After claiming the gold at the SpecialOlympics Florida State Summer Games inMay, a group of athletes from Land O’ Lakeswill trek to Los Angeles next summer to com-pete at the 2015 Special Olympics SummerWorld Games.

The team got the word on July 21 viaSkype during a surprise announcement in amini-auditorium at Land O’ Lakes HighSchool.

Coach Vicky King corralled members ofthe team to the meeting under the guise theywould be talking about their gold-medal per-

formance in the state competition at theESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in May.

But the athletes were really there to hearabout their selection as an 11-member con-tingent of the 15-member Team Florida.

They compete in Division 2 soccer, withseven athletes on each side of the ball. It is aunified team, meaning there are four SpecialOlympics athletes playing along with threepartners, who are there to provide help andsupport.

The team will join thousands of SpecialOlympics athletes from 170 nations to com-pete for international medals for a weekbeginning July 25, 2015. The games include21 Olympic-style sports.

School principalRic Mellin, who an-swered the Skype call,is delighted by thenews.

“Words can’t ex-press how excited Iam for these students,”he said. “They put atremendous amount ofeffort into preparingfor the local gamesand the state games, and I think the gritti-ness that they showedimpressed the selec-tion group.”

The details regard-ing costs aren’t yet in,so it is unclear howmuch the team mayneed to raise, Mellinsaid. Besides the trip toL.A., the team also is expecting to spend aweek in Indianapolis in a couple months tohelp prepare.

“If we do need to do some fundraising, that’ll be a wonderful opportunity for the lo-cals here in Land O’ Lakes to provide someadditional support,” Mellin said. “We wouldgreatly appreciate it. Our community has al-ways been wonderful when we’ve asked forthings in the past, and I’m sure they wouldstep up and help support these students aswell.”

Coach King is excited about the experi-ences that await her athletes.

“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime,” shesaid.

King is happy the team is being rewardedfor its dedication.

“We worked really, really hard this year,”the coach said.

Valerie Lundin, one of the directors forPasco County Special Olympics, said Land O’

Lakes High has an exceptional SpecialOlympics program. The unified teams giveathletes with disabilities and those withoutthem a chance to gain a better understand-ing of each other.

“The premise is they get to know one an-other, they partner together, they traveltogether,” she said. “So, when they’re in themall or the cafeteria, they’re friends.”

Ghaida Shehab said her son, Hassan, whoplays on the team, is “very happy” that theteam has been selected to compete. Afterhearing the news, he told Shehab: “See mom?Are you proud of me?”

“I think it’s good for him,” Shehab said, adding she plans to go the games, as well.

Tommy Guglielmello, one of the team’spartners, said he enjoys the role he plays onthe team.

“The partners help the game movealong,” Guglielmello said. “It’s awesome beingout there when they score.”

These athletes are ready to take on the world

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. Andwhen there’s a need, there’s BeverlyLedbetter.

The retired educator has made Dade Cityher home since the days of Richard Nixon, inspiring thousands of students at PascoJunior High School and later Pasco HighSchool for more than three decades. Alongthe way, Ledbetter found herself in the mostunexpected jobs, whether it be coaching theschool’s soccer team, or helping educatorsthrough her work with the teachers’ union.

It was always impossible for Ledbetter toturn down a calling when she was needed, and that’s what attracted her to WillWeatherford’s state House seat — one that hasher heading into a November contest againstformer Zephyrhills mayor Danny Burgess.

“There are a lot of things I see with ourlawmakers that are very frustrating,” shesaid. “I’m particularly concerned with thelack of respect in Tallahassee.”

The polarizing political atmosphere thathas practically crippled Washington hascrept to the state level, making it impossiblefor someone to work with anyone they dis-agree with. That means Democrats — and agood chunk of the state’s population theyrepresent — are being marginalized, withno one willing to break through and findways to come together.

“One of the things that you learn as ateacher is to look at both sides of the issue,”Ledbetter said. “There are Republicans whohave good ideas, just as there are Democratswho have good ideas, and they should beacknowledged.”

Ledbetter has always considered herselfpolitically minded, and has made a numberof trips to Tallahassee over the years lobby-

ing for education. Her husband, MichaelLedbetter, was a Pasco County commission-er in the late 1970s, and the two actuallymet during a Young Democrats meeting atthe University of South Florida several yearsbefore that.

Ledbetter actually considered running

for school board, but realized quickly thatshe can make a greater impact overall byhelping to set policy at the state level.

