clematis Street. The Norton Museum offers plenty for art lovers, while Antiques Row along Dixie Highway is a haven for collectors. If the family has interest in astrology, be sure to stop by the South Florida Science Museum for an interactive day of fun and education. At night head to the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts which host more than 800 yearly events, with more than 400,000 people in attendance annually.

Boca RatonLong thought of as a retirement haven, during the tourist season November to April, Boca Raton is very much a party town, albeit with a more subdued, suburban mind-set. The “Pink City” is known

for its combination of natural beauty, sophisticated shopping and cultural attractions. Some of the outstanding beauty the town offers is on display at the Gumbo Limbo Environment Complex, showcasing outdoor aquariums and pristine views along the Intercoastal Waterway.

For a bit of charm and history head to Boca Raton Resort & Club, designed by legendary architect Addison Mizner in the 1920’s, the hotel woes visitors in a majestic setting. At night head to Mizner Park for restaurants to please every palate, plus an amphitheatre that books nationally known acts.

JupiterOn the northern edge of the Gold Coast sits Jupiter. Life in this refined seaside enclave is easy-going and low-key, and yet there’s access to plenty of luxury amenities, whether you’re a visitor or a resident. On the down-home front, baseball devotees love the proximity to spring training—both the St. Louis Cardinals and Mi-ami Marlins train and play at Jupiter’s Roger Dean Stadium. And tying it all together are those lovely Florida Atlantic coast beaches—long, broad, and ranked consistently among the best beaches in the world.

Golf lovers will also enjoy Jupiter for its expansive courses set right on the water perfect for competitive or relaxing play. Jupiter is also known for its array of luxury homes and mansions, the majority of which are located close to the A1A coastal corridor.

Florida.” Closer in proximity to Ft. Lauderdale than Miami, the city of Hollywood hugs the waterfront between the two.

This cosy beachfront community is well known for its magnificent “Broadwalk” - A paved, beachfront walkway that separates the sand from the shops and restaurants serving beachgoers. The Broadwalk is an integral part of the community and history and includes a grandstand where the city often hosts music concerts. It also doubles as the city’s main workout venue as joggers, bikers, and power walkers are ever present. Check in at the Westin Diplomat for a plush stay right on the water.

Ft. LauderdaleJust 20 minutes north of Miami, life in Ft. Lauderdale, is comfort-able to say the least. With laid back beaches, boutique shopping, art galleries and fine dining on Las Olas Boulevard this city has something for everyone.

Alfresco dining leads the way, with an abundance of restaurant choices with varying cuisines and styles on Las Olas Boulevard its easy to understand why this city is gaining in popularity and why you can spend the entire day there. Enjoy people watching - an event within itself for the tourist in Ft. Lauderdale and then take a stroll down the boulevard to check out unique galleries and prop-erty companies listing manor estates right on the water.

Mega-yachts line the city’s main harbour parked outside multi-million dollar homes. Steven Spielberg, R&B singer Usher and Mi-crosoft magnate Paul Allen are just a few of the high profilers who keep slips here. With 300+ miles of inland waterways and 50,000 registered yachts, Fort Lauderdale is dubbed “the Yachting Capital of the World.” It’s also home to the two largest cruise ships in the

world, and one of the largest boat shows (Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show). The famed Intracoastal Wa-terway offers close and sce-nic - proximity from the inland waterways to the Atlantic.

This ever increasingly popular luxury destination offers a host of excellent hotels including the Ritz Carlton, W Hotel and a Hilton all on the waterfront. Ft. Lauderdale is also home to eight different beaches all with a unique flavour. Whether in the mood for a party or a quiet Sunday on the water, this city offers it all. Charter a yacht for the day to cruise in style; this is one of the best places in Florida to “be seen.” Oh and don’t forget to buy your captain’s hat on Las Olas.

WellingtonWhat would an ultra-luxury holiday be without a stop to the Polo grounds? The town of Wellington is synonymous with horses, home of the International Polo Club Palm Beach, this is centre stage for the high-speed polo winter season. Meanwhile a stone’s throw away is the Palm Beach International Equestrian Club, the epicen-tre for jumping, dressing, and steeplechase events. The Equestrian Club boasts the prestigious National Horse Show and the Winter Equestrian Festival, the nation’s top jumping event. This horse lov-er’s paradise nestled on the water is a choice spot for the ‘Game of Kings.’ Beware you will not be able to dodge the Paparazzi here, with the likes of Tommy Lee Jones and Bruce Springsteen regularly mounting up, the camera is never far!

Naples, the charming resort city on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, has long attracted British pensioners and tourists. In fact the city has several British themed pubs and even a British food purveyor for longer staying guests. Visitors luxuriate in the area’s stylish atmosphere, which includes beautiful downtown pedestrian walks with shops, art galleries

and restaurants. In the Port Royal neighbourhood drive through manicured avenues taking in row after row of palatial homes surrounded by tropical landscaping. Naples is famous for its beautiful white sand beaches, golf courses, fishing, boating, water sports, arts and culture and spectacular sunsets. The high season is relatively short running from January through May, so the majority of the year Naples hotels and resorts offer a unique bargain. The off-season visitor also benefits from wide open beaches, plus easy access to golf courses and restaurants.

