As the speaker wrapped up his talk, LandO’ Lakes High School students streameddown to the front of the auditorium to shakehis hand and pose with him for photos.
They wanted a personal encounter withPhilip Gans, a man who survived the hor-
rors of the Holocaust during World War II.Gans was at the high school to share hisstory, so others won’t forget the atrocitiescommitted by the Nazis.
“Your children will never have a chanceto see a concentration camp survivor,” Ganssaid, speaking to teachers and students fromU.S. history, world history and several otherclasses.
Social studies teacher Whitney Millerarranged the visit, saying it’s important forstudents to use the most primary source ofinformation they can receive.
Gans, now 86, said his life in Amsterdambegan as a happy one.

Big Storm offers big brew as beeroperations fermentBy Michael [email protected]
It all started simple enough. Mike Bishop and Clay Yarn wanted to es-
cape their stuffy office jobs, so they leasedsome industrial space in Odessa with thehopes of brewing a little bit of beer, andsharing it with anyone who happened todiscover their operation.
Instead, a 200-barrel operation explodedinto a 5,000-barrel one in the span of twoshort years. And it might not be long beforeBig Storm Brewing Co. hits the 100,000-bar-rel mark.
“I never thought when we started thatwe would ever need anything more thanthis little shop,” said Bishop, who lives inLand O’ Lakes. “We just thought we wouldmake boutique beers, and make enough topay the bills and give us a little money onthe side. But that was not our destiny. Peoplejust wanted our beers.”
In a short time, Big Storm grew from twoemployees to 16. Once they find biggerquarters somewhere in central PascoCounty — they are looking for up to 50,000 MICHAEL HINMAN/STAFF PHOTOS

Before reading mycolumn this week, you may want to firstread the other storyon this page that ex-plains that we’vechanged the endingon our email to makeall of our digital ad-dresses uniform.
Our goal is to make it easier to find uson the Web, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube,LinkedIn and other virtual forums that willbecome the next multimedia rage. Simplyput, all of our addresses will now incorpo-rate the phrase “lakerlutznews.”
I think of “lakerlutznews” as the “han-dle” for our company. Remember thosedays not so long go ago when peopleadopted the CB radio language of truckersand gave themselves “handles”?
CB radios were the precursor of cellphones and email, and provided an instantway to talk with friends and family whiledriving across town or cross-country. Inmany ways today’s technologies are notthat much different — just faster and moreseamless.
Our new handle is easier to rememberand say than “cnewspubs” — the abbrevia-tion of our corporate name, CommunityNews Publications, that we’ve used sincewe launched our first website in 2002.
While we want you to know about ournew “handle” and expanded digital prod-ucts, this does not mean we will befocusing less on the printed weekly news-paper you are holding in your hands.
In fact, now that our website andFacebook page have been redesigned andwe’re posting e-editions and daily photosand stories, we have more time than everto focus on the newspaper itself. After all, there are 60,000 people who read TheLaker and Lutz News every week, or240,000 readers monthly. This comparesto 18,000 monthly page views on ourwebsite and close to 2,000 likes onFacebook.
With numbers like this, there’s nodoubt that the printed newspaper is theway most of you prefer to get your localnews. And you’re no different than news-
paper readers nationwide.A recent study by the Newspaper
Association of America found that 55 per-cent of the U.S. newspaper audience —both daily and weekly papers like ours —only read their local newspaper in printand never read it online.
The NAA hired Scarborough Researchto survey 150 U.S. media markets, includ-ing Tampa Bay. The study found that thedigital-only newspaper audience (peoplewho only read newspapers online, via mo-bile devices, or both) is very small.
Just 7 percent said they only read theirlocal newspaper online, 3 percent saidthey only read it with a mobile device, andjust 5 percent said they read it both onlineand with a mobile device.
That works out to 15 percent of thelocal newspaper audience who don’tread the printed paper and instead onlyread the news online or with a mobile de-vice.
So, to those who believe the printednewspaper is on its way to extinction, youare wrong. This NAA study is just the latestof many studies that dispels the belief thatnewspapers are dinosaurs and will not bearound for our great-grandchildren toread.
While only 15 percent of newspaperreaders get their news digitally today, itstill represents a lot of readers, and thatmarket will likely continue to grow. So,we will continue to make improvementsto our online services and do our best tokeep up with the ever-changing digitalworld.
But at the same time, we will never for-get that the vast majority of our readerswill always prefer the printed paper tostay abreast of local stories, photos and ad-vertisements that are informative, relevantand uplifting to read.
The challenge that I have as publisheris to bridge the worlds of print and digitalso that we remain accessible to all of ourreaders in the format they prefer, to enableus to continue to be a vital resource foreveryone who is interested in their com-munity.
And hopefully something as simple asconsistently using our new “handle” of “lak-erlutznews” will make it easier for you todo just that.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
There have been some exciting changesin recent weeks to how you can read TheLaker/Lutz News, and how you can commu-nicate with us as well.
The first change is in how you can reachthe staff by email. For years, [email protected] was the way to get to us.However, that is no longer the case, as we askthat you replace it with @lakerlutznews.com.
Typically, our email addresses are the firstinitial of our first name and then our full lastname, followed by @lakerlutznews.com. Theonly exception to this is our community ed-itor, B.C. Manion, who uses the [email protected].
So why the change?Well, first, @lakerlutznews.com is easier
to remember and say than our old address.Giving our old email address over thephone, for example, could be clunky andcomplicated, especially since some letterssound like others.
Second, it communicates clearly thatemails you receive from us are coming fromyour community newspaper. That includesThe Laker, which has published since 1981,and the Lutz News, which has publishedsince 1964.
Finally, it better reflects where you canfind us online at LakerLutzNews.com. It’salso a lot closer to our Facebook address aswell, which is nowFacebook.com/LakerLutzNews.
Another new feature available on ourwebsite is our e-edition. Sure, you can waituntil Thursday afternoon each week to readour stories from the print edition on ourwebsite. But if you don’t have access to ourprint publication, and would like to see thepaper when it’s delivered, then all you haveto do is stop by our website everyWednesday.
At the top of our page is a link called “E-Editions.” Hovering over that with a mousewill bring up a submenu featuring the differ-ent editions of The Laker and Lutz News, based on where you live.
This lets you read our newspapers notonly on your computer, but on mobile de-vices as well. Just visit our website on yoursmartphone or tablet, click on “E-Editions,”and you’re on your way.
“We appreciate you continuing to makeThe Laker/Lutz News your communitynewspaper, and hope you will take advan-tage of our new digital offerings while stillenjoying our printed edition here in yourhands,” news editor Michael Hinman said.