Many observers believe the advantage inthe House race belongs to Burgess, a Dade Citylawyer who was Zephyrhills’ youngest mayor. It’s a heavily Republican district already, andBurgess has strong name recognition — espe-cially in eastern Pasco County.

Ledbetter, however, is hardly a stranger tovoters. As a teacher and a coach, she has di-rectly touched the lives of many in the area, which could help her draw votes from be-yond Democrats. In fact, many of the peoplewho signed her petitions to get on the bal-lot were Republicans, she said.

Raising money is going to be tough, how-ever.

“My friends are teachers, many of themwho haven’t had raises in a long time,”Ledbetter said. “When I get that check froma fellow teacher, and it’s usually around $25,it gives me a warm feeling. But I also know

it’s an investment that makes me feel deter-mined to go out and work my butt off, andprove that their trust in me is well-placed.”

Education is one of Ledbetter’s top prior-ities, but it’s not the only one she wants totackle in Tallahassee. She also is pushing toexpand Medicare coverage in the state tohelp get more residents health care throughthe federal Affordable Care Act. Gov. RickScott, a Republican who opposes the federalhealth care program unofficially known asObamacare, has refused to expandMedicare, citing a concern that the cost todo that will fall back on Florida taxpayers.

“How can you look a parent in the eyeand tell them their family can’t have medicalattention?” Ledbetter said. “I taught kids whohad teeth rotting out, and kids who neededglasses. Luckily, in Dade City, we have somevery generous doctors and dentists whowere willing to step up and help, but noteverywhere is like Dade City.”

Ledbetter also wants to spur economicgrowth not by giving companies largeamounts of money and tax breaks to locatehere, but to help train the workforce so theycan attract higher-wage jobs to the state.

“Small businesses are the backbone ofour economy,” she said. “When you can givethem a leg up, and give them the supportthey need, they will create the jobs.”

Ledbetter is a lifelong Democrat, but saysshe would prefer to label herself a “practicalrealist.” That means acknowledging herNovember election is a tough one to win,but also knows that when it comes to vot-ers, they can sometimes do the unexpected.

“It’s going to be difficult, I know that,”she said. “But I believe in standing up forpeople who can’t necessarily do it for them-selves, whether it’s the elderly, children, orsimply people who need health insurance. That’s why I’m a Democrat.”

MICHAEL HINMAN/STAFF PHOTOBeverly Ledbetter says she’s always beenmotivated to find a voice for those who getpushed aside, and learned as a teacher theimportance of understanding all sides of anissue. It’s her drive, she says, that will gether to Tallahassee.

CHAMBERS TO HOST CANDIDATE FORUM

The Central Pasco Chamber ofCommerce is joining forces with the Trinity-Odessa Chamber of Commerce to sponsor acandidate forum for both the Pasco CountyCommission and the Pasco County schoolboard July 30 beginning at 6 p.m.

It will take place at KeystoneCommunity Church, 21010 State Road 54 inLutz.

Anyone wishing to ask questions ofthose running for the District 2 county com-mission race or the District 5 school boardrace can email them to [email protected].

District 2, which would replace the retir-ing Pat Mulieri, is a Republican raceinvolving former state Rep. Ken Littlefield,Wesley Chapel entrepreneur Mike Moore, and Zephyrhills financial analyst BobRobertson.

The District 5 school board race is be-tween Steve Luikart and Marc Yacht.

The first step in finding out who will re-place Pat Mulieri on the Pasco CountyCommission begins at the Aug. 26 primary. There voters will choose between three po-litically focused men — Ken Littlefield, MikeMoore and Bob Robertson — to representRepublicans in the November election.

But a primary win for any one of them isjust the beginning. The eventual GOP nomi-nee will have to win over voters one moretime after August, and prove he’s the bettercandidate than the lone Democrat in therace, a Land O’ Lakes social worker who saysshe wants to return the county govern-ment’s focus back to helping people.

Erika Remsberg works long hours forPasco County Schools, helping some of themore than 1,800 students stay focused ontheir studies, despite the fact they don’thave a place they can call home.

“You lost your home, you lost yourfriends, you lost your teachers and class-mates, and you probably lost all your stuff ifyou were evicted from somewhere,”Remsberg said. “Your family is focused onsurvival, not necessarily reading and math, and all of that can have a tremendous nega-tive impact on their education.”

Remsberg and her husband, Philip, moved to Pasco County 13 years ago to becloser to her parents. She was born in theBronx, but raised in Long Island, graduatingfrom New York University and marryingsoon after.