The citizens of Naples, just like the visitors, make use of the beautiful weather and surroundings. Whether taking relaxing walks in downtown Naples where beautiful architecture meets wondrous window shopping and trendy cafés, or in pursuit of more active excitement, Naples definitely has a unique balance not found in other destinations. The city, long known for being a family destination and a retiree hot-spot, has focused on attracting young couples in recent years. The outdoor activity and workout scene is one of the most vibrant in Florida, with kite-surfing being a leading past time. Just sitting in a Starbucks in Naples will bring you face to face with the next generation of ‘health’ entrepreneurs from new protein puddings to work-out events hosted on the beach; Naples is one fit and active town.

Naples is a huge retirement destination for both Americans and for-eigners, so it’s no surprise the treasure hunting and antiquity scene rivals that of Rome. All along Third Street South, Naples’ business district at the turn of the century and now a recognized historic district, consignment and antique shops offer spectacular deals on one of a kind items. The area has become a trendy shopping village with more than 100 shops, all within walking distance to the beach. You will definitely want to make time for Gallery Row, a collection of distinctive art galleries located near the intersection of Broad Street and Third Street South. Third Street South even has its own Street Concierge because who likes walking in the wrong

direction when trying to find that killer gargoyle? Just a few blocks away, Fifth Avenue South, the main street of Downtown Naples has undergone a renaissance. Famed architect and urban planner Andres Duany led the innovative redesign effort fifteen years ago that has transformed Fifth Avenue South into a dynamic pedestri-an-friendly scene both day and night. Acting as the official High-road of Naples, Fifth Avenue South has a lot to boast about. The street is lined with trendy cafes, art galleries and some of the best people watching in Naples. In the daytime luxury cars make use of the city’s free parking, while their owners pop into the numerous designer stores and art galleries. Surprisingly the town stays open quite late, a midnight craving for ice cream can quickly lead to pubs and dance clubs, all centrally located on Fifth Avenue South.

DAYTRIP-SUNJust 15 miles south of Naples lays Marco Island, the largest in a chain of 10,000 islands on the Gulf of Mexico. The natural environment in and around Marco Island provides the perfect backdrop for both relaxing and adventurous activities. Marco Island’s beach and surrounding sand bars offer some of the best shelling in the world, rivalling that of the nearby renowned shelling destination Sanibel Island. A casual stroll along Marco Island beaches will reward the shell seeker with a wide variety of shells including whelks, olive shells, scallops and hundreds of other gems of the sea. Rent a boat in Marco Island for a fun day of touring the islands, with 10,000 to choose from, it really makes for a great camping trip - Just don’t run out of gas!

DAYTRIP-ADVENTUREEverglades City is a slow moving picturesque base camp for avid outdoor adventurers as they head out for paddling and fishing in the Ten Thousand Islands portion of the Everglades, and for hiking in the cypress forests of the western Everglades region, known as the Big Cypress Swamp. Everglades National Park is the only subtropical preserve in North America and is part of the largest wetlands ecosystem in the United States. The park is known for its rich bird life, and is also the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles exist side by side. Everglades National Park a World Heritage designated site offers airboat tours and camping trips, although most visitors come for the backwater fishing reeling in trout and redfish while navigating shallow waters and meandering trails through miles of mangrove islands.

TPC Sawgrass - Ponte Vedra Beach

The TPC Sawgrass golf course in Ponte Vedra Beach, is perhaps the world’s most famous. As the pride of the PGA TOUR and the permanent home of “The Players Championship,” the Stadium Course sports one of the most recognizable and challenging holes on the PGA TOUR. The infamous par-3 17th hole features an island green that makes or breaks players. Golf enthusiasts will find not one, but two PGA TOUR championship courses both designed by world-renowned architect Pete Dye. The Stadium Course and Dye’s Valley Course set against North Florida’s naturally compelling landscape offer two, perfectly balanced game experiences.

World Woods - Brooksville

World Woods located in Brooksville is about a 50 minute drive from Downtown Tampa. The stunning 36-hole golf facility is designed by Tom Fazio who refers to it as his “best work.” The calibre of the two golf courses coupled with the quiet location and spectacular forestry offer a world-class golf experience. Both Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks have been listed among the top 100 golf courses in the US for many years. Pine Barrens sculpted from an expansive pine forest is a visually stunning blend of native terrain and golf course design with dramatic changes in elevation whereas Rolling Oaks offers nice slopes, meticulous fairways, beautiful oaks and flowering shrubs.

Bay Hill - Orlando

Want to stay at the winter home of golf legend Arnold Palmer? The Bay Hill Club & Lodge located 15 minutes from downtown Orlando is renowned for its championship golf course, site of the PGA TOUR’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. The Club is private, but as a lodge guest, you are entitled to play where the pros play. You’ll also enjoy the outstanding amenities of this world famous resort including a full service spa, salon, junior Olympic sized pool, tennis, complete fitness centre and the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy.