Baldomero Lopez nursing homewins Florida TaxWatch awardThe Laker/Lutz News Staff Report
Florida TaxWatch and Lt. Gov. CarlosLopez-Cantera recently honored BaldomeroLopez State Veterans Nursing Home for itswork in saving tax money over the pastyear.
The Prudential Productivity Awards weregiven to 432 individuals and state employeeteams for creating and implementing inno-vative solutions and productivityimprovements, which last year created $558million in cost savings, cost avoidances andincreased revenue for state government.
“Florida is proud to use the PrudentialProductivity Awards to recognize our em-ployees with ingenuity who make thepublic sector more efficient for allFloridians,” Lopez-Cantera said, in a release.“Our state employees continue to provideinnovative solutions that save Florida fami-lies’ hard-earned money, and make theSunshine State a great place to live, work, and build their dreams.”
The nursing home, located at 6919Parkway Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes — just offEhren Cutoff — received a certificate for itsefforts. It honored the team there of MarliesSarrett, Sue Guthrie, Lyn Bodemann, BarbaraBoudreau, Jackie Gorgen, Lucy Scibek andJoanne Burley.
The Prudential Productivity Awards pro-gram recognizes and rewards hard-workingstate employees who create and implementinnovative cost-saving and efficiency im-
provements, Florida TaxWatch said. The pro-gram has honored the state’s public servantssince 1988.
“The Prudential Productivity Awards is anationally unique program that brings theprivate sector together to honor the mostproductive and innovative employees inFlorida state government,” said DominicCalabro, Florida TaxWatch’s president andchief executive, in a release. “Each of theaward winners are commended for theircommitment to reducing costs for Florida’shard-working taxpayers while dramaticallyimproving the services that each Floridiandepends on.”
The program also strives to encouragestate agencies to work together to replicatethe savings across state government. Since1989, thousands of individuals, teams, workunits and partnerships have produced $8.7 billion worth of added value as a directresult of award winners’ achievements, andthe replication of those achievements.
Over the program’s 26-year history,Florida TaxWatch has discovered more inter-agency cooperation and increasedteamwork amongst award winners to bringsavings to Floridians, the group said.
Recipients of the 195 cash and plaqueawards will be honored during fivestatewide ceremonies beginning June 4 atFlorida State University in Tallahassee, andthen later in Jacksonville, Orlando andMiami, before wrapping up in Tampa onJune 13.

