Parents oppose proposed Elem W boundariesBy B.C. [email protected]

Scores of parents from the communitiesof Arbor Woods and Northwood are op-posed to proposed school boundaries thatwould send their children from their WesleyChapel community over to Denham OaksElementary, in Lutz.

About 100 people showed up at a com-munity meeting on Nov. 19 to seek changesto the proposed boundaries for ElementaryW, a new school being built off MansfieldBoulevard.

They told officials they understand thatSeven Oaks Elementary needs relief fromovercrowding, but they don’t want theirchildren to be sent to a school in a differentcommunity.

They raised numerous concerns. They don’t want to contend with the

traffic on State Road 56, particularly nearInterstate 75.

They don’t want their children to leavean A-rated school to go to one with a lowergrade.

They want their children to have accessto the same programs and services that theynow enjoy at their current school.

They’re concerned about how the shiftwill affect which middle school and highschool their children will attend.

And, they question the accuracy of thedistrict’s projections.

They want district officials to change theboundaries so children in Arbor Woods andNorthwood can attend Sand PineElementary, which is closer to where theylive.

Elementary School W is intended to pro-vide some relief for Seven Oaks and DoubleBranch elementary schools. It also has somespace available to accommodate anticipatedgrowth, said Chris Williams, director of plan-ning for Pasco County Schools.

A boundary committee for Pasco CountySchools has recommended a number ofshifts that would affect the boundaries ofSeven Oaks, Double Branch, Sand Pine andDenham Oaks.

Williams said the committee considers anumber of factors when recommendingschool boundaries.

Those include school capacity, currentenrollment and growth projections. Thecommittee also attempts to avoid splittingsubdivisions and considers traffic, he said.

Vince Iglio, representing Arbor Woods, said his neighborhood has just 25 students,

which would have a negligible impact, if thestudents were assigned to Sand Pine.

But, Williams said, if Arbor Woods wereassigned to Sand Pine, the district shouldalso consider other parts of Northwood, which would yield an impact of roughly200 students.

Iglio questioned the district’s projectionsfor Denham Oaks. He said the school couldbecome overcrowded as early as next year, given the development that’s springing upin the area.

Williams said he expects that all of theschools affected by Elementary W’s bound-aries will continue to grow, but some areasare expecting greater growth pressures.

Jennifer Northey, president of the ParentTeacher Association at Denham Oaks, toldparents gathered in her school’s cafeteriathat she understood why they were fightingthe move. She said she’d be doing the samething if her school’s boundaries were beingchanged and her family was affected.

She said she came to the meeting to reas-

sure the parents that good things are hap-pening at Denham Oaks.

David Scanga, a district administratorwho supervises numerous schools, includ-ing Denham Oaks, said he understandsparent’s concerns. He told them thatDenham Oaks has been making greatstrides in improving its performance.

Ali Soofi, a resident of Arbor Woods, de-tailed some of the concerns of the ArborWoods community in an email to TheLaker/Lutz News.

“All of us knew that eventually we wouldbe rezoned to a different school,” Soofiwrote. “However, none of us realized thatwe would be moved to a different city.

“Zero part of our rationale has to dowith any school ratings,” Soofi added. “Wejust want to stay in Wesley Chapel, wherewe spend all our time, money, and worship.”

The Pasco County School Board has thefinal word on school boundaries, and it isslated to consider the boundaries at publichearings set for Dec. 1 and Dec. 15.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOSChris Williams, the director of planning for Pasco County Schools, explains the processused by a boundary committee to make recommendations regarding a school’s boundariesto the Pasco County School Board, which makes the final decision.

Pasco County Commission ChairwomanKathryn Starkey isn’t ready to concede thatTarget must close its store in Odessa.

The national discount chain recently an-nounced the closure of 13 stores across thecountry for poor sales performance.

The Odessa location, at 16400 StateRoad 54, is expected to shut its doors onJan. 30, displacing more than 140 employ-ees.

Target officials say their workers will beoffered positions at other stores.

Starkey has been trying to changeTarget’s mind.

“I let them know they are looking back-ward not forward,” said Starkey at the Nov.17 meeting of the Pasco CountyCommission in Dade City. “We need to havea deeper dealing with Target and showthem in person what’s going on in thisarea.”

