The pastors of Our Lady of the RosaryCatholic Church in Land O’ Lakes and SaintPeter the Apostle Church in Trinity have re-ceived honors bestowed by Pope Francis.

The Rev. Ron Aubin and the Rev. DennisHughes now have an additional title, besidespastor and father — they now also bear thetitle of monsignor, a designation that is be-stowed on those who have been named aChaplain of His Holiness.

The Most Rev. Robert Lynch, Bishop ofthe Diocese of St. Petersburg, nominated themen for the honor, which was officially con-ferred during a special ceremony on April17 at the diocese’s Bethany Center in Lutz.

The evening also included the award ofthe Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal to 14 re-cipients. One person also received theBenemerenti Medal.

To be nominated to be designated as amonsignor, one must be at least 65 yearsold, Aubin said.

It’s typically a recognition for effortsmade over a lifetime of ministry, said Aubin, who said he grew up in Catholic family, at-tending Catholic schools and felt calledearly on to be a priest.

He was surprised when he got the callfrom the bishop, informing him he wasbeing nominated for the honor.

“It’s nice to be recognized,” Aubin said, adding that he thinks the older parishionersat Our Lady of the Rosary were more excit-ed than he was by the honor.

While he is grateful to Bishop Lynch andPope Francis for the designation, he said, “Asfar as I’m concerned, there’s no better title

than Father.”Aubin also noted: “when the kids started

calling me Papa Ron, that was the best hon-orific.”

“I’m just a pastor. That’s all I am. It’s all Iwanted to be,” Aubin said.

The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Medal, con-sidered the highest honor which the churchawards to its lay and religious members, isgranted by the Pope following the nomina-tion of a bishop, who provides a casestatement regarding the nominee’s worthi-ness for the designation.

Including those designated during theceremony, only 62 men and women in thediocese of St. Petersburg have received thisdistinction in the past 20 years.

Local recipients of Pro Ecclesia etPontifice Medal were: Gerald Phillip Giglia,of St. Timothy Church in Lutz and, ArthurFrancis Kirk, former president of Saint LeoUniversity, of St. Leo Abbey/St. Rita CatholicChurch, Dade City.

Mother’s Day is coming up. Thatprobably means flowers and acard for your mom, your spouse

or someone you know who is a mom.And that sounds like a nice way to recog-

nize them: Flowers and a card. Not verycreative, of course. Maybe a little boringwhen you think about it. But nice, I guess.

The question is, do you want to be bor-ing, or do you want mom to know she’sspecial? Does she really want another yearof flowers to throw away and a card to putin a shoebox? Or does she want to spendsome quality time with you and the family?

Maybe this is the year to surprise momwith something she doesn’t expect, like anevening listening to live, classical musicfrom an acclaimed orchestra. How oftendoes she get to do that?

On Mother’s Day, May 8, the whole fami-ly can do something together when theFlorida Orchestra performs a free concert atCurtis Hixon Park, 600 N. Ashley Drive, inTampa. It’s a nearly two-hour show withmusic you’ve definitely heard before, includ-ing some classic favorites. As in, legitimateclassics.

Oh, and did I mention it’s free? I did? Ok,just checking.

The Florida Orchestra has put together aMother’s Day performance for the past fewyears, and the concert is very popular.Thousands of people bring lawn chairs, food, drinks, blankets and even leashed pets(the park is dog-friendly) to hear them per-form.

And it’s not just a few parts of the or-chestra. It’s the whole thing. Around 60musicians will perform compositions like

Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture andOffenbach’s Can-Can.

Never heard those, you say? Yes, youhave. You might not know them by name, but when you hear it you’ll recognize it.There’s also going to be music from “StarWars: The Force Awakens” and a tribute toThe Beatles. I’m sure you’ve heard of them.Throw in the Olympic fanfare and finish itall off with some fireworks, and you have anevening of fun, unique entertainment.

And how will mom feel about taking herto a free event? I think she’ll be proud toknow that you listened to her about savingmoney and being responsible with your fi-nances. And she’ll be honored that you’respending time with her to do somethingunique and fun. No offense to flower shopsand candy makers, but this is a memory thatwill last a lot longer.