From the outside, the squat ware-house building housing theSuncoast Center for Fine Scale
Modeling is no showstopper.Step inside, though, and it’s an entirely
different story. The center is a showcase of the kind of
artistry that can be achieved in the world ofmodel making. It has several exhibits, butthe centerpiece of the collection is calledthe Sundance Central, a fine scale modularrailroad.
The display was created by a group ofmodel-makers who are obsessive in their at-tention to detail. They’ve spent thousands ofhours over several years working to create arailroad environment that looks and soundslike it’s from a period between the 1890sand 1920s.
Smoke billows from a locomotive as itchugs along a hand-laid track. The sounds oftrains, speeding up and slowing down withthe calls of birds in the background, providean added air of authenticity.
Tiny people populate the display. Somewait at a train station. Others work at a gas
station. Some labor in the rail yards. There’s amultitude of scenes along the route, includ-ing a lumberyard, a salvage shop and a trainmaintenance facility.
Trains make their way through a terrainthat’s been painstakingly landscaped withhandmade grass and trees. The locomotivesrun across elevated tracks, with a sculptedwaterfall and images of majestic mountainsarranged to serve as a backdrop.
Besides the Sundance Central, the centerhas Civil War military models, a tribute tothe Band of Brothers, a fighter pilot in a F-15Eagle cockpit and other displays. For trainlovers, there are two other model railroaddisplays that were created and donated bygroups from Australia. And, there’s theSilverton Central, a layout created by JonAddison, a modeler in the center’s group.
“There’s so many things in here for youto see,” said Dale MacKeown, another mem-ber on the Sundance team. “People whocome in here typically spend two, two-and-a-half hours. We have people who come inhere every time.”
One guy, around 95, came with six mem-bers of his family, and they spent the wholeday there, MacKeown said.
Because of its modular nature, theSundance Central can be taken apart andtransported to train shows and conferenceselsewhere. It is so large, disassembling it is agargantuan task, and it requires a semitrailerto move it.
The display is not widely known to thegeneral public, but is popular among trainenthusiasts and modelers, MacKeown said.
“It’s been to all four corners of theUnited States in the last 10 years,” he said.“People from all over the world hear aboutus.”
In September, it will be the centerpieceof the National Narrow Gauge Conventionin Kansas City, Mo.
The Sundance Central got its start about15 years ago when some group membersbecame acquainted with each otherthrough the Florida Garden Railway Society,MacKeown said. They decided it would beneat to build a modular train layout theycould carry in the trunks of their cars to
train shows. They moved into the center’s current
home, at 2645 Success Drive in Odessa, three years ago.
The modelers are sticklers for detail. They use foam rubber to create fake rockface. They use rope fiber to make artificialgrass. They use wax to make imitation cowpies.
Some people wonder why the men areso involved in creating the models, said JimHopes, another member of the Sundanceteam.
“It’s because we love doing it. Once youstart to create something that looks prettygood, you can’t stop,” he said.
“Everybody loves trains at some point intheir life. Some people, like us, never getover it,” said Hopes, who built his first modeltrain when he was 10 or 11.
“My father got me my first Lionel (train)when I was 5,” MacKeown said.
That was nearly 70 years ago.In his Silverton Central railroad layout,
Addison has created a setting that includes aharbor, a produce market, a village and otherfeatures.
Some train enthusiasts simply want tooperate them and are not too particularabout the setting behind them, Addison said.
“We care about making things look real.We kind of look at it as an art,” Addison said.