Hammock Beach - Palm Coast

Located in Palm Coast, between St Augustine and Daytona Beach, Hammock Beach Resort features two signature golf courses designed by golf legends. The Ocean Course is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design featuring six holes that put players on the brink of the Atlantic Ocean. The course concludes with a thrilling finale dubbed “The Bear Claw” — a collection of four daunting holes precariously edging the sweeping coastline. The Conservatory Course is an 18-hole Tom Watson design featuring 140 acres of dramatic elevations and undulating greens not commonly found in Florida. Truly a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience, the award winning resort provides the perfect location for the ultimate golf trip.

Tiburón Golf Club - Naples

Designed by legendary PGA TOUR Hall of Famer Greg Norman, Tiburon is one of the best 36-hole facilities around. Located at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort, Naples, Tiburón has two 18 hole courses -the Gold and Black, carved out of 800 acres of Florida foliage. These courses will provide a pleasurable play for amateurs and pro’s alike. Each distinctive element has been carefully integrated to produce a pleasing atmosphere in which to appreciate the finer aspects of the game. Every December Tiburón Golf Club and Greg Norman hosts the Franklin Templeton Shark Shootout featuring 24 of the top PGA TOUR Players.

PGA National Champion - Palm Beach Gardens

PGA National Champion first opened in 1981 is located in South East Florida and has five championship courses to choose from and a PGA National Gold Academy to help polish up on your game. The Champion Course redesigned by Jack Nicklaus hosts some of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, including the annual PGA Seniors’ Championships. One of the toughest courses in Florida, the Champion course is home of the infamous Bear Trap and the Honda Classic tournament that takes place in Spring. More than a resort golf experience, PGA National is a championship golf experience. How will you play?

Waldorf Astoria Golf Club - Orlando

Located at one of Orlando’s most luxurious hotels, The Waldorf Astoria Golf Club provides a truly exceptional setting for a luxury golf trip. Test your skill on the 18-hole Rees Jones-designed championship course, winding through a large wetland preserve. Holes are visually arresting from tee to green and require intelligent management of the game. Bunkers are carved to be reminiscent of the hazards designed on courses a century ago. Majestic stands of pine and cypress trees line the fairways. The style of this meticulous Orlando golf resort was dictated by the land’s existing contours. Enjoy the convenience of a fully stocked Pro Shop. After a round of golf, relax in The Clubhouse Grille with refreshing drinks and traditional clubhouse dining.

Turnberry Isle - Miami

The Turnberry Isle Miami is definitely one of Miami’s best golfing experiences. World Golf Hall of Famer Raymond Floyd completely redesigned both championship courses and the results are nothing short of spectacular. In doing so, he also changed the landscape of Florida golf. Both courses; the Soffer and Miller, are unlike any other in Florida with gently contoured fairways, doglegs, spectacular water features, and more elevation changes than is often seen in this part of the state.

Home to over 1,250 golf courses, The Sunshine State is undeniably the golf capital of the country! -That is more than any other state whilst Palm Beach County is home to more golf courses than any other county in the country. Florida’s art scene has been accelerating all over, everywhere from St. Petersburg to The Palm Beaches, but nothing quite compares to the upsurge witnessed in The Magic City. Miami has long been known for its great beaches, perfect weather and sizzling nightlife and over the last decade has also transformed itself into an international mecca for the arts. As soon as you step

off the plane at Miami International Airport, you are welcomed by intricately designed interior spaces and corridors filled with stunning murals, paintings, photographs and mosaics boasting a dynamic collection of unique artwork from world-renowned artists. Art and Culture is everywhere in Miami - Just walking around Miami Beach visitors will appreciate the beautiful Art Deco architecture, landscaped gardens, curated parks and art adorning the walls and lobbies of their hotels. Not stopping there, Miami is also home to an array of world-class museums, galleries, exhibitions, performances and fairs for visitors to immerse themselves in. Underscoring Miami’s growing stature as one of the world’s preeminent centres for art culture is Art Basel Miami Beach. This sister fair to Art Basel Switzerland is in its 12th year and will take place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 5 to December 8, 2013. The show will present artwork ranging from modern masters to the latest contemporary works and for the first time in Miami Beach, will also include a section dedicated to editioned works. Nearly 260 leading international galleries from over 30 countries across North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Africa will take part, showcasing works by more than 2,000 Artists. Occurring alongside Art Basel Miami Beach is Design Miami, the premier global forum for design runs from December 4 to December 8, 2013. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, galleries, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce, presenting and consuming museum-quality exhibitions of 20th and 21st century furniture, lighting and works of art. Many of Miami’s internationally renowned institutions also offer special exhibits to coincide with Art Basel. The Bass Museum of Art, Wolfsonian, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Miami Art Museum will all be hosting exhibitions high on the list of art enthusiasts. Apart from the fantastic art events, Miami also boasts world class performing arts centres including the incredible New World

