Aloha, in the Hawaiian language, means"love." Love, a big word in any language,holds many connotations, and yet is auniversal bridge capable of uniting the lostof many nations with Christ. For over half acentury missionaries from the ChristianChurch/Church of Christ have been bearingall things, believing and enduring: rejoicingin the truth that love never fails as souls havebeen won to the Lord in Hawaii.

Donnie and Charlotte Mings went toHawaii in January 1976 with their twochildren, Sherl (now married and living inTyler, Texas with her husband and son) andJeffrey (now a third year student atKapiolani Community College, majoring incomputers and electrical engineering). TheMings had previously served as missionariesin Osaka, Japan, working with Osaka Mission and Osaka Bible Seminary.

They have been working with the HauuiaChurch of Christ on the windward, or northern side of the island, about one hour's drivefrom Honolulu. Donnie has been serving asthe minister of the church for about tenyears. Charlotte serves as Sunday schoolteacher and song leader.

The Mings are on partial missionarysupport from mainland churches and individuals, supplementing their support withsome local work, such as Japanese weddings. Charlotte regularly sings for theweddings in Honolulu three days a week.Donnie performs the Japanese languageceremonies when needed. (This work is incooperation with Wes Walker, another missionary.

The Hauuia Church of Christ was begunby the Owen Still family back in November of1946 and recently celebrated its fortiethanniversary. It is a multi-racial congregationin a multi-racial town that includes quite afew Orientals as well as Polynesians such asSamoans. The town is said to be at least fiftypercent Mormon. It is situated on thenorthern coast of Oahu, only about a milefrom the big Laie Mormon complex, whichincludes the Mormon Temple, BringhamYoung University Hawaii Campus, and themain tourist attraction, the Mormon ownedand operated Polynesian Cultural Center.

The church at Hauuia is fortunate to havetwo faithful school teachers helping out,serving the church in many ways over theyears. These are Eleanor Otake and JudlePeterson of the Sunset Beach ChristianSchool. These two ladles deserve much ofthe credit for the survival of the church overthe years since it was founded.

HISTORY:

Hawaii Calls Mission was formed byCharles and Henrietta Luttrell in 1962 toanswer the call of the Owen Stills for helpwith the ministry at the Palolo Valley andKalihi Churches of Christ in Honolulu.

Charles served in both congregations forseveral months until Owen's healthpermitted him to return to Kalihi. TheLuttrells' goal was to help the Palolo Valleycongregation to become self-supporting.Since it was made up almost entirely ofchildren and young people, it seemed thequickest way was to begin a day-care center for pre-school children. This necessitated buying a larger piece of property.

In 1971 the congregation moved to alarger site in an ideal location, but the buildings were old and run down. Later that year,Jullen Storms, Henrietta's brother, came tohelD with the rebuilding and maintenanceand Deborah Blazer came to serve as Christian Education Director.

During this time the young people served,studied, and matured. Some of them arenow leaders in the congregation. After yearsof hard work in rebuilding and remodeling,the pre-school was able to get a state licenseand opened in 1974 under the direction ofFaye Tanigawa, a member of the congregation who had a degree from the University ofHawaii. Henrietta and Deborah were theteachers.

In the summer of 1974 Faye and Deborahboth married and moved to the mainland.

Faye has now returned to the islands withher preacher husband and they serve in theSunset Beach Church of Christ. Otherteachers taught in the pre-school for periods of time, but Henrietta taught until thecongregation was able to hire teachers.

With the tuition from the pre-school andmission support, the monthly mortgagepayments were met until 1982, when a houseon a small corner of the property was soldand the proceeds paid off the debt.

While the Luttrells were on furlough in1962, Robert Plank of Eugene, Oregon, ministered to the congregation. He was thencalled to serve as the first paid minister of thecongregation in July 1983.

When their services were no longerneeded at Palolo Valley, the Luttrells beganto help the Waipahu Church of Christ.Charles preached for the entire congregation until they were able to call an llocano-speaking preacher, Felipe Bayani, who hadbeen educated and served in the PhilippineIslands for about twenty-five years. ThenCharles and Henrietta continued to teachthe children and young people who were educated in Hawaii and are not able to read orwrite their parents' language.