HOUSING RECOVERY PROVENBY CONNERTON SUCCESS
Connerton is trumpeting evidence of ahousing recovery in Florida after selling 70new homes in the past year, and projectingto do 120 more in 2014.
The reason for its success has comefrom moves its developer, Hayman Woods, did during the housing crisis, according toa release. And it started with protecting theinvestments of the 300 families already liv-ing there, while at the same time preparingfor new buyers.
Among the things the Dallas-based de-veloper did was:
• Pay subsidies to the homeowners as-sociation, which allowed club amenities tocontinue to operate at a high levelthroughout the downturn.
• Made what it called a substantial in-vestment in the community developmentdistrict to make sure landscaping, securityand infrastructure were maintained.
• Provided incentives to bring qualityhomebuilders into the community andrestart construction in early 2013. Thosecompanies include Ryland Homes, M/IHomes, Taylor Morrison, and Homes by
WestBay. There are six furnished modelsavailable from these builders.
Houses at Connerton are priced be-tween $192,000 and $525,000. Thecommunity is located at U.S. 41 in Land O’Lakes, and features two miles of naturetrails, a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse andmiles of winding roads and walkways.

own business. We had people working forus. We had domestic help. We even had acar.”
But Gans and his family were Jewish, sowhen the Nazis invaded they went into hid-ing beginning in August 1942, moving fromplace to place for nearly a year to avoid de-tection. On July 24, 1943 — the evening ofhis father’s birthday — they were arrested.Gans was 15 at the time.
The family was taken to a detentioncamp, where they remained a month be-fore being sent to Auschwitz III, a slavelabor camp. They loaded more than1,000 people into cattle cars and cartedthem to the concentration camp, jam-ming 50 to 60 people in each car, Gansrecalled.
There were no bathrooms. Those whoneeded to relieve themselves were forced todo so in a pail, in full view of others, Ganssaid.
“They had no respect for humanity. As amatter of fact, they were savages. They werebrutal,” he said.
When they arrived at the camp, they sep-arated the men and older boys from thewomen and children.
He never saw his mom, sister or grand-mother again.
Once Gans he arrived at the camp, hewas known as No. 139755. It’s tattooed onhis arm and on a replica of the shirt hewore at the concentration camp.
“The conditions were unbelievable,”Gans said.
During his time of confinement he neversaw a toothbrush or toothpaste. He show-ered about once every 10 days, he said.
Besides the physical hardships, prisonersendured mental abuse, he said.
“They did everything to make life miser-able for you,” Gans said. “They were brutal.”
Workers kept trying to work, even whenthey were deathly ill, he said. They knew theconsequences if they didn’t.
“Everybody knows if you’re too weak towork, you’d wind up in the gas chamber,”Gans said.
Despite the hardships, Gans considershimself one of the lucky ones.
“I survived,” he said. “There were manypeople who did not survive. My dad, for in-stance, he was the only (one) of the 21members of his family that did not die inthe gas chambers. He died in a deathmarch April 1945, a month before the liber-ation.”
Gans said he, too, walked in the deathmarch — long brutal hikes used by theNazis when moving prisoners from oneconcentration camp to another — beforebeing liberated by the American Army onApril 23, 1945. He was 17.
Besides using his message to remind peo-ple of the atrocities of the Holocaust, Gansalso spreads another message. “Erase hate,”he urged the audience.
“When you go home tonight, take outyour dictionary and cross out the word‘hate.’ Hate is corrosive,” Gans said.
He also encouraged students to nevergive up hope and to take action when theywitness something wrong going on.
“Don’t hate and don’t be a bystander, es-pecially in this day and age when so manykids are being bullied and then the next dayin the newspaper (you read) that kid com-mitted suicide,” Gans said.
Those who stand by idly and let the bul-lying happen, he said, “are partly to blame.”
“If you see something that’s being donewrong, even if you have no interest, speakup,” Gans said.

