Back story: My son Zeke is ten years old and

is one of the joys of my life. He is ahard worker with an amazingly goodattitude. Zeke is compassionate, kindand sincerely wants to please by help-ing and doing the right thing. He iskind to everyone he meets and smilesall the time.

At three, he started speech andoccupational therapy, which was rec-ommended by his pediatrician and hispreschool, and he tested within thenormal limits of both.

At five, he started to read, so in-stead of another year of preschool, wewanted him to be challenged and hadhim attend Kindergarten – he ex-celled!

At six, his first grade teacher (with15 years of experience) suspected hewas not producing work commensu-rate with the amount of effort he pro-

vided, stating, “He’s doing fine, butthere is something there. He is sosmart and he works so hard, but thereis something there that we are missingand I can’t figure out what it is.”

At seven, his second gradeteacher, who has never met or com-municated with his previous teacher, shared the same sentiment. She stated,“On a scale from 1-10 he is as smart asa 10 and works as hard as a 10, but heproduces work at a five. I don’t knowwhy, but he is working harder than heshould have to and is not producingthe work that he is capable of men-tally.”

I saw it. Homework was takinghim a really long time and spellingwords became brutal for him. He was-n’t distracted and he wasn’t lazy. Zekewas working hard, yet not getting a lotdone. In all of his written work, letterswere backwards. I would point out tohim a backwards letter and he woulderase it and write it the exact same way.He understood the concepts and got

the ideas, but he just couldn’t getthrough his homework. Even at homehe was a hard worker, yet he wouldfrequently forget instructions and haveto check a chart several times a day forsequences in a daily routine.

At eight, he was still strugglingand was intimidated by kids his ownage. His outgoing, jovial personalitywas changing and he became timidand withdrawn. His confidence plum-meted. Homework that should’vetaken Zeke 15 minutes took him 1-1½ hours. His perception of himself, other kids and school changed and hestarted to have negative thoughts andtalk derogatively about himself. It wasnot going in a good direction andeverything was happening so quickly.

After a lot of paperwork, a lot ofmeetings and several observationsfrom two different school counselors, one counselor recommended that wetape a note to the top of his desk thatsaid, “Stay focused on your task untilit is finished.” I wanted to scream –

this addresses minor symptoms, notthe problem or the root cause of theproblem. All of his teachers now seethere is “something there” but theydon’t know what it is.

After testing Zeke’s vision, hestarted wearing glasses to school andstarted vision therapy sessions for anhour, twice a week for 6 months. Inaddition, Zeke worked half an hour toan hour of homework for vision ther-apy each day – there was no real suc-cess.

Next, he was diagnosed ADHDinattentive. Upon pediatrician recom-mendation, Zeke tried three differentmedications with no real success - justvarying side effects. He was pro-claimed to have, “dyslexic tendencies”and “showing evidence of Audio Pro-cessing Disorder.” There was no planto help him; no action items. Therewas nothing we could do. I know he isworking incredibly hard and has a pos-itive attitude I wish I had when deal-ing with difficulty.

My First Experience with BrainBalance

With a chip on my shoulder and abad attitude, I attended a Brain Bal-ance seminar with examples of Zeke’swork in hand. One paragraph of writ-ing that took him an hour to write in-cluded backwards letters in every wordand one word spelled four differentways. The information that was pre-sented sounded interesting, but at thistime there had been five different solu-tions in the form of diagnoses andtherapy that had not produced any realresults. Worse – we spent a lot ofmoney, time and effort for each.Worse still – Zeke has been aware and

involved in eachand his confi-dence and self es-teem are gettinglower at each at-tempt to helphim. He is stillstruggling and heknows it. Afterlooking at Zeke’swork, the directormade the follow-ing statements:“It looks like he isa hard worker. Ishe a people

pleaser? (Yes.) Does he have troublewith bowel movements? (Yes, but I amtaken back by this question.) Is heasthmatic? (Just that week, his pedia-trician said he was borderline asth-matic and gave us an inhaler.) I bet hehas allergies. (Yes, severe allergies.)How is his vision? (He wears glassesand went through vision therapy.) Ishe clumsy? (Yes.) Does he have sensi-tivity to noise? (Yes, sometimes heholds his hands over his ears at schoolassembly and gets off the bus almost intears because it is so loud.) Are multi-tasks hard for him? (Yes.)” He has myattention. He is completely accuratewithout ever meeting Zeke. Then he

said the statement that changed mymind completely – “I know what thisis, and I can help him.” In six yearsnot one person was willing to say this.I started to cry. I talked it over withmy husband (who was in Afghanistanon assignment) and we decided – weare going to do the program; but thisis THE LAST thing we are going todo before we stop trying to fix what-ever this is and accept it for what it is.If this is a struggle our son will havefor the rest of his life, our challenge asparents will be to help him find hisway successfully.