Remsberg never imagined herself run-ning for any type of elected office, but whenshe learned Mulieri was retiring, she fearedone of the lone voices for the issues closestto her heart was going to be silenced.

“I have been very vocal that the countyhas not done enough to coordinate socialservice, and they haven’t done enough to

deal with the critical needs in the county,”Remsberg said. “I think Pat Mulieri has donethe best job in trying to advocate and listen, but now the best advocate that we have isnow retiring.”

The commission has been plagued withbitter disputes over recent months, rangingfrom a park one commissioner wants toturn into a tourist attraction, to how the

county is going to pay for much-neededroad improvements and new constructionprojects, she said. In the process, money hasbeen wasted on large corporations —includ-ing some that never made it here, like T.Rowe Price — but smaller businesses havebeen ignored.

“We need to start from the base up, notfrom the top down,” Remsberg said. “Youdon’t give a corporation millions of dollarswhile failing to help people get the trans-portation they need, the jobs and careercenters they need, or the income they needto survive. You want to give tax breaks tocompanies that are going to pay at or abovethe median income, and not companies thatare just going to pay minimum wage.”

The key to growing jobs and salaries isthrough workforce development, Remsbergsaid. County officials are missing a numberof grant opportunities available to them, some which could help smaller businessesgrow and enhance the work force at the

same time through projects like apprentice-ship programs.

“There are always ways to reach morethan one goal,” Remsberg said. “These smallbusinesses might need some help, and manyof these people need job experience. It’s away to give something back to everyone.”County officials also have to spend moretime learning how to spend money smartly, and less time getting worked up about smallincreases in taxes to help pay for it,Remsberg said.

“I hear a lot about the millage rate, andeveryone gets very excited when taxes getraised,” she said. “But many times, we’re onlytalking about increases of like $20 a year. That’s a small amount of money that candramatically impact programs that are beingstrained or completely ignored otherwise.”

Remsberg also believes there are notenough sheriff’s deputies on the streets, andmore money is needed to help both law en-forcement and fire-rescue. Public safetymust become a higher priority, because acounty cannot grow properly unless its resi-dents feel safe.

So far, Remsberg has raised a little morethan $3,000 for her campaign, a fraction ofthe more than $111,600 combined for thethree Republicans in the race. But winnersaren’t always determined by how muchmoney a candidate has in the bank, andRemsberg won’t be discouraged.

“I am a social worker, so I love going forthe underdog,” she said. “It’s just that thistime it’s me, which is a new experience forme. But I’m good with grassroots efforts andcommunity organization, and I’m gettingout wherever I can to share a message ofhow we all need to work together.

“We can’t put a roof on a home with nofoundation, and no walls,” she said. “We needto take care of our responsibilities when itcomes to helping everyone, and only thencan we truly start growing.”

Who is the best A/C manufacturer?Surprising to many, the top 20 brands are made by just eight manufacturers. There is almost no difference inquality and performance between same-level units made by Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Lennox, Amana, Bryant or Goodman. It’s the installation team that assembles the unit at your home that makes the difference. Proper installation and maintenance are more important to the performance of an A/C system, than the unit itself.

“With this grant, we are able to get theminto housing,” Scheckler said. “We can paytheir first month’s rent, we can pay their elec-tric deposit, water deposit, the securitydeposit.”

There is a drawback, though. The organi-zation must raise matching funds for thegrant money it spends, Scheckler said. Thegrant also requires applicants to fill out aform that’s about 20 pages long.

“We don’t make the rules. We strictlyabide by the rules,” she said.

Still, the project is thrilled to be able tohelp more people, Scheckler said. The grant isaimed at preventing homelessness and get-ting people without housing back intohomes.

Sixty percent of the grant is earmarkedfor getting people back into housing, shesaid, and the need is great.

“We had 151 homeless, registered stu-dents, just in Zephyrhills,” Scheckler said. Atany given time, there are 1,500 to 2,000 regis-tered homeless students in Pasco County.

One of the biggest challenges is finding aplace for these people to live thanks to pastevictions and credit issues, she said.“Landlords won’t step up.”

“If you know landlords who own proper-ty, ask them to trust us,” Scheckler said. “Ourorganization is backing these people. We fol-low them for six months. I do a casemanagement every 30 days on everyone thatwe assist.”

Despite challenges, Scheckler said her vol-unteer work has moments of sheer joy.