Big Storm doesn’t necessarily competewith big names in beer like Budweiser orCoors, but instead with other craft beers— many brewed in Florida — looking to geta foothold on the market.
“None of them want to admit that we’recompeting against each other, and they talk
about our craft beer community and howtight it is,” Bishop said. “Nobody wants totalk about the dirty word of competition, but we put people on the street and we be-lieve in relationships. Otherwise, we keepour heads down and focus on our product, and let the consumer decide.”
Bishop also listens to what customershave to say, especially those who come rightinto the brewery. Big Storm has a taproomopen every evening where anyone who canfind it off State Road 54 can stop in anddrink a mug or two, or maybe three.
Many of those customers come inthrough a bay door, and sit literally feet awayfrom large brewing tanks that make the veryproduct they’re sipping.
“We are an approachable, friendly brew-
ery, and we’re happy that locals come uphere and have a pretty good time,” Bishopsaid. “It’s a cool hangout in the middle of anindustrial park right inside a garage.”
Unlike many bars, the taproom is de-signed to be social. There are no televisions, and the music is just low enough to keepconversations flowing.
Beyond needing larger space and moreemployees, Bishop has a lot to focus on, in-cluding plans to start putting Big Storm incans to sell in stores.
It’s not exactly what he had envisionedjust two years ago when the doors to BigStorm Brewing Co. first opened, but that’sperfectly fine with Bishop.
“I don’t have much time anymore to beexcited, but I am very fortunate,” he said.
“I’ve made a profession that I have a passionfor and that I enjoy. And I’ proud that I haveemployees that feel the exact same way.”
The taproom is open at 4 p.m. on week-days, 2 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 p.m. onSundays. The brewery is located at 2438Merchant Ave., in Odessa.

Sarah Reed opens the taproom at Big StormBrewing Co., what co-founder Mike Bishopcalls one of Pasco County’s best secrets. Here, anyone can stop by and try the differentbrews offered by Big Storm literally feet awayfrom the machinery and team that produces it.
Brewer’s assistant Tyler Schafer tests one of the newest batches of beer produced by BigStorm Brewing Co. Head Brewer Mike Bishop says his team’s attention to quality is what’shelped his Odessa-based beer company explode on the market.
Big Storm Brewing Co. is the first micro-brewery of its kind in Pasco County, and inless than two years, has grown from hun-dreds of barrels a year to 5,000, now open-ing up a new market in South Florida.

WELLS CHALLENGES WILSONFOR COMMISSION SEAT
Mike Wells Jr. has aname that is quite fa-miliar to Pasco Countyresidents, thanks tohis father, longtimeproperty appraiserMike Wells Sr.
And now theyounger Wells wantsto make a name of hisown by challengingPasco County Commissioner Henry Wilson inthe Republican primary. In making the an-nouncement, Wells doesn’t share a lot abouthis platform, except that he knows being acommissioner “demands hard work as well asleadership skills attuned to citizens’ needs.”
“With the blessing of my family andfriends, I am committing myself to do allthat is necessary to run a positive and in-formative campaign,” Wells said, in a release.“For most of my life, I have seen govern-ment at work. I am now ready to participatein the democratic process by doing what ittakes to earn the job of representing the cit-izens of District 4.”
Wells will have to start by raising money, and lots of it. Wilson, who was first electedin 2010, already has a running start withmore than $17,000 raised and at least$16,000 in the bank, according to electionrecords, through the end of February.Wilson’s biggest month was in Januarywhen he hauled in $8,735, at least half of itcoming from builders and developers.
Wells’ father served on the county com-mission himself in the 1980s, and waselected the county’s property appraiser in1996. The younger Wells said he’s been ac-tive in political campaigns since he was 12,and has worked in both sales and manage-ment for Enterprise Rent-A-Car for 17 years.
Primary elections are set for Aug. 26.
HEALTH CARE GROUP SUPPORTS ROSS
Healthcare Leadership Council hasnamed U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, a“Champion of Health Care Innovation.”
The advocacy group is a collection ofchief executives from various companies inthe health care field. It said Ross was dedi-cated to new developments in health caretechnologies, treatments and practices.
“Innovation is a necessity, not an option,in addressing the challenges facing ourhealth care system,” said HLC presidentMary Grealy, in a release. “We applaud Rep.Ross’ leadership, dedication and vision in ad-vancing the quality and cost-effectiveness ofAmerican health care.”
Ross is set to face Democrat Alan Cohnin the November general election.
POLL WORKERS NEEDED FORAUGUST, NOVEMBER ELECTIONS

mary election Aug. 26 and the generalelection Nov. 4. Positions are paid, but po-tential candidates will need to be able tostand, bend, stoop, lift approximately 30pounds, and have normal vision and manualand physical dexterity.
Applicants also need to write and readEnglish, have an email address, and be ableto work the entire day from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
All positions receive mandatory paidtraining the month preceding both the pri-mary and general elections.

