A trio of food court restaurants at theTampa Premium Outlets is slated for com-pletion by Oct. 5, about three weeks beforethe mall’s opening day.

Green Leafs, Bananas Smoothies &Frozen Yogurt, and South Philly Steaks &Fries are a package deal for EclipseBuilding Corp. The South Florida-basedcompany, with additional locations in FortLauderdale and Tampa, is a frequent con-tractor at malls built by Simon PropertyGroup, the developers behind the outletmall at State Road 56 and the Interstate 75interchange.

The mall will have 110 outlet stores in-cluding Michael Kors, Gymboree, J. Crew,Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and PacSun.

Franchisee Raitom LLC hired Eclipse tobuild the three gourmet eateries in themall’s food court, which represent about40 percent of the mall’s food court.

The grouping of these particular eater-ies is a first for Raitom, which hopes tomarket them similarly at other malls.

“They all kind of complement eachother,” said Todd Whalen, founder and presi-dent of Eclipse.

Green Leafs specializes in fast food, healthy dining with fresh made-to-orderand signature salads, wraps, grilled paninisand homemade soups. Bananas Smoothiescreates fruit smoothies and nonfat yogurttreats. South Philly serves a heartier menuwith classic cheese steaks, salads, loadedpotatoes and potato skins.

Eclipse is bidding on contracts for retailvendors at the outlet mall as well as anAsian-themed food court eatery, also part ofRaitom’s franchises. With that contract,Eclipse would be responsible for 65 per-cent of the food court.

Other Eclipse clients include For Eyes, J.McLaughlin, Build-A-Bear, Fresh HealthyCafé and Perfumania.

Whalen said his company takes aunique approach in its bidding by offeringa two-year warranty including maintenanceservices. The industry standard generally isfor one-year warranties, he said.

“We just keep the place looking brandnew,” Whalen said.

The Oct. 5 completion date for theeateries allows time to stock the restau-rants and train employees, he added.

“It’s going to be a very, very excitingshopping experience for everyone,” Whalensaid.

New volunteer teams expand Sheriff’s Office’s reachBy Michael [email protected]

Representatives of the Pasco CountySheriff’s Office are preparing to patrol areawaters, respond to natural disasters and in-vestigate crime scenes.

But they aren’t deputies or detectives. They’re regular citizens taking part in

one of the Sheriff’s Office’s three new vol-unteer programs.

The Volunteer Corps Marine Crime Unit, the Volunteer Agriculture Response Teamand the Forensic Services Volunteer Teamare accepting applications from studentswho are studying related courses in collegeand from anyone else who is interested intaking an active role in helping the county.Volunteers will undergo a backgroundcheck and fingerprinting, and must be avail-able for a minimum number of hours eachmonth.

“I think this is going to be a great addi-tion. It’s going to be a wonderfulopportunity to get people involved andhelping out in the community,” said SusanMiller, a forensic shift supervisor at thePasco County Sheriff’s Office ForensicServices department. Volunteers for her de-partment will need to be available for aminimum of 16 hours a month and will bedispatched to crime scenes to assistdeputies.

It is a hands-on method of lending sup-port to the Sheriff’s Office, but there arelimitations. The marine unit isn’t authorizedto pursue or board any vehicles. They usetheir own craft to patrol neighborhood wa-terways and report any suspicious activityto the Sheriff’s Office, much like a neighbor-hood watch program — but this one’s onthe water.

The agriculture team will work on mend-ing fences, and corralling and handlinglivestock and other animals in the event of adisaster situation.

The forensics team will work on proper-ty crimes such as auto burglaries. Their jobwill be to collect information, fingerprintsand any related evidence at the scene.

Forensics team volunteers will receivespecific training related to their duties,Miller said. She worked with other supervi-

sors to create a 40-hour course that volun-teers will complete. They’ll learn the scienceand processing procedures regarding finger-printing, applicable photographyinformation, and how to identify and collectrelevant evidence.

Miller also expects them to learn thatforensics work is interesting, but not the ac-tion-filled, drama seen on popular televisionshows.

It’s not glamorous work, either, Millersaid. “You’re really out there working hard.”

Crimes aren’t neatly solved in an hour, and there’s a lot more paperwork thanyou’ll find on the television screen, but itstill can be an enjoyable experience forthose interested in the field, she said.

Volunteers will be dispatched to crimescenes and will help the county with themany auto burglaries that occur on a daily

basis. Miller said there were around 1,500such incidents in Pasco County during thepast year.