There is no word on whether Target willreconsider its decision or send corporate

representatives for a tour. But, Starkey said the closure would be a

“black eye” for Pasco County and Target.“We’d like to move the discount to the

next level, and move our Target off the clo-sure list,” she said.

The super center in Odessa opened in2006, only a couple of years before theeconomy tanked. Pasco County now isbooming with new development, bothcommercial and residential.

That likely wasn’t a factor in Target’s de-cision.

Many big box stores are looking todownsize in an era of Internet sales, saidRichard Gehring, the county’s strategic poli-cy administrator.

In fact, even as Target plans 13 closings, the company also is building 15 new storesin the next year. Only two are super cen-ters. The others range in size from about16,000 square feet to 29,000 square feet, ac-cording to Target.

At more than 120,000 square feet, theOdessa location, with a garden center andparking area, could be attractive to anotherbusiness that wants to move quickly intoready-made space, said Gehring.

“It’s a negative. It could also be a posi-tive,” he said. “It’s a major opportunity.”

Expert says jihadist terrorism is world’s No. 1 threatBy Kathy [email protected]

Jihadist terrorism is the No. 1 challengefacing the world, according to retired U.S.Gen. Barry McCaffrey.

The recent attacks in Paris brought thatreality into stark view. More than 130 peopledied, and more than 350 were wounded, in acoordinated assault at six locations in Paris. It is an act of terrorism being compared to9/11 in New York in 2001.

The Islamic State of Iraq claimed respon-sibility for the attack.

McCaffrey was clear on one point thathas been a lightning rod for opposing views.

“This isn’t a Muslim problem. It’s a ji-hadist problem,” said McCaffrey, a NBCnational security analyst. “I would argue thatthere is not a conflict between Islam and theWest.”

McCaffrey made his remarks to an esti-mated crowd of 220 at the StudentCommunity Center at Saint Leo Universityon Nov. 19. The retired four-star general wasthe first lecturer for the University SpeakerSeries.

He touched on a wide-ranging list of se-curity issues including ISIS, nuclearproliferation, the future of Cuba post-FidelCastro, and the tensions between Russia andthe United States.

During a question and answer period, au-dience questions focused on ISIS and how

to address its threats. The U.S. exerts great power in the Middle

East financially, politically and militarily,McCaffrey said but defeating ISIS, and terror-ism in general, is complicated.

“It’s much tougher than it looks,” he said.“In the long-term, some of these situationshave no solutions. The best strategy becomescontaining it, isolating it and waiting it out.”

In reference to the barbarism of ISIS andthe recent Paris attacks, McCaffrey said,“There is an element of mankind based oncruelty.”

McCaffrey has served three White Houseadministrations, including Republicans andDemocrats. He describes himself as a non-partisan observer — who has been in andout of war zones, including Iraq andAfghanistan — who gives objective opin-ions.

After Sept. 11, for instance, he was askedabout border security including entry intothe U.S. from Mexico and Canada. At thetime, the U.S. border patrol numbered lessthan 4,000 agents.

“It was asinine,” McCaffrey said.He recommended 45,000, a number he

acknowledges he made up by looking at theNew York Police Department, which pro-tects 8 million people.

In today’s world, the U.S. needs to main-tain air and naval forces that are at least twogenerations in advance of the technology ofother superpowers. But, he said, “We’re not

doing that.” Instead, he said the nation has spent bil-

lions on the Iraq and Afghanistan wars that,in his view, “went wrong.”

Still, in many ways, the country has neverbeen safer, in part because its diversity andopportunities for success are strengths,McCaffrey said.

As a result, America assimilates immigrantpopulations better than Europe, he added.

As an example, McCaffrey noted thatMuslim populations in California numberabout 800,000 residents. In Michigan, thereare 450,000 Muslims, and in Virginia,250,000, he said.

“Europe is in trouble, France even moreso,” McCaffrey said. “It’s a secular state, andthey haven’t dealt with the migrant popula-tion very effectively. Mostly, we know howto get along and not talk about religion as aprerequisite for who you are.”

On the nuclear arms race, McCaffrey saidthere are about 30 countries in the hunt tobecome nuclear states. “No good couldcome of it,” he said.