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m., butyou’ll want to get there early to get a goodspot. Feel free to invite other mothers, too.Maybe you know a mom whose childrendon’t live locally, or aren’t with them any-more. They deserve to be recognized, too. Sowhether it’s a friend, neighbor or familymember, invite them to come with you andenjoy some entertaining live music from aspecial group of performers.

This isn’t some garage band playing at aneighborhood party.

The Florida Orchestra has been aroundfor decades, performed with WhitneyHouston when she sang “The Star-Spangled

north of the Land O’ Lakes Post Office, iscomfortable with separate offices for pre-testing, exe exams, contact lens fittings andframe selection.

2. ExperienceDr. Kevin Smith began his optical career

over 26 years ago when he learned the craftof manufacturing eyeglasses from his stepfa-ther, Paul H. West. Kevin went on to gradu-ate from USF, and received his medicaldegree from Nova Southeastern Universityin 1999. Dr. Smith has practiced in manyareas of optometry, including commercialeye clinics, skilled nursing facilities and pri-vate practice.

3. No sales pressureUnlike national optical stores in the mall,

our staff has no sales quotas. We help youselect frames and finishes that meet yourbudget and look great on your face. Ourfocus is your health – not selling glasses!

4. Designer framesJuicy, Nike, CK, Swarovski, Revo, Fysh,

Costa del Mar and many more! We carry afull line of designer brands, as well as the lat-est designs in affordable eyewear.

5. N/C digital cameraOur state-of-the-art digital camera is used

on every patient to get the most accurateprescription. Because digital cameras arevery expensive, most optical offices chargeextra to use this important diagnostic tool.

6. In-house lab workWe’re the only optical practices in Tampa

with the training and equipment to finishlenses in our own lab. This gives us final con-trol to make sure your lenses are grinded per-fectly to match your prescription.

7. Bifocal contact lensesDr. Smith prescribes contact lenses that

have the bifocal component built into thelens. So if you want to continue wearingcontacts after you need reading glasses, nowyou can!

8. Save your vision, and even your lifeDr. Smith recently diagnosed a melanoma

eye tumor in a 40-year-old man. The patientcomplained of blurry visions, and uponexamination, Dr. Smith discovered a tumorthat was destroying the eye.

It is essential that people with systemicdiseases, especially high blood pressure anddiabetes, see their optometrist every 12months. Others should go every 18 months.Seeing your eye doctor can save your vision, and even your life.

9. We make house callsDr. Smith makes house calls in a mobile

satellite office in a custom-designed van. Forelderly and disabled patients who cannot getto our office, we go to them.

10. Local Roots/Local ResidentMany people know Dr. Smith from the

eights years he worked with Charley Chaneyat the Eyeglass Factory in Lutz. In 2008, Dr.Smith bought Infinity Eye Care in SouthTampa, and is thrilled to be back inLutz/Land O’ Lakes with a second office.

Dr. Smith lived in Lake Padgett East inLand O’ Lakes for many years, and movedto Seven Oaks in Wesley Chapel in 2007when he married Sharon. The couple’sdaughter, Kayla, is a graduate of WiregrassHigh School and attends Pasco HernandoState College.

judging. The Land O’ Lakes Christian School stu-

dents were thrilled and surprised by theirimpressive showing.

“I was not expecting to win. The otherpeople were extremely good. I thought Iwould be blessed just to place. Even at stateI wasn’t expecting to win,” said Campbell, asenior.

In the Topical Preaching category, hepreached about faith, with his remarksaimed at encouraging people to “have faithand trust God” in their decision-making.

For Original Persuasive Oratory, he fo-cused on generational values.

“It was about how the generation thatour grandparents grew up (in), during theirtime, they were taught to have manners andpeople didn’t put so much value on materialpossessions and people valued the familyunit, things like that — and how our genera-tion lacks a lot of that today,” he said.

Campbell plans to attend PensacolaChristian College and to major in BiblePastoral Ministries. He said he’ll go whereverGod leads him, but he hopes that will be tobe a pastor of a church.

Even though he claimed the top prize forin the preaching category, Campbell said hediscovered something surprising.

