Luke 1:26-38 (New Living Translation)

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a village in Galilee, 27 to a virgin named Mary. She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. 28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!” 29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. 30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God! 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.

32 He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 And he will reign over Israel forever; his Kingdom will never end!” 34 Mary asked the angel, “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.” 35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God.

36 What’s more, your relative Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age! People used to say she was barren, but she’s now in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God.” 38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” And then the angel left her.

Mary was a regular person. Just like you and I.

God had impossible plans for her. Just like God has for you.

The deal! “But how can this happen?”

(The HOW is God’s part). “I am the Lord’s servant”

(The SERVANT part is yours).

YOU + GOD = ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!

Luke 1:28 Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you!”

God is always with us. (Immanuel = God with us)

This realization is a must. It was Mary’s starting point . It must be yours.

Have you made this an absolute acknowledgement in your life?

Page 10: Luk1 26 38-marys-story

Luke 1:29 Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.

It can be difficult to fully realize God’s favor toward us

Confusion even doubt are part of honest faith. It’s normal and Mary is an example

Asking God the tough questions is part of faith

Luke 1:30 “Don’t be afraid, Mary,” the angel told her, “for you have found favor with God!

Fear can be calmed by the awareness of God’s favor.

God’s Grace (favor) is more than any fear or doubt. God is more.

“By grace are we saved.” Doubt, questions and confusion do not cancel God’s favor toward us!

Luke 1:31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus.

God has big plans. He always works them through his servants

Notice: The miracle in Mary’s life was to benefit others. So are God’s main plans for you

No self serving miracle here. God + You = Others blessed.

Luke 1:35 The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will

overshadow you.

We must remember – It is God not just you! You + God = Great things

'Not by (your) might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty. -- Zechariah 4:6

Baptism promise: “Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. --Acts 2:38

Luke 1:37 “For nothing is impossible with God.”

Context: Elizabeth has become pregnant in her old age!

Context: “But how can this happen? I am a virgin.”

Meaning: Nothing in your life is impossible with God.

Page 15: Luk1 26 38-marys-story

Luke 1:38 Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true.”

There is the key: Trust!

Application: Can you say “Yes” to God? Can you submit to God as Mary did?

Result: Trust and Submission releases the power of God in your life. Nothing in your will be the same again.