India and Pakistan, which have had long-standing border disputes, are a potentialflash point for the arms race. And, aggressionby a nuclear-armed Iran is No. 3 onMcCaffrey’s list of “near term” world securitychallenges.

Though he didn’t specifically address thematter, McCaffrey is on record in oppositionto the recent nuclear deal struck with Iran.

“There are places on the face of the earthwhere this is a real threat,” he said.

McCaffrey described Russia as a third-world country with President Vladimir Putinessentially operating a “criminal oligarchy.”

Putin’s aggression in Ukraine remainstroubling, the security analyst said.

That region, including Bulgaria, theBalkan states and Poland, is part of NATO,and because of that, the U.S. has treaty obli-gations. “I don’t know if we understandthat,” McCaffrey said. “We’re pledged to go totheir assistance.”

Cuba could present the U.S. with a hu-manitarian crisis following the death of FidelCastro, he predicted.

McCaffrey anticipates a violent strugglefor power post-Castro.

“They (Cubans) will want freedom,” hesaid. “They will want to get out of there.”

One bright spot for the U.S., is its de-creasing dependence for oil on the MiddleEast countries. Currently, McCaffrey said ourmajor oil suppliers are companies in theU.S., Mexico, Canada and Venezuela.

“This is a good news story,” he said. But, there is a caveat.McCaffrey said the U.S. has no coherent

energy policy to address pressing issuessuch as mass transit and expanding our ca-pacity at ports. But, McCaffrey isn’t withouthope.

“We’ll blunder into it, as we normally do,”he said.

Pasco County commissioners approved aresolution seeking a state legislative morato-rium on hydraulic fracking, and a studycommission to review the pros and cons ofthe controversial method of drilling for oiland natural gas.

According to the resolution, public hear-ings also should be held, and the studycommission should include representativesfrom the Florida Association of Counties, en-vironmental groups, concerned citizens, andthe oil and gas industries.

But, it took some heavy editing to reacha consensus at the commissioners’ meetingon Nov. 17.

Commissioners deleted several passageson scientific data that troubled PascoChairwoman Kathryn Starkey.

“I would like to get two sides of the sci-entific data,” she said. “I’ve only had one.”

However, she added, “I think we all wanta moratorium.”

Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moorealso has mixed feelings on the issue. But, hesaid, “I think there does need to be a study.”

During fracking, chemically treated high-pressure water is pumped into a drilledpipeline to break apart rock formations toextract oil or natural gas.

Supporters say fracking is a safer extrac-tion method than mining for coal, andprovides a cleaner source of fuel.Opponents say fracking leads to water con-tamination, and increases the risks ofsinkholes and earthquakes.

Garden club members had hoped for amore forceful resolution from Pasco’s com-missioners, but said they were glad thecommissioners brought attention to theissue.

The club members are concerned about

State and House bills expected to be votedon during the 2016 legislative session thatbegins in January.

The bills place control of fracking withthe state, leaving local governments with no“opt out” clause.

Such a clause is among the requests inthe county’s approved resolution. But, whenStarkey inquired if the state legislature coulddeny home rule, Pasco County AttorneyJeffrey Steinsnyder said, “Yes. They’re thestate legislature.”

The bills also require a $1 million studyof the risks and hazards of fracking by thestate’s Department of EnvironmentalProtection. The study would be due by June30, 2017. The DEP then could adopt rulesfor issuing permits for fracking.

“There is no moratorium,” said PatCarver, environmental chairwoman of thegarden club, referring to the proposed statelegislation.

The bills aim to write the rules to approvefracking, said Peggy Woods, a garden clubmember. “Once the horse is out the barn, there’s nothing else we can do,” she said.

The leadership gavel for the PascoCounty Commission is now in the hands ofnewly elected Pasco Chairwoman KathrynStarkey.

Commissioners voted on Nov. 17 to ap-point Starkey, who was the commission’svice chair, to succeed Ted Schrader.

Schrader has pre-filed to run for theproperty appraiser’s office in 2016.

Pasco County Commissioners alsonamed Mike Moore as the board’s vicechairman.

The largely ceremonial positions typical-ly rotate each year among the five electedcommissioners.

Starkey, who represents District 3, saidher goal is to run efficient meetings.