ROSS WANTS TO CURB FEDERAL UNIONS
U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Lakeland, is onceagain going after federal employees whospend work time conducting union busi-ness, asking the Personnel Managementdirector in Washington for a report on suchpractices.
“Since taxpayers pay the salary of all feder-al employee, they have a right to know howmuch of their money is used for conductingunion business while on the clock,” Ross saidin a release. “We are more than $17 trillion indebt. I believe in fair representation. However,we must ensure that we are spending thepeople’s hard-earned money wisely.”
Federal employees spent roughly 3.4 mil-lion hours doing union work in 2012,according to Ross. Those lost hours cost$155 million.
Groups like the National Federation ofFederal Employees disagree, however. Theysay that federal unions exist solely to “ad-dress crucial workplace issues and defendemployees from adverse actions.”
If such meetings were moved to nightsor weekends, it would still require managersand such, who would then have to be paidfor additional time.
Ross is so far facing Democrat AlanCohn.
BURGESS, DIAZ TO SPEAK AT REPUBLICAN CLUB
Republican Florida House candidatesDanny Burgess and Minnie Diaz are set tospeak at the Wesley Chapel Republican ClubApril 10 beginning at 6:30 p.m., at WesleyChapel Hyundai, 27000 Wesley Chapel Blvd.

U.S. CHAMBER ENDORSES ROSSThe U.S. Chamber of Commerce official-
ly endorsed U.S. Rep. Dennis Ross,R-Lakeland, and thanked him for his supportof free enterprise and job creation.
“Too many of our neighbors are still un-employed and left suffering by our stagnanteconomy,” Ross said in a release. “I’m com-mitted to continuing the fight to get thefederal government out of the way of busi-ness owners so they can create jobs and wecan unleash the power of the Americaneconomy.”
Ross is set to face Democratic challengerAlan Cohn in November.

LOL junior heads to state as district champBy Michael [email protected]
When Land O’ Lakes High School juniorKavya Avancha lost an individual tennismatch against Wiregrass Ranch, she was dis-appointed.
She dropped the best-of-three match inthree sets, and admits she didn’t play herbest tennis. It was her first — and ended upher only — loss in individual competition allseason. And she was hoping for a rematch.
Avancha got that rematch, but the stakeswere much higher: The district finals, with aspot in the state tournament on the line.Avancha had a chance to not only avengeher only loss this season, but also make upfor a district finals loss the previous season.
This time the outcome went in her favor:A straight-set victory to make up for the pre-vious loss, her first trip to state competitionas an individual player, and Land O’ Lakes’first ever state finals berth for an individualplayer in girls tennis.
“It feels great. I’ve been working reallyhard. I really wanted to make it to state thisyear, so I’m really happy about that,” Avanchasaid.
She qualified for state last year in doublescompetition, and to reach that level this yearon her own — while dispatching the onlyplayer to beat her this year — was particu-larly satisfying.
Avancha wasn’t the only one invested inthe outcome. For Coach Karen Turman, whohas taught tennis for 17 years and is a U.S.
Professional Tennis Association-certified pro,it was a matchup that got her own competi-tive juices flowing.
“I wanted to play that match as much asKavya,” Turman said. “I got up out of my chairand had to take a walk. I went up to the um-pire and I said to him, ‘It’s hard to watchbecause I’d rather be on the court.’ You wantto be out there in the competition yourself.”
Turman’s talents with a racket weren’tneeded, and she was proud of Avancha andexcited to see the school send an individualplayer to state for the first time.
Getting to this level of success takes a lotof work, Avancha said. She practices a cou-ple hours after school on most evenings, and that’s often after the school’s own ten-nis practice. She even works with her father,Srinivas, who coaches her.
Spending that much time on her game al-lows Avancha to not think about form ortechnique during an actual match. Her bodyalready knows where to position itself andhow to hit the ball, so her mind can focuson strategy during the competition, findingher opponent’s weak points and exploitingthem with her own strengths.
And her 11-1 record during the regularseason shows that her method works on thecourt.
But according to Turman, Avancha’s realstrength lies in how she approaches thegame and conducts herself during matches.
“Nothing frustrates her. You cannot tell ifshe’s winning or losing by just her de-meanor on the court, and that’s what a true
champion does,” Turman said. “They don’t re-ally show their emotion. They just have theguts to pull it out.”
Avancha’s focus is apparent off the courtas well. As a member of Land O’ Lakes High’sInternational Baccalaureate program, shespends a lot of time on her rigorous courseload and hours of homework almost everynight. But the same determination thatserves her well with a tennis racket givesher confidence in the classroom.
And Avancha admits that confidence isn’tsomething she always had. But competingand succeeding in tennis has helped herovercome those issues.
“Before tennis, as a kid, I was actuallyvery nervous and not very confident,” shesaid. “But I’ve grown in my confidence. I cansay what’s on my mind and that’s grownwith the sport.”
Avancha knows the players will be betterand tougher to defeat in state competition, which will take place later this month. Butshe said that facing a higher caliber of playermakes the game fun for her, and she’s look-ing forward to seeing how she fares againstthe best in the state.
Before that happens, however, she’ll goback to the regimen of hard work and prac-tice that has helped get to this point.
“I’m probably going to put in a little bitmore hours these next two weeks than Iusually do so I get more practice,” Avanchasaid. “But I’ll probably do the same drills andwork on some other things I need to im-prove.”