The Staff at Brain Balance Zeke was exposed to four people,

three times a week that were, and stillare, intensely focused and passionateabout Zeke’s success. A constantsource of encouragement, the staffcares not just about Zeke, but aboutour other children and our family. The staff at Brain Balance counseledand encouraged me during times offrustration and fear. Every day wewere there for the appointments, someone would come out to thewaiting room and talk with our fam-ily. On more than one occasion, thedirector pulled me into the office totalk privately about my concerns. Iappreciate the time, effort and caringeveryone on staff at Brain Balanceshowed to our family. It is obviousthis is an office wanting to help kidsand their families succeed – in moreways than academically. They cele-brated each success with us and en-couraged and challenged Zeke.

Our ResultsZeke is no longer on the ADHD

scale. He no longer has letter reversalsin his writing and no longer showsany evidence of Dyslexia. Zeke nolonger shows any evidence of AudioProcessing Disorder – I didn’t know

this was even a possible outcome. This program has changed Zeke’s life, the life of our family and the dynamicbetween Zeke and his brothers. I nolonger worry or have anxiety overZeke’s academic life. We started theprogram just before he started 3rdgrade (again) in fall 2011. Zeke was agood reader, but preferred bookslower than his level of reading – 2ndgrade level books. He ended the yearwith a book report on his favoritebook – an 8th grade level book. Hestarted off the year really strugglingwith writing. His first writing earneda 1 from the school district writingassignment. One is considered firstgrade level. His final writing of theyear was a 4 – fourth grade level. Italked with his teacher frequently tosee how he was doing in the class so-cially and emotionally. What do otherkids think of him? What does he thinkof himself? He is well liked in classand is considered one of the “smartkids.” He often finishes assignmentsfirst. His grades in math and scienceare consistently in the top of the class. His entire academic life and outlookhave changed in one year. In the be-ginning of the year, Zeke was ascared, defeated boy; afraid he wasstupid. I could see it even in hisschool pictures and how he related toother kids. Now, he is a happy, confi-dent kid who loves school. He is soproud of his grades and the work hedoes. I love that he smiles all thetime again.

The Gathering Place is a bright, beautifully decorated new familyrestaurant that gathers more than justthe good people of Lutz and beyond. In fact, this unique and family-friendlyeatery gathers local ingredients for itsimpressive menu including local beef, pork, produce, and even beer to servesome of the freshest food in town.

Owned by Mother/Son team,Sandy and Chris Fuller, The GatheringPlace is located on N. Florida Avenuejust minutes from Land O’ Lakes andTampa. This fresh and inviting restau-rant opened its doors in March of thisyear, and has drawn people back againand again for their specialty wood-fired pizzas, tapas, unique entrées andmore.

When the Fullers opened TheGathering Place, they were passionateabout creating a menu that was fresh, local and delicious. They wanted tosupport the local farms, producestands and businesses while creating afriendly atmosphere for people tomeet, eat and enjoy. They succeededin doing so and created a restaurantthat offers indoor or outdoor seating,a locally stocked bar, a wood-fire pizzaoven, live entertainment, a semi-pri-vate lounge and more.

The Fullers have put their heartsinto The Gathering Place, and have al-ways wanted to have their own restau-rant. Sandy actually owns her owndessert catering business called Sandy’sDrunken Cakes and has made herscrumptious liquor and rum cakes forrestaurants all over the bay area. Chrishas been in the restaurant business formany years and took this opportunityto open a place that he and his familyare passionate about. Together, this is

their first family endeavorand the fact that therestaurant is family-owned translatesin the little de-tails, the personalattention by thestaff, and thequality and tasteof the food. Work-ing together withtheir chef Mike Web-ster, the menu has beencarefully crafted to surpriseand impress a variety of tastes.