Symphony Center, de-signed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry which opened in Miami Beach in 2011 and the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, commonly referred to as The Arsht Center. Not only is The Arsht Center, Florida’s largest performing arts centre but it is also one of the largest in the country. The venue is one of only four major centres in the United States featuring three separate performance facilities created to present ballet, opera, theatre and symphonic music. A new $44 million South Miami-Dade Cultural Center also opened in 2011 on six acres of waterfront property in Cutler Ridge. Conceived as a multidisciplinary arts centre and showcase for the performing arts, the complex houses a 966-seat theatre, a dramatic “Art in Public Places” project by internationally renowned artist Robert Chamber, an activities building and two outdoor performance spaces. With cutting edge arts districts, visitors to Miami can enjoy many galleries. Miami’s Design District, a unique community just north of downtown Miami is fast becoming the centre of the home furnishings and interior design industry in South Florida. A number of significant galleries have chosen to locate within the synergistic environment created by the myriad furniture and design showrooms that line the streets. Notable galleries include Bernice Steinbaum, Diaspora Vibe Gallery, the Moore Space and Barbara Gillman Gallery. The neighbouring, Wynwood Arts District is also home to dozens of museums, galleries, warehouses and exhibition spaces, including MOCA at Goldman Warehouse, which features art from the personal collection of urban visionary and South Beach pioneer Tony Goldman, who is largely credited with the transformation of the neighbourhood. Nearby, the Rubell Family Collection houses one of the world’s most important and largest private collections of contemporary art, with over 1,500 pieces spanning several decades, from well-known artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol. Both the Design and Wynwood districts host gallery nights on the second Saturday of the month, with locals and visitors passing back and forth between the adjacent neighbourhoods to explore the latest art trends.

Imagine waking up in a Mediterranean-style city of old coral buildings and picturesque streets shaded by great oak and Banyan trees. Imagine that the people you meet on its streets come from all over the world, that you will hear Spanish, French and Portuguese as often as English. Then imagine an endless choice of international stores and boutiques and fine dining.

Now, stop imaging. You are in Coral Gables, the closest thing South Florida has to offer to the old-world class and charm of Europe. Only the setting is a lush tropical garden bathed in the warm Florida sun. One of America’s first fully-planned communities, the “City Beautiful” was de-signed by artists and architects down to its finest details – from its welcoming coral entranceways to its elegant fountains.

Whether you choose to live in a quaint historic cot-tage tucked away in a secluded residential enclave or a $30-million waterfront estate facing the city’s 47 miles of waterways and coastline, you will be living in a city that is an enchanted garden unto itself, an architectural paradise reminiscent of 18th century Spain and 1920s Florida.

Since its founding in 1925, Coral Gables has become an elegant oasis in the heart of a great metropolitan area, an intimate community that offers an arts and cultural scene unrivalled for a city its size. There are dozens of galleries, four live theatres and two independent movie houses, as well as a wealth of musical offerings and year-round fes-tivals.

Located minutes away from the Miami International Air-

port and the Port of Miami, Coral Gables is one of the world’s most international cities and a gateway to Latin America and the world. The city is home to 150 multinational firms from nearly two dozen countries and 20 consulates and foreign government offices spanning the globe from Colombia to Taipei. It is also home to Centro Cultural Brazil-USA, and Curitiba is one of its sister cities. Today, more than half of the city’s residents trace their roots to Spanish-speaking countries.

But don’t just trust our word. Listen to what others have to say. Page 16: Luxury Living in Florida

An age-old idiom says the best things are found in the journey,

not the destination. Lucky for its visitors, Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida has both covered.

Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides When American journalist Marjory Stoneman Douglas coined the Florida Everglades the River of Grass, she hadn’t been aboard a Miccosukee airboat ride. If she had, she would have seen her imaginative metaphor in the literal sense. Visitors to Miccosukee Indian Village & Airboat Rides can glide swiftly through vast, pristine Florida Everglades and lose sight of where water ends and grass begins as each blends seamlessly with the other, painting a breathtaking landscape that stretches for miles. Along their air-propelled journey, visitors can see and be seen by the native wildlife from above and below including great blue herons, ospreys, kestrels, American alligators, and many others – and speeding past cypress islands, sloughs, and schools of fish, they’ll visit an ancient Indian camp that’s been owned by the same Miccosukee family for over 100 years. The instruction is simple: sit at the edge of your seat. The encounter usually goes something like this: An experienced demonstrator manoeuvres himself atop a massive alligator (American alligators can grow up to 15 feet long) and somehow immobilizes the Goliath. It looks like a precarious position to be in; the audience holds their breaths. Now he releases his grip – and to everyone’s surprise – the gator stays still. Then, the demonstrator puts his hand inside the gator’s gaping mouth. Another breath hold. Suddenly, the alligator forcefully jerks his stout body – over a half ton of pure muscle – and snaps his powerful jaws shut. Faster than the eye can discern, the demonstrator’s hand is back by his hips. He’s unscathed. The audience can breathe again. It may come as a surprise to know that as dangerous as they may seem, the live-capture techniques demonstrated in the shows

have been a very practical – and routine – part of daily life for Miccosukee

living in the untamed Everglades for centuries. Not only can

brave feats be experienced daily, but the Miccosukee Museum also offers a rare opportunity to be transported back in time and experience ancient Miccosukee customs in modern day. Visitors can tour the chickee pavilion

and let a guide illustrate essential aspects of daily

life, like the smouldering fire always at the centre of the cooking chickee, where Miccosukee women prepared traditional meals. Native artisans also craft beadwork, carve woodwork, and weave intricate patchwork right in front of visitors’ eyes.

