Community News BriefsPasco County Students TourWUSF-TV, Interview BusinessLeaders

On January 19, twenty studentsfrom Pasco County high schools par-ticipated in Business and Media Day,led by the Pasco Economic Develop-ment Council for Youth LeadershipPasco.

Students began their day at Ras-mussen College in Land O’ Lakes, then traveled to the University ofSouth Florida (USF) and toured theWUSF-TV and radio station. At USF,students had the chance to operatecameras, edit video and role play ason-air talent. Eric Keaton, PascoCounty Communications Manager, gave students tips on how to interviewand communicate on camera.

Following the media tour, stu-dents visited the West Pasco IndustrialPark where they split into four teams, each visiting a different business:Power Quality International (PQI),Dais Analytic, PharmaWorks, andSmart Sciences. They interviewed thecompany CEOs and business man-agers and toured their facilities.

“It was a great experience for thestudents and for us,” said John Hagen,President/CEO of Pasco EDC. “Wehad several who came away inspired togo into a technical or engineeringfield.” Hagen is a strong supporter ofeducation in his role as steering com-mittee chair for Pasco County SchoolsCareer Academies, a group of educa-tors and business leaders working to-gether to improve local career andtechnical education.

The day wrapped up at Ras-mussen College where students pro-duced their own news casts, includinga segment on the business they visited, and a set of commercials to promotePasco County. Each group was judgedby a local panel of judges includingEric Keaton (Pasco County Commu-nications Manager), Robert Singer-man (PQI Director of Marketing &Media), Maureen Moore (Saint LeoUniversity Director of Communica-tions), Glenn Hanff (Native MedicalTrends), Krista Hakes (Pasco EDCBusiness Development Manager), andSummer Martin (Pasco EDC Market-ing Coordinator).

Pasco EDC, which was an integralpart of starting the Leadership PascoProgram for adults, is also a long-timesupporter of Youth Leadership Pasco(YLP). YLP is a leadership develop-ment program for high school stu-dents that fosters an awareness of andresponsibility for community involve-ment, develops community pride, andmakes local connections that may fur-ther their career plans.

“The Youth Leadership Pascoprogram exposes the students to somany different business opportunitiesand community and business leaders,”said Rob Aguis, Director of Careerand Technical education for PascoCounty Schools. “Each year the co-hort formulates strong relationshipsfor students—from Anclote HighSchool, to Pasco High School andeverything in between.”

Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil, Inc. Readies Launch ofLoan Fund

The Pasco EDC, Inc. is taking abold step to help small businesses inPasco County. It is rolling out a smallbusiness microloan fund to help localentrepreneurs.

“Our goal has been to raise$250,000 to help Pasco County’s new

and early stage small businesses expandand create jobs,” said Michael Cox,who is leading the Pasco EDC effort.“We have been working on this forseveral months and are definitely mak-ing progress. We think we will be in aposition to start lending in 90 days—or less,” noted Cox, who is an Associ-ate Vice President with Wells FargoAdvisors.

In addition to helping financebusiness ideas, the program will in-clude training to help small businessowners succeed. “Each year small busi-nesses begin and create some jobs buthalf of them fail within the first fewyears,” said John Hagen, Pasco EDCPresident/CEO. According to theSmall Business Administration, the na-tion’s 23 million small businesses cre-ate 75% of the nation’s net new jobsand employ half of all private-sectorworkers. “Two big reasons for smallbusiness failures are lack of money andlimited business experience. Our pro-gram addresses both of these chal-lenges,” said Hagen.

The program will add to theCounty’s already business-friendly en-vironment for entrepreneurs. ThePasco County Board of County Com-missioners is ready to help with$100,000 to fund the program and

The loan program will lendmoney to small businesses located inPasco County. “We expect our averageloan to be about $10,000 to

Proceeds may be used forworking capital, inventory, supplies, furniture, fixtures, machinery andequipment, but not to purchase realestate or to refinance existing debt.Entrepreneurs will also receive freetechnical assistance to help workthrough challenges and capture oppor-tunities. The Breakfast Nook, located inLutz on Land O' Lakes Boulevard(Highway 41), is the perfect place tofind great food and friendly service."The Nook" is independently ownedand operated by Cheryl Croteau withthe help of an excellent team of serversand cooks that are dedicated to mak-ing your dining experience a pleasantone. This family-friendly restaurant'sstaff is like one big happy family andwelcome guests as if they are also fam-ily. The Breakfast Nook is open from6 a.m. to 2 p.m., seven days a week.

The Nook features an extensivebreakfast and lunch menu that offers awide variety of "comfort foods" madewith fresh, high quality ingredients, aswell as many delicious selections forthe more health conscious consumer.