“I’ve been working really hard at this fora few years now and I always thought thatthe ultimate joy and happiness would comefrom when I finally won. But now that I’veactually won best in the nation … I realized

that I’ve had the same happiness all alongand that actually came from just being ableto be used of God. I already had the ultimatehappiness,” Campbell said.

Zhang, a junior, did an elaborate work towin the top prize in Calligraphy.

She’s interested in pursuing a degree inarchitecture and has identified CornellUniversity as her ideal school. A native ofChina, she has been living in the UnitedStates for two years.

She also placed in the top five in twomathematics categories. She noted that themathematics exams at the national levelwere more difficult than those at the statecompetition.

Mengel depicted a skyline in herPrintmaking entry. “I love being up high be-cause you see everything,” she said, explaining her fascination for skylines.

Like her school mates, the sophomorewas delighted by her first-place finish. “I did-n’t think I was even going to place, so it wasa big shock,” she said.

Juday, a senior, said he previously compet-ed in photography but decided to giveaccounting a try this year, after being encour-aged by a teacher.

“I didn’t know I placed first until I got tothe state competition and they called myname. I had no idea,” said Juday, who tookthird at nationals.

Paul Wei, a junior, won second inExtemporaneous Speaking. “I was very excit-ed,” Wei said. It was his first competition andhe plans to compete again, he said.

It was a great bonding experience for stu-dents, Wei said.

movies...and being outdoors,” said Glenn, noting she has an affection for all animals.

“It’s all she wanted to do since she was alittle girl,” her mother, Monique said. “Shewould always say, ‘I want to ride horses, Ijust want to ride horses.’”

Shortly after she began riding as an ado-lescent, Glenn’s cardiologist advised her tostop the activity until she had heart surgery. The surgery removed the extra electricalpathway through the use of a catheter-basedprocedure, otherwise known as ablation.

Heeding her physician’s recommenda-tion, Glenn stopped riding for about fiveyears before being receiving the OK to re-sume equestrian-related activities.

She hasn’t stopped riding since.“I like the adrenaline and the thrill,” said

Glenn, who trains horses at Showcase Farmsin Lutz. “I’m actually the only one in my fam-ily that really likes (riding) horses; we’reactually all allergic to horses.”

Shortly after starting back up, Glenn “fellin love” with Longo, a 1,200-pound horsenamed after Tampa Bay Rays all-star thirdbaseman Evan Longoria.

Formerly mistreated when it wasyounger, Longo came to Glenn as a very“scared and skittish” horse, making its train-ing a lengthy work-in-progress.

“He was like the horse that no one want-ed to ride in the barn,” said Glenn, a 2015graduate of Sunlake High School. “When wewent to our first (equestrian) show, wecouldn’t even get a saddle on him. He wasrearing up and bucking and would try torun you over.”

To contain the horse, Glenn would workwith Longo four days to five days a week, training him as a show hunter and jumperover a period of about four years.

“There’s a lot of therapy with horses,”Monique said. “They worked together andcreated that bond and strengthened eachother, and helped with each other’s weak-nesses.

“They both healed each other,” Moniqueadded. “I think she healed his heart and hehealed hers, too.”

Glenn developed Longo—who’s showname is ‘Home Run Hitter’— to the pointwhere he was able to surpass 5-foot jumps, and perform well in several equestrian cir-

cuits throughout the state, including the2015 HITS (Horse Shows in the Sun) HorseShow in Ocala, where together they placedfirst in a class of 60 entries.

“They won a lot of competitions togeth-er—a lot of really good competitionstogether,” Glenn’s mother said.

With Longo aging—he’s approximately20 years old — and Glenn’s desires to com-pete at an even higher level, she made thetough decision to sell the aging horse inDecember to Kaycie Smith, a fellow eques-trian.

“This is kind of his retirement job be-cause he’s jumping 2 (feet) to 3 feet now,”Smith said. “He’s not jumping as high nowthat he’s a little older.”

“It worked out the best way possible,”said Glenn, noting she’s often able visitLongo at the stables in Lutz. “He can stilljump, but we don’t want to injure him.”

Glenn’s current project is a 1,400-pound,5-year-old horse named Zen, whom shebought from an owner in Colorado a fewmonths back.