“The biggest thing is, when you walk upto this client and you go, ‘Here’s your lease,’”she said, with her voice breaking and tears inher eyes, “I do get real emotional.”

A couple of weeks ago, the organizationmoved a young woman and her father intoan apartment. The woman has special needs

and the pair had been living in a truck.“Habitat for Humanity stepped up and do-

nated the furniture,” Scheckler said. “When Iwalked them in the apartment, I told (them),‘This is yours. This is all yours. The furniture. The TV. Everything.’ How do you put a priceon something like that?”

While many youths are couch-surfing tokeep a roof over their heads, there also areelderly people who are in desperate need,Scheckler added.

“We have an 87-year-old woman whocouldn’t pay her water bill. She was living offof pool water, drinking water out of a pool,”she said. “Did we step up and help her?Absolutely.”

After telling the group about TheSamaritan Project’s mission, Scheckler wentinto her fundraising mode.

“Any of you women in here wear jewel-ry?” she asked, to set up a pitch for afundraiser planned for Aug. 10. She also urgedthem to get involved in the Harvest Festival, another fundraiser on Nov. 1, or to hit thelinks on Feb. 7, at its annual golf benefit.

Scheckler frequently speaks at churchesand civic organizations to drum up supportfor the cause.

“What we really, really, really need is sup-port of the community,” she said. “Our mottois ‘Working together to make a better com-munity.’ That’s what we want to do.”

And Scheckler said she’ll do whatever shecan to make that happen.

“I am not too proud to beg,” she said. “Ican cry. I can do whatever it takes.”

into the office, applying for assistance,”Scheckler said.

She felt compelled to get involved.“My dad is a minister. I was raised that we

were to help those less fortunate,” Schecklersaid. “Not to turn our backs on them, not tostereotype them, but to help them.”

The Zephyrhills woman understands howit feels to struggle.

“When my husband and I moved up in1982, we did it for a reason. We were losingeverything,” she said.

Her husband, a semitrailer driver hadbeen through two major gas wars.

“This was our fresh start,” Scheckler said.“That’s why this project is so important tome. I have been there. I know firsthand whatit is to lose everything.”

The Samaritan Project has been helpingpeople since 2008. It operates on donationsand fundraisers.

“We assist people with past due rent andutilities,” Scheckler said.

The organization keeps its operational

costs low.“We do not pay rent. We have one over-

head (cost), that is our Internet, because asyou know in this day of technology, every-thing relies on the Internet.”

The project has spent more than twoyears in the St. Joseph’s Catholic ChurchEducation Building in Zephyrhills in 500square feet of space, including the bathroomand air-conditioning room.

“My private office is the bathroom,” shesaid, noting whenever she has to make a pri-vate call to a landlord or utility company orsomewhere else, she steps into the bathroomto do it.

But the organization is moving to muchlarger quarters at 5722 Eighth St., inZephyrhills. Last week, the Samaritan Projectsigned a two-year lease, rent-free lease for the1,400-square-foot home, thanks to the gen-erosity of a local couple.

In addition to its own fundraising efforts, the organization received a $76,000Emergency Solutions Grant earlier this yearfrom the Florida Department of Children andFamilies and the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development.

HELPING, from page 1

attendance has ranged from four to eightstudents. Those figures have required VSAFlorida to keep it going with other funds,Finklea said. They also provide scholarshipsbased on need for families who cannot af-ford the monthly cost.

While the class is caught in a numbersgame, Finklea said the benefits go way be-yond the balance sheet.

“They learn self confidence, they learnteamwork, collaboration, tolerance, under-standing,” she said.

And since the students are often asked to

describe or explain their art, they learn toexpress themselves in a variety of ways.

While the Land O’ Lakes class attendanceis troubling, that location isn’t alone. Manyof their locations struggle with attendance,Finklea said. She believes there are severalreasons why the programs don’t always gaintraction, from a lack of societal emphasis onthe arts, to scheduling conflicts, to parentsnot even knowing the classes exist.

But the ones who attend appreciate theprogram, and Finklea said the training theteachers receive to work with special needsstudents contributes to the positive feedback.

While Finklea and VSA Florida are disap-pointed with the turnout so far, they aren’t

giving up. VSA Florida will continue advertis-ing and promoting the classes, and is workingwith a consultant to find other opportunitiesto get the word out to the community.

After a scheduled summer break in August, the classes will begin again in September, andFinklea said they’ll have roughly six months toget the program running at a higher capacitybefore some tough decisions have to be made.