She was elected to the commission in2012 after serving six years on the PascoCounty School Board. She replaced retiringPasco County Commissioner AnnHildebrand, who served nearly 28 years onthe county commission.

Moore, who represents District 2, waselected in 2014. He replaced retiring PascoCounty Commissioner Pat Mulieri, whoserved two decades on the commission.

Special to The Laker / Lutz News

When people come to Medi-Weightlossin Lutz for help losing weight, many aresurprised by the clinic’s focus on health.

“Losing weight is all about your health. It’s the most important reason to loseweight,” said Gerri Willett, owner andmanager of the clinic on SR 54 and OakGrove Boulevard. “For every 10 poundssomeone loses, it increases their life byone-and-a-half years.”

That translates into living an additionalfive years for the average Medi-Weightlosspatient, who typically loses 35 poundswhile on the program.

“We tell our patients to forget about los-ing weight because of their appearance. We want them to thinkfirst about losing weightto improve their health,”said Gerri.

The Lutz Medi-Weightloss clinic, whichis owned by Gerri, herhusband Tom, and Markand Ronda Willett, is cel-ebrating its 10th year.Their clinic has helpedhundreds of area peopleregain their health by los-ing weight with Medi-Weightloss’ proven three-step program:

“We understand thatlosing weight is very diffi-cult — perhaps one of themost difficult things onecan do,” said Gerri.“We’re here to guide ourpatients through all three phases of weightloss, and then continue supporting them sothey don’t gain their weight back.”

When meeting the staff at Medi-Weightloss, the first thing many peoplenotice is their empathy and sincere sup-port. The medical doctors, who focus onweight loss, and their health care assistants

view being overweight as a medical prob-lem that can be just as serious as diabetesand other chronic conditions.

“People who have never been over-weight don’t understand that losing weightis very difficult, and often mistakenlybelieve it’s a lack of discipline,” said Gerri.“Our staff truly understands the challengesof losing weight, because most of themwere our patients before they becameemployees.”

Studies show that obese people aremore impulsive, are procrastinators andfalsely believe they can lose weight bythemselves, Gerri said.

“So many people come to us caught upin a negative circle, where they lose a fewpounds, only to gain it back because they

eat out of stress or frustra-tion,” said Gerri.

Most of the patients atMedi-Weightloss arewomen, and most havebetween 30 and 50 lbs. tolose. But, many men alsoare clients and do very wellon the program.

“Anyone who does ourprogram correctly, will loseweight,” said Gerri, whosaid most clients lose theirweight in three to fourmonths. “Patients usuallysee a weight loss of 8 to 10pounds in the first week, and then 2 to 3 pounds aweek after that. It reallydoes work!”

As a patient’s bodyadjusts to their new

weight, it becomes healthier, and the per-son feels the best they have in years withmore energy, and fewer aches and pains.

“The longer a patient maintains theirgoal weight, the easier it gets to keep itoff,” said Gerri. “If our program didn’twork, we would not still be in operation 10years after we opened our Lutz clinic.”

Property Group, booked rooms for its teammembers.

People from corporate headquarters arestill flying in, said Todd Patrick, the hotel’sgeneral manager.

But, reservations don’t have to comefrom long-distance travelers. Patrick said awoman from Spring Hill booked a night atthe hotel within the past week because shewanted to get an early start on her shop-ping.

Overall, he said, “It’s hard to gauge. But,there are a few people making reservationsto shop.”

That can happen, apparently, even whenthe drive from home is only 30 minutes.

The shopping season is expected to bestrong as it officially kicks off on BlackFriday, according to recent surveys by theInternational Council of Shopping Centers.

Sales should increase about 3.3 percent, according to one survey. Another consumersurvey showed customers plan to spend$702 on average for holiday gifts, an in-crease from $677 in 2014.

“It’s a pretty sizable jump,” said JesseTron, spokesman for the council.Consumers are feeling pretty good. “Itshould produce what should be a verystrong season.”

So, cash registers will be jingling at TheShops at Wiregrass and Tampa PremiumOutlets. There really is no direct competitionbetween them, but there is the potential forpeople who come to one venue to drive onover to the other, Tron said.

“The two are different kinds of shoppingtrips,” he added.

Local malls typically are destinations forarea residents who stop by once or twice aweek. Outlets malls draw regionally fromshoppers who make it a day trip and stayfor hours.