The Gathering Place is open forlunch and for dinner and the menukicks things off with some reallyunique appetizers and tapas. For ex-ample, their most popular starter is theCuban Nachos, which are crispy plan-tains topped with their all naturalpulled pork, black bean and corn salsaand served with a drizzling of mojosour cream sauce.

Another favorite item on the tapaslist is the Gator Bombs. Welcome toFlorida! Gator Bombs are made withchipotle and the tender gator tail isfinely chopped and stuffed into pep-padews with a secret cheese sauce andthen beer battered. Other options in-clude Crab Cakes, Bacon and BeerCheese Fries, Chicken Wings, ConchFritters and more.

If you are interested in soups andsalads, The Gathering Place has a lotof offerings. In addition to a soup ofthe day, their menu offers a LoadedPotato soup, and a “Rainbow Stew”which is made with local summer veg-gies and a seasoned vegetable broth. There are five salad options including adelicious salad named HeirloomTomato Caprese, as well as a Greeksalad, a Shrimp and Spinach salad, a

Smoked Chicken saladand even a “Skinny

Caesar” salad. If you like

pizza, then youwon’t want tomiss The Gath-ering Place’swood-fired piz-

zas. Homemadedough flies

through the air bythe wood burning oven,

and then the pizza chefs addthe ingredients that make the pizza sosuccessful. Customers enjoy eatingtheir pizzas fresh from the oven. Aperfect blend between crispy andchewy, their pizza menu offers a myr-iad of choices, including some of theirspecialty pies. Their Taco Pizza is com-pletely unique and is topped with cornand black bean salsa, mozzarella andcheddar cheese, taco meat, jalapenos, black olives and sour cream. As tasty toeat as it is to look at, you can expectthe table next to you to want to orderone too.

In addition to favorites like theMargherita and Pizza Blanca pizzas, they also offer a Greek pizza they callthe Aphrodite, which is made withmarinara, Kalamata olives, feta cheese, mozzarella, red onion, green pepperand rosemary. There’s also a locallynamed pizza called “Lutz Boy,” whichis a nod to the great BBQ in the area, made with house smoked chicken,BBQ sauce, drunken caramelizedonions (beer soaked!) and mozzarella. The sky is the limit, because of courseyou can build your own.

Sandy says, “My favorite is the‘Pizza Verde,’ but we have a lot moreon our menu than pizzas. We havegreat sandwiches and entrees too.”

The lunch menu displays a varietyof excellent sandwich offerings includ-ing a fresh grouper sandwich, a “MojoPulled Pork” sandwich, a “Free RangeBurger” made with organic grass-fedbeef, a Reuben, a Cuban and more. Also on the lunch menu is a “Pick 2”special between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.where customers can receive half asandwich and half a salad or a cup ofhomemade soup.

The dinner menu ramps it upwith entrées to please every memberof the family. These dishes offer excel-lent portions at affordable prices in avariety of styles including Italian fa-vorites like Lasagna, Mushroom Ravi-oli, Seafood Paella Risotto andRosemary Parmesan Crusted PorkChops. Charles Holloway and JerryMuncey are men who clearly have noproblems getting down and dirty. Itcomes with the job. Charles and hiswife Donna, and their nephew andbusiness partner Jerry Muncey areused to it. They run the Lake FrontBeach Cleaning business in Odessaand do work all over the Tampa Bayarea, cleaning out lakes, ponds andswamps using numerous techniques tomake the areas cleaner for beachfronthomeowners, as well as swimmers whowant to swim in clear waters.

The work that Charles Hollowayand Jerry Muncey do isn’t easy, con-

sidering some of these lakefront prop-erties have been overgrown with vege-tation for many years. It takes a lot ofhard work to remove excess vegetationto get lakes and ponds back to the nat-ural white sand bottom. There is nolakefront beach or pond cleaning jobthat is too big or too small for LakeFront Beach Cleaning – a companythat prides itself on earning and keep-ing a stellar reputation over the past33 years.

The Holloways started their busi-ness in 1979. Longtime Tampa-arearesidents, they came up with the ideato clean out the lakes and ponds in thearea when they transformed their ownproperty, located on Lake Alice, into a

beautiful oasis. Donna explains, “Ourown beach was absolutely gorgeousand after cleaning our lakefront andmaking it into our own personal para-dise, we knew that there was a needfor this type of service in the area. Weturned these lakefront properties thatwe worked on into a paradise forswimmers. We have many, many veryvalued customers since 1979, and agreat number have been repeat cus-tomers.”