Right now she believes many people withspecial needs are missing out on the benefitsof the class, and if it has to be cancelled or re-located, the existing students will join them.

“They’re probably missing out on a hugechance for creative expression and probablya chance to enhance their cognitive and so-

cial outcomes, which ultimately develops astronger quality of life,” Finklea said.

That outcome would disappoint Megan, and her mother would have a tough time re-placing the activity and the enjoyment shegets out of it.

“My daughter would lose out because Idon’t know what I would do,” Violetta said.“She’s older, and it’s hard to find somethingfor her that’s close.”

Siblings of special needs students alsoare encouraged to join and participate withthem in the classes. Children under 7 mustbe accompanied by an adult.

portant for the community,” said MikeSchultz, president and chief executive ofFlorida Hospital West Florida Region, duringa check presentation at the Fowler Avenuemuseum last week. We believe our invest-ment will help support MOSI as it movesforward, to create long-term sustainability ofthe museum, and further (develop) futurescientists and health care professionalswhile helping develop the work force in thegreater Tampa Bay area.

“We want to make a difference.”Access to medical professionals in this

way is something many don’t get to experi-ence otherwise, especially in suburban areas

like northern Hillsborough and southernPasco counties, said Molly Demeulenaere,MOSI’s vice president of growth.

“A lot of hospitals don’t open their oper-ating rooms, and we’ll be working withfamilies in Pasco County to help make thatpossible,” she said. “Younger kids especiallyare going to have access to this informationbefore they start to figure out what theywant to do for a living, and (it) allows themto spark that interest at a much earlier age.”

Where the surgeries will take place de-pends on Florida Hospital itself,Demeulenaere said. They could be hostedfrom Tampa, Wesley Chapel, evenZephyrhills.

The Imax dome image is 10 times largerthan a conventional 35mm frame, and three

MOSI, from page 1 times larger than a standard 70mm frame, museum officials said. The dome theater of-fers a six-channel, high-fidelity motionpicture sound system manufactured bySonics Associates Inc., as well as a projector, which when it was installed, was one of themost advanced, using technology to keepthe picture steady and prevent film hiccups.

MOSI always has prided itself as a hands-on museum, bringing science directly topeople who visit.

“When people think of a museum, theynormally think of these big open spaceswhere you don’t touch anything,”Demeulenaere said. “But museums are a truelab of creativity and education, and play avital role in the community as a whole.”

MOSI did not say when work would

begin on the theater, and it may have to waitits turn in line as other science centers areundergoing similar transitions and there arefew companies qualified to do the work. Most of the money donated by FloridaHospital will go into the “transformation,” asMOSI is calling it, although remaining fundscan be used to help supplement other pro-grams at the museum.

“Florida Hospital is demonstrating truecommunity leadership, and I think weshould really thank our lucky stars forFlorida Hospital and all the work that theydo in our communities throughout Florida,”MOSI board chair Robert Thomas said. “I justcan’t begin to tell you how important thisis, and how thrilled we are to have them as apartner in the future of this organization.”

Peggy Boyd, owner of SurgicalAlternative, has found a way to endpain without costly and traumaticsurgical procedures. “Mywork goes far beyondmassage therapy,” saysPeggy. “A better term formy work would be struc-tural therapy.”

She graduated from mas-sage therapy school in1998 and started outdoing sports massage. Her work moved to awhole new level as shebegan to learn neuro-muscular methods. Shesaw significant results asshe focused on rehabilitative mas-sage.

“I began to see lasting changes inpeople’s bodies, in their posture andin their attitude toward their dailylife,” says Peggy. “Their quality oflife improved as their pain was goneas a result of our work.”

“I want to help people eliminatepain, not just temporarily as is oftenwhat happens with standard mas-sage therapy,” says Peggy. “I want toget to the source of the problem andrehabilitate it. Then the pain willgo away long-term.”

“We want people to know this typeof therapy exists,” says Peggy. “Wecan help people avoid extremephysical actions like surgery. Thistype of therapy also works well inconjunction with other non-inva-sive therapies like chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc.”

The therapy as Surgical Alternativeis designed to help people beforethey need surgery. They also recog-nize that sometimes surgery is neces-sary. This therapy can help clientsrecuperate faster, reduce their painafter surgery and help them get backto a normal range of motion pain-free.

“My focus is on rehabilitative work, helping people with injuries, andwith those who want to preventproblems,” says Peggy. “We prideourselves on educating our clientsabout their bodies and helping themto see how their routines may becontributing to their painful condi-tions.”