Miccosukee Resort & Gaming Visitors to Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida can journey into the heart of the Everglades to find their adventurer’s spirit, and then head indoors to continue their exciting voyage at Miccosukee Resort & Gaming with seemingly endless opportunities for world-class gaming. Touted as the home of the highest payouts and the most promising possibilities, the facility offers over 1,900 gaming machines, High Stakes Poker and Bingo, and cash giveaways every day, all 24 hours. The entertainment continues with the diverse live events hosted at the prime entertainment venues under the same roof. For those seeking absolute relaxation and pampering, the Resort offers 302 luxurious guest rooms and is equipped with state of the art recreation facilities, including a temperature-controlled pool and a full service salon and spa. If visitors are travelling with little ones, kids’ play areas, a recreation arcade, and child-care services can provide the much needed relief and peace of mind parents crave. The Resort is also where some of the best Miami dining is housed. You don’t have to know how to pronounce the exotic sounding names of the restaurants - like Empeek Cheke, the Resort’s fine dining restaurant that features haute cuisine from an award-winning chef, or Empeeke Aaweeke, a buffet of international flavours with an Everglades view – to appreciate native favourites including wild boar, American Bison, and even alligator.

Miccosukee Golf & Country Club In Miami, the grass is greener on the other side and Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida has the grounds to prove it. Home of many LPGA and PGA events and the brainchild of world-renowned golf architect Mark Mahannah, Miccosukee Golf & Country Club just might be South Florida’s best known golf gem. Visitors can putt where the pros have played in a challenging course sprawling over 6,700 yards of prime Miami real estate, featuring 27 distinct holes par 72. Elegantly captured in their tribal logo’s spherical design, for Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the best journeys are the ones that take you full circle. From Everglades adventures to world-class gaming and putting like a pro in some of the greenest acres in Miami, the Tribe has become South Florida’s portal to timeless traditions and heritage, captivating live events, world-class gaming, and year-round entertainment for visitors the world over.

Here’s a taste of trivia that thrills:

The Tribe’s acclaim as a sovereign nation and unbending stewardship of the Florida Everglades – a threatened ecosystem unique the world over – has led to several successful enterprises in the heart of South Florida, fast-becoming celebrated cultural and entertainment destinations. Here, travellers can find adventure, the unexpected, and the unexplored.

Located in Central Florida in Orange County the city of Orlando attracts over 50 million visitors annually. The City is the most visited place in the United States, thanks to its numerous theme parks and attractions. From the Walt Disney World Resort to Universal Orlando, home of Universal Studios and Sea World, there are enough attractions to keep a family busy for 67 days. That’s why it is important to plan your trip

with military precision otherwise a missed opportunity to lunch with Mickey Mouse could haunt you for years.

Orlando attracts people of all ages and walks of life, from young couples to families and retirees. Besides the theme parks your Orlando experience can include sports, outdoor adventure, world class shopping and dining, live music and culture. There are multiple flights from the UK daily, making Orlando highly accessible whether for a pop in business visit or a multi week leisure stay.

There is a lot to explore in the City and several neighbourhoods of particular interest including a Brazilian area which houses Festival Bay Mall. Thornton Park is one of downtown Orlando’s most charming neighbourhoods with renovated bungalows and historic Tudor homes all within walking distance to fine dining and boutique shops. No area attracts more visitors than Winter Park in downtown Orlando. Once a major citrus growing region Winter Park was a popular retreat for holiday makers in the North who travelled South by train in the late 1800’s. Take a stroll through the beautiful rose gardens in Central Park whilst walking under a canopy of oaks providing shade through downtown.

With blue skies all year round, Orlando is a paradise for adventure enthusiasts. The greater Orlando area has over two thousands lakes, rivers and streams perfect for watersports such as fishing, kayaking and jet skiing. Big Tree Park just outside of Orlando is a haven for mountain bikers while also providing excellent trails for hiking and zip-lining. This is another reason why so many visitors choose to make Orlando their second home, the activities and weather are great provokers for visitors from all over.

Besides the many out-door activities and theme parks, the other biggest tourist attractions is shopping. In fact within 15 miles there is enough retail space to fill 900 football pitches. Between the high end boutiques featuring designer labels and the fabulous ‘outlet malls’ which offer well known labels at discount prices, shopping in Orlando is more than a one day event. Be sure to check out Mall at Millenia for Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Tory Burch and Chanel. While Orlando Premium Outlets is home to 150 upscale outlet stores such as CH Carolina Herrera, Roberto Cavalli, Salvatore Ferragamo, Burberry, and Prada.

Orlando is often called “home of the Golf industry” not least be-cause Tiger Woods and Ernie Els make the city home. The city is also home to the Golf Channel and Golf Week magazine, plays host to major tournaments, and currently has 176 private and semi-public golf courses in operation. This is definitely a unique city for the golf enthusiasts. High end golf resorts like the Wal-dorf Astoria and Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Resort, blend fun with decadence truly changing your opinion of the “Disney Experience.” Orlando caters to all types of visitors.

