Lupiani Ledger LAST ISSUE FOR THE 2015-2016 CLASS

Thanks, Mom! In 1914, they prevailed. President Woodrow Wilson made the official announcement proclaiming Mother’s Day as a national holiday, to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May.

It’s been a long time since our kindergarten days, when we invited our mothers to school for Mother’s Day Tea. But we still count on them every day—and we’ll continue to in middle school! So…thanks Mom! Jalen Furgeson

As we prepare to move on from Tritt, we fifth graders have a lot of people to thank. Teachers, coaches, and friends have all helped us along the way. But we want to give a special shout-out to our moms. Have you ever wondered how Mother’s Day got started in the United States? We did. Here’s what we found out.

The woman who came up with it was Anna Jarvis. In 1908, three years after her mother’s death, she decided she wanted to establish one day a year to honor her mother and ALL mothers. She gave speeches, promoting the cause, and she and her followers wrote hundreds of letters to those holding positions of power in the government.

Sports

Everyone loves the Olympics, and the next summer games are being held this year! The 2016 Olympic Games will be held August 5 – 21st in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, a.k.a. the fastest man alive, has already won the world record for the fastest 100 and 200-meter races. He’s vowed to outdo himself in the next Olympics. Another athlete to watch is China’s Wu Minxia, one of the most successful female divers ever. Leading up to the games, the Olympic torch will be carried on a 95 day tour of Brazil. As you can see, the 2016 Olympics are going to be a blast!

Tree Top Quest: Target’s Last Hurrah

Isabel’s take… Have you ever wanted to climb through the trees? Or fly down a zip line on an amazing obstacle course? Well on a recent Wednesday, the 5th grade Target classes did just that. When the kids arrived at Treetop Quest, Ms. Neal’s class went on an amazing hike to learn about classification, while Ms. Wilson’s headed for the trees for zip-line training. Eventually both classes got to choose from five numbered obstacle courses. There were zip lines, bridges, ropes, and more!

Edward’s take…

Tree Top Quest was an amazing experience! I got to walk on tight ropes and zip-line. The day began with some Tree Top Quest employees teaching me how to use the harness, and I had to go through the training course. Then I went on to complete the Level Two course. After lunch, we paired up to identify one organism from nine different species. Next, I got in a group of three, and we opened up wood (from logs and branches) to search for bugs!

Ryan’s take… This outdoor experience was one of the best field trips. Whether we were zooming up in the trees or looking through microscopes at the GA Heritage Center, we were having the time of our lives.

We asked three 5th graders: What was your favorite thing about this year at Tritt?

Carly King, Ms. Pizzuto: “I liked Immigration Day, because I got to experience what it was like for immigrants, and I got to experience being deported.”

Lucia Baumgartner, Ms. Smith: “Driftwood was my favorite memory, because we got to do so many cool things!”

Finn Rasmussen, Ms. Pizzuto: “I liked Immigration Day, because I got to use currency from other countries.”

Have you ever spotted Tritt

students wearing something…odd? Pajamas, maybe? Or a funny hat? Often they’re dressed that way for a good reason: They’re generating funds for “Relay for Life.” That’s an organization that helps people with cancer. “Our school does Hat Day,

PJ Day, doughnut sales, and Chick-fil-A Day, all to raise money for Relay for

Life,” Mrs. Edwards says. “We’ve raised thousands of dollars.’’

Cobb County participates in these

activities every May, and the money raised goes to the American Cancer Society. Sadly, the

need for a cure persists. ‘’Cancer has impacted many people, including my own mother,’’ says Mrs. Lupiani.

Relay for Life also brings awareness about the disease. Not smoking and cutting back on junk food are two well-known ways to lower your risk. And you can always help raise money in a goofy hat!

Meet Ms. Teuchert…

You are my hero, Ms. Teuchert!

If you see her at the movie theater, she’s probably there for a sci-fi or superhero flick. (She loves Batman!) And there’s a big place in her heart for Star Wars.

Second Grade Teacher, First-Rate Year! Tritt’s newest second grade teacher isn’t so new anymore. On May 25th, Ms. Teuchert will finish her first year. Looking back, she says she always knew it would be an amazing year, and she was right. She loved it so much that she’s not ready to leave her class! Here are some “new teacher” facts about her—quick, before school ends for summer!

The food she loves best? Pizza. Who doesn’t?

Her dog Kingsley

In her free time, she likes to swim and watch baseball. Of course, she has a favorite college football team, which is…take a guess:

Her favorite drink is half and half tea.

Moving on to…

Have you ever wondered what it is like in middle school? We asked Emme Black, a 7th grader at Hightower Trail Middle School, a few questions about it. Q- How did you feel on the first day of school? A- I was a little nervous at first, but it turned out fine at the end of the day. Q- Was it hard finding your classroom? A- Not really, because there are teachers in the hallway to help you. Q- Did you ever get lost at school? A- Once or twice trying to find my locker! Q- How different is HTMS from Tritt? A- Well, it is still school. But there are lockers, and you have to get used to switching classes. Q- Is the food any better? A- A little bit, but not by much.

The Jungle Book movie was released on April 15 in the U.S. This movie got great reviews. The movie was about a kid named Mowgli (Neel Sethi) who was fleeing from a threat who happened to be a tiger named Shere Khan. Mowgli goes on an adventure through the jungle and meets new friends along the way. I hope you check out this new and spectacular movie. You will be on the edge of your seat! Go watch The Jungle Book at your local theater!

Have you ever read Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell? Well the book that comes after it is The Enchantress Returns, and it’s just as good! Alex and Conner, the main characters, are sprung into an adventure in the fairytale world. But how did they get there? And what is the new adventure? Well those questions will be answered in the story, The Enchantress Returns.

Hey, school’s almost out!

SUMMER 2016

Through all my time at Tritt, I have been fortunate to have Mrs. Lupiani as my teacher for not one but THREE years. I have loved her from the very first day I met her. And I’m not the only one. As we prepare to leave Tritt and move on to middle school, lots of other triple-timers feel the same way. “She’s the best teacher I’ve ever known,” says Ryan Driemeyer. “I love Mrs. Lupiani.” What is it we love about her?

“She is funny, kind, and crazy, says Hannah Egan. “She has pushed me to be who I am and what I can do. And she will make you smile!”

Jack Davis, who’s been in her class twice, agrees. “Mrs. Lupiani knows how to cheer anyone up if they are down in the

dumps,” he says. “From my heart to yours, you’re truly awesome!” Needless to say, those of us who love Mrs. Lupiani will miss her very

much. She is not just an amazing teacher. She’s the best, in my opinion. Goodbye, Mrs. Lupiani—with lots of love!