While it’s a new program, there aresome volunteers already taking the course, and a small number in the field for her de-partment, Miller said. She’s pleased withthe results so far, and hopes more peopletake advantage to learn new skills and vol-unteer for the Sheriff’s Office in ameaningful way.

“It’s going to be great to have the helpand to have the added presence in the com-munity,” she said.

For information about the new volunteergroups, call the Pasco Sheriff’s OfficeHuman Resources Department at (727) 844-7791 or (800) 854-2862, ext. 7791.

The United Way of Pasco has distributedthousands of dollars in school supplies col-lected through its record-breaking “Stuff theBus for Teachers” campaign.

The response was particularly notablebecause Pasco County has faced seriousflooding problems in many communitiesduring recent weeks, according to a newsrelease from the United Way of Pasco.

Pasco County Schools SuperintendentKurt Browning was among the 500 volun-teers who pitched in on the effort, therelease notes.

Browning asked shoppers at ZephyrhillsWalmart to donate school supplies, and alsohelped sort and pack supplies at SunlakeHigh School, which hosted the sorting andpacking process.

“I can’t thank the people of Pascoenough for their generosity in donating somany school supplies to our teachers andstudents, and for volunteering their time topackage those supplies for the teachers,”Browning said, in the release.

“This year, we had 1,400 teachers re-quest supplies,” Duggan Cooley, presidentand CEO of the United Way of PascoCounty, said in the release.

“It’s the highest teacher sign up sincethe annual Stuff the Bus event launched. Weare proud to present every one of themwith supplies to start their school year,”Cooley noted.

Supplies were collected from July 31through Aug. 2 at Publix and Walmart storesat 15 locations throughout the county.

The supplies were sorted from Aug. 3through Aug. 5 at Sunlake High School.

Shoppers contributed an estimated$43,000 worth of supplies, which includedmore than $6,000 in cash donations and

gift cards.Notably, 3M Corporation provided a gen-

erous donation of 864 boxes of bandagesand 1,800 individual post-it note pads to theevent.

The event would not be possible with-out community volunteers.

More than 500 volunteers signed up tocollect supplies, unload buses, sort and pack1,400 teacher boxes over the six-day event.

National surveys indicate that teachersspend more than $400 of their own moneybuying supplies as the school year begins, the release says.

The event was made possible in partfrom community partners Publix, Walmartand Pasco County Schools, as well as spon-sors including Bank of America, 3M,Sunshine Health, Staywell, Hits106FM, and208 Monkeys, as well as other business andcommunity leaders.

“What we have here is nothing short ofan incredible facility, an incredible hospital,an incredible team doing amazing healing, wellness and preventative work — and thecommunity recognizes that,” he said.

“We talk a lot about infrastructure proj-ects in my line of work, especially at thelocal level when I used to be mayor. We talkabout projects like road expansions. We talkabout public works. We talk about publicsafety. We talk about first responders.

“Those all tend to be government proj-ects, government-related tasks.

“But I think what gets missed in that con-versation is probably the most importantinfrastructure project a community canhave, and that is your hospital. Because youbetter believe that families are looking forthat. They’re looking to see how that hospitalranks in that community, the treatment level, the care that they receive,” Burgess said.

The state lawmaker said he speaks frompersonal experience about the quality of carethe hospital provides because his 19-month-old daughter, Adeline, was delivered there. And, when his son Danny Burgess III arrives— expected any day — the family plans to beback at the hospital for his delivery, too.

Dr. Robert Rosequist, chief medical offi-cer, talked about the area’s long need for ahospital.

“Twenty-eight years ago, when I startedto practice out in Land O’ Lakes, there was alot of cow pastures and vacation homes. Alot of pickup trucks. But even back then, when I was first living here, people wouldask me: ‘Doc, when are we going to have ahospital?’

“In 2007, we started a formal planningboard, and we started developing the hopefor this hospital. And then, on a cold windyday in December, about five years ago, wesat here and dug the first shovel of dirt,”Rosequist said.

“We planted a tree, which unfortunatelydidn’t make it,” he saw, drawing a roar oflaughter from the crowd. “But the hospitaldid.”

Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel has fineequipment, including “the best MRI in thewhole state,” Rosequist said.

But what sets the hospital apart, he said,is “the people and the staff — we really docare about our patients.”