There is probably no better location in the world for a multi-gen-erational family holiday to keep everyone happy and build lasting memories. The magic of Disney has turned into the magic of Or-lando, the city that brings a smile and an experience to boot.

Walt Disney WorldWalt Disney World, king of theme park resorts, is a massive complex that can take planning and expertise to navigate smoothly. Here are the basics: There are 4 theme parks at Walt Disney World - The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Start by steeping yourself in vintage Disney, visit the Magic Kingdom. That’s where you’ll find the classics including; Cinderella’s Castle, It’s a Small World and the Haunted Mansion.

Sea WorldThis aquatic theme park is perhaps best known for its live show featuring mascot Shamu, but recent expansions have created an awesome interactive, high-tech marine playground. One of Sea-World’s newest additions, Turtle Trek, is a 360-degree, 3-D movie that takes guests through the hidden world of Nyah, a deep sea turtle hatchling. The Kraken and Manta roller coasters dangle and fly guests over the park, but it’s the live shows that put this park on the map. Get personal with penguins, sharks, dolphins, flamingos and pelicans, among others.

Universal StudiosTo see all your favorite television and film characters live in ac-tion including Bart Simpson and Harry Potter, Universal Studios is a must for the itinerary. Experience thrilling rides, like the new Transformers the Ride - 3D - An epic battle between Autobots and Decepticons. January 24-26 2014 Universal celebrates all of Harry’s adventures at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. From interactive experiences to appearances by select cast members and more, this exciting event will be three days of unforgettable fun for all ages, set against the backdrop of two amazing theme parks.

La Nouba, the third resident show created by Cirque du Soleil, after Mystère and “O” in Las Vegas and the first in partnership with Disney, continues to inspire dreams 15 years after its premiere in December 1998. A collision

of the frightening and the familiar, the Orlando, Florida-based show challenges the audience to draw upon a childlike imagination to overcome the ordinary. Meaning “to live it up” from the French phrase faire la nouba, the bright, fluorescent colours of the Cirques (circus people) set the stage for a magical party. Funambulists (tightrope walkers), tum-blers, trapeze performers, musicians and circus artists, among other performers, bring these costumes to life. The ward-robe department handles more than 800 costumes and headpieces every day. The Le Con getup alone requires 600 rhinestones that are applied by hand. Most artists wear three different costumes per show. Keeping those outfits intact is crucial with all the acrobatics throughout the show. Fast-paced and dizzying, the PowerTrack Trampoline scene keeps audience members on the edge of their seats. In 7 minutes, 30 seconds, there are 394 flips and 62 twists. That’s 2.8 million flips since the show started! Another milestone since the show’s inception is from trampoline artist Alexander Da-nilchenko, who hasn’t missed a single performance. Danilchenko helps make up a 65-member cast that represents 14 different countries. Another star of the show, the little train used by the im-aginary frog, has travelled 285 miles. With a 1,671-seat theatre, the first freestanding permanent structure ever built for Cirque du Soleil, La Nouba looks forward to another 15 fantastic years.

What is your favourite act in La Nouba?

“PowerTrack, of course. When I first saw the show in 2004, I wanted to be part of the action and now having performed in it for five years it is still an incredible feeling every night.”

What did you do before joining La Nouba?

“I grew up in a gym with two parents that coached gymnastics and I have them to thank for the wonderful opportunities I’ve had. I loved competing in an acrobatic

sport because the adrenalin rush was there every day for training. The base I had in sport made it an easier transfer into the world of Cirque. I would not be performing like this without my acrobatic background.

How does it feel to celebrate the 15th Anniversary?

“Fifteen years ago I would have never thought that this is where I would be today. It is such a thrill to be involved in a special show like this with so many wonderful and talented people. I’m very proud that the show has been going strong for fifteen years and I’m very excited to be celebrating with people that have actually been working and performing here for fifteen years.”By Jessi C.

Meet Claire WrightLa Nouba PowerTrack since 2008Hometown: Sandhurst, UK

Florida’s Gulf Coast is a special place, with history, culture, mile wide white sand beaches and lots of hidden treasures. St. Petersburg for example is home to the second largest Salvador Dali museum in the world, the largest being in Spain. Whereas neighbouring Sarasota is home to Siesta Key rated one of the top beaches in America on a regular basis. Nearby just off the shores

