Let’s make the Dentist Better

DENTAL SCALER

Page 4: LUKE HYDRICK Industrial Design

To design a Dental Scaler that allows dentists to work more comfortably and efficiently while eliminating causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE

Lesson Learned

Focus on the cylindrical width, materials, and shape of

grip to address squeeze force, slipping, and sterilization.

TASK ANALYSISDental Hygienist use their scaler about half

of the time. That is four hours a day.

DESIGN CAN HELP PEOPLE.

Time for your check up. Research trip to the Dr. Applegate dentistry.

For most of us the mere thought of going to the

dentist hurts. But it can be painful for them too. We

tested prototypes to get real dentists’ opinions on

how to fix the problem.

soft horizontal ribs spread out the pressure points

taper on grip to reduce slipping

inspired by the use of tapered mechanical pencil grips

removable colored grip

COLORDifferent colored grips serve as tool identifiers.

Page 8: LUKE HYDRICK Industrial Design

SOLUTIONS

Anti Slip taper reduces slipping.

1

Connection and function:Different colored detachable grips help dentists identify their tools from others.

2

11mm thick handle is easier to grasp, reducingpinch force.

3

Sterilizable metal and autoclave safe silicone.

4

Ergonomic rubber grip reduces pinch force throughsoft rubber and ribbing.

Final Model: Dentists connect emotionally

with their dental scalers.

This product’s new design

reinforces this bond and

decreases their risk of CTS.

This is achieved through:

TIMBERLAND ABINGTON

Page 11: LUKE HYDRICK Industrial Design

Made for the fashionable modern man and

inspired by a time when the West was still wild and the

cowboys who conquered it were revered as the most

respectable men of all. This product is inspired by the

silhouettes, styles, and materials that those men wore

to pioneer this land. When you don’t dress like everyone

else, you don’t have to think like everyone else.

WHAT DOES HE NEED?

Let’s go skate! You have to go skate to really know what this shoe needs to

do. But beyond that skateboarding is as much about culture

as it is about actually skating. Not only does this shoe have to

perform well, it has to look good doing it.