Zen is still in the beginning stages of histraining and development, Glenn said, adding she plans to start competing withthe horse this summer.

“He’s very hard to train, and didn’t (ini-tially) know what I was asking him, butthese last few weeks, he’s already gotten 50times better than he’s been,” Glenn ex-plained. “We’ll probably do a few shows thisyear, get him off the property and get himused to the environment of showing.”

As she continues to work with Zen andto continue her equestrian career, Glennhopes to one day become a full-time horsetrainer.

“I’m thinking about...majoring in FamilyCounseling and Psychology, and workingwith children and horses in some kind of atherapeutic way,” she said. “That’d be mydream job.”

As for her heart condition, Glenn saidshe had a few episodes during her senioryear of high school, where she would some-times get dizzy and “pass out” during intensephysical activity.

While noting she’s fine now, Glenn andher family continue to monitor her healthclosely.

“We’re just keeping an eye on it and(keeping) our fingers crossed,” her mothersaid.

SADDLE, from page 1A

“We’re able to get working faster be-cause you know each other’s strengths andweaknesses. You know who works wellwith what and who doesn’t, so you’re reallyable to divide and conquer the workloadand get things done quickly,” she said.

Robinson noted another benefit: “It’smuch easier to motivate each other, as well.Being together for so long, you tend to forma bond, like family.”

It’s a bond that extends beyond Odyssey,Robinson said. “We’re there in support foreach other, whenever we’re going throughanything in life.”

Snider agreed: “We’re a family first and ateam second.”

The team has done most of the prepara-tion it needs to do before making the20-hour trip to Iowa State University inAmes, Iowa, for the competition that will beheld May 25 through May 28.

Now, they’re focusing mostly on fundrais-ing and have a number of events planned incoming weeks.

At the world competition, they’ll be test-ing their skills against teams who are

converging on Iowa from all over the globe.About 800 teams are expected to competeand countries that will be represented thereinclude Russia, China, India, Poland, Japanand Morocco, to name just a few.

During one part of the competition, they’ll be presenting a play. The theme oftheir presentation will be “Saying Goodbyeto Odyssey,” which draws on their years ofcompeting in the competition, which drawson their creativity and problem-solving.

“We have 8 minutes for set up and per-formance,” Gutierrez said. “We’re bringingpast Odyssey into the present so we canmove through to the future because we’reall moving on,” she said.

The entire team plans to shift into judg-ing OM after this year because Robinson isgraduating and will no longer be able tocompete with them.

Snider said he’s grateful the team hasheld together for this long and is happy tobe going out on a high note by competingat the international level.

“We’ve been trying for five years,” Snidersaid.

LAND O’ LAKES HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: BRIAN WACHTEL (6TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 3-7

Last season was rough for the Gators, whofailed to win a home game at “The Swamp,”and were shutout by their primary rival inSunlake High. Playing five consecutive roadgames didn’t help the cause, either. To relivetheir magical 8-2 season back in 2013, theGators must find some consistent play at thequarterback position, whether that is fromrising senior Spencer Childress or rising jun-ior Jude May. Though the team loses their toptwo rushers from last season in RashawnKindell (526 yards rushing, 5.7 yards percarry) and Tommy Farmer (417 yards, 7 TDs),the Gators may have a breakout candidate intailback Quintin Smith, who’ll be a senior. Ondefense, the Gators return standout safetyJustin Kren, a capable tackler (51 solo tack-les) and ballhawk (five interceptions).

PASCO COUNTY HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: TOM MCHUGH (9TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 4-6

A difficult schedule and some tough breakssteered the Pirates into a losing 2015 season.Despite starting the year 3-0, Pasco High raninto some tough competition in the middle ofthe season, losing four straight games to NorthMarion, Jesuit, Mitchell and Sunlake highschools. A heartbreaking 44-43 overtime loss toSpringstead High added fuel to the fire. Whilethe win-loss total doesn’t show it, the Pirateswere loaded with talent, including cornerbackJayvauhn Myers (Auburn signee), offensivelineman Jamal Mention (Coffeyville (Kansas)Community College signee) and tight endNick Bryant (Middle Tennessee signee). CoachMcHugh must find a way to replace those pro-ductive players, and find a reliable quarterbackafter Michael Penix Jr. transferred to Tampa BayTech.

