THE CITY OF uMHLATHUZE

The City of uMhlathuze is made up of Richards Bay, Empangeni, eSikhaleni, Port Durnford, Vulindlela, Felixton, eNseleni and Ngwelezane, as well as the rural areas under Inkosi uDube, Inkosi uMkhwanazi, Inkosi uKhoza and Inkosi uZungu. uMhlathuze assumed city status on 21 August 2001. The name uMhlathuze is derived from the uMhlathuze River that meanders through the municipal area and unifies these towns, suburbs and traditional areas symbolically.

With a population of approximately 350 000, uMhlathuze is situated 180km North East of Durban on the coast.

The City of uMhlathuze is rich in diversity and is the ideal holiday destination where nature lovers can explore the internationally acclaimed game reserves and visit the spectacular wetlands. Outdoor and sporting enthusiasts can take advantage of the sub-tropical climate and endless beaches and cultural heritage seekers can visit Zulu Cultural Villages, museums and markets.

How To Get There

BY AIR: The nearest commercial airport is the Richards Bay Airport. SA Express 035-786 0301 conduct daily flights between Richards Bay and Johannesburg. Empangeni has an air- field.

BY ROAD: The two main feeder roads to Empangeni and Richards Bay are the N2 highway from Durban (South) and Pongola (North) and the R34 from Vryheid and Melmoth (West). The condition of the roads range from above average to adequate and road signage is in accordance with international codes. The Greyhound Bus 035-772 2090 runs between Empangeni, Richards Bay and most major centres.

BY SEA: Richards Bay is the first port of call with world-class facilities for vessels. The Zululand Yacht Club 035-788 0256 and the Tuzi Gazi Moorings 035-788 0031 cater for the international yachting fraternity.

Climate

Climate conditions are typically sub-tropical to tropical. The average daily temperature in summer is 28oC and in winter 24oC (Empangeni) and 22°C (Richards Bay). The humidity levels tend to be very high and the annual rainfall is 1100mm (Empangeni) and 1200mm (Richards Bay).

Richards Bay:Boardwalk (Inkwazi Mall) - Operating hours are usually from 09:00 to 18:00 on Monday to Thursday, 09:00 to 19:00 on Fridays, 09:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 to 15:00 on a Sunday.

Empangeni:Sanlam Centre - Operating hours are 08:00 to 17:00 Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 14:00 Saturday and 09:00 to 13:00 on a Sunday.

EMPANGENI

Empangeni was established as a Norwegian Mission in 1841 and has flourished to become the commercial and agricultural centre of the City of uMhlathuze, occupying 13% of the total 796sq/km municipal area.

According to folklore the name Empangeni was derived from the Zulu word ‘phanga’ (which means grabbed), as a result of the many crocodile attacks on water bearers and visitors to the nearby crocodile infested stream eMpangeni. Another version of the origin of the name of the Town is that it is derived from the Mpange trees (Olinia radiata), which grow on the banks of the Empangeni River.


RICHARDS BAY

Richards Bay is considered to be the industrial and tourism centre of the area and occupies 37% of the total 796sq/km municipal area.

Richards Bay began its existence as a small fishing town and flourished with the development of the Port of Richards Bay, the country’s deepest and largest port, in 1976. It has been earmarked by the Government as one of the country’s growth and development points, and through the Industrial Development Zone initiative (IDZ) will attract a great deal of investment. Richards Bay is already home to some of the country’s most productive and lucrative industries.

eSIKHALENI

This is the City’s home of the ‘ekasie’ (township) culture. It is adorned with one of the most pristine features of nature, Icubu Lake. It is also home to the King Cetshwayo Monument at the place where King Cetshwayo boarded the ship when he was being exiled to England, after a defeat of amaZulu at the battle of Ulundi in 1879. eSikhaleni also boasts top class taverns and accommodation facilities that provide the best entertainment. VULINDELA

The area of Vulindlela is home of one of the academic institutions in the African continent, the University of Zululand. It is the only comprehensive institution of higher learning north of the uThukela River. It has always strived in producing graduates with high-level knowledge and skills. Currently, it is experiencing an increased intake of students from other parts of Africa, especially from Namibia, Nigeria, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland. Tel- 035-902 6000


WHAT TO DO AND SEE LEISURE Beaches

The warm Indian Ocean beaches are ideal for swimming, surfing, yachting, kayaking and most other water sports. Alkantstrand and Newark Beaches are protected by shark-nets, and have lifeguards on duty. Facilities include picnic spots, braai area and fishing. Beach Manager 035-753 2496

NATURE

Birding

Richards Bay arguably rates as one of the BEST URBAN birding experiences in the country. With a wide variety of areas to visit, affordable local guides, bird hides and boardwalks, Richards Bay offers amazing opportunities to get out there and enjoy what nature has to offer!

Over 350 species occur in the immediate Richards Bay area; 73% of South Africa's red data book species and 24 National Rarities have been recorded from the Richards Bay area.