There is ample seating inside thedining room and outside in the court-yard, depending on your preference.Maybe you prefer to be indoors at anice corner table with your nose in abook, or when the weather is nice youmay choose to sit outside and soak up

some sun. Regardless of your prefer-ence, there is cozy table at The Nookjust for you and your party. There areplenty of tables that will easily accom-modate parties of eight or more.

When I visited The BreakfastNook, I chose to sit outside in thelovely courtyard because it was such aperfect day. There are over 20 tablesoutside with plenty of room, cozyseating, and big umbrellas that offer ashady, relaxing atmosphere. Dogs arewelcome at The Breakfast Nook, butCheryl and her staff ask that you keepthem leashed and clean up after themif need be. While dining, my neigh-bors at the table next to us were ac-companied by their charming SpringerSpaniel Sadie, who was on her best be-havior and totally at ease. If I weren'tsuch a dog-lover, I probably wouldhave never known she was there.

Although it was afternoon when Iwent to eat, I really wanted to havebreakfast. My server, Kristin, in-formed me that it would be no prob-lem because they offer breakfast andlunch from open to close everyday. Ihad the House Omelette with home

fries and marble ryetoast (pictured). The HouseOmelette hassausage, bacon, ham, onions, mush-rooms, green pep-pers and cheddarcheese. To finish itoff, they top it withsour cream anddiced tomatoes. Itwas cooked to per-fection and satisfiedmy breakfast cravingentirely.

I was somewhat torn on what toorder for breakfast because it allsounded so good. The Stuffed FrenchToast sounds delightful, like dessertfor breakfast, with thick slices of Texastoast dipped in cinnamon-vanilla bat-ter, then layered with homemadecream cheese filling and topped offwith bananas and pecans.

Some other house favorites forbreakfast at The Nook are the EggsBenedict, cooked with two eggs lay-ered on a toasted English muffin,

Canadian bacon and cheese, toppedwith homemade hollandaise sauce;Biscuits and Sausage Gravy made withhomemade flakey biscuits and south-ern style gravy with lots of whole hogsausage; and last but not least, Spinachand Feta Flatbed, which is grilled pitabread that is spread with a creamyspinach and feta sauce then toppedwith scrambled eggs, fresh tomatoes, feta and mozzarella cheese.

Along with their impressivebreakfast menu, is a lunch menu thatis equally tantalizing. The lunch menu

spans from a vast list of appetizers, homemade soups, salads, half-poundburgers, platters, and sandwiches ga-lore!

One appetizer that stood out tome in its sinfully-deliciousness was theLoaded Taters, which come with yourchoice of crispy French fries or tatertots that are covered in made-from-scratch chili, cheddar cheese, andjalapenos; this one is sure to satisfyyour taste buds. My friend and I splitthem; otherwise I probably wouldhave finished the plate all to myself!

My friend who joined me forlunch decided to go the healthierroute for her main entrée and chose

the Greek Salad (pic-tured); she was com-pletely satisfied withher salad and compli-mented The Nook'sdressing and house-made potato salad thatcame with it.

Robert F. Kennedy said, “Toooften, the arts have been thought ofas a nice, but rather non-essentialpart of education. When we give ourchildren the chance to explore anddevelop their own creativity, we en-courage the sensitivity and ability forself-expression that is so crucial a partof the well-informed, well-educatedperson.”

For the past 12 weeks, eleven4th and 5th grade students atMcKitrick Elementary School inHillsborough County were given thechance to explore an art medium thatis not usually available to that agegroup. Guided by their art teacherDianne Hess Zink and glass artist JayAalberg, through generous supportfrom the Hillsborough County ArtsCouncil, these students created a3’X4’ stained glass window of theirmascot, the Bobcat.

The students, known affection-ately as the Bobcat Breakers, workedafter school every Wednesday andlearned each step of the glass process

from cutting glass to foiling to sol-dering and finally installing the art-work in an outside window in themain office. None of these studentshad worked in glass before. Throughthe process, they learned not onlyhow important art is in our lives butapplied the skills they learn every dayin their classrooms including mathand science.

Too often today, the news isfilled with negative stories of ouryoung people. The reality is thatmost of our children are eager tolearn, to do the right thing and wantto contribute positively to their com-munity. These McKitrick studentshave learned that they can accom-plish even the most advanced taskswhen they are given the opportunity.

As the former chairman of TheKennedy Center, James D. Wolfen-sohn said, “The arts must be at theheart of every child’s learning experi-ence if…they are to have a chance todream and to create, to have beliefs,to carry a sense of cultural identity.”

