“When I was four my parents took me to Dr. Budge McKey, as I was sick, wheezing, and coughing all the time. I was a happy kid, but I did not un-derstand why I couldn’t breathe. Dr. McKey was the best, and over thenext several years, I was a frequent visitor to his office, even on Sundays. He tried everything, and sometimes he even sent me to other PediatricSpecialists at the Department of Pediatrics to make sure that I wouldn’tbe allergic to the medicines he wanted me to try.

At that time, the Department of Pediatrics was much smaller than itis today. Dr. McKey told my brother and me that we had to help himraise money so that there could be a wonderful building to take care ofall the sick kids. We actually raised money with our middle school bypromoting a runathon.

I am no longer sick, and I have outgrown my asthma.I know that without these doctors and their devotionto kids like me, my life would not be the same. Now,I am a 3rd year student at Boston University and Iam on the Varsity Tennis Team. I never dreamt thatI would feel so good, let alone become a collegeathlete. I will always be committed to the Universityof Miami Department of Pediatrics.

Lucky me to have had such awesome care.”

Miami Lucky Brand Event 2007:In 2007, the Lucky Brand Foundation sponsored the2nd Miami Black Tie & Blue Jean Gala to support theChildren’s Heart Center (CHC) at the University of

Miami, Miller School of Medicine. The event was success-ful in raising over $700,000 for the CHC. The CHC hasbeen a leader in the specialty of caring for children withheart disease for over forty years. It has been a pioneer

in the field of arrhythmia management (i.e., abnormalheart rhythm) in children; possesses one of the few andfinest children heart and heart/lung transplant programs

in the world; and currently has one of the largest car-diomyopathy programs in the country. The CHC is alsoone of the leading centers for children’s heart surgery

and has outcomes that exceed those reported nationally. The program has built an international reputation regard-ing preventive cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation programs, electrophysiology, fetal cardiology, heart failure/transplant,

and basic and clinical research programs.

Miami Lucky Brand Event 2005:In 2005,The Lucky Brand Foundation hosted the 1st

Black Tie and Blue Jean Gala in Miami. The event raisedover $500,000 for the University of Miami Miller School

of Medicine’s Pediatric Mobile Clinic. The Pediatric MobileClinic provides comprehensive primary health care serv-ices to children most in need, specifically those with lim-ited or no access to health care in Miami Dade County.Over the last 16 years, the Mobile Clinic has had more

than 60,000 patient encounters, making a positive impacton the quality of life of these children and their families. The rolling clinic, which began in 1992 after Hurricane

Andrew, offers everything from physical exams and vacci-nations to lab testing, prescriptions, and hearing and visionscreenings. It travels to about 12 different sites in Miami-Dade County. Almost 70% of the kids who visit the clinichave been living in the United States for less than 5 years

and don’t qualify for Medicaid, KidCare, or any otherform of government insurance.

Gene and Barry Founded in 1952, the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Miami MillerSchool of Medicine is the largest research and treatment institute for children in the

southeastern United States. With 22 clinical divisions and centers, we provide acomprehensive approach to health care for the benefit of tens of thousands of

infants, children and adolescents annually. Young patients come to us from allover the world to receive quality care delivered with compassion by

outstanding pediatric specialists and other skilled medical professionals. As part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine,

the Department of Pediatrics is integrated into a dynamicresearch environment where innovative and effective

treatments and cures are under development.

We have a proven track record of excellence and arebuilding new programs such as a new early-phase clinical

trials program in pediatric oncology so that we continue to beat the forefront of child health care. This program will enable us to

treat children whose cancer is resistant to traditional therapies sothat they do not have to travel far to receive experimental treatments. At the same time, we are strengthening existing programs such as our

Children’s Heart Center (CHC). Recently doctors at the CHC kept a fourteen yearold girl alive for 118 days on a specialized artificial heart while she awaited her

second heart transplant. She is thought to be the first pediatric patient tosurvive without a heart — with her blood being circulated artificially.

From pediatric cancer to cardiology, prematurity and pulmonology, diabetes to develop-mental disabilities our physician scientists have discovered ways to treat and prevent a

range of pediatric health challenges. We are a destination of hope for families.