A larger hospital is necessary, he added.“We need to expand, because we can’t

continue to provide that care in the existingbricks-and-mortar hospital we built just 2 ½years ago,” Rosequist said.

Denyse Bales-Chubb, the hospital’s presi-dent and CEO, detailed the expansion plans.

The project involves 112,000 square feetof new space and nearly 11,000 square feetof renovated space. It includes 62 inpatientbeds; 18 emergency rooms; five surgical

suites and a Heart Catherization Lab. It alsoadds observation and recovery space, ex-panded support areas and some shelledspace for future growth.

“These additions will allow us to betterserve the patients coming to us for care andbe prepared for the incredible growth thiscommunity is experiencing,” Bales-Chubb said.

The expansion will add three additionalfloors to the hospital’s center wing, and willadd an additional three-story wing that willconnect the south and center wings.

Robins & Morton, the construction com-pany that built the hospital from the groundup, will be handling the expansion.Completion is expected by the end of 2016.

Dempsey, who is leading the “We Care”fundraising campaign, reminded the crowdwhat Wesley Chapel was like when hebroke ground for Saddlebrook 35 years ago.

“When that groundbreaking was over, Itook a good look around and I said, ‘There’snothing here.’ You looked down (State Road)54, there wasn’t a building, there wasn’teven a fruit stand. There was nothing.Absolutely zero,” Dempsey said.

Both Dempsey and Moore praised the vi-sion demonstrated by the Porter family, owners of Wiregrass Ranch, who have soldoff large chunks of their land to help shapethe community of Wesley Chapel.

Don Porter and his wife, Lajuana, nowboth deceased, lived with children, J.D. andQuinn, on property now occupied by thehospital.

Quinn Miller said her family is gratifiedby the hospital’s success.

“We knew when the hospital came onboard, it would be something vital to ourarea,” Miller said. “But, we had no idea thatthey would be almost three years ahead ofschedule for this expansion.

“It’s wonderful to see. The facility is soimpressive,” she said, adding it also is an im-portant source of jobs.

Dempsey said he took on the leadershiprole in the fundraising effort because he be-lieves in the cause.

“In just a short time, approximately threeyears, Florida Hospital has become an inte-gral part of the community.

“I think they know what they’re doing. They have a great record. I wouldn’t hesitateto recommend this hospital to anyone,”Dempsey said.

Like Burgess, Dempsey believes that ahospital is a necessary part of a community.

“The community needs a hospital,”Dempsey said.

“I think, we as people, want the peace ofmind to know that there’s a top-notch hospi-tal just around the corner, and that thathospital will have great medical services, greatdoctors, great nurses, great technology andgreat caregivers. And, we want the place tohave an access to fine equipment, technologyand great care giving. That’s what we want forour families and our friends,” Dempsey said.

Most Holy Redeemer campus last year, which finished out last school year with 239students.

All but two of those students are attend-ing classes on the new campus. The twothat aren’t moved away to Orlando, Combssaid.

The students are coming to the schoolfrom St. Timothy, St. Paul, Our Lady of theRosary, St. Mary and Most Holy Redeemerparishes, he said.

Four classrooms at the school are stillunder construction, Combs said. But whenthey are finished, the school will have a ca-pacity for 600 students.

Construction costs for the school arearound $8 million, said Dr. Michael Tkacik, secretary for ministries for the Diocese of St.Petersburg.

The school will be celebrating a massand a dedication ceremony on Sept. 10 at 2p.m., he said.

Tkacik said enrollment in the Diocese’s

Catholic schools has been holding steadyfor the past couple of years.

As he looks to the future, Tkacik said heis “guardedly optimistic.”

He points to projects such as TampaPremium Outlets and other construction ac-tivity as a sign that the economy — stalledfor several years — is showing new signs oflife.

The school on Saint Timothy’s campus isinspired by Mother Teresa of Calcutta and isrooted in the Catholic faith, according to itswebsite. Its mission is “to develop youngpeople who strive for academic excellence, recognize the dignity of each individual andfoster service to others,” the website says.

Its fundamental reason for existence is tohelp children learn about Jesus and to devel-op their Catholic faith, Combs said. Ofcourse, he added, academics are important.

The Pope John Paul II Youth Center, alsoon St. Timothy’s campus, has alreadyopened.

The facility will be used by the schoolduring the school day and also will be usedfor athletics.

for this park that the community has need-ed for so many years.”