SUNLAKE HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: BILL BROWNING (9TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-3

Another year, another terrific record. That’s been the narrative for the Seahawksover the past six seasons under the leader-ship of head coach Bill Browning. Since2010, the team has a combined record of53-13. Though the team returns several play-ers at the skill positions, one of the bigquestions leading into the season is how theteam will fare on the offensive line, with thedepartures of Bryce Cooley (Angelo Statesignee), Joe Russum (Black Hills Statesignee) and Leo Baez (Bluefield College). Ifthe Seahawks can create cohesion and pro-vide enough protection in the trenches forstandout pro-style quarterback Justin Hall

(1,729 yards, 17 TDs, 3 INTs), they should bein store for another winning season.

WESLEY CHAPEL HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: ANTHONY EGAN (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 2-8

The Wildcats have suffered four straightlosing seasons, and now it’s up to first-yearhead coach Anthony Egan — a former RiverRidge High assistant — to turn the programaround. Luckily for Egan, the cupboard isn’tbare. Signal-caller Jacob Thomas (44 percentcompletion, 1,825 yards, 17 TDs, 13 INTs)returns as well as pass-catchers Ben Goins(31 receptions, 403 yards) and DevinSingletary (23 receptions, 240 yards). On de-fense, the Wildcats return their top threetacklers in Marcus Gillott, Ellrie Allen andChristian Austin. To improve their record, the Wildcats must find a way to develop aconsistent rushing attack (rushers averagedjust 2.6 yards per carry) and they must winclose games (the team lost three games byseven points or fewer in 2015.)

WIREGRASS RANCHHIGH SCHOOLCOACH: MARK KANTOR (2ND YEAR)2015 RECORD: 2-8

Coach Mark Kantor embarks on year twoof what is perhaps a long-term rebuildingjob. Prior to Kantor’s hiring in 2015, theBulls had three coaches in four years, com-bining for an 8-32 record during that span.To improve in 2016, the Bulls must find away to stay healthy (19 season-ending in-juries were suffered in 2015) andsignificantly improve on offense. The teamaveraged just 10.6 points per game in 2015,and was shutout in half of their games. If theBulls can’t muster up better productionfrom the quarterback position, it’ll be toughto secure a winning record.

ZEPHYRHILLS HIGH SCHOOL:COACH: NICK CARROLL (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-3

The Bulldogs notched their fourthstraight winning season in 2015, but they’llenter the 2016 season with a new headcoach in Nick Carroll, a former SunlakeHigh assistant. Carroll will try to duplicatethe success of former coach ReggieRoberts, but will have a challenge on hishands. Running back Antwione Sims, theteam’s leading offensive playmaker, tore hisACL (anterior cruciate ligament) over amonth ago, and will likely miss severalgames in 2016. Additionally, Carroll mustfind a way to get Bulldogs players to gel, andlearn the style of offense and defense he’simplementing. Carroll expects several in-coming freshmen and sophomores to makean impact in his first season.

ZEPHYRHILLSCHRISTIAN ACADEMY:COACH: MIKE SMITH (2ND YEAR, 11-MAN)2015 RECORD: 4-4

The Warriors had a respectable 2015 sea-son, if you consider it was their first seasonplaying 11-man football after they dominatedthe 6-man ranks for several years. However, theteam may be in for a setback in 2016, as they’llbe without their top offensive player, wide re-ceiver Issac Johnson (62 receptions, 1,013yards), and top defensive player, defensive line-man J’ Won Pickett. Both Johnson (IowaWestern Community College) and Pickett(Minnesota State Community College) areplaying football at junior colleges next season. The Warriors will also have to develop a newquarterback with the impending graduation ofMatthew Iovine, an accurate passer (67 per-cent completion, 1,475 yards). Being withoutlast year’s quarterback and top receiver mayopen the door to additional carries for return-ing running backs such as John Emmanual,Dwight Thomas and Mykh’ael Chavis.