Repetitive use injuries are a bigproblem they see all the time. Thetherapists at Surgical Alternativehelp their clients understand wherethe source of their pain really iscoming from. The cause of their

pain is not necessarilywhere the symptomsshow up.

“We take the time tounderstand our clientslifestyle and work rou-tines which oftencontribute greatly totheir condition,” saysPeggy. “We canreverse many condi-tions without sur-gery.” “Call us andmake us explain toyou how we can help

release your pain,” says Peggy.

“We also see clients who fallbetween the cracks,” says Peggy.“The doctor can’t find anythingwrong, but the pain is real. We canhelp clients find the source of theproblem and release the pain longterm rather than simply masking itwith unnecessary medications.” Anexample of this is hip pain. Manytimes it is tightened muscles that arekeeping a person’s structure out ofbalance. This improper alignmentcan cause uneven wearing at thejoints resulting in pain.

Surgical Alternative offers packagesas well as a monthly maintenanceprogram for those who want to keeptheir body balanced. Their typicalsession is 90 minutes and cost $120.Peggy has been in business for 12years and at her current location fora little under 4 years. They haveclients as young as 6 years of age andsome well into their 90’s. “We seeeveryone from triathletes with plan-tar fasciitis, to the person whom haslost range of motion and thinks thattheir body should not feel like this,”says Peggy.

Peggy and her staff want to helppeople get beyond merely existingand into truly living.

They’re having an open house onSaturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to4 p.m. They will also be celebratingthe grand opening of their newstore, Upward Spiral, where they’llbe offering products to supporthealth and healing. They’ll haveproduct samples for you and give-aways too.

Avoid surgery. Eradicate pain.

Before setting up her cruise busi-ness in Tarpon Springs, SuzanneUpchurch and her business part-

ner traveled the entire west coast of Floridalooking for the perfect spot.

They had a cruise and ferry business inMassachusetts where they did history andlighthouse tours, and they were looking fora place where they could operate duringthe winter.

“We went through Tarpon Springs, all ofthe way to Key West,” Upchurch said.

They came back to Tarpon Springs be-cause that’s where their boat — the IslandStar — had been built, and they felt at homewith the Anclote Key lighthouse and thenearby power plant.

The lighthouse had the same structuralform as the lighthouse in Marblehead,Massachusetts, Upchurch explained. And,the power plant is a replica of the one inSalem, Massachusetts.

Their company, Sun Line Cruises, startedoperating seasonally in Florida 14 years ago. They brought with them the historical andlighthouse tours as well as ferry service.

“Of course, the season is much shorterup there,” Upchurch said. “It gets cold realfast up there.”

She decided to come to Tarpon Springsseasonally to break into an area with some-thing that was not being offered, Upchurchsaid. As it turns out, they decided to offereco-tours, which Upchurch thoroughly en-joys because she said it allows her to shareher love of nature.

People who take her cruises can counton an affordable trip, which combines thepleasure of gliding across water and havinga chance to learn about the area’s historyand its marine life. Sometimes Upchurchnarrates the trip. Other times, the Floridanaturalist or marine biologist on her staffdoes the honors.

Their goal is to give their passengers anenjoyable and informative experience, saidKathy Poreda, who sells cruise tickets froma colorful shack at 18 Dodecanese Blvd., inTarpon Springs.

Patrons boarding the Island Star hail fromall over the world, said Aaron Kalwa, one ofthe ship’s captains. The company’s websitegets hits from places such as Ukraine andBelgium, Upchurch said.

A couple of years ago, a woman fromChicago rushed up to the ticket windowand exclaimed, “We found you,” Upchurchrecalled. The woman’s doctor had recom-mended the cruise after learning thecustomer was planning a visit to TarponSprings.

Virtually every ride offers passengers achance to see an assortment of winged crea-tures, such as roseate spoonbills, terns, ospreys, egrets and pelicans. They also hear

about mangrove systems, fresh springs, theestuary’s role as a marine nursery, and thehistory of the Anclote Key lighthouse.

The tour also includes commentaryabout the history of Tarpon Springs and itssponge docks, marine repair work, ship-building, and fishing industry.

Every cruise, however, is unique. On aMarch 2 outing, for instance, a passengersaw something strange floating on thewater, said Kalwa, who was steering theship that day.