The stage, to be constructed next year, isbeing funded through a $250,000 grantfrom the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs.

It’s taken a long time to get the fundingfor the stage, noted Sandy Graves, who haspushed relentlessly for the project.

It took three governors to finally get thestate’s support, Graves said. Gov. Jeb Bushand Gov. Charlie Crist rejected the request, but Gov. Rick Scott said yes.

Kurt Conover, a longtime supporter ofthe project, said it didn’t hurt to have sup-port from members of the local legislativedelegation.

Conover thinks the stage will add a newdimension to happenings in Land O’ Lakes.

“I envision it to be a very busy place,” hesaid.

Graves sees the stage as a way to fosterthe kind of community life she enjoyedwhen she was young.

“So many of you see it as a new parktoday, but I see good memories,” Graves said, during the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“I remember the brand new park, backin the ’60s. I remember dance events. Andcoming to the community center for theMiss Land O’ Lakes pageant,” she said. “I re-member my brother playing Little Leaguegames here.”

She said she’s grateful for the people ofLand O’ Lakes who saw a need for a com-munity center and park way back then, andfor their support of “a place that added tothe quality of life and to the wonder of theirchildren’s memories.”

The quest for a stage at the park hasbeen nearly 20 years in the making, Gravessaid, during an interview.

She noted that over the years, theHeritage Park Foundation has had all sorts offundraisers and events to draw attention totheir cause.

Foundation members sold turkey legs atthe community’s Flapjack Festivals, sold cof-fee at the opening of the Suncoast Parkway, sold water at a balloon festival at StarkeyPark, and sold doughnuts and coffee at theCentral Pasco Chamber’s community expos.

They also had events, such as Traditionson the Green and Scarecrows ‘N Stuff, todraw attention to the cause.

Pasco County School Board memberJoanne Hurley, a former member of theHeritage Park Foundation, recalled a timewhen the county was thinking about sellingthe parkland and relocating the park.

The community rallied against that.Besides celebrating the park improve-

ments, the ceremony also marked thebeginning of a cooperative arrangement be-tween Pasco County and Pasco CountySchools, to share facilities.

Both parties have agreed to an arrange-ment that will allow students from Sandersto use the county’s practice fields, parkland, picnic shelter and walking trail, and visitorsto the park to use the school’s basketballcourts, parking and covered play area.

“Well, it took a long time,” said RickBuckman, of the county’s parks and recre-ation department, but the efforts of manyhave paid off. “I’m just really excited.”

He thanked a long list of people whohave been involved in making the projecthappen, expressing special gratitude for thepatience of the Land O’ Lakes Police AthleticLeague.

“The LOL Pal Gators — they hung inthere. We kept telling you, you were goingto get a field. Well, you finally got it,”Buckman said.

The cooperative arrangement betweenthe county and the school district is the firstin Pasco County to become operational,Buckman added.

Lonnie Piper, of A-OK Trophies, wasamong those celebrating the updated park.

“This is just gorgeous, what they’vedone,” Piper said. “I can’t wait for the am-phitheater to go in.”

Last year, the ZephyrhillsBulldogs snapped an eight-year play-off drought by making thepostseason for the first time sincehead coach Reggie Roberts tookover in 2010.

This year, the path to an encoredoesn’t begin on the practice field,or in the classroom watching gamefilm.

It begins in church.“I had one of the preachers from

a local church say, ‘Coach, you’vebeen praying for the playoffs andthat’s what you got. Start praying forthe state championship this year,’ “Roberts said while taking a quickbreak during practice last week.

This year, the goal is a state cham-pionship.

But Roberts and the Bulldogswon’t be leaving things up to divineintervention. They’re putting in plen-ty of hard work as they prepare forthe start of the season later thismonth. Music blares from loud-speakers during practice to keep theathletes motivated while they rundrills. Offense, defense and specialteams all take over parts of the fieldto get their practice time in beforescheduled breaks.

The players have noted that there’s anew level of seriousness and focus as theyprepare for the upcoming season.

“I’ve pushed them. Last week they saidit’s been the hardest it’s ever been atZephyrhills High School, and it probably isbecause the expectations are higher,”Roberts said. “We’re looking for betterthings.”

Roberts’ time as coach — he played tightend and linebacker for the school back inhis playing days — has been marked byachieving better things. He took over a pro-gram that had won just six games in theprevious two seasons. It took a year to getthings the way he wanted, but since thenit’s been a string of winning records, culmi-nating in an 8-3 mark and a trip to the

postseason. The Bulldogs lost a close game to

Suwannee High School, and it left themwanting a bigger taste of the postseason.