Everysummer he would visit his uncle whowas an Endodontist (which is a kind ofdental specialist that deals with theroot of the tooth), and he would havethe opportunity to shadow his uncleand work with patients. He truly wasan apprentice, and when he saw theimpact that his uncle had in people’slives, he knew that dentistry was whathe wanted to do.

After attending USF and receivinghis college degree, he received a Mas-ter’s degree in Health and Administra-tion. From there, he was accepted atthe illustrious University of North

Carolina at Chapel Hill where he at-tended their School of Dentistry. Dr.Douglas also completed his residencyat the University of Florida’s Collegeof Dentistry where he performed full-mouth reconstructions, including den-tal implants. This opportunity reallyfueled his desire to do more of thiskind of work, and dental implants andcosmetic reconstruction are his focus.

An avid traveler, he and his beau-tiful wife, Jamie, are active members ofThe Idlewild Baptist Church, and liketo travel the world and go on adven-tures when they are not home withtheir two dogs Cassie and Bella. Theyhave a zeal for life that shows itself inDr. Douglas’s practice, and he and hisfriendly staff make coming to the den-tist something to look forward to.

Welcome to Odessa FamilyDentistry

Odessa Family Dentistry is a cozyand peaceful dental practice with an af-fable staff who take their time whenworking with their patients. Dr. Dou-glas took over for Dr. Bill Jackson whoretired in 2006, and has renovated theoffice twice since then. The practice iscomplete with all of the latest andgreatest technology including com-fortable chairs, noise reduction drills,

and digital x-rays. “Digital x-rays are ideal because

they give off a much lower dose of ra-diation to the patient; in fact, they areup to 90 percent lower. It is also a lotmore diagnostic because, as a dentist, you can manipulate and enhance theimage to better diagnose your patients. Also, digital x-rays are ‘green’ and bet-ter for the environment, because nochemicals are required to create theimage,” says Dr. Douglas.

Intra-oral pictures are also a diag-nostic tool that Dr. Douglas uses fre-quently. By taking pictures of theinside of the patient’s mouth, he isable to show them what he sees, andbest explain his plan of action and themany options that are available to pa-tients these days.

Having a smaller office also allowsDr. Douglas to focus on providing theutmost in dental care. He’s not in arush, and while he values your time,he’s willing to take all the time that isnecessary to make sure that your teethare at their healthiest.

For people who are a little nerv-ous about going to the dentist, OdessaFamily Dentistry offers sedation den-tistry as well, and he has experienceworking with those of us who have

previously avoided going to the den-tist. He does everything he can to helphis patients feel comfortable, even pro-viding cozy neck pillows and blanketsso that they can relax while he takescare of their teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry and TotalMouth Reconstruction:

Dental reconstruction is the abil-ity to create the smile of your dreams,so whether you are looking to simplycreate a prettier aesthetic, are missingsome teeth, or are looking for an alter-native to traditional dentures; Dr.Douglas can dramatically improveyour smile.

More than a dentist and artist, Dr.Douglas considers himself to be an en-gineer of the mouth. “Restoring abroken down situation and creatingsomething that will improve functionand be a thing of beauty is what I liketo do most.”

If you have a chipped tooth orever avoid smiling because you are notproud of your teeth, you should con-sider cosmetic dentistry. Dr. Douglascan easily repair chipped teeth, hideunsightly gaps, and create a beautifulsmile that has straight, brilliant whiteteeth without the need for braces or

apparatuses. This kind of procedurecan be done in as little as two visits toOdessa Family Dentistry.

New materials such as ceramics, have taken cosmetic dentistry to awhole new level. Even in the last tenyears there has been a marked im-provement in the way that smiles canbe improved. Now because of thesematerials can be used in everythingfrom crowns to veneers, a smile can becompletely transformed.

In years past, if you were missinga tooth, a dentist would create some-thing called a bridge that would placea created tooth that would be attachedto the existing teeth on either side ofit. While Dr. Douglas can still performthis popular procedure, he can alsoperform a dental implant. Dental im-plants are a great alternative in thatthey create a beautiful and fully func-tional tooth for the patient.

Do you wear dentures? Do theymove around on you? Did you knowthat dentures can easily be secured bydental implants? This amazing newprocedure that gives people the abilityto eat, speak, and smile again becausetheir dentures stay put. They literallysnap in and out of a patient’s mouth, making your teeth fully functionalagain. Dental implants can bring a

quality of life back into people’s livesthat many of them thought theywould never have again.

“Dr. Douglas restored my mouthwith dental implants, which allowedme to eat and speak with confidenceagain,” said patient William Bonts ofSpring Hill.