Within Richards Bay is the Thulasihleka Pan, probably the most reliable site for spotting Lesser Jacanas in South Africa as well as enough variety of water birds to keep you busy for most of the morning, including huge flocks of pelicans, Spoonbills and unusual species such as Baillon’s Crake, African Marsh Harrier and Brown-Throated Weaver. There is also an excellent network of walking trails and hides at the pan that are a must for any birder or outdoor enthusiast in the area. Guided walks are offered.

The Southern Sanctuary (Important Bird Area SA079) and Harbour area have also long been hotspots for rarities in South Africa such as Crab Plover and Broadbilled Sandpiper. According to leading ornithologist Dave Allen, from the Natural History Museum in Durban, this is some of the best “water birding” in southern Africa.

Less than an hour’s drive from Richards Bay is South Africa's most exciting forest birding area - Ongoye Forest with its Green Barbet, Eastern Bronze Naped Pigeons, Green Twinspots, Brown Robin, Yellow-Streaked Greenbuls as well as its host of endemic plants. Nseleni Nature Reserve is also a beautiful little reserve where boat trips can be arranged to see Whitebacked Night Heron and African Finfoot.

Dolphin Viewing Platform

Situated at the end of the North Breakwater Pier at Alkantstrand Beach, this specially erected platform allows visitors to view the Humpback Dolphins that frequent the Richards Bay coastline.

Enseleni Nature Reserve

Situated 15 minute’s drive from Richards Bay on the N2 towards Empangeni, visitors are welcome to enjoy the picnic / braai sites and self-guided nature walks. Entrance is free. There are two different walks:• The Nkonkoni Trail - 7km • The Mvubu Trail - 3km

A variety of small mammals and an abundance of bird life can be seen. A conference / activity centre is available to educational groups and other interested parties.

Lake Mzingazi

This 944ha freshwater natural lake is the source of Richards Bay’s water. It is home to an abundance of hippos and crocodiles and is the favoured feeding place of the Fish Eagles for which the town is renowned. Empangeni Art & Cultural Museum

The Empangeni Museum is housed in the old Town Hall (1916). Here, visitors can view exhibits on Zulu culture, the Sugar Pioneers as well as contemporary art. TOURIST DESTINATION

Richards Bay’s resounding success is owed to thoughtful town planning and stringent nature conservation principles. This has ensured that industry, tourism and nature co-exist in harmony. The town and its surrounds have vast expanses of untouched indigenous vegetation and many natural lakes and marshes, making it one of the most picturesque tourist destinations in the country. The town boasts an abundance of wildlife including leopards, hippos, crocodiles and monkeys. Over 300 species of birds can be spotted in and around town, making it a bird watcher’s paradise. Humpback dolphins and whales frequent the Richards Bay waters and can be viewed from a specially erected viewing platform at Alkantstrand Beach. The Enseleni Nature Reserve, which is home to wildebeest, zebra, reedbuck and other small mammals, offers hiking

trails that take visitors through the Zululand bushveld and along the banks of the Nseleni River.

Richards Bay is a sporting enthusiast’s haven. The year-round summer and warm Indian Ocean make an ideal training environment. The protected beaches, the Tuzi Gazi Waterfront and the bay area serve as a water sport playground. Over weekends a vibrant buzz echoes along the shores as all kinds of vessels take to the water providing pleasant entertainment for those basking in the sun or relaxing in the cool shade of the Casuarina trees where local joggers, walkers and cyclists zooming about are common phenomena. A golf course estate is at present being developed at the 18 hole golf course. The breath taking scenery and unexpected visits from hippos, crocodiles, monkeys and fish eagles complement this challenging course.

For those who prefer working out indoors there is a fully equipped modern franchised health gym. The numerous public swimming pools are ideal for serious training or simply for cooling down.

A large variety of shops in the central business district offer all of the modern day conveniences and services that we all take for granted. Businesses are always prepared to go the extra mile and visitors can look forward to excellent friendly service.

For a peace of mind come and enjoy your holiday, business trip at home away from home. We have 17 rooms-ensuite with a bar fridge, tv and dstv and they are all fully airconditioned. A fully licenced “Big 5” theme bar is available with pool table and a Big screen Tv for your entertainment. We have the gym area with a sauna. Braais are set up on request around the pool area. Secure parking, remote controlled gates to protect your vehicles. Chef is available to make you mouth watering dinners.

In the morning enjoy a mouth watering English Breakfast. After a hard day com home, kick off your shoes and relax by the pool. Situated 15minutes drive from Richards Bay is Enseleni Natural Reserve which offers birdlife and a range of African game while our anglers have a choice of fishing and surfing

For sportmen and woman there is a Country club within 5minutes from the Guesthouse which offers Bowls, Tennis Squash and Golf. A 10 minute drive will bring you to the CBD where there are cinemas, shopping centre and Hospital. Our town has great expectations of variety of crafters and many places to view around just ask the reception and will assist you with maps and brochures.