They’re aiming for a trip to the CitrusBowl in Orlando, where the state champi-onships will be played in December.

Before they can get that far, though, theyhave to earn it on the field during the regu-lar season.

And before that happens, Roberts wantsthem to earn it in their studies and in thecommunity.

“The first thing my athletes have to un-derstand is that football is an extension ofthe classroom. We are student-athletes first,”he said.

Roberts speaks with the decisive tone ofa coach who knows what he wants from

his players, and he’s already getting theirsupport. They recently worked at a PurpleHeart Memorial Dedication earlier thismonth, and he wants them to bring a blue-collar attitude to everything they do. Byfocusing on working together and gettingthings done in class, the coach is convincedit will make them better players on Fridaynights.

Roberts will need players to step up andfill some big gaps left by graduating seniors. The coach misses all of them, since they allcontributed to the team’s success. But stand-out players like quarterback Ty Tanner andrunning back Jaylen Pickett were more thanrole players, and they’ve moved on. Thatmeans the team has to find a way to moveon as well.

The coach is confident the team cantake the next step with existing talent likeMyles Carter, Antwione Sims and JackieTucker. And Tucker, a senior receiver, shareshis optimism.

“This offseason I’ve been grinding withmy two younger quarterbacks, CharlesHarrison and Dylan Wood, trying to getthem to where my previous quarterback, TyTanner, was,” Tucker said.

The 6-foot-2, 188-pound wideout is in histhird year with the Bulldogs, and he knowsthat means taking on a leadership role. He’sembracing the responsibility of being avoice for the team and making sure every-one is doing their job in practice, workingout and getting prepared for the upcomingseason.

And for Tucker, that includes himself.“I hit the weight room 10 times harder

than I used to,” he said. The players work hard in the weight

room and at practice, where Roberts’ assis-tants fine-tune their mechanics, and the

team races through a battery of drills andexercises.

And, the head coach isn’t making anytime for offseason distractions.

They’re in a new district this year.Roberts isn’t concerned that the

Bulldogs aren’t expected to do much withcompetition like River Ridge and Gulf wait-ing for them in 5A-8 (“If you look at thepolls, we’re way down,” he said. “I love it.”).

The coach brushed off a question aboutplaying longtime rival Pasco High School inNovember (“Hasn’t even crossed mymind.”).

Roberts also didn’t want to single outany one facet of his team that he expectedto stand out this coming season.

But when pressed to choose one — of-fense, defense, or special teams — the coachgave a smile before responding with a tonethat suggested the answer was final.

“Offense. Defense. And special teams,” hesaid before heading off to focus on his play-ers.

Despite exhaustive research, it appearsthere are no records to prove that Coolidgeever set foot in Dade City.

Julie Bartlett Nelson is the archivist for acollection of Coolidge documents and mem-orabilia, kept at Forbes Library inNorthampton, Massachusetts. She was un-able to find any travel logs or newspaperclippings about Dade City or the Gray MossInn in her archives.

Eve Bacon, who is now deceased, was aCentral Florida historian who owned andedited her own newspaper during the1950s in Orange County.

She published extensive documentationof Coolidge’s visit, tracking him from theGodfrey home in Orlando, to his departurefrom Bok’s home for a return trip to the na-tion’s capital.

That account is included in Bacon’s two-volume book, “Orlando, A CentennialHistory.” She describes everything from fron-tier gun battles to Cracker underworld kingsto gators and buffaloes on Orange Avenue. But, there’s no mention of Coolidge visitingDade City.

There are references to Coolidge’s visit ina book compiled for the Pasco CountyHistorical Preservation Committee in 1992,and also a reference by Madonna Wise thatwas published in 2014.

Yet local newspaper accounts — in theTampa Morning Tribune and the Dade CityBanner — that were published during theperiod of Coolidge’s trip to Bok Tower donot mention the President making a detourto Dade City.

There also were unconfirmed “tips” thatproved interesting.

One was that the old guest registry ofthe Gray Moss Inn, purportedly signed byCoolidge, wound up in the hands of Dr. R. D.Sistrunk, who lived next door.

Another was that Coolidge had befriend-ed the Dudley family and secretly made atrip to visit with them as the owners of theGray Moss Inn.