The Sunlake softball team doesn’t have awinning record. After their home finaleagainst the Zephyrhills Bulldogs, the teamwon’t be thinking about a state champi-onship.
The game also won’t affect the Class 5A-District 8 standings, where the Seahawks arenear the bottom.
Still, the game on April 10 might be themost important one of the season.
Sunlake’s game will not only feature twosoftball teams looking for a win, it will serveas a benefit for the Wounded WarriorProject, a nonprofit organization that pro-vides assistance and services to injuredmilitary service members. Attendees cansupport the organization by making a directdonation at the game, or by purchasing arts, crafts or T-shirts that will be on sale from avariety of booths.
A portion of those proceeds will go tothe organization.
Coach Nelson Garcia, who organized theevent with his wife Denise, isn’t surprisedthat a team starting four freshman would en-dure some growing pains in the win-losscolumn. But he believes that supportingcharitable organizations as a team — theSeahawks also had a Pink Out event earlierin the year to support breast cancer aware-ness — helps them grow in important waysthat go beyond the playing field.
“They’re learning not only goals of soft-ball, but in life and giving back to thecommunity also,” Garcia said. “They’re veryexcited to do it. They can’t wait.”
Garcia spent 14 years with the fire de-partment, so he understands the importanceof serving the community. But while theteam is eager to show support for the mili-tary and will wear special green camouflageshirts during the game (Zephyrhills also isparticipating, and will don orange camou-flage shirts), the issue is particularlyimportant for their coach and his family.
Garcia’s son, Sgt. Anthony Michael Garcia, was wounded in 2011 during his first tour
in Afghanistan. He was approximately 15feet away from an improvised explosive de-vice, more commonly known as an IED,when it exploded.
Garcia’s son recovered and is now serv-ing in his second tour of the region. But herealizes that many members of the militaryhave worse outcomes and often need sup-port, and the organization helps witheverything from prosthetics to post-traumat-ic stress disorders.
“It seems like people forget that they goover there and they’re serving right nowand they’re getting wounded,” Garcia said.“How many don’t come back, or don’t
come back all intact? The great thing aboutthe Wounded Warrior Project is they help allthe military personnel in all the branches toget their lives back together when theycome back.”
The event is open to the public and be-gins at 6 p.m., with the game starting at 7.There also will be giveaways, a hospitalitytent for active and retired military, and a U.S.Army recruiting booth.
Sunlake High School is located at 3023Sunlake Blvd., in Land O’ Lakes.
For information about the WoundedWarrior Project, visit online atWoundedWarriorProject.org.
COURTESY OF NELSON GARCIAThe Sunlake Seahawks are closing out their home softball schedule with green camouflage shirts to commemorate their benefit for theWounded Warrior Project on April 10. Their opponents, the Zephyrhills Bulldogs, also are participating with special shirts for the game.