“We were on our way out of AncloteRiver,” he said. “As soon as we got out to St.Joseph’s Sound, a passenger pointed outsomething floating in the water. We stoppedto get a better look at it, and it looked it wasa turtle having some distress, struggling.

“It was a real busy day that day and itwas in the middle of the channel, so we hadto stop the boat. We were scared that he

was going to get hit by other boats. So, westopped the boat, kind of protected him,”Kalwa said.

The ship’s first mate was able to getclose, but she was unable to lift the turtleinto the boat. So Kalwa, who has a burlybuild, had the first mate steer the boat, whilehe grabbed the turtle and pulled it aboard.

It was no easy feat. The green sea turtle, given the name Bubba Gump, weighed near-ly 60 pounds.

The cruise company called theClearwater Marine Aquarium who pickedup the turtle and nursed it back to health.Bubba Gump was released into the Gulf ofMexico from Honeymoon Island on July 8.

Sun Line Cruises offers a 90-minutecruise, a two-hour cruise, sunset cruises, group tours, weddings, special events andsea scatterings.

The two-hour cruise makes a half-hourstop at Anclote Key, which is the northern-most barrier island in the Gulf of Mexico.

“We do a lot of school group tours. Wehave a marine science club. It’s set up fordifferent age groups,” Upchurch said. Topicsinclude marine and mammals, sharks andstingrays, and tsunamis and hurricanes.

As Kalwa carries passengers from thedock in Tarpon Springs out to Anclote Keyand back, the ship captain gets a kick out ofseeing guests get excited when they spotdolphins leaping out of the water or watchmanatees glide by.

During a recent cruise, passengers got athrill when they saw a single dolphin surfac-ing during the early part of their cruise, andthen saw the telltale fins of a small group ofdolphins on the way back.

They made their way from one side ofthe boat to the other, trying to capture the

moment on their smartphones.Besides having ticket prices that are

under $20, Sun Line Cruises also rewards re-peat customers through a frequent cruiserprogram.

“Each time you visit us, we put a stickeron your card,” Upchurch said, noting visitorscan only receive one sticker per visit regard-less of the size of their party.

“At last count, we had 670 full frequentcruiser cards turned in,” Upchurch said. “Wehave one particular couple who is on theirseventh frequent cruiser card.”

When a high school football team has toreplace 22 graduating seniors, it can be dev-astating to their prospects the followingyear.

But in Steinbrenner High School’s case, itmight be just what they needed.

“The attitude and mentality of everybodyis that they want to come and work hard. They saw what we struggled with last year, players just giving up,” said Andres Bautista, who plays on the defensive line. “Those sen-iors, they’re gone, so now we feel we have abetter chance of achieving goals.”

Bautista, now a senior himself, is just oneof two players who are entering their fourthyear with the Warriors, and he believes theroster changes will improve their fortunes.Too many seniors didn’t give it their all, did-n’t respond to challenging times, or simplydidn’t perform up to their ability, he said.

As a result, the team finished a disap-pointing 3-7 overall, and 2-3 in the districtlast season.

Head Coach Andres Perez-Reinaldo, nowentering his third year at the helm, isn’t tooconcerned with dwelling on last year’s for-tunes. He’d rather take what he can fromthe past and apply it toward a more success-ful future.

“Every year is different in its own way,”Perez-Reinaldo said. “We look at last year’ssuccesses and struggles, learn from them, and work on the new team and the newyear.”

The Warriors gave up a district-high 303points, but they had problems on both sidesof the ball. The offense also struggled, bothfailing to score and committing turnovers, which put the defense in bad situations.

And when put in those situations, cover-age issues allowed the opposing team’soffense to capitalize, Bautista said.

But that doesn’t mean Steinbrenner did-n’t have significant bright spots. TheWarriors were ranked second in kickoffsand punt returns. Not second in the district, nor the region. Steinbrenner was rankedsecond in those categories ahead of nearlyevery other school in the state.

Perez-Reinaldo believes that gives theteam a significant advantage and can helpimprove their record in 2014.

“We hope to continue that,” Perez-Reinaldo said of the high special teamsranking. “If you can win those two — spe-cial teams and defense — everything elsewill fall into place.”

Perez also believes his receiving corpswill be difference-makers this season. Hecredits Coach Michael Bosco for his workwith the unit, and believes the wide re-

ceivers complement each other well. While it’s too early to know how every-

thing will fall into place, Perez-Reinaldo likeswhat he’s seen so far. A good work ethic andsome success on the field have given him

some optimism headed into the regular sea-son.

