Dear Ones:

Greetings from Hawaii! As Solomon says, "THe winter is past; therains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the seasonof singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in ourMay this be a time of spiritual awakening, too. If winter is notover where you live, it will be soon.

Since I was gone for 3 weeks over the end of the year, Zola hadto cook some Wednesdays, and we had flooded roads a few times, did not have our Bible Club at Waialua for several yeeks. Welost our momentum and our attendance has been low since then, persevered. They come from the neighborhood and areunchurched. Several men went with our preacher to Promise-Keepers. They areenthusiastic and intend to show by their li^^^^heir renewedcommitment and are holding each other accountable. A group ofthem bike together on Sunday afternoons.

The family of a serviceman has been attending in recent monthsa mother and four children. The two teenagers made theirconfession faith recently and will be baptized when their fatherreturns soon from active duty. Then they will go to anotherassignment. We gain them and lose them.

The planning committee for our annual Women's Conference meetsWahiawa just before our afternoon service there. Zola and Iattend. The-conference will be held March 21, 22 at the centerwhere Zola cooks. I,am the treasurer.^ The theme wvll b^Seed Sower". Phrases from the hymn,- "Bringing in^the Sheaveswill provide the topics for the workshops. J'U be doi^ one on"Sowing Seeds of Kindness in the Lives of Unsaved Husbands . Mymother was an excellent example.

My core of faithful supporters have provided my income foryears. I'm so grateful. However, I need to ^replacing my 1983 Mazda station wagon. It runs beautifully, but Ihad to replace the alternator, the distributor (expensive), and atire recently. Every door had/has problems: opens from onlyside - in or out, stuck in a locked position, window crank doesnot work. I dread the thought of shopping for another car, butit may be necessary. If you would like to contribute to a carfund" please so mark your Hawaii Calls Mission check. Ifund is started now, maybe it will be enough to buy another whenthis car quits.

Ruby Siders has stored and mailed my mission display materialsfor years. She has done so with enthusiasm and care. Herhusband passed away this year, she will be moving "frequently - and needs someone to take her place. If yoyou might be interested, please wr;te for details.

Yours to sow gospel seeds.

Dear Family in the Lord;

Greetings from Hawaii! What blessings we enjoy as a part of God'sfamily! May we all seek to bring others into that relationship.

Two new families have begun to attend our services at Waialua. Onehas just had their first baby. The other is expecting their secondchild. The wife went with her mother to Jehovah Witness meetingsuntil she left home. She has attended Christian Churches since hermarriage. She said that she really wants to know what the Biblemeans. Her husband is a Catholic. Please pray that we may leadthem to really know the Lord.

Also please pray for the family of our preacher at Wahiawa—DennisDotson. He has been holding services in a hotel on the NorthShore, as well as at Wahiawa on Sunday afternoons. There is nocongregation at either place. As far as I know, they are receivingno salary. His wife has been working on the mainland, but is backnow for at least a few weeks. Dennis has been caring for their 2children—one in school, but the other at home. They need payingjobs or support if they are to remain here.

Our Bible Club continues to have six to twelve children each week, but many different ones - there are 30 on our roll. We will behaving Vacation Bible School in June, so we hope some of theseinfrequent attenders will come for VBS.

About 60 ladies from our island churches attended our Women'sConference in March. Our Waialua ladies did an outstanding jobwith their hospitality tasks. They provided the holders for nametags, planned a mixer, and made favors for each attender. Thetheme was "Be A Seed Sower", so they used small, clay flower potsto hold a sunflower and a packet of sunflower seeds on a stick. The ladies loved them. A couple of newer ladies in ourcongregation attended and were enthusiastic about the experience. On May 4 an evaluation meeting was held and reviewed theenthusiastic comments from the ladies. Plans were set in motionfor the '98 conference.

Well, the inevitable happened. My little Mazda had beenoverheating some for several weeks. Just adding water took care ofit. Then as Amy and I were returning from a Writer's Luncheon, itdied on a freeway off-ramp. When it cooled, Amy got it started andwe were able to get home. Our mechanic said it would cost $600 to

Page 4: Luttrell Henrietta 1997 Hawaii

repair the blown headgasket. Since there were so many other thingswrong with it, I didn't want to invest that much in it.

Months ago I learned that a faithful supporter for years had passedaway. Her lawyer wrote that I would be sharing a portion of herestate with some other missionaries. I had no idea how much thatwould be, but decided that when it came I would put it in the "carfund". The check arrived a few weeks before my car died. Myson-in-law and I shopped the used car market and finally decidedupon a '94 Hyundai Elantra with 46,000+ miles on it. We werelooking for a car that fit me —where I could reach the pedals andsee over the steering wheel. This one does. It is so much easier todrive with power steering and brakes, and so comfortable with airconditioning. The estate check plus $1500+ from the general fundallowed me to pay cash for it. PTL! A few people have sent giftsfor the car fund. This will allow me to replace part of that usedfrom the general fund, but more is needed. There is not muchleft. Income seldom meets outgo until after income taxes arepaid.

As you anticipate the summer months with its change of pace, mayyou seek the Lord's direction and be used in His service. I wish I

:closer and able to attend the NACC and/or the MissionaryConvention. Perhaps you will.

Yours to serve Him effectively,

P.S. I do not have a volunteer to mail out my display materials,SO I will be contacting some individuals. You can still volunteer.