of Bradenton lies Anna Maria Island, having successfully resisted commercial development the island is a throwback to the old days of Florida. The fact that these cities are all within an hour long drive of each other makes for adventure filled holiday exploring unique artist’s villages, unoccupied beaches, and lots of Gulf dining. The Floridian hospitality is ever-present on the Gulf Coast, more so than its Atlantic neighbour. The cedar trees with their web of Spanish moss really impose themselves and provide a great backdrop to the warm Southern charm. This is particularly true in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area where well maintained Victorian houses line the streets; a downtown area right on a magnificent harbour is just one of the attractions worth noting. But most visitors come to St. Pete, as it is affectionately known, to see the work of Salvador Dali, a one-time friend of a couple from St. Pete’s; Renold Morse and his wife Eleanor. The Morse collection, obtained over a long friendship with Dali and his wife Gala, includes 96 oil paintings, many original drawings, bookworks, prints, sculpture, photos, manuscripts, and an extensive archive of documents. The museum, built by famed architect Yann Weymouth, truly blends the rational with the fantastical, and is a piece of art within itself. After a surreal experience in St. Pete, Sarasota will only build on the taste of culture. Sarasota is home to the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. For the circus fans, yes that is the founder of Ringling Brothers Circus. Easily the crown jewel in the Sarasota arts scene, the collection of Baroque masterpieces, not too mention Ringling’s Gothic Mansion, is an afternoon well spent. Sarasota is also home to a thriving ballet, theatre, several music festivals, and an orchestra. These are just some of the reasons so many retired art lovers move to Sarasota. The other reason typically has to do with

sand, surf, fine dining, a thriving local artist’s colony, and Siesta Key. A barrier Island off the coast of Sarasota and the cities ‘gateway’ to the Gulf, Siesta Key is an untarnished gem. On the East side of the Key, boats can explore mangrove trees while on the West side of the Island, expansive open white sandy beaches provide the perfect backdrop for a good frolicking. Rent an upscale beach cottage and spend a few days soaking up the culture of the Gulf Coast, by the end of your holiday you’ll be able to throw the best barbecue ever, we promise! Besides the numerous tennis, football, swimming, and rowing stars, America grooms in Bradenton, this once upon a time orange growing county is known for its laid back art scene and luxurious neighbourhoods. The Riverwalk is great for strolls at sunrise and sunset and is dotted with restaurants and antique shops. The area also boasts its own art scene with Village of the Arts, a collection of beachside bungalows transformed into open galleries. Anna Maria Island just off the coast of Bradenton is consistently rated as one of the best islands in the US. Continuing the tradition of Florida charm Anna Maria is laid back yet sophisticated. Although one of the best restaurants on island Beach Bistro does recommend wearing your best Hawaiian shirt. Before you leave the Gulf Coast make sure to order the grouper. Red, Yellowfin, Black, or Marbled no one does grouper like the establishments of the Gulf Coast. Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill in Clearwater sets the tone with their own grouper fishing fleet and their signature grouper sandwich invented on site. No matter what time of year, the Gulf Coast provides Southern charm on a breath-taking coastline.

Beach Combing in Style

Delray Beach - Family FunTouting some of the best beaches in the United States, Delray Beach attracts beachgoers from near and far to its stun-ning coastline. Annually, nearly 1 million visitors flock to this family-friendly 2-mile-long beach ideal for sunbathing, swimming and building sand-castles. The funky and arty downtown beach area has terrific res-taurants and shopping. When the sun goes down, visitors can take a stroll on festive Atlantic Avenue and enjoy the boutiques, seafood restaurants, cool architecture and the Pineapple Grove Arts District.

Clearwater Beach - ActionWith its pristine white sand beaches, clear gulf waters, warm sunshine, and plenty of hospitality Clearwater Beach has earned a reputation as one of America’s finest beaches and has lured countless families and couples to its broad, sandy shores and beachfront hotels. Situated on a 3-mile stretch of the Pinellas Peninsula on the Gulf Coast, Clearwater Beach spans the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico to the west, and tranquil Tampa Bay to the east. Clearwater Beach’s inviting atmosphere and close proximity to Tampa and Orlando means this high-action beach is an ideal getaway for those looking to escape the chaotic theme parks of Orlando. Visitors can take in the sun on white sandy beach-es, dive into a game of beach volleyball, rent a fishing boat, take a dolphin-watch-ing cruise, parasail or head to a mainland museum or aquarium.

South Beach - Party SceneSouth Beach, located on Miami Beach is well known for its glitz and glamour, non-stop nightlife, sandy shores, unique Art Deco architecture and beautiful people. The long, man-made beach stretches up the Atlantic for miles and is perfect for early morning runs, topless sunbathing, enjoying motorboats in the water and people watching. Still the place to see and be seen, South Beach is where you’ll find cosmetic beach beauties, models doing beachside photoshoots, health buffs and

sun worshippers doing squats and drinking wheat-grass shots, and anything else that money can buy. If you get peckish head to the area’s famous Ocean Drive which runs along the sand and is brimming with side-walk cafes and bars often filled with people from sunrise to last call at 4 a.m.

Siesta Key - Building Sand-CastlesThe striking white sands of Siesta Key in Sarasota are made up of 99 per cent white quartz, which makes for an amazingly beautiful beach that is family-friendly and full of picturesque views. Beach lovers flock to these silky shores to take advan-tage of the wide expanse of sand and the tranquil gulf waters. The extra white sands keep the beachfront particularly cool on a hot day, which makes for a great spot for sandcastle building with the kids or beach sports with friends. If you are in search for more active pursuits rent a catamaran or kayak from one of the many beach con-cessionaires. This perfect family vaca-tion venue, boasts beachside picnic areas and playgrounds and cosy rental cottages nearby.