“I think it’s important for kids to learnhow to compete and then learn how towin,” he said. “This off-season, our team has

really come together through workouts andseven-on-seven tournaments. We won ourfirst seven-on-seven tournament ever atSteinbrenner this summer, and I see that asevidence that our team is learning how towin.

“Now it’s a matter to translating that toFriday nights.”

Bautista is looking forward to gettingback to playing on Friday nights as well, be-cause he missed a few of them last season. Atorn meniscus in his right knee ended his2013 campaign after just five games, and hehad to watch the team struggle from thesideline. Now, after a successful return in aspring game (Bautista says his knee is 100percent), he’s looking forward to providingthe senior leadership he feels was lackinglast season.

And Bautista believes the best way toprovide that leadership is to show that he’sdedicated to seeing Steinbrenner reach thepostseason for the first time in his highschool career.

“That’s one of our biggest goals, is mak-ing the playoffs,” Bautista said. “I’m going toplay how I’ve been playing since freshmanyear: Playing hard and going 110 percent.

“I love football.”

MICHAEL MURILLO/STAFF PHOTOAndres Bautista is serious about providing leadership in his senior season, and workinghard to get Steinbrenner High School’s football team into the playoffs.

Just last weekend, tens of thousands offans converged on San Diego for its annualComic-Con event, paying obscene amountsof money for travel, hotel and tickets just toget inside.

But this weekend, local residents can gettheir geek on. And they don’t even have tospend a dime.

The Library Anime and Manga EnthusiastConvention, more affectionately known asLAMECon, kicks off Aug. 2 at the Land O’Lakes Library and at the Land O’ LakesRecreation Center on Collier Parkway. Thefree event attracted more than 700 peoplelast year, and organizer Paul Stonebridge sayshis goal is to top 1,000 this year.

“Our central audience is teens and 20-somethings, so it’s like the 14-to-30 crowd,”Stonebridge said. “But it’s really open foreverybody. We have stuff for kids, and even a‘Game of Thrones’ panel for adults. We’ve re-ally doubled our convention size this year.”

LAMECon got its start six years ago inHudson before moving to Land O’ Lakes inlater years. It provides a way for young peo-ple to celebrate their love of anime andmanga — more or less Japanese comics andanimation — without spending the kind ofmoney expected at larger conventions likeMetrocon, held earlier this month in down-town Tampa.

“We’re pretty far from the conventions inSouth Tampa and Orlando, and there are alot of people in Pasco who simply can’t af-ford it,” Stonebridge said. “These are mainly

high schoolers and college kids, and theydesperately wanted to go. And now theyhave something they can go to.”

Although food and games are one way toattract people to conventions, Stonebridgesays it’s the panels hitting popular topicsamong fans that draw the most attention. This year, LAMECon will have two tracts thatwill include discussions like the aforemen-tioned Emmy-nominated HBO series “Gameof Thrones,” as well as trivia, Asian horrorand Japanese culture.

There will even be a panel featuringreadings from bad fan-fiction — stories setin the universe of popular television shows, movies and even anime and games, writtenexclusively by fans.

One feature this year is an achievementsystem designed to encourage attendees toparticipate as much as possible. More than50 achievement badges are available, whichcan be earned from attending panels, askingquestions, visiting vendors, and simply just

showing up.Hosting a convention is not

cheap, and LAMECon doesn’tearn any money from the typicalways conventions generate rev-enue like ticket sales or vendorrental fees. In fact, local business-es can set up and offer wares forfree.

LAMECon is funded throughgrants and donations, as well assponsors like Publix SuperMarkets and the DeBartolo FamilyFoundation, Stonebridge said. Theconvention also offers premiummemberships for a small dona-tion, which can include food,T-shirts and other offers.

Conventions like this haveearned a lot of new respect overthe years, growing from the earlydays of Star Trek conventions thatwere typically ridiculed in themainstream. The success of showslike “Game of Thrones” and the“Lord of the Rings” film trilogyhas helped that, Stonebridge said.

But it’s the comics entertain-ment company Marvel thatdeserves a lot of the credit, hesaid.

“Marvel has had a huge handin all of this, more than anyoneelse,” Stonebridge said. “All thecomic boom movies, those havebeen in the mainstream. And soit’s OK to like comics and videogames now.”

attack, he chose St. Joseph’s Hospital-North to repair

the damage.

St. Joseph’s Hospital-North specializes in treating

heart attack patients and, when necessary, ensures

rapid transfer to the catheterization lab for