CARROLLWOOD DAY SCHOOLCOACH: LANE MCLAUGHLIN (10TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 7-4

Carrollwood Day School prep fansshould be excited about the potential for anentertaining season, and not just because theprivate school’s football team will be playingat a brand-new athletic complex in 2016. Amajority of Carrollwood’s young playmakerson offense return, including incumbentquarterback Raymond Woodie Jr., leadingrusher Yahsin Wooten (740 yards, 8 TDs) andleading receiver Markeis Colvin (20 recep-tions, 501 yards, 4 TDs.) The Patriots alsoreturn their top two tacklers from last sea-son in linebackers Ryan Verscharen andStephen Walters, who will be seniors.Replacing the production of two sack artistsin Zac Watson-Parcells and Corey Shamleywill be key to take a step forward in 2016.

FREEDOM HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: FLOYD GRAHAM (1ST YEAR)2015 RECORD: 3-7

It’s likely a rebuilding year for newFreedom coach Floyd Graham, who was of-

ficially hired on April 1. The good news forthose that closely follow Freedom’s pro-gram is it’s something Graham should beable to handle, considering he created foot-ball programs from scratch at bothNewsome and Steinbrenner high schools. However, Graham will have some uphill bat-tles to climb in year one. Being hired in Aprildoesn’t give him much time to implementhis coaching philosophy, and develop a rap-port with both players and assistantcoaches. Also, the team is losing a plethoraof seniors from 2015, including do-it-all play-maker Nasir Core.

GAITHER HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: JASON STOKES (6TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 4-6

In order to improve in 2016, theCowboys must make some strides on the of-fensive side of the ball. The team scorednine points or fewer in six out of their 10games. Luckily for Coach Stokes, bellcowrunning back Alex Rodriguez returns.Getting quarterback Gavin Denboer to cutdown on his interceptions (10) is a must. The Cowboys defense should be able tohold its own, with the return of linebackerDecalon Brooks, last year’s leading tackler(114). The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Brooks, theson of Tampa Bay Buccaneers legendDerrick Brooks, is widely viewed as one ofthe top players in all of Tampa. The consen-sus three-star recruit already has Division Ischolarship offers from Florida InternationalUniversity, Florida State University,University of Illinois and University of SouthFlorida.

STEINBRENNER HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: ANDRES PEREZ-REINALDO (5TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 9-2

The Warriors finally had a breakout sea-son in 2015 under the tutelage of headcoach Andres Perez-Reinaldo. Thanks to apotent offense and an at-times smotheringdefense, Steinbrenner’s only two setbackslast season were against dynasty prep pro-grams in Manatee (Bradenton) High and Dr.Phillips (Orlando) High. On offense, quarter-back Collin Wray (56 percent completion,1,634 yards) returns, as do two of his fa-vorite targets in Brett Bitter (35 receptions,600 yards) and Carson Kaleo (34 recep-tions, 277 yards). Replacing the productionof 1,000-yard rusher Jayquese Dantley issomething the team will need to address.

On defense, Coach Perez-Reinaldo and hisstaff must find some players that can carrythe load, since the Warriors lose three lead-ing tacklers in Tyler Mirabella, Patrick Lukertand Zack Deitz.

WHARTON HIGH SCHOOLCOACH: DAVID MITCHELL (12TH YEAR)2015 RECORD: 8-2

The Wildcats enjoyed a successful 2015campaign, with sizable victories over thelikes of King High, Gaither High, WiregrassRanch and Leto High. However, it won’t beeasy to replicate the scoring outputs (atleast 30 points in seven games) from 2015.Coach Mitchell will have to replace quarter-back Bryce Martin, leading rusher MilesWilliams (1,102 yards, 10 TDs) and leadingreceiver Devontres Dukes (18 receptions,360 yards) from last year’s squad. They alsolost defensive stalwarts in linebackerHayden Parks (75 tackles) and defensivelineman Godey Coleus (six sacks). One pos-sible breakout candidate to watch istwo-way player Shannon King, who will bea junior. The powerful 5-foot-10, 210-pounder rushed for nearly 400 yards, adding6.9 yards per carry.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY

FILE PHOTOSThe Land O’ Lakes Gators are looking toavoid a third straight losing season. Amore manageable schedule in 2016should help.

The Sunlake Seahawks are looking tohave their seventh straight winning sea-son. To do so, Coach Bill Browning willhave to replace several starters on theoffensive line.