But those could not be verified.Interestingly enough, though, there was

another link between Dade City andEdward Bok.

LeHeup Hill, south of Dade City, was anearly site considered by Bok along Fort KingRoad. At 240 feet above sea level, the hill

named for the family that moved there in1911, was among the leading candidates.

But negotiations with Bok broke down.Fred T. Himmelwright proceeded with

plans for an observation tower at LeHeupHill. He spent nearly $8,000 in 1926 to erecthis structure, which he opened as a publicattraction.

Tourists enjoyed “a comfortable room, allglassed in, for cool or stormy weather,” theDade City Banner reported. The room was“fitted up with chairs so that visitors mayenjoy rest and the glorious scenery at thesame time,” according to the newspaper.

And, tourists could purchase orange juiceat “5 cents a glass,” the newspaper says.

While the rumor of a Coolidge visit per-sists, Gordon and Phyllis Gill, who havebeen managers of the Gray Moss Inn sincethe 1990s, have found no record of “SilentCal” visiting there.

Before he died in 1933, Coolidge did re-turn to Florida to spend a month at theLakeside Inn in Mount Dora.

As it turns out, George W. Bush is theonly confirmed President who visited PascoCounty during his presidency.

Bush was running for re-election andmade a campaign stop in New Port Richeyin October 2004. “W” shared the stage atSims Park with his younger brother, thenFlorida Gov. Jeb Bush.

Facts disputethis local legendBy Doug SandersSpecial to The Laker

Not a single historic marker — amongmore than 50 posted across Pasco County— refers to it, but there’s a longstanding leg-end that President Calvin Coolidge hadlunch at the Gray Moss Inn in Dade City, during his visit to Florida to dedicate BokTower Gardens in Polk County.

Numerous sources document DadeCity’s 126-year history.

Those accounts detail the world’s largestcitrus processing plant (formerly LykesPasco Packing); Bill Larkin’s patented cattleunderpass; and namesake Major FrancisLanghorne Dade, who died on Dec. 28,1835, when he and 100 of his men wereambushed, resulting in the first battle of theSecond Seminole War.

But there is no record to substantiateCoolidge’s reputed visit to Dade City.

Here are facts that can be documentedabout Coolidge’s visit to Central Florida.

On Feb. 1, 1929, some 60 miles from

Dade City, Coolidge dedicated Bok TowerGardens in Lake Wales, Florida.

According to published reports, he hadspent the previous evening at a private din-ner party hosted by the Godfrey family, close relatives to First Lady Grace AnnaCoolidge. The President departed on themorning of the dedication from 335 Poncede Leon Place in Orlando.

Known in the press as “Silent Cal,” aCommander-in-Chief of fewwords, the President told re-porters: “(Bok) is dedicating itas a bird sanctuary and put-ting up these bells to interestthe birds in music.”

Large crowds stopped thePresidential Train in Sanfordto present gifts of citrus, andin Winter Park to present flo-ral arrangements, accordingto published accounts.

Approximately 75,000people came out to hearCoolidge dedicate Bok TowerGardens, a gift to theAmerican people fromEdward Bok, the editor of theLadies’ Home Journal and awinner of the Pulitzer Prizefor his autobiography.

The evening of the dedica-tion, Florida Gov. Doyle E.Carlton attended a dinner inhonor of the President andFirst Lady at Bok’s home.

Hours later, Coolidge andhis wife headed backovernight to Washington onan Atlantic Coast Railway spe-cial.

NEW WAWAThe Pennsylvania-based fuel and

fresh food chain is poised to build aWawa store at the intersection of StateRoad 56 and Trout Creek Road, west ofBruce B. Downs Boulevard. The newWawa will be near Tijuana Flats and TheShoppes at New Tampa. Company rep-resentatives met with Pasco Countyplanners on July 31 for initial discus-sions on the project, according tocounty records.

A conceptual plan filed with thecounty shows a store of about 6,100square feet and 16 fueling stations.

According to Wawa’s website, thebusiness began in 1803 as an ironfoundry in New Jersey. In the early1900s, owner George Wood moved intodairy farming. His grandson, GrahameWood, opened a store in 1964, sellingdairy products. Today Wawa has about645 locations in Pennsylvania, NewJersey, Delaware Virginia and Florida, with about half selling fuel.

The goose adopted for the Wawalogo is based on the Native Americanword for the Canada goose. The dairyfarm also was in a rural area ofPennsylvania known as Wawa.