The concept was so new whenthe business started that the Tampaphone book didn’t even have any list-ings for pond cleaning, so they are thepioneers in that field.

“No one specialized in this serv-

ice, so we were the first,” says Charles.“We had to knock on doors just to ad-vertise. Showing them a before andafter photo book, we explained every-thing that we do, from cleaning thelakes and ponds along with weed con-trol. Word of mouth started to spreadquickly.”

The job itself can be tough andrequires a professional since it is illegalto use equipment to clean up thelakes. The Holloways have specialshovels and rakes and are able to getrid of unwanted roots one at a time.Sometimes Charles even has to go un-derwater to get rid of a root, but withspecialized tools, he gets the job done,no matter how long it takes.

annual newsletter and other many waysthat the staff at Wollinka & Wollinkakeeps people informed. The staff at thelaw firm is just as dedicated to helpingtheir clients as the attorneys, and theyall work together to maintain an excel-lent relationship.

Estate PlanningThis kind of law often requires a

long-term relationship that, like any re-lationship, is built on trust and under-standing. The attorneys of Wollinka &Wollinka are experienced in estate plan-ning, which includes creating wills, es-tablishing trusts, and drafting advanceddirectives and powers of attorney. Theirexperience in this area is invaluable andthey understand that preparing for peo-ple’s future in the event that something

happens to them isa very delicate mat-ter, but an impor-tant one.

Many of usdon’t have officialwills, and have notestablished trustsfor our children ormade tough deci-sions like who willbe in charge of ourfinancial and med-ical decisions if wewere to become in-capacitated. Many

of us also mistakenly believe that thiskind of preparation is reserved for theexcessively wealthy. While Wollinka &Wollinka is experienced in helpingwealthy clients, they are also experi-enced at helping the rest of us preparefor what must be looked at as the in-evitable. The important question reallyneeds to be asked: Who will take careof your children if you are incapaci-tated? Where will they stay in the in-terim? If you do not have a properlydrawn will and/or advanced directive, your children could needlessly getcaught up in the judicial system, whilecourt costs and attorney fees rise for thefamily.

Attorney Wollinka says, “Failure toestablish the right kind of documents

can result in 10 times that in courtcosts and attorney’s fees to institute aguardianship.” What could be moreimportant? That’s why Wollinka &Wollinka provides free consultations fortheir clients.

At Wollinka & Wollinka, there is avariety of affordable packages that canhelp their clients prepare for the future. They understand that there can be no“one-size-fits-all” plan for your family.Wollinka & Wollinka is experienced athelping you protect your assets by shar-ing strategies that help to limit estateand gift taxes, which can make a largeimpact on your family after a loved onedies.

Wollinka & Wollinka’s many yearsof experience have given them thecompassion that is so important whenworking with grieving families. Theyunderstand the emotions involved andcan administer an individual’s estatewith compassion. When someonepasses away, the person chosen to rep-resent the estate analyzes the assets anddebts. After debts are paid, the remain-ing assets are distributed to the benefi-ciaries. The attorneys at Wollinka &Wollinka know how to handle thesedelicate situations and work with fami-lies to make the process go as smoothlyas possible. If any problems arise, theyare ready to help iron them out.

Elder LawUnfortunately many of our senior

Considering the fact that your skinis your largest organ, and that it faces avariety of harsh conditions throughoutyour lifetime, it is important to knowwhere to turn for outstanding derma-tology care. Trinity Dermatology &Aesthetic Centre, located in the TrinityProfessional Place plaza at the corner ofTrinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. isdedicated to treating skin conditions ofall kinds including skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, rashes, wrinklesand more.

Patientswho come toTrinity Derma-tology & Aes-thetic Centre seeBrian T. John-son, M.D., aBoard CertifiedDermatologistwho has beentreating local pa-tients since heopened his firstpractice nearby in 1990. Since thattime he has built an impressive reputa-tion for truly listening to his patients, providing exceptional care, and gettingincredible results.

Dr. Johnson has been seeing pa-tients for more than 22 years at hisoriginal office, located on Grand Blvd.in the Richey Medical Center. Fouryears ago, in addition to his New PortRichey office, he opened Trinity Der-matology & Aesthetic Centre in Trinityto be more centrally located to themany surrounding communities, in-cluding East Lake, Lutz, Land O’Lakes and Tampa. On staff at the newMedical Center of Trinity as well asNorth Bay Hospital, Dr. Johnson is atrusted dermatologist in the commu-nity.

Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelorof Science degree and his Doctor ofMedicine degree from The Universityof Iowa, and completed four years ofresidency before moving to Florida.Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr.Johnson knew he wanted to be a doc-tor, but he never intended to be a der-matologist. “As a doctor [in residency]you rotate through all of the special-ties,” said Dr. Johnson, “I was im-pressed with the preciseness andexpertise that was required of dermatol-ogists. That’s when I knew that waswhat I wanted to do, and I find it veryrewarding.”

Together with his two CertifiedPhysician Assistants, Marijana Cejkovaand Tonya Terwilliger, Dr. Johnsontreats everything from skin cancer toacne and wrinkles. Dr. Johnson says,“We take the time to get to know ourpatients, and we listen to what theirconcerns are.”

In addition to medical treatmentsand medications, Jessica Banes-Pyles, aLicensed Paramedical Aesthetician whois affiliated with Dr. Johnson offers awide variety of skin care treatments, fa-cials, microdermabrasion, and chemicalpeels that will improve the appearanceof your skin.

Trinity Dermatology & AestheticCentre combines Dr. Johnson’s med-ical expertise with the many fantasticaesthetic treatment options that areavailable today for patients who want tolook and feel better about their skin.

Treating Acne to Wrinkles andEverything in Between

According to the CDC, skin can-cer is the most common form of cancerin the United States, and just like otherforms of cancer, it can be life threaten-ing. That is why it is so important tosee a qualified dermatologist, like Dr.Johnson, about anything on your body

that doesn’t look right. It’s criticallyimportant that people pay attention tochanges in their skin, changes in moles,or the appearance of anything thatwon’t heal. These could be signs ofcancer, and these skin changes don’t al-ways appear in places that receive sun-light! Skin cancer can appear anywhereon your body.

“Our goal is to treat cancer as sim-ply, easily and cheaply as possible,” saysDr. Johnson. “Prevention is our num-ber one focus, followed by early diag-nosis and treatment.”

In addition to traditional skin can-cer treatments, Dr. Johnson has a newstate-of-the-art piece of equipmentcalled the BLU-U. The BLU-U is aquick and affordable way to treat pre-cancerous Actinic Keratoses or AKs asthey are more commonly known. AKsare rough, scaly patches on the skincaused by too much exposure to thesun. Dr. Johnson also uses the BLU-Uto successfully treat other skin condi-tions like acne as well.

According to Dr. Johnson, 90 per-cent of teenagers get acne, and there’struly no reason to suffer with the manytopical and oral medical options thatare out there. Treatments now are sogood that they can often see a patientjust once as opposed to asking them tocome back again and again. “We give atreatment and we expect that to work.”He adds, “Left untreated, acne is des-tined to get worse.” People of all agesget acne, and Dr. Johnson can help.Thankfully, with today’s treatment op-tions, getting rid of acne can be simpleand painless.

People who live with conditionslike eczema or psoriasis don’t have tosuffer. Dr. Johnson says, “Psoriasis isthe second most common skin ailmentbehind acne.” For example, Dr. John-son says that there are two new treat-ments for people who have a thick

psoriasis plaque. The most affordableand most common treatment is to giveIntralesional Injections, and if moretreatment is necessary there are otheroptions like Immune Modulative med-ications.

While wrinkles are a natural part ofthe aging process, growing old grace-fully doesn’t mean that you have togrow old with wrinkles! If you havewrinkles that you are concerned about,Botox and injectible fillers are a greatalternative to plastic surgery and theyoften have dramatic effects. Dr. John-son says, “These treatments are a lotless aggressive and side effect prone.”These simple, quick and effective pro-cedures are done right on the premises.

Trinity Dermatology uses theCynosure Elite, the most comprehensivelaser hair removal system available today.Since it’s designed for all skin types, it isused to treat the broadest range ofclients. The Cynosure Elite laser systemis optimized for effective treatment offacial and leg veins, as well as benign epi-dermal pigmented lesions (sun spots)with easy, safe, effective and fast results. Most skin types will improve with a no-ticeable difference in 3-4 weeks.

Chemical peels are used to reallychange the appearance of your skin. Results include brightening, tighteningand a lightening of the skin, and it can