Wiregrass Ranch coach Mark Kantorenters year two of what is likely a lengthyrebuilding job. The Bulls haven’t had awinning season since 2010.

Steinbrenner football coach AndresPerez-Reinaldo is looking to build off theteam’s 9-2 campaign in 2015.

New Freedom High football coach FloydGraham is likely in for a rebuilding year, taking over a losing team (3-7) that lostseveral contributors.

In Gulfport, it seems, there really is some-thing for everyone.

Daniel Hodge found that out when hemoved from San Francisco to Gulfport near-ly a decade ago to live near family.

The freelance writer and disc jockey is

now vice president of the merchants’ associ-ation, and a Gulfport fan.

“It was a great move for a lot of reasons,”he said. “(Gulfport’s) charm has really gottena lot of notice and respect. We want to keepit small, quaint and colorful.”

To find out more about Gulfport, visitVisitGulfportFlorida.com.

If you’re looking for a day trip off thebeaten path, Gulfport is a destinationworth your time and travel.

It is a town with a sense of place rootedin Old Florida and often described as “a hid-den gem.”

But, this quaint historical fishing villageon the Boca Ciega Bay is far from hiddenthese days.

With a reviving waterfront district, a his-torical casino ballroom, art galleries, neighborhood bars and gourmet diningspots, Gulfport is being discovered as theplace to enjoy the old, and the new.

Rainbow-colored shops, boutiques andrestaurants along and around BeachBoulevard add texture to subtropical Florida, evoking another historical town to the south.

“I think what most come here for is theKey West lifestyle, before Key West becamecommercial,” said Scott Linde, president ofthe Gulf Port Merchants Association. “It con-veys remembrances of old Florida. It has anartsy feel to it. We have all ages, all lifestyleshere.”

Gulfport’s downtown charms are appar-ent during the community’s First Friday ArtWalks, which are year-round on the FirstFriday and Third Friday of the month, from 6p.m. to 10 p.m.

Beach and Shore boulevards are alivewith activities, as artists, crafters and liveperformers give visitors a chance to browse, shop and be entertained.

The next First Friday is May 6 from 6p.m. to 10 p.m.

Parking is free, and trolleys also are avail-able for this pet and family friendly event.

Something is always happening atGulfport, a town where the cheeky, fun-lov-ing gecko is the year-round mascot. Heemerged into the Gulfport spotlight in 2001with the GeckoFest and Mullet Mutiny.

In 2004, the gecko partnered with theGulfport Merchants Association to keep theannual party rolling.

On Aug. 5, there will be a Gecko ArtShow; on Aug. 13, the Gecko Pub Crawl; onAug. 27, a ball with the theme “20,000Geckos Under the Sea”; and, on Sept. 3, ablow-out street festival.

But, there is no need to wait for Geckofestivities to make a trip to Gulfport.

On an ordinary day, the town rolls outthe welcome mat.

Every Tuesday, fresh produce, cheese, honey and shrimp are on sale at the FreshMarket, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., on BeachBoulevard by the waterfront. Arts and crafts, live music and more than a dozen restau-rants add to the fun. Summer hours fromJune through September are from 9 a.m. to2 p.m.

Clothing swaps are on the secondTuesday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., as part of the Fresh Market.

In the fall, the Gulfport Historical Societycelebrates the town’s history with a monthof activities including the Flying Mullet 5K.The nonprofit also operates the GulfportHistory Museum at 5301 28th Ave., S.

The history museum is open to the pub-lic, with no admission charge, and featuresan impressive display of historical docu-ments and photographs from the town’shistory and its families, dating to the 1880s.

The museum also hosts occasional ex-hibits and walking tours of the town’sbrick-lined streets, and historical homes andbusinesses.

Other special events during the year in-clude Spring Fest to celebrate the changing

Fresh fruits, vegetables, honey, cheese and seafood are for sale at Gulfport’s Fresh Market, every Tuesday in the waterfront district.

The historical Peninsula Inn is a bou-tique hotel in the heart of Gulfport, dat-ing to 1904. Guests and the public alsocan dine at the hotel’s restaurant,Isabelle’s.