Greetings from Hawaii. We've been having hot, humid weather, but finally it is beginning to cool atnight. I've been having my evening prayer time on myfront porch, watching a full moon moving in its orbit. What an inspiration! They are predicting the first highwinter surf on the north shore tomorrow.

A few ofour Bible Club children have been

attending classes and Children's Church on Sundaymorning. We were discouraged that after VBS no newchildren came. In fact, for several Sundays there were nochildren's classes. Shorthly after VBS, my one faithfulstudent had serious surgery on her leg at Shriner'sHospital. She had been in an auto accidentyears beforeand one leg was shorter than the other. She will be in thehospital for about two months. Neither she nor herbrothers have been in our Sunday services since VBS,but for the past two weeks her mother and a fiiend havebeen. We continueto pray for this Nakahara family.

The two mothers with their tiny babies continue tocome, but their husbands often work on Sundays. Theyliveclose to the church buildingand about one blockapart, so they have common interests and are developinga relationship. Both of them came to our after-churchpicnic Sunday. It was a baby shower for a third lady. Ihad forgotten what a pile of things one has to pack upand carry in order to care for infants at such an event.

Dennis Dotson was called to a ministry in Californiaand is now living in San Pedro. Leo Douglas, along-timefriend and co-worker, has agreed to preach forus at Wahiawa, so we are continuing the Sundayafternoon service there.

One of the young men who attends themorning Ilokano service asked us ifwe diddoor-to-door visitation. I made 50 flyersinviting folks to come to either the morning orafternoon services. John, Zola, and Idistributed about 35 of them. John lives in the

apartment at the church. He agreed to giveout the rest, and wants more. I will make them

A fnend has responded to my appeal forsomeone to care for and mail my missiondisplay materials. As soon as she has thethings ready, I will give her name and address. Then you can contact her to make a tabledisplay for your mission lesson on Hawaii.

My "new" car continues to run well. I didhave to have the front end aligned, and gettwo new tires. The $1,5001 used from thegeneral fiind for the car purchase has not beenreplaced, and my income has just beenkeeping up with expenses. Your concern andhelp is appreciated. May the Lord bless allyour efforts in His service.

AdELE KAE1KJA4AKA, and HAUOLIhdAKAHIKJHOUto you! This oft-repeatedgreeting is no less sincere because ofrepetition. I pray that this season will renew yourfaith in the Lord's provision and challenge you to use every opportunity to serve Him.Four orfive ofthe Bible Club children have been attending on Sunday morning, too. They are rascals and disruptive sometimes, but they are learning to behave. They live justacross the street from the church. We pray that we may sow seeds that will grow intomature plants.

On November 15 over 100 ladies from our sister churches attended a seminar givenby Joani Tabor. She challenged us to show by our lives that we are "Fully Alive in theSpirit" Nowwe are planning for our spring women's conference. Zola and I will beattending a planning session on Sundayat lunchtime between services at Wialua andWahiawa. Last Sunday the preacher who speaks at the afternoon English service atWahiawa, attended themorning service there. One of the older ladies, whom we hadvisited, came for the first time. We hope she comes again, ofcourse, and that we willreach others.

Again, Lord willing, 1will be in California over Christmas. I'm leaving early ~Thursday, Dec. 11 and returning December 30. Along with many people - especiallychildren - this is my favorite time ofyear. Anticipation comes, not fi-om what I will get(I'm trying to get rid of things I have), but what I can give.

At Waialua Church we are collecting items for our Christmas baskets. Many ofthefolks in our congregation work at low-paying jobs orare on welfare, but they havehearts oflove, and share what they have. Last year we gave 7baskets. I will behere forthe decorating party, but miss the annual carolling. LORA will be doing the sound for atheater production of"Fiddler on the Roof," and 1want to see it. Last year I arrived justone day after her play closed.

I have always taken those holiday trips alone, but this year I am taking one of mygranddaughterswith me. LETA'S girls will enjoy company about their ages. I love thisseason, too, because I hear from many friends only now —about their new familymembers, etc. 1 want to share my family news, too. Of course, most of life consists ofdoing routine things, so there are not a lot of changes. LORA continues to work for asoftware company. Now she is doing more training than support work for which she ishappy. LETA continues to teach and administrate the kindergarten in a Christian school. Her husband, DAVID, has been promoted to plant engineer at Applied Materials. Theirdaughters, MEGHAN and ANYA, keep busy with school and church. MARKcontinues as an electronic engineer at Lockheed-Martin in Sunnyvale. Last Novembertheir son ALEC was bom, Mark's wife, NIKKI, no longer works for Lockheed butstays home to care for ALEC and NATALIE.

I'll spend time with all these folks, but will miss seeing PHILIP, JONNA, anddaughter BETH who live in Frankfort, IN. Philip continues to work at Frito-Lay andtries to tell his co-workers about Jesus' love for them. Here in Hawaii AMY continues tohome-school her children and make business contacts. She helps husband DAVIDprepare bids for his constmction work. LEILANI and CYNTHIA helped their churchco-ed Softball team win their league championship. BETTINA, ANITA, KAWIKA,MAILE, ROBBIE, and MOANI are growing and learning. After school on Mondaysthe King children and I often go to a park, library, or beach, and I fix dinner for them.We have fun!

You may now request mission display materials from my friend Mrs. Ron Simpson,323 E. Main Street, Greentown, In 46936-1219. TheLord continues tomeet myphysical needsthrough Hispeople. Butse\-eral ofmyregular supporters have retired and areno longer able to support thework. Somemonths incomedoes not equal outgo. Please pray and help ifyou can.