But, he said, “(Local) malls are increasing-ly looking at becoming experiencedestinations. They may add unique diningand entertainment options. It’s not necessar-ily about retail. It’s adding the extra layer.Local malls and shopping centers are veryinvested in their community.”

For more information on holiday shop-ping hours for Tampa Premium Outlets, visitPremiumOutlets.com/outlet/tampa/about.

those people deciding to check out TheShops at Wiregrass, at State Road 56 andBruce B. Downs Boulevard.

“The benefit for us is that customers thatwouldn’t have come typically all of the wayup here to visit — from Tampa, or someouter-lying areas — now they’ll come to theoutlet (mall),” Lenners said.

The Shops at Wiregrass, just 2 miles awayfrom Tampa Premium Outlets, will likelyserve customers who want to eat at itsrestaurants or explore additional shoppingoptions, he said.

The addition of Tampa Premium Outletshas not prompted The Shops at Wiregrass torethink its game plan or amp up its events,Lenners said.

“We’ve established ourselves as a stapleof the community, and that’s because of theevents that we do,” he said. For example, thisis the eighth holiday season that The Shopsat Wiregrass has hosted “Symphony inLights.”

This year, the show, presented by FloridaHospital Wesley Chapel, has been revamped.

But, that’s not because of the new outletmall, Lenners said.

The old tree wouldn’t work with currenttechnology, and problems cropped up whenit rained, Lenners said.

The new tree is 54 feet tall, including thestar, and is about 27 feet in diameter.

“The presentation is much more dramat-ic,” Lenners said. There are four shows anight, with music from the Trans-SiberianOrchestra for two shows and a mix of holi-day songs — that were suggested by mallshoppers — for the other two.

In between the sound and light shows, local groups give live performances on astage in the mall’s center court, in front ofthe giant Christmas tree.

That’s been a tradition for years.“Every night, there’s a different group.

They’ve got their 45 minutes of fame,”Lenners said.

The mall will continue to have assortedevents, including the Suncoast Arts Festival, car shows, fresh markets and charity walksfor various causes, Lenners said.

It also continues to consider new possi-bilities.

“We’re constantly evolving things. We’remassaging. We’re constantly looking atevents: What works? What doesn’t? What’sstarting to get stale?” Lenners said.

Having the Tampa Premium Outlets andThe Shops at Wiregrass in such convenientproximity adds to the Wesley Chapel area’sgrowing cache, Lenners said.

“We’re turning into a shopping mecca, destination. You can pretty much make aday of it,” Lenners said.

been the largest annual moneymaker for theGFWC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’s Club.

“It probably affected about 300 ven-dors,” Simmons said. “I had room for onephotographer – that was it.”

The show has been a popular stop forvendors who travel about the South to selltheir wares and art works at shows and fes-tivals, Simmons said.

For some of them, it’s their best show ofthe year, she said.

The two-day event also has been a bigdraw for people who enjoy buying uniqueholiday gifts.

“It’s always such a wonderful communi-ty event,” Simmons said. “It gets everybodyinto the Christmas spirit.”

Besides giving vendors a quality venueand shoppers a fun place to pick up pres-ents, the show has generated money tohelp scores of local organizations.

The lack of the revenue will decreasethe woman’s club’s ability to help other or-ganizations, causing a ripple effect that willtouch many lives.

SCORES & SCHEDULE

Sunlake notches winning season, playoff berth

Sources: MaxPreps, various

By Michael [email protected]

Sunlake coach Bill Browningisn’t one to make excuses whenhis team doesn’t win. But a quicklook at the injury list shows thatthe Seahawks’ team wasn’t at fullstrength when it fell to Vanguardon Nov. 13 by a 40-12 margin.

Take Sunlake’s starting re-ceivers, for example. They weren’ton the field.

Two of Browning’s top wide-outs were nursing brokencollarbones. Another had a brokenankle. And those guys only madeup part of the injury list, which in-cluded linebackers, linemen, special teams players and even acouple of players who were lostbefore the season even started.

“We had five broken bones thisyear. I’ve never had five brokenbones in a year, I don’t think,”Browning said. “By the end of theseason, the injury bug had reallygotten us bad.”

The end of the season also pro-vided the toughest part of the schedule.