Sanibel Island - Collecting ShellsLocated along the Gulf of Mexico, just a short drive from Fort Myers, Sanibel Island is justly famed for its mesmerising sunsets and luxurious resorts and of course shell-ing. Some 200 species of seashells can be found covering the beach of Sanibel Island. Enthusiasts can be seen scouring the shoreline for shells and conches. The nearby Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum has specimens from all over the world and is a handy place to identify the ones you’ve picked up on the shore. Sanibel Island is particularly picturesque compared with some of the other beach areas because it is not as commercialised due to restric-tions against tall buildings and is ideal for swimming as motorboats are prohibited within 300 yards of shore. On non-beach days, visitors can opt to take a peaceful walk or bike ride through the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge or enjoy the waters via kayak or canoe.

With nearly 663 miles of beaches and year round sunshine, Florida is the ideal destination for beach lovers worldwide. Many of Florida’s white sand beaches and crystal blue waters rival some of the best in the world. From the Atlantic Coast to the Gulf Coast, the diversity of Florida’s beaches offers a wide range of experiences from calm and secluded to action-packed. With remote island getaways, big city beaches and family-friendly shores perfect for shelling and building sand-castles, Florida promises a

beach for every visitor. So what are you waiting for? Slap on the sunscreen and get ready to take advantage of the Sunshine State’s surf, sun and sand at these 5 amazing locations:

ISLAND HOPPING IN THE KEYS

they are truly some of Florida’s best. Heading out from The Moorings Village early the next morning simply turn left, no seriously those are the directions. The Overseas Highway’s next major stop is Marathon, another sleepy fishing town anchored in maritime history. If too many boat drinks are consumed out on the water make a stopover at Tranquility Bay Hotel, the Butterfly Café will certainly entice with the freshest grouper in Florida and mouth-wateringly delicious Key Lime Pie.

Next stop Key West; the wacky and wild cruise ship destination where America and Florida ends or begins depending on the direction you are coming from. Key West is vibrant and culturally intriguing at the same time, Duval Street and the corresponding side streets cater to all types. This is where drunken stag parties meet families, retirees dance with glow sticks, and the world generally seems upside down. One end of Duval marks the fact that the island sits just 90 miles from Cuba, while at the other end pandemonium takes place nightly at the dance clubs and

live music venue. When you are ready to get some shut eye, head to Parrot Key Hotel for waterfront luxury close to the action but far enough to give you that Island feel. This hidden paradise caters to modern day travellers who prefer a mix of style, comfort, and craziness.

For an afternoon of culture and history visit The Hemingway House, the number one tourist attraction in Key West. Ernest’s lifestyle in Key West is legendary. He wrote well, drank hard, was a game fishing enthusiast, and had a great love for boxing. He transitioned from his second to third wife after a not so chance encounter at Sloppy Joe’s bar, the current site of Captain Tony’s on Greene Street. The Keys has all kinds of holidays from fishing trips to treasure hunting expeditions, from hammocks on the beach to rum punches in the bar, there is a lot to explore. Like many places in Florida the age group really doesn’t matter, although a love for sun, sand, and luxury does. The Florida Keys allows travellers to escape, change conversation, and live the island lifestyle with a bit of soul and flavour.

Just a one hour drive from Miami International Airport you will discover yourself in a completely different universe. The hustle and bustle of Florida’s vibrant, intoxicating city will quickly turn into a Jimmy Buffet esque experience, but instead of cheeseburgers in paradise opt for the fresh crab and fish.

The Florida Keys encompasses a total land area of 137.3 square miles (356 sq km) and there are over 1700 islands in the archipelago but very few are populated. With 4 main cities, one highway, and 42 bridges, hundreds of beach bars, countless fishing holes, and a lot of sunshine the Keys can be best described as a haven for the free spirited. Once a pirate area, than a drug smugglers playground, the Keys today offers luxury hotels with one of a kind spas and fabulous restaurants.

Start the adventure in Key Largo, but don’t stop there, the Keys are worth exploring one drink at a time. About halfway down the Overseas Highway a sun soaked traveller enters

Islamorada. Dubbed the ‘sport fishing’ capital of the world, this seaside village is more luxury than campfire. Known as the place where the trendsetters of Miami come to get away, Islamorada is tranquil, beautiful, and downright quiet. The Cheeca Lodge & Spa, with a history of accommodating America’s elite families, offers casual elegance with ocean views. The spa caters to over-indulgence, with massage treatments that will leave your skin feeling like that of a two year old.

For a more private, secluded holiday stay right down the road at The Moorings Village. This upscale resort offers one, two, and three bedroom cottages great for families or couples seeking to unwind in a truly unique destination. Walk out onto the patio with a clear view to the sea with the only obstruction being a few curving palm trees. Paddle-boat and snorkel by day then walk 20 feet to your cottage where hotel staff have already started your private barbecue. The Moorings Village embodies the feel of Islamorada in its relaxed yet luxurious atmosphere. Make sure you catch the spectacular sunsets,