In the spring of 1985 the Luttrells moved tothe Waianae coast where they could buycheaper housing and be a little nearerWaipahu. Their home is located less thantwo miles from the Maili Church of Christ

where they placed their fellowship andattended night services. Henrietta began anafter school class for elementary age children which has had a good attendance andseveral of them now attend Sunday servicesalso.

Living in this drier area helped Charles'breathing. He had had asthma for years and

becoming increasingly short of breath, hewas able to preach and teach, but by thespring of 1986 was unable to do muchphysical labor. On June 11,1986 he passedfrom this life due to cardiac arrest.

FUTURE PLANS:Henrietta was on furlough from June

through October 1986 but has now returnedto Waianae to resume teaching with theWaipahu and Maili congregations.

The congregation at Waipahu has severalyoung people in it who speak English without much accent and who regularly attend.It is hoped that they can be trained throughteam-teaching to take over the youth classesso that Henrietta can be relieved to do moreat the smaller Maili congregations.

HISTORY:"There's a school that we'll always remem

ber . . . Oh, the Sunset Beach ChristianSchool..."

Mrs. Owen Still wrote these words for the

"school song" as she and Mr. Still traveledthe long way from Honolulu to Sunset Beachon the North Shore (Oahu). Now 130 children sing it with a deep love for the littleschool that teaches them to know Jesus

Christ and also how to read!

The first year, 1953, when the school wasstarted by the Sunset Beach Church, lessthan twenty brown, barefoot, bashful keikis(children) came to school. Here they mettheir three haole (mainland) teachers ofgrades kindergarten through eighth:Charles Moore, Wava Poll and JessicaFloyd. The kitchen became a classroom forthe seven children in grades one throughthree. Children walked to school or weretaken home by teachers. They came fromhomes where parents did not know Christ orattend church. Students began to bringparents to church and soon there werebaptisms In the largest baptistry in theworld—The Pacific Ocean.

PRESENT ENDEAVORS:In the 3314 years of the school, there have

been 29 teachers, 1108 students, 194graduates, over 300 students and parentswho have accepted Christ as their Savior.Today there are 130 students of all races,beautiful mixture, children of the sun, stilllearning of Jesus every day as the Bible istaught as a regular subject. Today, children ^ 'ride to school on the bus from as far away as 5

Hauula and Waialua, many are brought innice cars, talk is about television, computersand sports events.

Some of our students have gone to Biblecollege on the mainland and have becomeworkers there and in Hawaii. Now, many ofour students come from solid Christian

homes with strong believing parents.

FUTURE PLANS:

It is our plan to continue to teach Christdaily, to encourage students to followChrist, to raise up Christian workers, to helpthem use their talents for the Lord. We have

no plan to expand by adding a high school.It is often requested by parents, but with ourfacilities, we prefer to concentrate on theelementary level.

WORKERS:God is the Headmaster of the school. He

has been with us from the humble

beginning, providing for our needs in manyways.

HISTORY:

The Sunset Beach Church of Christopened its doors on the north shore of Oahu,beginning services in the home of Owen andShirley Still and their daughter, EleanorSprankies, in 1948-49. Property was purchased about a year later and an oldbarracks building was remodeled to becomethe church house.

Glen and Ruth Still Powell came to

minister in 1951 and have remained. In 1953the church was instrumental in opening theChristian School as a means of reaching thecommunity for Christ. The church andschool have served together faithfully andwell.

PRESENT ENDEAVORS:

In 1960 a lovely new sanctuary waserected and it is used almost daily in specialprograms, chapel, practices, and regularservices. Glen, who now works at a secularjob as well, continues to minister to this con

gregation, as do others who also work withthe school. Assisting in the ministry are Donand Jo Roth from Eustis, Florida.

FUTURE PLANS:

Sunset Beach is looking ahead toward being able to bring in a full-time minister. Godhas blessed this ministry and has used it toHis glory in these Islands of the Pacific.

THE WORK:

The Waialua Christian Church was started

in 1965 with the financial help of manyindividuals, two mainland churches (Cope-land, Kansas and Redwood City, California)and the Kaimuki Christian Church and

Sunset Beach Christian Church. It is lo

cated on the outskirts of the sugar mill townof Waialua.