After Sunlake raced to a 7-0 start despitesome injuries, they found tough competi-tion at the end of the year. Losses to districtchampion Mitchell and St. Petersburg werefollowed by a 1-point win over River Ridgeto finish the season 8-2.

By the time Vanguard (the team Sunlakebeat 24-6 in last year’s playoffs) defeated theSeahawks, the team had dropped three of its

last four games.Still, Browning’s healthy athletes gave it

all they had. They played the Knights tough early, cut-

ting the lead to 14-10, at one point in thegame. But, their opponent proved to be toopowerful to compete against at anythingless than full strength.

“They’re a very good football team thisyear. They’ve got excellent speed, and they’re

big and athletic,” Browning said of Vanguard, who fell to Gainesville, 35-28, on Nov. 20.

“Our kids gave great effort on the field,”Browning said.

That effort didn’t result in a playoff win,but it did mean another season with at leasteight wins, the sixth straight for the pro-gram. Playoff berths have become common, and the team is recognized as a force in 6A-6, considered a challenging district with

Mitchell, Springstead, Pasco andLand O’ Lakes.

And while it might be a bitearly to speculate on 2016,Browning acknowledged he’llhave some important players com-ing back next year. Two-wayathletes Ryan Clark and CrisGaldos will join quarterback JustinHall as they try to build on thisyear’s success.

But, they’ll have to do it with anew offensive line. That unit wasmade up of seniors, which meansit will be Browning’s main build-ing project before the regularseason.

The team has a history of set-ting high goals and reaching them.Sunlake claimed its first districttitle last season. And, Browningsaid he’d like to see them eventu-ally get farther than the secondround — the school’s best.

Browning realizes that suchachievements are not possibleevery year, especially when play-ers don’t stay healthy. In manycases those injuries could mean a

lost season, but at Sunlake it still resulted ina playoff berth.

Despite the early exit from the playoffs, this year is still recognized as a successfulseason, and is a source of pride for a coachwho wants to see his team give it their all,no matter the circumstances.

“They battled the whole way,” Browningsaid, referring to his athletes. “We went as faras we could go this year.”

COURTESY OF KENDALL BROWNINGThe Sunlake Seahawks fought through assorted injuries, but reached the playoffs before falling to Vanguard.

Two runners for Saint Leo stood out atthe 2015 NCAA Division II champi-onships, on Nov. 21 in Joplin, Missouri.

For the women, sophomore ColettRampf finished 23rd overall. She was theonly runner from her team to finish in

the top 100 at the event. For the men, senior Valentin Lenz fin-

ished 79th overall, setting a school recordfor the 10K race. His 31:08.3 time wasnearly a full minute better than the previ-ous Saint Leo record.

As Beverly Levitt walks around the8-acre horse farm in WesleyChapel, she talks to the animals.

There’s Moe and Clint. Chino andCracker. Moon Light and Fancy. Renegadeand Baby Bobby.

There’s Brandy, Fagozee, Cooper andPixie.

Some of them, including Pixie and MoonLight, have been at Healing Horses, OneChild at a Time Inc., since the horse rescuebegan six years ago.

As Levitt steps around the farm, in hershin-high rubber boots, she talks about thehorses’ temperaments.

Chino arrived at the farm on Sept. 22 andhas gained more than 100 pounds since.

Pixie, a pony, “has the NapoleonSyndrome,” Levitt said. “She runs this place.”

Renegade, “was completely wild whenhe came here. They had turned him looseon the side of the road in HernandoCounty,” she said.

Some horses have medical conditions. One has chronic ulcers. Another, narcolepsy. One has endured dozens of surgeries.

Fagozee, a former racehorse, had beensent off for auction, but was saved and Levittwound up with him.

“He has cancer. His days are numbered. As long as he’s comfortable and happy, we’llkeep him as healthy as we can; and whenhis time comes, we’ll put him out.”

The horse rescue began when Levitt sud-denly ‘inherited’ 11 horses.

She knew she would be taking in six, butdidn’t anticipate getting nearly double thatnumber.

At first, she was irritated. She was wor-ried, too, about being saddled with so muchresponsibility.

