• Thousands of years ago, thatwas ravaged by an evil monster one winter's eve. The followingyear the monster returned andagain ravaged the village. Before
it could happen a third time, thevillagers devised a plan to scarethe monster away. Red bannerswere hung everywhere; the color red has long been believed toprotect against evil. Firecrackers, drums and gongs were used tocreate loud noises to scare the
beast away. The plan worked andthe celebration lasted severaldays during which people visitedwith each other, exchanged gifts, danced and ate tasty food.

Chinese ZodiacChinese Zodiac • According to Chinese legend, the twelve animals quarreled
one day as to who was to head the cycle of years. The godswere asked to decide and they held a contest: whoever wasto reach the opposite bank of the river would be first, andthe rest of the animals would receive their years accordingto their finish.
• All the twelve animals gathered at the river bank and jumped in. Unknown to the ox, the rat had jumped uponhis back. As the ox was about to jump ashore, the rat jumped off the ox's back, and won the race. The pig, who
was very lazy, ended up last. That is why the rat is the firstyear of the animal cycle, the ox second, and the pig last.
• 2010 will be the year of the Metal Tiger. Since ‘Metal’ isconsidered as white colour,
2010 is also known as the year of the White Tiger