Steven Sturm is the present minister. Heand his family arrived in January 1976.Steven was graduated from Qzark BibleCollege in 1971. Blossom, from Hawaii, alsoattended OBC.

The church has one Timothy, CarlThorstad, a senior at San Jose BibleCollege. 10% of the church income is setaside for missions, Ninos de Mexico beingtheir main effort.

In September 1986 a house was donated tothe church by the Humane Society. It wasmoved to an empty lot in front of the churchand remodeled into a parsonage.

Music is a part of the worship of thechurch.

Over 60 children attended the 1986 VBS,with 17 teachers and helpers and an offeringof over $120 for Ninos de Mexico.

Greetings in the name of the Babe of Bethlehem at this very specialtime of year. May the celebration of His birth bring back memoriesof former years that brought you peace and joy. May this help tomake 1988 a banner year for you and yours.

1987 was a different year for me and one that brought many things forwhich to be grateful - some in unexpected ways.

FAMILY! The Lord has blessed me with children who love Him and carefor my needs. I have been living in the Maili church parsonage with myoldest daughter, AMY, and her family. Her husband, David, is stillworking on my house but not so feverishly now since it has passed allinspections, and now the paper work is being done to finish my loanapproval. There are still some things that need to be done before Ican occupy the house but must be postponed until I have more money,so David is looking for employment. Amy is expecting a baby in early1988, so they will be here until spring, at least. David and Amy leadthe Sunday evening worship time with their guitars, Amy plays the pianoon Sunday mornings, David has done maintenance work at the church-plumbing, electrical, roofing, carpentry, etc. I keep busy with helpingwith the four girls, cooking, cleaning, etc. in addition to the teaching,mission book work, calling, etc.

LETA and her family are living with her in-laws in San Jose, CA. Shehas recovered from her back surgery and can do all that she could dobefore it except for heavy lifting. She is home schooling her girlsand is active in her church programs. MARK is still with Lockheed asan electronic engineer. PHILIP and his wife live in Frankfort, IN.They have been unsuccessful in finding a child to adopt, so they areseeking a license to be foster parents. His wife has resigned herteaching position to be a full-time housewife and to be able to carefor children in the home. LORA is working five days a week and helpingin the church here as time permits. Right now she is planning theDeeper Life Christmas Camp for Jr. and Sr. High School Christians. Sheis recruiting teachers who will use the book of Philippians for theirlessons. Her publicity headlines "You can be a star" from Phil. 211^1-,

FRIENDS: Many people from many places pray, send support, write lettersand encourage me. I am grateful for each one. While I cannot mentioneach one, I am very dependent on one of them especially.

JOHN PAGE has faithfully had this newsletter printed./aadressed, sorted,bundled, and mailed them for 25 years. This takes a lot of time andeffort which has relieved me of this responsibility. It also providesyou with more up-to-date information. If third class mail was sentfrom here it might take ^ to 6 weeks for you to get it. His futureplans are indefinite, and he would like to be relieved of this task.I am considering other ways to have this mailing done, possibly through

Mission Services. This will entail about $75 for getting the mailinglist on the computer and then a little more cost for each mailing.

FINANCIAL PROBLEMS: When times are good and we have no problems, itseems to be human nature to rely on self and our friends. But whenproblems arise that we cannot handle, then we turn to the Lord. Foryears we have had enough support to live comfortably and do the missionwork in a modest way. But for the past few months, my support has notbeen coming in as it has in the past. In October I did not have enoughincome to take $350 of my $^00 housing allowance. Some of my bills werepaid late. Then I began to realize that I must depend more on the HolySpirit to move His people to do His will. It is through the Lord Iserve here. I must trust Him and rely on Him rather than on men. Ihope that I remember this lesson, am constantly aware of and gratefulfor his care, and continually ask the Lord for my daily bread, I knowHe can supply my needs according to His riches in glory through thethe generosity of His people. As you seek to put the Babe of Bethlehemon your Christmas list, will you consider the need for the children ofWaipahu and Maili to hear of His love through me?