“They were in bad shape,” Levitt said. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m a blue collar

person, what am I going to do?’ ”But then, during the middle of the night,

she was inspired.“I’d been a scout leader many years be-

fore, and we had always taken the ADD(attention deficit disorder) kids, the ADHD(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)kids — my husband and I, before he passedaway.

“We had always wanted a center for kidswith special needs,” she said.

Therapy horse farm faces possible closure

Meanwhile, she also was blessed with aspecial needs grandchild.

“I have met hundreds of families (withspecial needs children). I had a full under-standing of what just the therapeuticequipment needed by these children cost, and it’s not covered by insurance,” she said.

So, she decided to use the horses to pro-vide therapy.

Over the years, roughly 50 horses havespent time at the rescue. Some are therenow. Some have been adopted. Some havedied.

During that same time, hundreds of kidshave spent time working the horses, ridingthem, observing them, walking them andbathing them.

One recent day, Caitlin Okolovitch, whoattends Land O’ Lakes High School, wasworking Brandy.

Okolovitch found out about HealingHorses when she and her mom were doingan Internet search to find a horse rescue. The teenager wants to work with horses.

She began volunteering at HealingHorses when she was in middle school.

“When I first came out here, it was awe-some, and I never wanted to leave,” the15-year-old said. “A lot of the kids cominghere make bonds with the horses,” she said.

Brandy is the horsethat Levitt uses as a thera-py horse for teenagers, she said.

Kids can relate to thehorses.

Devin Clark, anotherregular at the farm, has aspecial bond with a horsenamed Baby Bobby.

The 12-year Clark sad-dlebroke Baby Bobby,Levitt said. He was at thefarm recently giving thehorse a bath.

Clark said he enjoysworking the Baby Bobby, and he thinks other kidslike coming to HealingHorses, too.

Levitt said the horseshave helped all sorts ofkids.

Some have had scrapeswith the law. Others justlove being around horses.

Some come from asnearby as Zephyrhills, andWesley Chapel and LandO’ Lakes, and others havetraveled from Brooksville, Brandon andPinellas County, Levitt said.

Many of the kids have special needs, such as autism, hearing problems, or difficul-ties at home.

Horses have an uncanny way of under-standing these kids, she said.

“They have more compassion and sensi-tivity than any human being I’ve ever met,”Levitt said.

“You put a kid with a 1,500-pound ani-mal that they can tell what to do, and watchyour self-esteem grow, and their confidenceand their abilities,” Levitt said.

“One child, with Down Syndrome, hadno language when he came here. Helearned a lot of words on the back of ahorse,” she said.

Initially, Levitt supported the horse farmon her own.

But, she realized she couldn’t do it alone, and she set up a nonprofit organization.

For many years, a private donor providedmuch of the support.

But, that donor has decided to use the

money she was providing to others to sup-port her own charity, Levitt said.

“We’re in trouble. I’m not going to godown without a fight. Right now, I’ve got abarn full of feed, but I’ve got the feed bill togo with it.”

“You can only rob Peter to pay Paul forso long before it’s going to catch up.”

It costs about $2,000 a month in feedand more than $2,000 a month in hay, andthat’s not counting the veterinarian bills, thefarrier costs and assorted other costs.

So, Levitt is trying to build communitysupport to keep the operation going.

If it closes, it would be shame, said LizClark, who said all five of her sons have ben-efited from spending time at the farm.

Levitt is seeking donors to pledge $5 amonth to help keep the operation going.

“That is one Starbucks coffee a month. That is one visit to McDonald’s. Five dollarsa month makes a lot of difference in a lot oflives, and it’s a tax write-off to boot.”

Fancy is taking it easy. The quarter horse, now over 20 years old, has lived at the stable formore than five years. She has chronic ulcer problems.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOSBeverly Levitt and Moe, a rescue horse at Healing Horses, One Child at a Time Inc., a horse rescue operation in Wesley Chapel. Moe is at least25 years old and has undergone at least 30 surgeries, Levitt said. He’s an Appendix, which is a quarter horse crossed with a thoroughbred.

Devin Clark gives Baby Bobby a bath. Baby Bobby is a ponythat was wild when he came to the farm. Now, the horse iscompletely at ease with Clark.

Pixie, shown here with Lynn Oliver, hasbeen living at Healing Horses. Oliver is vicepresident of the nonprofit organization.
